1. A Track-Before-Detect Algorithm for UWB Radar Sensor Networks

Abstract

Precise localization and tracking of moving non-collaborative persons and objects using a network of ultra-wideband (UWB) radar nodes has been shown to represent a practical and effective approach. In UWB radar sensor networks (RSNs), existence of strong clutter, weak target echoes, and closely spaced targets are obstacles to achieving a satisfactory tracking performance. Using a track-before-detect (TBD) approach, the waveform obtained by each node during a time period are jointly processed. Both spatial information and temporal relationship between measurements are exploited in generating all possible candidate trajectories and only the best trajectories are selected as the outcome. The effectiveness of the developed TBD technique for UWB RSNs is confirmed by numerical simulations and by two experimental results, both carried out with actual UWB signals. In the first experiment, a human target is tracked by a monostatic radar network with an average localization error of 41.9 cm with no false alarm trajectory in a cluttered outdoor environment. In the second experiment, two targets are detected by multistatic radar network with localization errors of 25.4 cm and 19.7 cm, and detection rate of the two targets is 88.75%, and no false alarm trajectory., Comment: 39 pages, 20 figures. Abstract

The CONNIE experiment uses fully depleted, high resistivity CCDs as particle detectors in an attempt to measure for the first time the Coherent Neutrino-Nucleus Elastic Scattering of antineutrinos from a nuclear reactor with silicon nuclei.This talk, given at the XV Mexican Workshop on Particles and Fields (MWPF), discussed the potential of CONNIE to perform this measurement, the installation progress at the Angra dos Reis nuclear power plant, as well as the plans for future upgrades., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures. Abstract

The CONNIE detector prototype is operating at a distance of 30 m from the core of a 3.8 GW$_{\rm th}$ nuclear reactor with the goal of establishing Charge-Coupled Devices (CCD) as a new technology for the detection of coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering. We report on the results of the engineering run with an active mass of 4 g of silicon. The CCD array is described, and the performance observed during the first year is discussed. A compact passive shield was deployed for the detector, producing an order of magnitude reduction in the background rate. The remaining background observed during the run was stable, and dominated by internal contamination in the detector packaging materials. The {\it in-situ} calibration of the detector using X-ray lines from fluorescence demonstrates good stability of the readout system. The event rates with the reactor on and off are compared, and no excess is observed coming from nuclear fission at the power plant. The upper limit for the neutrino event rate is set two orders of magnitude above the expectations for the standard model. The results demonstrate the cryogenic CCD-based detector can be remotely operated at the reactor site with stable noise below 2 e$^-$ RMS and stable background rates. The success of the engineering test provides a clear path for the upgraded 100 g detector to be deployed during 2016.

Abstract

A class of doubly-generalized low-density parity-check (D-GLDPC) codes, where single parity-check (SPC) codes are used as variable nodes (VNs), is investigated. An expression for the growth rate of the weight distribution of any D-GLDPC ensemble with a uniform check node (CN) set is presented at first, together with an analytical technique for its efficient evaluation. These tools are then used for detailed analysis of a case study, namely, a rate-1/2 D-GLDPC ensemble where all the CNs are (7,4) Hamming codes and all the VNs are length-7 SPC codes. It is illustrated how the VN representations can heavily affect the code properties and how different VN representations can be combined within the same graph to enhance some of the code parameters. The analysis is conducted over the binary erasure channel. Interesting features of the new codes include the capability of achieving a good compromise between waterfall and error floor performance while preserving graphical regularity, and values of threshold outperforming LDPC counterparts., Comment: 2009 IEEE Int. 8. Construction of Near-Optimum Burst Erasure Correcting Low-Density Parity-Check Codes

Abstract

In this paper, a simple, general-purpose and effective tool for the design of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes for iterative correction of bursts of erasures is presented. The design method consists in starting from the parity-check matrix of an LDPC code and developing an optimized parity-check matrix, with the same performance on the memory-less erasure channel, and suitable also for the iterative correction of single bursts of erasures. The parity-check matrix optimization is performed by an algorithm called pivot searching and swapping (PSS) algorithm, which executes permutations of carefully chosen columns of the parity-check matrix, after a local analysis of particular variable nodes called stopping set pivots. This algorithm can be in principle applied to any LDPC code. If the input parity-check matrix is designed for achieving good performance on the memory-less erasure channel, then the code obtained after the application of the PSS algorithm provides good joint correction of independent erasures and single erasure bursts. Numerical results are provided in order to show the effectiveness of the PSS algorithm when applied to different categories of LDPC codes., Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures. 9. A Class of LDPC Erasure Distributions with Closed-Form Threshold Expression

