Search

Dense stellar environments as hosts of ongoing star formation increase the probability of gravitational encounters among stellar systems during the early stages of evolution. Stellar interaction may occur through non-recurring, hyperbolic or parabolic passages (a so-called 'fly-by'), through secular binary evolution, or through binary capture. In all three scenarios, the strong gravitational perturbation is expected to manifest itself in the disc structures around the individual stars. Here, we present near-infrared polarised light observations that were taken with the SPHERE/IRDIS instrument of three known interacting twin-disc systems: AS 205, EM* SR 24, and FU Orionis. The scattered light exposes spirals likely caused by the gravitational interaction. On a larger scale, we observe connecting filaments between the stars. We analyse their very complex polarised intensity and put particular attention to the presence of multiple light sources in these systems. The local angle of linear polarisation indicates the source whose light dominates the scattering process from the bridging region between the two stars. Further, we show that the polarised intensity from scattering with multiple relevant light sources results from an incoherent summation of the individuals' contribution. This can produce nulls of polarised intensity in an image, as potentially observed in AS 205. We discuss the geometry and content of the systems by comparing the polarised light observations with other data at similar resolution, namely with ALMA continuum and gas emission. Introduction It is known that cancer care is best approached by a multidisciplinary team (MDT). This became specifically true in the Covid-19 pandemic in which choices for urological cancer treatment are influenced by many factors. In some cases, delayed treatment may have consequences regarding the patient's oncological outcomes. The aim of the present article is to report our experience throughout the Covid-19 pandemic treating patients with urological neoplasms at a high-volume center. Methods We used a convenience sampling method. Cases were evaluated and discussed on an individual basis at the MDT meetings, and, after a consensus regarding delaying or scheduling treatment, patients were scheduled according to the risk of postponing the procedures. The Medically Necessary, Time-Sensitive (MeNTS) scoring system was measured in each patient; all patients answered the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Covid-19 self-screening questionnaire prior to surgery. The Covid-19-free survival rate was estimated. Results A total of 194 patients were assessed by the multidisciplinary team and finally treated, with median follow-up of 4 (interquartile range [IQR]: 2.75 to 6) months. Only two patients had Covid-19 confirmed by real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). In total, 54 patients underwent oncological surgery, 129 were treated with radiotherapy, and 11 were treated with intravenous chemotherapy. The median age was 66 years (IQR: 59 to 94 years), and the median MeNTS score in the surgically-treated cohort was 35 points (IQR: 31 to 47 points). Conclusions The evaluation and treatment of urological cancer should be conducted by an MDT; this is of utmost importance, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic. The data collected in our institution showed that most patients could be safely treated by taking all necessary precautions and discussing each case individually in the MDT meetings and performing a close follow-up.

Brown dwarfs and very low mass stars are a significant fraction of stars in our galaxy, and they are interesting laboratories to investigate planet formation in extreme conditions of low temperature and densities. In addition, the dust radial drift of particles is expected to be a more difficult barrier to overcome during the first steps of planet formation in these disks. ALMA high-angular resolution observations of few protoplanetary disks around BDs and VLMS have shown substructures as in the disks around Sun-like stars. Such observations suggest that giant planets embedded in the disks are the most likely origin of the observed substructures. However, this type of planets represent less than 2% of the confirmed exoplanets so far around all stars, and they are difficult to form by different core accretion models (either pebble or planetesimal accretion). Dedicated deep observations of disks around BDs and VLMS with ALMA and JWST will provide significant progress on understanding the main properties of these objects (e.g., disk size and mass), which is crucial for determining the physical mechanisms that rule the evolution of these disks and the effect on the potential planets that may form in these environments., Invited contribution as an article in the European Physics Journal + (accepted for publication)

Transition disks are one of the enigmas of the planet formation process: These objects typically feature wide gaps in the dust component, along with deficit of NIR emission corresponding to a lack of small grains in the inner regions, but simultaneously require a gas rich inner disk capable of sustaining high accretion rates, and a high content of pebble sized grains to explain the emission detected in the millimeter continuum. Massive planets of several Jupiter masses have been long proposed as an explanation for these objects. However, despite the efforts to find these giants, only one or two disks have confirmed detections of a planetary companion. We propose a new hybrid model that easily explain the properties of transition disks, by combining the contributions made by different research groups over the last decade in photoevaporation, dead zones, and dust trapping. In our model photoevaporation takes care of opening a cavity in the gas and dust component, while dead zones in the inner regions lead to long lived-inner disk, capable of sustaining the observed accretion rates during the photoevaporative dispersal process. Finally, dust trapped in moderate substructures (such as the ones caused by small Saturn mass planets) can explain the emissions found in the millimeter continuum, without imposing strong constrains on the planet location. With our model we show that instead of invoking massive fine-tuned planets to explain all the transition disk properties, the different processes that occur in protoplanetary disks complement each other and naturally reproduce the transition disk observations. Then, perhaps the reason of why we don't find more hidden massive planets is, simply, because they are not there.

