Carbonaceous soot particles are formed during incomplete combustion of fossil fuels, biofuels or biomass and are considered to be a significant proportion of aerosol emission, especially in polluted areas, and to contain light-absorbing carbon fractions. The light-absorbing carbon components make these particles exhibit positive radiative forcing and thus they contribute to atmospheric warming processes. The exact contribution to this process however still has significant uncertainties. One of the sources of uncertainty is related to the capacity to accurately describe soot spectral optical properties (MAC/MSC/MEC - mass absorption/scattering/extinction cross-sections in m2g-1; CRI - complex refractive index), due to significant uncertainties for key measurements like the absorption coefficient or absorbing mass fraction. A second source is considered to be the change of the optical properties with the variable physico-chemical state of soot (e.g. chemical composition, morphology, primary particle size, aggregate size distribution, coating and mixing state) which depends on (i) the combustion conditions/sources and is (ii) known to change during atmospheric lifetime due to ageing and mixing processes.The present work aims at providing new measurements of soot spectral optical properties and investigating their dependence on particles’ physico-chemical state and the role of measurement uncertainties. For this, a set of original experiments was performed in the 4.3m3 CESAM atmospheric simulation chamber (https://cesam.cnrs.fr/) on soot aerosols generated by a commercial propane diffusion flame soot generator (miniCAST model 6204 TYPE C, JING). In these experiments, the variability of soot properties due to (i) generation and (ii) atmospheric ageing was explored. Different combustion conditions going from fuel–leaner to fuel-richer were set to produce soot aerosol with different effective densities, EC/TC-ratios ranging from 0.8 ± 0.1 to 0.0 ± 0.1 and size distributions with median diameters between 30 and 120 nm. Selected aerosols were subjected to ageing in a N2/O2 atmosphere under simulated atmospheric conditions (humid, with/without illumination, up to 26 hours lifetime). In these conditions, physical and chemical ageing, under the presence of different gaseous phases (O3, SO2) and addition of a second aerosol phase produced by photo-oxidation of SO2 or the ozonolysis of α-pinene, led to changes in the physico-chemical properties of the soot.State-of-the-art techniques were used to generate an extensive dataset of physico-chemical parameters (mass concentration, morphology, effective density, composition, size distribution) and spectral optical properties (absorption, scattering, extinction coefficients) for different soot aerosols and different ageing states of these. The absorption coefficient in particular was measured by both filter-based (AE - Aethalometer, MAAP - Multi-Angle Absorption Photometer, MWAA – Multi-Wavelength Absorbance Analyzer, PP_UniMI - Polar Photometer by University of Milano) and extinction minus scattering techniques. The MAC, MSC and MEC datasets, retrieved by combining these measurements, will be presented for the ensemble of chamber experiments and the variability of these parameters in link with variations in the particles’ physico-chemical properties will be discussed together with key relevant uncertainties.

Bio-aerosols consist of airborne particles such as pollens, fungi, bacteria, viruses and debris from biological matter, such as metabolites and toxins, that are present ubiquitously in the environment. In last decades, the interest in bioaerosols has increased rapidly to broaden the pool of knowledge on their identification, quantification, distribution, but also to understand how bioaerosols impact human health in both indoor and outdoor settings. Experiments conducted inside confined artificial environments, such as the Atmospheric Simulations Chambers (ASCs), where atmospheric conditions and composition are controlled, can provide valuable information on bio-aerosol viability, dispersion, and impact. At ChAMBRe (Chamber for Aerosol Modelling and Bio-aerosol Research), a 2.3 m3 stainless steel ASC, managed by INFN at the Physics Department of the University of Genoa, Italy, the research on bioaerosol is focused on the investigation of the airborne bacteria behavior in different atmospheric conditions (Massabò et al., AMT, 2018). Our experiments were performed with two types of bacteria, Bacillus Subtilis and Escherichia Coli evolutionarily divergent model organisms, Gram-negative and Gram-positive respectively, to compare cellular viability by varying of the atmospheric conditions in the simulation chambre. A great effort has been put in the assessment of an experimental protocol which includes bacteria cultivation, injection in the chamber of viable cells, exposure to peculiar environmental conditions and final verification of the loss/gain in viability. With first experiments, bacteria were exposed to high concentration of characterized soot particles (Black carbon ~ 600 μg m-3) and NOx exhausts, both produced by propane combustion (Vernocchi et al., 2021). The effects of NOx only were also separately investigated, in another set of experiments, in which different concentration of NOx were tested. Evidence of an impact of NOx concentration on the viability of the Gram-negative Bacillus Subtilis were observed and will be fully reported at the conference.

Atmospheric simulation chambers are often utilized to study the physical properties and chemical reactivity of particles suspended in air. In this chapter, the various approaches employed for the addition of particles to simulation chambers are described in detail. Procedures for the generation of monodispersed seed aerosols, mineral dust, soot particles and bioaerosols are all presented using illustrative examples from chamber experiments. Technical descriptions of the methods used for the addition of whole emissions (gases and particles) from real-world sources such as wood-burning stoves, automobile engines and plants are also included, along with an outline of experimental approaches for investigating the atmospheric processing of these emissions.