Abstract

In this paper, a family of low-density parity-check (LDPC) degree distributions, whose decoding threshold on the binary erasure channel (BEC) admits a simple closed form, is presented. These degree distributions are a subset of the check regular distributions (i.e. all the check nodes have the same degree), and are referred to as $p$-positive distributions. It is given proof that the threshold for a $p$-positive distribution is simply expressed by $[\lambda'(0)\rho'(1)]^{-1}$. Besides this closed form threshold expression, the $p$-positive distributions exhibit three additional properties. First, for given code rate, check degree and maximum variable degree, they are in some cases characterized by a threshold which is extremely close to that of the best known check regular distributions, under the same set of constraints. Second, the threshold optimization problem within the $p$-positive class can be solved in some cases with analytic methods, without using any numerical optimization tool. Third, these distributions can achieve the BEC capacity. The last property is shown by proving that the well-known binomial degree distributions belong to the $p$-positive family., Comment: 6 pages. 10. Generalized Stability Condition for Generalized and Doubly-Generalized LDPC Codes

Abstract

In this paper, the stability condition for low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes on the binary erasure channel (BEC) is extended to generalized LDPC (GLDPC) codes and doublygeneralized LDPC (D-GLDPC) codes. It is proved that, in both cases, the stability condition only involves the component codes with minimum distance 2. The stability condition for GLDPC codes is always expressed as an upper bound to the decoding threshold. This is not possible for D-GLDPC codes, unless all the generalized variable nodes have minimum distance at least 3. Furthermore, a condition called derivative matching is defined in the paper. This condition is sufficient for a GLDPC or DGLDPC code to achieve the stability condition with equality. If this condition is satisfied, the threshold of D-GLDPC codes (whose generalized variable nodes have all minimum distance at least 3) and GLDPC codes can be expressed in closed form., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, to appear in Proc. of IEEE ISIT 2007

Abstract

Nuclear reactors are uniquely powerful, abundant, and flavor-pure sources of antineutrinos that continue to play a vital role in the US neutrino physics program. The US reactor antineutrino physics community is a diverse interest group encompassing many detection technologies and many particle physics topics, including Standard Model and short-baseline oscillations, BSM physics searches, and reactor flux and spectrum modeling. The community's aims offer strong complimentary with numerous aspects of the wider US neutrino program and have direct relevance to most of the topical sub-groups composing the Snowmass 2021 Neutrino Frontier. Reactor neutrino experiments also have a direct societal impact and have become a strong workforce and technology development pipeline for DOE National Laboratories and universities. Abstract

Background and aimsHypertriglyceridemia is a common feature of metabolic syndrome (MetS), as well as of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), which is considered the hepatic manifestation of MetS. Fat accumulation in hepatocytes may alter mitochondrial homeostasis predisposing to advanced liver disease. Here, we report a case of a 40-year-old woman with early aggressive NAFLD due to severe hypertriglyceridemia that ensued from a combination of genetic variants and additional metabolic risk factors.MethodsGenetic screening was performed by using whole-exome sequencing (WES), and mitochondrial structures were evaluated by TEM.ResultsAt presentation, the patient is reported to have hepatomegaly, hypertriglyceridemia, and raised transaminases. Genetic analysis revealed that the patient beard heritable alterations in genes implicated in lipid handling, among which APOB, APOE, CETP, and HSPG2, accompanied by missense mutations in genes involved in mitochondrial function, i.e., AK2, ALG6, ASPA, NDUFAF1, POLG, and TMEM70. Abdominal ultrasound (US) and transient elastography were suggestive of severe hepatic steatosis and fibrosis. A liver biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH)-related fibrosis. Thus, to better outline whether mutations involved in lipid remodeling and mitochondrial function may also affect organelles’ morphology, we exploited TEM. Along with multifaceted abnormalities of mitochondrial architecture that have been already observed in patients with NAFLD, astonishing ultrastructural defects, such as mitochondrial vacuolization, sub-compartmentalization, and onion-like mitochondria, were identified.ConclusionThe anomalies reported may expand the phenotypic spectrum of mitochondrial abnormalities observed in patients with NAFLD, which may contribute to the switching toward a progressive disease.