Circumstellar disks do not evolve in isolation, as about half of solar-type stars were born in binary or multiple systems. Resolving disks in binary systems provides the opportunity to examine the influence of stellar companions on the outcomes of planet formation. We aim to investigate and compare disks in stellar multiple systems with near-infrared scattered-light imaging as part of the Disk Evolution Study Through Imaging of Nearby Young Stars (DESTINYS) program. We used polarimetric differential imaging with SPHERE/IRDIS at the VLT to search for scattered light from the circumstellar disks in three multiple systems, CHX 22, S CrA, and HP Cha. We performed astrometric and orbit analyses for the stellar companions using archival HST, VLT/NACO, and SPHERE data. Combined with the age and orbital constraints, the observed disk structures provide insights into the evolutionary history and the impact of the stellar companions. The small grains in CHX 22 form a tail-like structure surrounding the close binary, which likely results from a close encounter and capture of a cloudlet. S CrA shows intricate structures (tentative ringed and spiral features) in the circumprimary disk as a possible consequence of perturbations by companions. The circumsecondary disk is truncated and connected to the primary disk via a streamer, suggesting tidal interactions. In HP Cha, the primary disk is less disturbed and features a tenuous streamer, through which the material flows towards the companions. The comparison of the three systems spans a wide range of binary separation (50 - 500 au) and illustrates the decreasing influence on disk structures with the distance of companions. Se presenta el caso de un paciente masculino en la octava década de la vida, con antecedente de masa escrotal derecha de más de dos años de evolución, a quien se le realizan estudios histopatológicos, con hallazgo de mesotelioma testicular.

While protoplanetary disks are often treated as isolated systems in planet formation models, observations increasingly suggest that vigorous interactions between Class II disks and their environments are not rare. DO Tau is a T Tauri star that has previously been hypothesized to have undergone a close encounter with the HV Tau system. As part of the DESTINYS ESO Large Programme, we present new Very Large Telescope (VLT)/SPHERE polarimetric observations of DO Tau and combine them with archival Hubble Space Telescope (HST) scattered-light images and Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations of CO isotopologues and CS to map a network of complex structures. The SPHERE and ALMA observations show that the circumstellar disk is connected to arms extending out to several hundred astronomical units. HST and ALMA also reveal stream-like structures northeast of DO Tau, some of which are at least several thousand astronomical units long. These streams appear not to be gravitationally bound to DO Tau, and comparisons with previous Herschel far-IR observations suggest that the streams are part of a bridge-like structure connecting DO Tau and HV Tau. We also detect a fainter redshifted counterpart to a previously known blueshifted CO outflow. While some of DO Tau’s complex structures could be attributed to a recent disk–disk encounter, they might be explained alternatively by interactions with remnant material from the star formation process. These panchromatic observations of DO Tau highlight the need to contextualize the evolution of Class II disks by examining processes occurring over a wide range of size scales.