Periprosthetic joint infections (PJIs) represent a devastating consequence of total joint arthroplasty. The European Knee Associates (EKA), the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons (AAHKS) International Committee, and the Arthroplasty Society in Asia (ASIA) board members were interested in quantifying differences in arthroplasty surgeons’ use of various PJI prevention measures to provide clinical recommendations to reduce PJI incidence. A prospective Microsoft Forms online survey was distributed among EKA, AAHKS International Committee, and ASIA members and their affiliated arthroplasty surgeons. The survey consisted of 20 single and multiple response questions focused on PJI prevention strategies at three perioperative periods: preoperatively, intraoperatively, and postoperatively. Three hundred and ninety-four arthroplasty surgeons from 6 different continents completed the survey. The performance of a mini inverted soot generator (MISG) has been investigated at ChAMBRe (Chamber for Aerosol Modelling and Bio-aerosol Research) by studying the properties of soot particles generated by ethylene and propane combustion. This work deepens and expands the existing characterization of the MISG, which also exploits an atmospheric simulation chamber (ASC). Different from previous works, MISG performance has been also tested at different fuel flows and higher global equivalence ratios. MISG exhausts were investigated after their injection inside the atmospheric simulation chamber, which is another novelty of this work. Starting from an extensive classification of combustion conditions and resulting flame shapes, the MISG exhaust was characterized in terms of concentration of emitted particles and gases, particle size distribution, and optical properties. Soot particles were also collected on quartz fibre filters and then analysed by optical and thermal–optical techniques to measure the spectral dependence of the absorption coefficient babs​​​​​​​ and their composition in terms of elemental carbon and organic carbon (EC and OC). Significant differences could be observed when the MISG was fuelled with ethylene and propane in terms of particle size. In particular, the production of super-micrometric aggregates was observed for ethylene combustion. With equal combustion conditions, ethylene produced a higher number concentration of particles and smaller mode diameters. Soot particles produced by propane combustion resulted in higher EC : TC (total carbon) ratios and they were more light absorbing than particles generated by ethylene combustion. Values of the mass absorption cross section (MAC) and of the Ångström absorption exponent (AAE) turned out to be compatible with the literature, even if there were some specific differences. The comprehensive characterization of the MISG soot particles is an important piece of information to design and perform experiments in atmospheric simulation chambers. Particles with well-known properties can be used, for example, to investigate the possible interactions between soot and other atmospheric pollutants, the effects of meteorological variables on soot properties, and the oxidative and toxicological potential of soot particles.

In this article the authors describe a modified surgical technique developed to enhance the classical irrigation and debridement procedure to improve the possibilities of retaining a total hip arthroplasty (THA) undergoing acute periprosthetic joint infection (PJI). This technique, debridement antibiotic pearls and retention of the implant (DAPRI), aims to remove the intra-articular biofilm allowing a higher and prolonged local antibiotic concentration by using calcium sulphate antibiotic-added beads. The combination of 3 different surgical techniques (tumour-like synovectomy, Argon Beam application and chlorhexidine gluconate brushing) might enhance the disruption and removal of the bacterial biofilm which is the main responsible of antibiotics and antibodies resistance. The timing of the diagnosis (6 weeks from the original surgery or 1 week from clinical symptoms appearance in the case of an hematogenous infection) and the preoperative isolation of the germ are fundamental in order to obtain a satisfactory outcome. A 12-week course of postoperative antibiotic therapy (6 weeks I.V. and 6 weeks oral) complete the postoperative protocol used by the authors. The DAPRI technique might represent a safe and more conservative treatment for acute and early hematogenous PJI.

One of the main neutron sources for the astrophysical s process is the reaction ^{13}C(α,n)^{16}O, taking place in thermally pulsing asymptotic giant branch stars at temperatures around 90 MK. To model the nucleosynthesis during this process the reaction cross section needs to be known in the 150-230 keV energy window (Gamow peak). At these sub-Coulomb energies, cross section direct measurements are severely affected by the low event rate, making us rely on input from indirect methods and extrapolations from higher-energy direct data. This leads to an uncertainty in the cross section at the relevant energies too high to reliably constrain the nuclear physics input to s-process calculations. We present the results from a new deep-underground measurement of ^{13}C(α,n)^{16}O, covering the energy range 230-300 keV, with drastically reduced uncertainties over previous measurements and for the first time providing data directly inside the s-process Gamow peak. Selected stellar models have been computed to estimate the impact of our revised reaction rate. For stars of nearly solar composition, we find sizeable variations of some isotopes, whose production is influenced by the activation of close-by branching points that are sensitive to the neutron density, in particular, the two radioactive nuclei ^{60}Fe and ^{205}Pb, as well as ^{152}Gd.

Understanding the sources of light-absorbing organic (brown) carbon (BrC) and its interaction with black carbon (BC) and other non-refractory particulate matter (NR-PM) fractions is important for reducing uncertainties in the aerosol direct radiative forcing. In this study, we combine multiple filter-based techniques to achieve long-term, spectrally resolved, source- and species-specific atmospheric absorption closure. We determine the mass absorption efficiency (MAE) in dilute bulk solutions at 370 nm to be equal to 1.4 m2 g−1 for fresh biomass smoke, 0.7 m2 g−1 for winter-oxygenated organic aerosol (OA), and 0.13 m2 g−1 for other less absorbing OA. We apply Mie calculations to estimate the contributions of these fractions to total aerosol absorption. While enhanced absorption in the near-UV has been traditionally attributed to primary biomass smoke, here we show that anthropogenic oxygenated OA may be equally important for BrC absorption during winter, especially at an urban background site. We demonstrate that insoluble tar balls are negligible in residential biomass burning atmospheric samples of this study and thus could attribute the totality of the NR-PM absorption at shorter wavelengths to methanol-extractable BrC. As for BC, we show that the mass absorption cross-section (MAC) of this fraction is independent of its source, while we observe evidence for a filter-based lensing effect associated with the presence of NR-PM components. We find that bare BC has a MAC of 6.3 m2 g−1 at 660 nm and an absorption Ångström exponent of 0.93 ± 0.16, while in the presence of coatings its absorption is enhanced by a factor of ∼ 1.4. Based on Mie calculations of closure between observed and predicted total light absorption, we provide an indication for a suppression of the filter-based lensing effect by BrC. The total absorption reduction remains modest, ∼ 10 %–20 % at 370 nm, and is restricted to shorter wavelengths, where BrC absorption is significant. Overall, our results allow an assessment of the relative importance of the different aerosol fractions to the total absorption for aerosols from a wide range of sources and atmospheric ages. When integrated with the solar spectrum at 300–900 nm, bare BC is found to contribute around two-thirds of the solar radiation absorption by total carbonaceous aerosols, amplified by the filter-based lensing effect (with an interquartile range, IQR, of 8 %–27 %), while the IQR of the contributions by particulate BrC is 6 %–13 % (13 %–20 % at the rural site during winter). Future studies that will directly benefit from these results include (a) optical modelling aiming at understanding the absorption profiles of a complex aerosol composed of BrC, BC and lensing-inducing coatings; (b) source apportionment aiming at understanding the sources of BC and BrC from the aerosol absorption profiles; (c) global modelling aiming at quantifying the most important aerosol absorbers., Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics, 21 (17), ISSN:1680-7375, ISSN:1680-7367