Abstract

Background & Aims: The I148M Patatin-like Phospholipase Domain-containing 3 (PNPLA3), the rs641738 in the Membrane bound O-acyltransferase domain containing 7-transmembrane channel-like 4 (MBOAT7-TMC4) locus, and the E167K Transmembrane 6 Superfamily Member 2 (TM6SF2) polymorphisms represent the main predisposing factors to nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) development and progression. We previously generated a full knockout of MBOAT7 in HepG2 cells (MBOAT7-/-), homozygous for I148M PNPLA3. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the synergic impact of the 3 at-risk variants on liver injury and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in a large cohort of NAFLD patients, and create in vitro models of genetic NAFLD by silencing TM6SF2 in both HepG2 and MBOAT7-/- cells. Methods: NAFLD patients (n = 1380), of whom 121 had HCC, were stratified with a semiquantitative score ranging from 0 to 3 according to the number of PNPLA3, TM6SF2, and MBOAT7 at-risk variants. TM6SF2 was silenced in HepG2 (TM6SF2-/-) and MBOAT7-/- (MBOAT7-/-TM6SF2-/-) through Clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats and CRISPR-associated protein 9 (CRISPR/Cas9). Results: In NAFLD patients, the additive weight of these mutations was associated with liver disease severity and an increased risk of developing HCC. In HepG2 cells, TM6SF2 silencing altered lipid composition and induced the accumulation of microvesicular lipid droplets (LDs), whereas the MBOAT7-/-TM6SF2-/- cells showed a mixed microvesicular/macrovesicular pattern of LDs. TM6SF2 deletion strongly affected endoplasmic reticulum and mitochondria ultrastructures, thus increasing endoplasmic reticulum/oxidative stress. The mitochondrial number was increased in both TM6SF2-/- and MBOAT7-/-TM6SF2-/- models, suggesting an unbalancing in mitochondrial dynamics, and the silencing of both MBOAT7 and TM6SF2 impaired mitochondrial activity with a shift toward anaerobic glycolysis. Abstract

Background and Aims: Dyslipidemia and cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are comorbidities of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), which ranges from steatosis to hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The rs599839 A>G variant, in the CELSR2‐PSRC1‐SORT1 gene cluster, has been associated CVD, but its impact on metabolic traits and on the severity liver damage in NAFLD has not been investigated yet. Methods: We evaluated the effect of the rs599839 variant in 1426 NAFLD patients (Overall cohort) of whom 131 had HCC (NAFLD‐HCC), in 500,000 individuals from the UK Biobank Cohort (UKBBC), and in 366 HCC samples from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA). Hepatic PSRC1, SORT1 and CELSR2 expressions were evaluated by RNAseq (n = 125). Results: The rs599839 variant was associated with reduced circulating LDL, carotid intima‐media thickness, carotid plaques and hypertension (p <0.05) in NAFLD patients and with protection against dyslipidemia in UKBBC. The minor G allele was associated with higher risk of HCC, independently of fibrosis severity (odds ratio (OR): 5.62; 95% c.i. 1.77–17.84, p = 0.003), poor prognosis and advanced tumor stage (p <0.05) in the overall cohort. Hepatic PSRC1, SORT1 and CELSR2 expressions were increased in NAFLD patients carrying the rs599839 variant (p < 0.0001). SORT1 mRNA levels negatively correlated with circulating lipids and with those of genes involved in lipoprotein turnover (p < 0.0001). Conversely, PSRC1 expression was positively related to that of genes implicated in cell proliferation (p < 0.0001). In TCGA, PSRC1 over‐expression promoted more aggressive HCC development (p < 0.05). Conclusions: In sum, the rs599839 A>G variant is associated with protection against dyslipidemia and CVD in NAFLD patients, but as one it might promote HCC development by modulating SORT1 and PSRC1 expressions which impact on lipid metabolism and cell proliferation, respectively.

Abstract

Little is known about long-term maintenance of virologic suppression in HIV migrants in Italy. The study aims to compare virologic failure rates and associated factors among antiretroviral therapy (ART)-naïve migrants and natives enrolled in the ARCA database since 2007 who achieved virologic suppression within 18 months from the beginning of the ART. Kaplan-Meier method assessed the probability of virologic suppression and failure. Cox regression model was used for multivariate analysis. Of 2515 patients, 2020 (80.3%) were Italian, 286 (10.6%) migrants from low-income countries, of whom 201 (75.0%) from Africa, and 227 (9.0%) from high-income-countries. The median follow-up was 4.5 years (IQR 2.5–7). No difference was observed in the time of achievement of virological suppression in the three groups (log-rank: p = 0.5687). Higher probability of virologic failure was observed in Africans compared to Italians, to patients from high-income-countries and from low-income-countries other than Africans (Log-rank = p < 0.001). In the adjusted analysis, a higher virologic failure risk was found in Africans only compared to Italians. [HR 4.01; 95% CI 2.44–6.56, p < 0.001]. In Italy, African migrants are less likely to maintain virologic suppression compared to natives and other migrants. Targeted interventions could be needed for foreigners, especially for Africans.

Abstract

This paper proposes a new coded modulation technique, called generalized low-density parity-check (GLDPC) coded modulation, where individual redundant modulation mapping nodes are connected to code constraint nodes in a pseudorandom manner, and according to predesigned degree distributions. The main contribution of this paper is to derive a compact solution for the distribution of the squared Euclidean distance (SED) of a GLDPC coded modulation ensemble in the general case. In order to allow for the lack of symmetry of the distribution with respect to the transmitted constellation symbol sequence, the SED is averaged with respect to all possible transmitted constellation symbol sequences. This result can be used directly as a design tool for targeting a good system performance in the error floor region. Since the proposed GLDPC coded modulation scheme is also amenable to extrinsic information transfer (EXIT) chart analysis, a high degree of design freedom is thus facilitated.