Over the last years, large (sub-)millimetre surveys of protoplanetary disks have well constrained the demographics of disks, such as their millimetre luminosities, spectral indices, and disk radii. Additionally, several high-resolution observations have revealed an abundance of substructures in the disks dust continuum. The most prominent are ring like structures, likely due to pressure bumps trapping dust particles. The origins and characteristics of these bumps, nevertheless, need to be further investigated. The purpose of this work is to study how dynamic pressure bumps affect observational properties of protoplanetary disks. We further aim to differentiate between the planetary- versus zonal flow-origin of pressure bumps. We perform one-dimensional gas and dust evolution simulations, setting up models with varying pressure bump features. We subsequently run radiative transfer calculations to obtain synthetic images and the different quantities of observations. We find that the outermost pressure bump determines the disks dust size across different millimetre wavelengths. Our modelled dust traps need to form early (< 0.1 Myr), fast (on viscous timescales), and must be long lived (> Myr) to obtain the observed high millimetre luminosities and low spectral indices of disks. While the planetary bump models can reproduce these observables irrespectively of the opacity prescription, the highest opacities are needed for the zonal flow bump model to be in line with observations. Our findings favour the planetary- over the zonal flow-origin of pressure bumps and support the idea that planet formation already occurs in early class 0-1 stages of circumstellar disks. The determination of the disks effective size through its outermost pressure bump also delivers a possible answer to why disks in recent low-resolution surveys appear to have the same sizes across different millimetre wavelengths., 22 pages, 15 figures. Observations of young stars hosting transition disks show that several of them have high accretion rates, despite their disks presenting extended cavities in their dust component. This represents a challenge for theoretical models, which struggle to reproduce both features. We explore if a disk evolution model, including a dead zone and disk dispersal by X-ray photoevaporation, can explain the high accretion rates and large gaps (or cavities) measured in transition disks. We implement a dead zone turbulence profile and a photoevaporative mass loss profile into numerical simulations of gas and dust. We perform a population synthesis study of the gas component, and obtain synthetic images and SED of the dust component through radiative transfer calculations. This model results in long lived inner disks and fast dispersing outer disks, that can reproduce both the accretion rates and gap sizes observed in transition disks. For a dead zone of turbulence $\alpha_{dz} = 10^{-4}$ and extent $r_{dz}$ = 10 AU, our population synthesis study shows that $63\%$ of our transition disks are accreting with $\dot{M}_g > 10^{-11} M_\odot/yr$ after opening a gap. Among those accreting transition disks, half display accretion rates higher than $5\times10^{-10} M_\odot/yr$ . The dust component in these disks is distributed in two regions: in a compact inner disk inside the dead zone, and in a ring at the outer edge of the photoevaporative gap, which can be located between 20 AU and 100 AU. Our radiative transfer calculations show that the disk displays an inner disk and an outer ring in the millimeter continuum, a feature observed in some transition disks. A disk model considering X-ray photoevaporative dispersal in combination with dead zones can explain several of the observed properties in transition disks including: the high accretion rates, the large gaps, and long-lived inner disks at mm-emission., Comment: 16 pages, 15 figures. The mass of protoplanetary disks is arguably one of their most important quantities shaping their evolution toward planetary systems, but it remains a challenge to determine this quantity. Using the high spatial resolution now available on telescopes such as the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), recent studies derived a relation between the disk surface density and the location of the "dust lines". This is a new concept in the field, linking the disk size at different continuum wavelengths with the radial distribution of grain populations of different sizes. We aim to use a dust evolution model to test the dependence of the dust line location on disk gas mass. In particular, we are interested in the reliability of the method for disks showing radial substructures, as recent high-resolution observations revealed. Our models show that the determination of the dust line location is a promising approach to the mass estimate of protoplanetay disks, but the exact relation between the dust line location and disk mass depends on the structure of the particular disk. We calibrated the relation for disks without evidence of radial structures, while for more complex structures we ran a simple dust evolution model. However, this method fails when there is evidence of strong dust traps. PDS70 is a unique system in which two protoplanets, PDS70b and c, have been discovered within the dust-depleted cavity of their disk, at $\sim$22 and 34au respectively, by direct imaging at infrared wavelengths. Subsequent detection of the planets in the H$\alpha$ line indicates that they are still accreting material through circumplanetary disks. In this Letter, we present new Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations of the dust continuum emission at 855$\mu$m at high angular resolution ($\sim$20mas, 2.3au) that aim to resolve the circumplanetary disks and constrain their dust masses. Our observations confirm the presence of a compact source of emission co-located with PDS70c, spatially separated from the circumstellar disk and less extended than $\sim$1.2au in radius, a value close to the expected truncation radius of the cicumplanetary disk at a third of the Hill radius. The emission around PDS70c has a peak intensity of $\sim$86$\pm$16 $\mu \mathrm{Jy}~\mathrm{beam}^{-1}$ which corresponds to a dust mass of $\sim$0.031M$_{\oplus}$ or $\sim$0.007M$_{\oplus}$, assuming that it is only constituted of 1 $\mu$m or 1 mm sized grains, respectively. We also detect extended, low surface brightness continuum emission within the cavity near PDS70b. We observe an optically thin inner disk within 18au of the star with an emission that could result from small micron-sized grains transported from the outer disk through the orbits of b and c. In addition, we find that the outer disk resolves into a narrow and bright ring with a faint inner shoulder., Comment: ApJ Letters, in press; 19 pages, 9 figures