Background: Shell hydrogen burning during the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) phase through the oxygen isotopes has been indicated as a key process that is needed to understand the observed O 18 / O 16 relative abundance in presolar grains and in stellar atmospheres. This ratio is strongly influenced by the relative strengths of the reactions O 18 ( p , α ) N 15 and O 18 ( p , γ ) F 19 in low-mass AGB stars. While the former channel has been the focus of a large number of measurements, the ( p , γ ) reaction path has only recently received some attention and its stellar reaction rate over a wide temperature range rests on only one measurement. Purpose: Our aim is the direct measurement of states in F 19 as populated through the reaction O 18 ( p , γ ) F 19 to better determine their influence on the astrophysical reaction rate, and more generally to improve the understanding of the nuclear structure of F 19 .Method: Branchings and resonance strengths were measured in the proton energy range E p lab = 150 – 400 keV , using a high-purity germanium detector inside a massive lead shield. The measurement took place in the ultra-low-background environment of the Laboratory for Underground Nuclear Astrophysics (LUNA) experiment at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory, leading to a highly increased sensitivity. Results: The uncertainty of the γ branchings and strengths was improved for all four resonances in the studied energy range; many new transitions were observed in the case of the 334 keV resonance, and individual γ decays of the 215 keV resonance were measured for the first time. In addition a number of transitions to intermediate states that decay through α emission were identified. The strengths of the observed resonances are generally in agreement with literature values. Conclusions: Our measurements substantially confirm previous determinations of the relevant resonance strengths. Therefore the O 18 ( p , γ ) F 19 reaction rate does not change with respect to the reaction rate reported in the compilations commonly adopted in the extant computations of red-giant branch and AGB stellar models. Nevertheless, our measurements definitely exclude a nonstandard scenario for the fluorine nucleosynthesis and a nuclear physics solution for the O 18 depletion observed in Group 2 oxygen-rich stardust grains.

Thermal–optical analysis is widely adopted for the quantitative determination of total (TC), organic (OC), and elemental (EC) carbon in atmospheric aerosol sampled by suitable filters. Nevertheless, the methodology suffers from several uncertainties and artifacts such as the well-known issue of charring affecting the OC–EC separation. In the standard approach, the effect of the possible presence of brown carbon, BrC, in the sample is neglected. BrC is a fraction of OC, usually produced by biomass burning with a thermic behavior intermediate between OC and EC. BrC is optically active: it shows an increasing absorbance when the wavelength moves to the blue–UV region of the electromagnetic spectrum. Definitively, the thermal–optical characterization of carbonaceous aerosol should be reconsidered to address the possible BrC content in the sample under analysis. We introduce here a modified Sunset Lab Inc. EC–OC analyzer. Starting from a standard commercial instrument, the unit has been modified at the physics department of the University of Genoa (Italy), making possible the alternative use of the standard laser diode at λ=635 nm and of a new laser diode at λ=405 nm. In this way, the optical transmittance through the sample can be monitored at both wavelengths. Since at shorter wavelengths the BrC absorbance is higher, a better sensitivity to this species is gained. The modified instrument also gives the possibility to quantify the BrC concentration in the sample at both wavelengths. The new unit has been thoroughly tested, with both artificial and real-world aerosol samples: the first experiment, in conjunction with the multi-wavelength absorbance analyzer (MWAA; Massabò et al., 2013, 2015), resulted in the first direct determination of the BrC mass absorption coefficient (MAC) at λ=405 nm: MAC =23±1 m2 g−1.

The 18O(p,α)15N reaction affects the synthesis of 15N, 18O and 19F isotopes, whose abundances can be used to probe the nucleosynthesis and mixing processes occurring deep inside asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars. We performed a low-background direct measurement of the 18O(p,α)15N reaction cross-section at the Laboratory for Underground Nuclear Astrophysics (LUNA) from center of mass energy Ec.m.=340 keV down to Ec.m.=55 keV, the lowest energy measured to date corresponding to a cross-section of less than 1 picobarn/sr. The strength of a key resonance at center of mass energy Er=90 keV was found to be a factor of 10 higher than previously reported. A multi-channel R-matrix analysis of our and other data available in the literature was performed. Over a wide temperature range, T=0.01–1.00 GK, our new astrophysical rate is both more accurate and precise than recent evaluations. Stronger constraints can now be placed on the physical processes controlling nucleosynthesis in AGB stars with interesting consequences on the abundance of 18O in these stars and in stardust grains, specifically on the production sites of oxygen-rich Group II grains., SCOPUS: ar.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

Receptor modelling techniques are widely used in order to identify the main natural and anthropogenic processes driving aerosol levels at a receptor. In this work, Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) was used to apportion PM2.5 levels at a traffic site (Msida) located in a coastal town. 180 filters collected throughout a yearly sampling campaign conducted in 2016, were chemically characterized by light absorbance analysis, x-ray fluorescence and ion chromatography in order to determine the concentrations of black carbon, 17 elements and 5 ions, respectively. The resulting chemical data base was used in conjunction with PMF in order to identify the 7 components affecting the PM2.5 levels at the receptor site. Six of these sources are considered to be typical of the atmospheric composition of coastal traffic sites: traffic (27.3%), ammonium sulfate (23.6%), Saharan dust (15%), aged sea salt (12.7%), shipping (5%) and fresh sea salt (4.6%). This is the first time that such a study was carried out in Malta and helps in understanding the aerosol pollution climate of the Central Mediterranean, which is still relatively understudied when compared to the Eastern and Western Mediterranean. Furthermore, we have isolated a factor exclusive to Malta: the fireworks component, which is responsible for 2.9% of the PM2.5 and which has health implications due to its chemical composition. The results of this work should also serve to guide the policy makers in achieving the necessary emission reductions in order to achieve the WHO guideline for PM2.5 by 2020.

The interplay of bio-aerosol dispersion and impact, meteorology, air quality is gaining increasing interest in the wide spectrum of atmospheric science. Experiments conducted inside confined artificial environments, such as the Atmospheric Simulations Chambers (ASCs), where atmospheric conditions and composition are controlled, can provide valuable information on bio-aerosol viability, dispersion, and impact. We focus here on the reproducible aerosolization and injection of viable microorganisms into an ASC, the first and crucial step of any experimental protocol to expose bio-aerosol at different atmospheric conditions. We compare the performance of three nebulizers specifically designed for bioaerosol applications: the Collison nebulizer, the Blaustein Atomizing Modules (BLAM) and the Sparging Liquid Aerosol Generator (SLAG), all manufactured and commercialized by CH TECHNOLOGIES. The comparison refers to operating conditions and the concentration of viable bacteria at the nebulizer outlet, with the final goal to measure the reproducibility of the nebulization procedure and assess the application in experiments at ASCs. A typical bacterial test model, Escherichia coli (ATCC® 25922™), was selected for such characterization. Bacteria suspensions, with a concentration around 108 CFU ml−1, were first aerosolized at different air pressures and collected by a Liquid Impinger, to obtain a correlation curve between airflow and nebulized bacteria, for each generator. Afterwards, bacteria were aerosolized inside the atmospheric simulation chamber ChAMBRe (Chamber for Aerosol Modelling and Bio-aerosol Research) to measure the reproducibility of the whole procedure. An overall reproducibility of 11 % was obtained with each nebulizer through a set of baseline experiments.

Carbon is present in the atmosphere not only as $$\hbox {CO}_2$$ CO 2 and other gaseous compounds: it is also one of the major components of the atmospheric aerosols. Carbonaceous Aerosols, CA, have a high but still not fully understood impact on climate and human health, furthermore, their composition is part of the “fingerprint” characteristic of different “sources” of airborne Particulate Matter (PM). The set of methodologies to quantify the concentration of specific carbonaceous species in the atmospheric aerosols is extremely ample, however a completely assessed standard has not been defined yet. In this review article we summarize the state of the art in such wide and multi-disciplinary field, with a focus on optical and thermo-optical methodologies and insights on the more relevant open problems.

In this study, the applicability of a benchtop polar photometer (PP_UniMI) to retrieve multi-wavelength aerosol absorption coefficient data by off-line measurements of the Multi-Angle Absorption Photometer (MAAP) sample spots is presented. MAAP is a widespread single wavelength online instrument providing the aerosol absorption coefficient and the equivalent black carbon concentration. In this work, MAAP samples collected during four different campaigns were analysed off-line with PP_UniMI. First of all, data from PP_UniMI and MAAP were compared to investigate contributions to measurement uncertainties. In particular, the role of the following assumptions performed in the MAAP was investigated: 1) reconstructing angular distribution of light scattered by filter samples from measurements at three fixed angles using analytical functions; 2) setting the fraction of the back-scattered radiation by the blank filter (BM) at a fixed value BM = 0.7; 3) assuming a fixed value for the asymmetry factor g = 0.75. Samples collected at several sites showed an agreement within 5% when data from the two instruments were retrieved using the same approximations (i.e. backscattered radiation from the filter matrix BM set at a fixed value, phase functions reconstructed by analytical functions from measurements at 3 angles, same asymmetry factor) in the data retrieval algorithm. Conversely, larger differences (14% on average) between off-line measurements and averaged MAAP data were obtained when the high-angular resolved information available by PP_UniMI was exploited. By analysing the role of MAAP assumptions for σap retrieval, it resulted that fixing BM = 0.7 was the main responsible for the detected differences. Indeed, high-angular resolved off-line measurements by PP_UniMI allow to directly measure BM, obtaining BM = 0.88 on white spots. It is noteworthy that the observed results were similar at all investigated sites, so they proved to be independent of the aerosol type and can likely be attributed to instrumental effects. Moreover, a sensitivity test was carried out also to check the impact of the fixed value used for the asymmetry factor (set at g = 0.75 in both instruments). Varying g values within the typical range for ambient aerosol (0.50–0.75) the estimate of aerosol absorbance ABS (directly obtained from PP_UniMI measurements and linked to σap) was affected by 8% at most, thus being a minor source of uncertainty in the calculation. The effect of the variability in blank spots used for off-line analyses was also evaluated and resulted in a contribution smaller than 3% to the uncertainty of the methodology employed. Finally, the possibility of exploiting multi-wavelength assessment of absorption coefficients is an added value of PP_UniMI; indeed, it allows to estimate the contribution of different aerosol sources and components to the absorption coefficient using MAAP tapes used in present or past campaigns., The authors acknowledge the Italian Ministry of Research and the National Institute of Nuclear Physics for having supported this research in the PRIN2007-project and the INFN-TRACCIA experiment, respectively. In the frame of the EMEP/ACTRIS/COLOSSAL campaign in Milan during winter 2018, equivalent black carbon measurements using the Aethalometer 31 (AE31), the Aethalometer 33 (AE33), and the Multi-Angle Absorption Photometer (MAAP) were carried out together with levoglucosan analyses on 12-h resolved PM2.5 samples collected in parallel. From AE31 and AE33 data, the loading-corrected aerosol attenuation coefficients (bATN) were calculated at 7 wavelengths (λs, where λ = 370, 470, 520, 590, 660, 880, 950 nm). Aerosol absorption coefficient at 637 nm (babs_MAAP) was determined by MAAP measurements. Furthermore, babs was also measured at 4 wavelengths (405, 532, 635, 780 nm) on the 12-h resolved PM2.5 samples by a polar photometer (PP_UniMI). After comparing PP_UniMI and MAAP results, we exploited PP_UniMI data to evaluate the filter multiple-scattering enhancement parameter at different wavelengths for AE31 and AE33. We obtained instrument- and wavelength-dependent multiple-scattering parameters by linear regression of the Aethalometer bATN against the babs measured by PP_UniMI. We found significant filter material, and hence instrumental, dependence of the multiple-scattering enhancement parameter with the difference up to 30 % between the AE31 and the AE33 tapes. The wavelength dependence and day/night variations were small – the difference between the smallest and largest value was up to 6 %. Data from the different instruments were used as input to the so-called “Aethalometer model” for optical source apportionment and instrument-dependence of the results was investigated. Inconsistencies among the source apportionment were found fixing the AE31 and AE33 multiple-scattering enhancement parameters to their usual values. Opposite, optimised multiple-scattering enhancement parameters led to 5 % agreement among the approaches. Also, the component-apportionment “MWAA model” was applied to the dataset. It resulted less sensitive to the instrument and the number of wavelengths, whereas significant differences in the determination of the absorption Ångström exponent for brown carbon were found (up to 22 %).