e18721 Background: In our experience during the first year of development of ACHOC-C19 study, we observed 26% mortality in patients with cancer and COVID 19 infection. The impact of vaccination was not evaluated prior to the implementation of this strategy worldwide in this kind of population. It was proposed to evaluate the effectiveness of immunization during the second phase of our investigation. Methods: Cohort study derived from the National Registry of Patients with Cancer and COVID-19 (ACHOCC-19). Data were collected from June 2021 since vaccine was available. Patients were: older than 18 years, diagnosed with cancer (solid tumors), treated and/or under follow-up, and with COVID-19 infection. The comparative analysis of the vaccinated and non-vaccinated cohort is presented. Outcomes included: all-cause mortality within 30 days of infection diagnosis, hospitalization, and mechanical ventilation. Effect estimation was performed through relative risk (RR) and multivariate analysis for each event, using generalized linear models of the binomial family. Results: 896 patients were included, 470 were older than 60 years (52.4%) and 59% women (n = 530). 172 patients were recruited in the vaccinated cohort and 724 in the non-vaccinated cohort (ratio: 1 to 4.2). The cumulative incidence of hospitalization among the unvaccinated was 42.4% (n = 307), and among the vaccinated, 29% (n = 50); invasive mechanical ventilation requirement was 8.4% (n = 61) in unvaccinated, and 4.6% (n = 8) in vaccinated. The cumulative incidence of mortality from all causes in the unvaccinated was 17% (n = 123) and in the vaccinated 4.65% (n = 8). Table summarizes the multivariate analysis. The adjusted RR for mortality for the unvaccinated is 3.4 (95% CI: 1.7-6.8), for hospitalization 1.36 (95% CI: 1.08-1.72), and for mechanical ventilation 2.1 (95% CI: 1.02-4.2). Conclusions: The incidence of complications and death in patients with cancer and COVID-19 infection is significantly higher in those who have not received a vaccination schedule compared to those who have been vaccinated. Immunization should be promoted and intensified in this population group.[Table: see text]

Context. The discovery of giant planets orbiting very low mass stars (VLMS) and the recent observed substructures in disks around VLMS is challenging planet formation models. Specifically, radial drift of dust particles is a catastrophic barrier in these disks, which prevents the formation of planetesimals and therefore planets. Aims. We aim to estimate if structures, such as cavities, rings, and gaps, are common in disks around VLMS and to test models of structure formation in these disks. We also aim to compare the radial extent of the gas and dust emission in disks around VLMS, which can give us insight about radial drift. Methods. We studied six disks around VLMS in the Taurus star-forming region using ALMA Band 7 (~340 GHz) at a resolution of ~0.1″. The targets were selected because of their high disk dust content in their stellar mass regime. Results. Our observations resolve the disk dust continuum in all disks. In addition, we detect the 12CO (J = 3−2) emission line in all targets and 13CO (J = 3−2) in five of the six sources. The angular resolution allows the detection of dust substructures in three out of the six disks, which we studied by using UV-modeling. Central cavities are observed in the disks around stars MHO 6 (M 5.0) and CIDA 1 (M 4.5), while we have a tentative detection of a multi-ringed disk around J0433. We estimate that a planet mass of ~0.1 MJup or ~0.4 MSaturn is required for a single planet to create the first gap in J0433. For the cavities of MHO 6 and CIDA 1, a Saturn-mass planet (~0.3 MJup) is required. The other three disks with no observed structures are the most compact and faintest in our sample, with the radius enclosing 90% of the continuum emission varying between ~13 and 21 au. The emission of 12CO and 13CO is more extended than the dust continuum emission in all disks of our sample. When using the 12CO emission to determine the gas disk extension Rgas, the ratio of Rgas∕Rdust in our sample varies from 2.3 to 6.0. One of the disks in our sample, CIDA 7, has the largest Rgas∕Rdust ratio observed so far, which is consistent with models of radial drift being very efficient around VLMS in the absence of substructures. Conclusions. Given our limited angular resolution, substructures were only directly detected in the most extended disks, which represent 50% of our sample, and there are hints of unresolved structured emission in one of the bright smooth sources. Our observations do not exclude giant planet formation on the substructures observed. A comparison of the size and luminosity of VLMS disks with their counterparts around higher mass stars shows that they follow a similar relation.