Accounting for the wavelength- and source-dependent optical absorption properties of the abundant light-absorbing organic (brown) carbon (BrC) and the mixing state of atmospheric black carbon (BC) are essential to reduce the large uncertainty in aerosol radiative forcing. Estimation of BrC absorption online by subtraction is highly uncertain and may be biased if not decoupled from the potential BC absorption enhancement (lensing) due to non-refractory (organic and inorganic) coating acquisition.Here, the reported total particulate absorption is based on long-term, filter-based seven-wavelength Aethalometer (AE33 model) data, corrected for multiple scattering effects with Multi-Wavelength Absorbance Analyzer (5λ MWAA) measurements. Using ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy absorbance measurements along with particle size distributions obtained by a scanning mobility particle sizer, we have conducted Mie calculations to assess the importance of source-specific extractable particulate BrC (Moschos et al., 2018) versus BC absorption.For the species-specific optical closure, the wavelength dependence of bare BC absorption is estimated using MWAA measurements upon successive filter extractions to remove the influence of BrC/coatings. The lensing contribution, supported by observations from field-emission scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, is estimated at longer wavelengths using a refined proxy for the BC coating thickness. The approach is validated independently by applying a novel positive matrix factorization-based approach on the calibrated total AE33 absorption data.Based on the observational constraints established in this study, we demonstrate for various distinct case studies that the interplay between lensing and BrC absorption results in lower than expected BC absorption at shorter wavelengths. This indicates that the volume additivity assumption is not valid for particulate absorption by internally mixed heterogeneous atmospheric aerosol populations. These comprehensive experimental analyses verify the BC lensing suppression predicted for simplified core-shell structures containing moderately absorbing BrC (Lack & Cappa, 2010). The implications discussed in this work are relevant for co-emitted species from biomass burning or aged plumes with high BrC to BC mass/absorption ratio. ReferencesMoschos, V., Kumar, N. Direct measurements of reaction cross-sections at astrophysical energies often require the use of solid targets able to withstand high ion beam currents for extended periods of time. Thus, monitoring target thickness, isotopic composition, and target stoichiometry during data taking is critical to account for possible target modifications and to reduce uncertainties in the final cross-section results. A common technique used for these purposes is the Nuclear Resonant Reaction Analysis (NRRA), which however requires that a narrow resonance be available inside the dynamic range of the accelerator used. In cases when this is not possible, as for example the $$^{13}\hbox {C}(\alpha ,\hbox {n})^{16}\hbox {O}$$ reaction recently studied at low energies at the Laboratory for Underground Nuclear Astrophysics (LUNA) in Italy, alternative approaches must be found. Here, we present a new application of the shape analysis of primary $$\gamma $$ rays emitted by the $$^{13}\hbox {C}(\hbox {p},\gamma )^{14}\hbox {N}$$ radiative capture reaction. This approach was used to monitor $$^{13}\hbox {C}$$ target degradation in situ during the $$^{13}\hbox {C}(\alpha ,\hbox {n})^{16}\hbox {O}$$ data taking campaign. The results obtained are in agreement with evaluations subsequently performed at Atomki (Hungary) using the NRRA method. A preliminary application for the extraction of the $$^{13}\hbox {C}(\alpha ,\hbox {n})^{16}\hbox {O}$$ reaction cross-section at one beam energy is also reported.

Light elements were produced in the first few minutes of the Universe through a sequence of nuclear reactions known as Big Bang nucleosynthesis (BBN)1,2. Among the light elements produced during BBN1,2, deuterium is an excellent indicator of cosmological parameters because its abundance is highly sensitive to the primordial baryon density and also depends on the number of neutrino species permeating the early Universe. Although astronomical observations of primordial deuterium abundance have reached percent accuracy3, theoretical predictions4,5,6 based on BBN are hampered by large uncertainties on the cross-section of the deuterium burning D(p,γ)3He reaction. Here we show that our improved cross-sections of this reaction lead to BBN estimates of the baryon density at the 1.6 percent level, in excellent agreement with a recent analysis of the cosmic microwave background7. Improved cross-section data were obtained by exploiting the negligible cosmic-ray background deep underground at the Laboratory for Underground Nuclear Astrophysics (LUNA) of the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (Italy)8,9. We bombarded a high-purity deuterium gas target10 with an intense proton beam from the LUNA 400-kilovolt accelerator11 and detected the γ-rays from the nuclear reaction under study with a high-purity germanium detector. Our experimental results settle the most uncertain nuclear physics input to BBN calculations and substantially improve the reliability of using primordial abundances to probe the physics of the early Universe.