We present a synergic study of protoplanetary disks to investigate links between inner disk gas molecules and the large-scale migration of solid pebbles. The sample includes 63 disks where two types of measurements are available: i) spatially-resolved disk images revealing the radial distribution of disk pebbles (mm-cm dust grains), from millimeter observations with ALMA or the SMA, and ii) infrared molecular emission spectra as observed with Spitzer. The line flux ratios of H2O with HCN, C2H2, and CO2 all anti-correlate with the dust disk radius R$_{dust}$, expanding previous results found by Najita et al. (2013) for HCN/H2O and the dust disk mass. By normalization with the dependence on accretion luminosity common to all molecules, only the H2O luminosity maintains a detectable anti-correlation with disk radius, suggesting that the strongest underlying relation is between H2O and R$_{dust}$. If R$_{dust}$ is set by large-scale pebble drift, and if molecular luminosities trace the elemental budgets of inner disk warm gas, these results can be naturally explained with scenarios where the inner disk chemistry is fed by sublimation of oxygen-rich icy pebbles migrating inward from the outer disk. Anti-correlations are also detected between all molecular luminosities and the infrared index n$_{13-30}$, which is sensitive to the presence and size of an inner disk dust cavity. Overall, these relations suggest a physical interconnection between dust and gas evolution both locally and across disk scales. We discuss fundamental predictions to test this interpretation and study the interplay between pebble drift, inner disk depletion, and the chemistry of planet-forming material., Accepted for publication on ApJ

We present new Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations for three protoplanetary disks in Taurus at 2.9\,mm and comparisons with previous 1.3\,mm data both at an angular resolution of $\sim0.''1$ (15\,au for the distance of Taurus). In the single-ring disk DS Tau, double-ring disk GO Tau, and multiple-ring disk DL Tau, the same rings are detected at both wavelengths, with radial locations spanning from 50 to 120\,au. To quantify the dust emission morphology, the observed visibilities are modeled with a parametric prescription for the radial intensity profile. The disk outer radii, taken as 95\% of the total flux encircled in the model intensity profiles, are consistent at both wavelengths for the three disks. Dust evolution models show that dust trapping in local pressure maxima in the outer disk could explain the observed patterns. Dust rings are mostly unresolved. The marginally resolved ring in DS Tau shows a tentatively narrower ring at the longer wavelength, an observational feature expected from efficient dust trapping. The spectral index ($\alpha_{\rm mm}$) increases outward and exhibits local minima that correspond to the peaks of dust rings, indicative of the changes in grain properties across the disks. The low optical depths ($\tau\sim$0.1--0.2 at 2.9\,mm and 0.2--0.4 at 1.3\,mm) in the dust rings suggest that grains in the rings may have grown to millimeter sizes. The ubiquitous dust rings in protoplanetary disks modify the overall dynamics and evolution of dust grains, likely paving the way towards the new generation of planet formation., Comment: accepted for publication in ApJ

[abridged] Recent laboratory experiments indicate that destructive collisions of icy dust particles occur with much lower velocities than previously thought. When these new velocities are considered from laboratory experiments in dust evolution models, a growth to pebble sizes in protoplanetary disks (PPDs) is difficult. This may contradict (sub-)mm observations and challenge the formation of planetesimals and planets. We investigate the conditions that are required in dust evolution models for growing and trapping pebbles in PPDs when the fragmentation speed is 1ms$^{-1}$ in the entire disk. We distinguish the parameters controlling the effects of turbulent velocities, vertical stirring, radial diffusion, and gas viscous evolution, always assuming that particles cannot diffuse faster (radially or vertically) than the gas. To form pebbles and produce effective particle trapping, the parameter that controls the particle turbulent velocities must be small ($\delta_t\lesssim10^{-4}$). In these cases, the vertical settling can limit the formation of pebbles, which also prevents particle trapping. Therefore the parameter that sets the vertical settling of the grains must be $\delta_z, Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

New ALMA observations of protoplanetary disks allow us to probe planet formation in other systems, giving us new constraints on planet formation processes. Meanwhile, studies of our own Solar System rely on constraints derived in a completely different way. However, it is still unclear what features the Solar System's disk could have produced during its gas phase. By running 2D isothermal hydro-simulations and a dust evolution model, we derive synthetic images at 1.3 mm wavelength using the radiative transfer code RADMC3D. We find that the embedded multiple giant planets strongly perturb the radial gas velocities of the disk, creating traffic jams in the dust. They produce over-densities different from the ones created by pressure traps and located away from the planets' positions in the disk. By deriving the images at 1.3mm from these dust distributions, we show that the traffic jams, observable with a high resolution, further blur the link between the number of gaps and rings in disks and the number of embedded planets. We additionally show that a system of 3 compact giant planets does not automatically produce bright outer rings at large radii in the disk. This means that high resolution observations of disks of various sizes are needed to distinguish between different giant planet formation scenarios during the disk phase, where the giants form either in the outer regions of the disks or in the inner regions. Finally, we find that, even when the dust temperature is determined self-consistently, the dust masses derived observationally might be off by up to a factor of ten compared to the dust contained in our simulations due to the creation of optically thick regions. [abridged] We present a 1+1D global magnetically-driven disk accretion model that captures the essence of the MRI-driven accretion, without resorting to 3D global non-ideal MHD simulations. The gas dynamics is assumed to be solely controlled by the MRI and hydrodynamic instabilities. For given stellar and disk parameters, the Shakura-Sunyaev viscosity parameter $\alpha$ is determined self-consistently under the framework of viscously-driven accretion from detailed considerations of the MRI with non-ideal MHD effects (Ohmic resistivity and ambipolar diffusion), accounting for disk heating by stellar irradiation, non-thermal sources of ionization, and dust effects on the ionization chemistry. Additionally, the magnetic field strength is constrained and adopted to maximize the MRI activity. We demonstrate the use of our framework by investigating steady-state MRI-driven accretion in a fiducial protoplanetary disk model around a solar-type star. We find that the equilibrium solution displays no pressure maximum at the dead zone outer edge, except if a sufficient amount of dust particles have accumulated there before the disk reaches a steady-state accretion regime. Furthermore, the steady-state accretion solution describes a disk that displays a spatially extended long-lived inner disk gas reservoir (the dead zone) accreting a few $10^{-9}\, M_{\odot}.\rm{yr}^{-1}$. By conducting a detailed parameter study, we find that the extend to which the MRI can drive efficient accretion is primarily determined by the total disk gas mass, the representative grain size, the vertically-integrated dust-to-gas mass ratio, and the stellar X-ray luminosity. A self-consistent time-dependent coupling between gas, dust, stellar evolution models and our general framework on million-year timescales is required to fully understand the formation of dead zones and their potential to trap dust particles., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

Millimeter continuum imaging of protoplanetary disks reveals the distribution of solid particles and the presence of substructures (gaps and rings) beyond 5-10 au, while infrared (IR) spectra provide access to abundances of gaseous species at smaller disk radii. Building on recent observational findings of an anti-correlation between the inner disk water luminosity and outer dust disk radius, we aim here at investigating the dynamics of icy solids that drift from the outer disk and sublimate their ice inside the snow line, enriching the water vapor that is observed in the IR. We use a volatile-inclusive disk evolution model to explore a range of conditions (gap location, particle size, disk mass, and alpha-viscosity) under which gaps in the outer disk efficiently block the inward drift of icy solids. We find that inner-disk vapor enrichment is highly sensitive to the location of a disk gap, yielding for each particle size a radial "sweet spot" that reduces the inner-disk vapor enrichment to a minimum. For pebbles of 1-10 mm in size, which carry the most mass, this sweet spot is at 7-15 au, suggesting that inner gaps may have a key role in reducing ice delivery to the inner disk and may not allow the formation of Earths and super-Earths. This highlights the importance of observationally determining the presence and properties of inner gaps in disks. We present a high-resolution ($\sim0.''12$, $\sim16$ au, mean sensitivity of $50~\mu$Jy~beam$^{-1}$ at 225 GHz) snapshot survey of 32 protoplanetary disks around young stars with spectral type earlier than M3 in the Taurus star-forming region using Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA). This sample includes most mid-infrared excess members that were not previously imaged at high spatial resolution, excluding close binaries and highly extincted objects, thereby providing a more representative look at disk properties at 1--2 Myr. Our 1.3 mm continuum maps reveal 12 disks with prominent dust gaps and rings, 2 of which are around primary stars in wide binaries, and 20 disks with no resolved features at the observed resolution (hereafter smooth disks), 8 of which are around the primary star in wide binaries. The smooth disks were classified based on their lack of resolved substructures, but their most prominent property is that they are all compact with small effective emission radii ($R_{\rm eff,95\%} \lesssim 50$ au). In contrast, all disks with $R_{\rm eff,95\%}$ of at least 55 au in our sample show detectable substructures. Nevertheless, their inner emission cores (inside the resolved gaps) have similar peak brightness, power law profiles, and transition radii to the compact smooth disks, so the primary difference between these two categories is the lack of outer substructures in the latter. These compact disks may lose their outer disk through fast radial drift without dust trapping, or they might be born with small sizes. The compact dust disks, as well as the inner disk cores of extended ring disks, that look smooth at the current resolution will likely show small-scale or low-contrast substructures at higher resolution. Gap-like structures in protoplanetary disks are likely related to planet formation processes. In this paper, we present and analyze high resolution (0.17*0.11 arcsec) 1.3 mm ALMA continuum observations of the protoplanetary disk around the Herbig Ae star MWC 480. Our observations for the first time show a gap centered at ~74au with a width of ~23au, surrounded by a bright ring centered at ~98au from the central star. Detailed radiative transfer modeling of both the ALMA image and the broadband spectral energy distribution is used to constrain the surface density profile and structural parameters of the disk. If the width of the gap corresponds to 4~8 times the Hill radius of a single forming planet, then the putative planet would have a mass of 0.4~3 M_Jup. We test this prediction by performing global three-dimensional smoothed particle hydrodynamic gas/dust simulations of disks hosting a migrating and accreting planet. We find that the dust emission across the disk is consistent with the presence of an embedded planet with a mass of ~2.3 M_Jup at an orbital radius of ~78au. Given the surface density of the best-fit radiative transfer model, the amount of depleted mass in the gap is higher than the mass of the putative planet, which satisfies the basic condition for the formation of such a planet., Accepted for publication in A&A, 11 pages, 8 figures