Cryoconite, a sediment found on the surface of glaciers, is known for its ability to accumulate radionuclides. New data on cryoconite from the Morteratsch glacier (Switzerland) are presented to shed light on the mechanisms that control the distribution of radioactivity in cryoconite. Among the radionuclides detected in our samples, we have identified 108mAg, an artificial species which has never been observed in terrestrial environments before. This finding supports that cryoconite has an extraordinary ability to accumulate radioactivity. Our results also show that the radioactivity of cryoconite from a single glacier is far from uniform. Both the absolute amount of radioactivity and the relative contribution of single radionuclides are highly variable in samples from the Morteratsch glacier. To investigate the processes responsible for such variability, we have explored the correlation between radionuclides, organic and inorganic carbon fractions and the morphological features of cryoconite deposits. We have found that the degree of connection between cryoconite and supraglacial hydrology is particularly important, since it strongly influences the accumulation of radionuclides in cryoconite. Cryoconite holes connected with supraglacial channels are rich in cosmogenic 7Be; in contrast, poorly connected deposits are rich in artificial fallout radionuclides and elemental carbon. The very different half-lives of 7Be and artificial radionuclides allowed us to discuss our findings in relation to the age and maturity of cryoconite deposits, highlighting the potential use of radionuclides to investigate hydrological supraglacial processes and material cycling at the surface of glaciers.

The aim of experimental nuclear astrophysics is to provide information on the nuclear processes involved in astrophysical scenarios at the relevant energy range. However, the measurement of the cross section of nuclear reactions at low energies present formidable difficulties due to the very low reaction rates often overwhelmed by the background. Several approaches have been proposed and exploited to overcome such severe obstacles: in such frame, the idea to install a low energy - high intensity ion accelerator deep underground, to gain high luminosity while reducing the cosmic ray background, brought more than 25 years ago, to the pilot LUNA experiment. LUNA stands for Laboratory for Underground Nuclear Astrophysics: in the cave under the Gran Sasso mountain (in Italy) first a 50 kV and then a 400 kV single-ended accelerator for protons and alphas were deployed and produced plenty of data mainly on reactions of the H-burning phase in stars. Recently, similar facilities have been installed and/or proposed in other underground laboratories in US and China. LUNA as well is going to make a big step forward, with a new machine in the MV range which will be able to provide intense beams of protons, alphas and carbon ions. The rationale of underground nuclear astrophysics will be presented together with the last updates on the ongoing research programs.

International audience; The coastal aerosol represents a complex mixing between sea spray aerosols locally generated at the sea surface and a component generated by natural and/or anthropogenic sources on the nearby land. The aim of this paper is to study the atmospheric concentrations of carbonaceous compounds as measured in the coastal zone of the Northern Adriatic Sea between April 2017 and April 2018. The results show a quite large contribution of carbonaceous compounds, even when the sampled air mass is predominantly maritime. Although it is generally assumed that 70% and 90% of bulk organic carbon (OC) and elemental carbon (EC) concentrations, respectively, are found in the fine mode, we observed higher OC and EC concentrations in the coarse fraction (up to about 37% and 25%, respectively). This confirms the occurrence of mixing between anthropogenic matter and sea spray, mainly composed of coarse aerosol particles, during the atmospheric transport over the Mediterranean basin.

Among the reactions involved in the production and destruction of deuterium during Big Bang Nucleosynthesis, the deuterium-burning D(p,$$\gamma $$)$$^3$$He reaction has the largest uncertainty and limits the precision of theoretical estimates of primordial deuterium abundance. Here we report the results of a careful commissioning of the experimental setup used to measure the cross-section of the D(p,$$\gamma $$)$$^3$$He reaction at the Laboratory for Underground Nuclear Astrophysics of the Gran Sasso Laboratory (Italy). The commissioning was aimed at minimising all sources of systematic uncertainty in the measured cross sections. The overall systematic error achieved ($$< 3\%$$) will enable improved predictions of BBN deuterium abundance.

The observation of oxygen isotopes in giant stars sheds light on mixing processes operating in their interiors. Due to the very strong correlation between nuclear burning and mixing processes it is very important to reduce the uncertainty on the cross sections of the nuclear reactions that are involved. In this paper we focus our attention on the reaction O 18 ( p , γ ) 19 F . While the O 18 ( p , α ) 15 N channel is thought to be dominant, the (p,γ) channel can still be an important component in stellar burning in giants, depending on the low energy cross section. So far only extrapolations from higher-energy measurements exist and recent estimates vary by orders of magnitude. These large uncertainties call for an experimental reinvestigation of this reaction. We present a direct measurement of the O 18 ( p , γ ) 19 F cross section using a high-efficiency 4π BGO summing detector at the Laboratory for Underground Nuclear Astrophysics (LUNA). The reaction cross section has been directly determined for the first time from 140 keV down to 85 keV and the different cross section components have been obtained individually. The previously highly uncertain strength of the 90 keV resonance was found to be 0.53 ± 0.07 neV, three orders of magnitude lower than an indirect estimate based on nuclear properties of the resonant state and a factor of 20 lower than a recently established upper limit, excluding the possibility that the 90 keV resonance can contribute significantly to the stellar reaction rate.

Receptor Models are tools widely adopted in source apportionment studies. We describe here an experiment in which we integrated two different approaches, i.e. Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) and Chemical Mass Balance (CMB) to apportion a set of PM10 (i.e. Particulate Matter with aerodynamic diameter lower than 10 μm) concentration values. The study was performed in the city of Genoa (Italy): a sampling campaign was carried out collecting daily PM10 samples for about two months in an urban background site. PM10 was collected on Quartz fiber filters by a low-volume sampler. A quite complete speciation of PM samples was obtained via Energy Dispersive-X Ray Fluorescence (ED-XRF, for elements), Ionic Chromatography (IC, for major ions and levoglucosan), thermo-optical Analysis (TOT, for organic and elemental carbon). The chemical analyses provided the input database for source apportionment by both PMF and CMB. Source profiles were directly calculated from the input data by PMF while in the CMB runs they were first calculated by averaging the profiles of similar sources collected in the European database SPECIEUROPE. Differences between the two receptor models emerged in particular with PM10 sources linked to very local processes. For this reason, PMF source profiles were adopted in refined CMB runs thus testing a new hybrid approach. Finally, PMF and the “tuned” CMB showed a better agreement even if some discrepancies could not completely been resolved. In this work, we compared the results coming from the last available PMF and CMB versions applied on a set of PM10 samples. Input profiles used in CMB analysis were obtained by averaging the profiles of the new European SPECIEUROPE database. The main differences between PMF and CMB results were linked to very local processes: we obtained the best solution by integrating the two different approaches with the implementation of some output PMF profiles to CMB runs.

Accurate and temporally consistent measurements of light absorbing aerosol (LAA) heating rate (HR) and of its source apportionment (fossil-fuel, FF; biomass-burning, BB) and speciation (black and brown Carbon; BC, BrC) are needed to evaluate LAA short-term climate forcing. For this purpose, wavelength- and time-dependent accurate LAA absorption coefficients are required. HR was experimentally determined and apportioned (sources/species) in the EMEP/ACTRIS/COLOSSAL-2018 winter campaign in Milan (urban-background site). Two Aethalometers (AE31/AE33) were installed together with a MAAP, CPC, OPC, a low volume sampler (PM2.5) and radiation instruments. AE31/AE33 multiple-scattering correction factors (C) were determined using two reference systems for the absorption coefficient: 1) 5-wavelength PP_UniMI with low time resolution (12 h, applied to PM2.5 samples); 2) timely-resolved MAAP data at a single wavelength. Using wavelength- and time-independent C values for the AE31 and AE33 obtained with the same reference device, the total HR showed a consistency (i.e. reproducibility) with average values comparable at 95% probability. However, if different reference devices/approaches are used, i.e. MAAP is chosen as reference instead of a PP_UniMI, the HR can be overestimated by 23–30% factor (by both AE31/AE33). This became more evident focusing on HR apportionment: AE33 data (corrected by a wavelength- and time-independent C) showed higher HRFF (+24 ± 1%) and higher HRBC (+10 ± 1%) than that of AE31. Conversely, HRBB and HRBrC were −28 ± 1% and −29 ± 1% lower for AE33 compared to AE31. These inconsistencies were overcome by introducing a wavelength-dependent Cλ for both AE31 and AE33, or using multi-wavelength apportionment methods, highlighting the need for further studies on the influence of wavelength corrections for HR determination. Finally, the temporally-resolved determination of C resulted in a diurnal cycle of the HR not statistically different whatever the source- speciation- apportionment used.

We introduce the LUNA neutron detector array developed for the investigation of the 13C( α , n )16O reaction towards its astrophysical s -process Gamow peak in the low-background environment of the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS). Eighteen 3He counters are arranged in two different configurations (in a vertical and a horizontal orientation) to optimize neutron detection efficiency, target handling and target cooling over the investigated energy range E α , lab = 300 − 400 keV (E n = 2 . 2 − 2 . 6 MeV in emitted neutron energy). As a result of the deep underground location, the passive shielding of the setup and active background suppression using pulse shape discrimination, we reached a total background rate of 1 . 23 ± 0 . 12 counts/hour. This resulted in an improvement of two orders of magnitude over the state of the art allowing a direct measurement of the 13C( α , n )16O cross-section down to E α , lab = 300 keV. The absolute neutron detection efficiency of the setup was determined using the 51V(p,n)51Cr reaction and an AmBe radioactive source, and completed with a Geant4 simulation. We determined a (34 ± 3)% and (38 ± 3)% detection efficiency for the vertical and horizontal configurations, respectively, for E n = 2 . 4 MeV neutrons.

This paper presents new laboratory measurements of the mass absorption efficiency (MAE) between 375 and 850 nm for 12 individual samples of mineral dust from different source areas worldwide and in two size classes: PM10. 6 (mass fraction of particles of aerodynamic diameter lower than 10.6 µm) and PM2. 5 (mass fraction of particles of aerodynamic diameter lower than 2.5 µm). The experiments were performed in the CESAM simulation chamber using mineral dust generated from natural parent soils and included optical and gravimetric analyses. The results show that the MAE values are lower for the PM10. 6 mass fraction (range 37–135 × 10−3 m2 g−1 at 375 nm) than for the PM2. 5 (range 95–711 × 10−3 m2 g−1 at 375 nm) and decrease with increasing wavelength as λ−AAE, where the Ångström absorption exponent (AAE) averages between 3.3 and 3.5, regardless of size. The size independence of AAE suggests that, for a given size distribution, the dust composition did not vary with size for this set of samples. Because of its high atmospheric concentration, light absorption by mineral dust can be competitive with black and brown carbon even during atmospheric transport over heavy polluted regions, when dust concentrations are significantly lower than at emission. The AAE values of mineral dust are higher than for black carbon (∼ 1) but in the same range as light-absorbing organic (brown) carbon. As a result, depending on the environment, there can be some ambiguity in apportioning the aerosol absorption optical depth (AAOD) based on spectral dependence, which is relevant to the development of remote sensing of light-absorbing aerosols and their assimilation in climate models. We suggest that the sample-to-sample variability in our dataset of MAE values is related to regional differences in the mineralogical composition of the parent soils. Particularly in the PM2. 5 fraction, we found a strong linear correlation between the dust light-absorption properties and elemental iron rather than the iron oxide fraction, which could ease the application and the validation of climate models that now start to include the representation of the dust composition, as well as for remote sensing of dust absorption in the UV–vis spectral region.

Cryoconite is extremely rich in natural and artificial radionuclides, but a comprehensive discussion about its ability to accumulate radioactivity is lacking. A characterization of cryoconite from two Alpine glaciers is presented and discussed. Results confirm that cryoconite is among the most radioactive environmental matrices, with activity concentrations exceeding 10,000 Bq kg−1 for single radionuclides. Atomic and activity ratios of Pu and Cs radioactive isotopes reveal that the artificial radioactivity of Alpine cryoconite is mostly related to the stratospheric fallout from nuclear weapon tests and to the 1986 Chernobyl accidents. The signature of cryoconite radioactivity is thus influenced by both local and more widespread events. The extreme accumulation of radioactivity in cryoconite can be explained only considering the glacial environment as a whole, and particularly the interaction between ice, meltwater, cryoconite and atmospheric deposition. Cryoconite is an ideal monitor to investigate the deposition and occurrence of natural and artificial radioactive species in glacial environment.

About 25 year ago LUNA (Laboratory for Underground Nuclear Astrophysics) opened the era of underground nuclear astrophysics installing a home-made 50 kV ion accelerator under the Gran Sasso mountain. A second machine, with a terminal voltage of 400 kV, was then installed and it is still in operation. Most of the processes so far investigated were connected to the physics of solar neutrinos and hence to the hydrogen burning phase in stars. The interest to next and warmers stages of star evolution (i.e., helium and carbon burning) pushed a new project based on a ion accelerator in the MV range called LUNA-MV. Thanks to a special grant of the Italian Ministry of Research (MIUR), INFN is now building, inside one of the major hall at Gran Sasso, a new facility which will host a 3.5 MV single-ended accelerator able to deliver proton, helium and carbon beams with intensity in the mA range. The scientific program for the 1st phase of the LUNA-MV life will be described with the first experiment scheduled for June 2019.

The NeNa and the MgAl cycles play a fundamental role in the nucleosynthesis of asymptotic giant branch stars undergoing hot bottom burning. The Na 23 ( p , γ ) 24 Mg reaction links these two cycles and a precise determination of its rate is required to correctly estimate the contribution of these stars to the chemical evolution of various isotopes of Na, Mg and Al. At temperatures of 50 ≲ T ≲ 110 MK , narrow resonances at E p = 140 and 251 keV are the main contributors to the reaction rate, in addition to the direct capture that dominates in the lower part of the temperature range. We present new measurements of the strengths of these resonances at the Laboratory for Underground Nuclear Astrophysics (LUNA). We have used two complementary detection approaches: high efficiency with a 4π BGO detector for the 140 keV resonance, and high resolution with a HPGe detector for the 251 keV resonance. Thanks to the reduced cosmic ray background of LUNA, we were able to determine the resonance strength of the 251 keV resonance as ω γ = 482 ( 82 ) μ eV and observed new gamma ray transitions for the decay of the corresponding state in Mg 24 at E x = 11931 keV . With the highly efficient BGO detector, we observed a signal for the 140 keV resonance for the first time in a direct measurement, resulting in a strength of ω γ 140 = 1.46 − 0.53 + 0.58 neV (68% CL). Our measurement reduces the uncertainty of the Na 23 ( p , γ ) 24 Mg reaction rate in the temperature range from 0.05 to 0.1 GK to at most − 35 % + 50 % at 0.07 GK. Accordingly, our results imply a significant reduction of the uncertainties in the nucleosynthesis calculations.

In this paper, a new methodology coupling aerosol optical and chemical parameters in the same source apportionment study is reported. In addition to results on source contributions, this approach provides information such as estimates for the atmospheric absorption Ångström exponent (α) of the sources and mass absorption cross sections (MACs) for fossil fuel emissions at different wavelengths. A multi-time resolution source apportionment study using the Multilinear Engine (ME-2) was performed on a PM10 dataset with different time resolutions (24, 12, and 1 h) collected during two different seasons in Milan (Italy) in 2016. Samples were optically analysed by an in-house polar photometer to retrieve the aerosol absorption coefficient bap (in Mm−1) at four wavelengths (λ=405, 532, 635, and 780 nm) and were chemically characterized for elements, ions, levoglucosan, and carbonaceous components. The dataset joining chemically speciated and optical data was the input for the multi-time resolution receptor model; this approach was proven to strengthen the identification of sources, thus being particularly useful when important chemical markers (e.g. levoglucosan, elemental carbon) are not available. The final solution consisted of eight factors (nitrate, sulfate, resuspended dust, biomass burning, construction works, traffic, industry, aged sea salt); the implemented constraints led to a better physical description of factors and the bootstrap analysis supported the goodness of the solution. As for bap apportionment, consistent with what was expected, biomass burning and traffic were the main contributors to aerosol absorption in the atmosphere. A relevant feature of the approach proposed in this work is the possibility of retrieving a lot of other information about optical parameters; for example, in contrast to the more traditional approach used by optical source apportionment models, here we obtained source-dependent α values without any a priori assumption (α biomass burning =1.83 and α fossil fuels =0.80). In addition, the MACs estimated for fossil fuel emissions were consistent with literature values. It is worth noting that the approach presented here can also be applied using more common receptor models (e.g. EPA PMF instead of multi-time resolution ME-2) if the dataset comprises variables with the same time resolution as well as optical data retrieved by widespread instrumentation (e.g. an Aethalometer instead of in-house instrumentation).