Even though the first observational evidence of the existence of isolated substellar objects dates from 1995, the heated debates surrounding these objects have not ceased. With masses below $\sim$0.072M$_{\odot}$ (and hence unable to sustain stable H burning, brown dwarfs, BDs) or even $\le$13 M$_{\rm Jup}$ (and hence unable to sustain stable deuterium burning, isolated planetary mass objects, IPMOS), a number of theoretical conundrums have yet to be solved. From the dominant mechanism of formation, to the observational evidence that grain growth can occur during the first million years in the disks surrounding these extremely low-mass objects. In this work we present further analysis on the first detection in the millimeter range of the disk around OTS44 (one of the closest young IPMOS). This detection, possible thanks to the exquisite sensitivity of ALMA, allows us to conclude than grain growth has taken place in OTS44's disk and to further investigate the disk's properties via complete SED modeling.

We report new Atacama Large Millimeter/sub-millimeter Array (ALMA) Band 3 observations at 2.75 mm of the TD around SR 24S with an angular resolution of $\sim$0.11''$\times$ 0.09'' and a peak signal-to-noise ratio of $\sim24$. We detect an inner disk and a mostly symmetric ring-like structure that peaks at $\sim$0.32'', that is $\sim$37 au at a distance of $\sim$114.4 pc. The full width at half maximum of this ring is $\sim$28 au. We analyze the observed structures by fitting the dust continuum visibilities using different models for the intensity profile, and compare with previous ALMA observations of the same disk at 0.45 mm and 1.30 mm. We qualitatively compare the results of these fits with theoretical predictions of different scenarios for the formation of a cavity or large gap. The comparison of the dust continuum structure between different ALMA bands indicates that photoevaporation and dead zone can be excluded as leading mechanisms for the cavity formation in SR 24S disk, leaving the planet scenario (single or multiple planets) as the most plausible mechanism. We compared the 2.75 mm emission with published (sub-)centimeter data and find that the inner disk is likely tracing dust thermal emission. This implies that any companion in the system should allow dust to move inwards throughout the gap and replenish the inner disk. In the case of one single planet, this puts strong constraints on the mass of the potential planet inside the cavity and the disk viscosity of about $\lesssim$5 $M_{\rm{Jup}}$ and $\alpha\sim10^{-4}-10^{-3}$, respectively., Comment: Accepted to ApJ

ALMA has observed a plethora of ring-like structures in planet forming discs at distances of 10-100 au from their host star. Although several mechanisms have been invoked to explain the origin of such rings, a common explanation is that they trace new-born planets. Under the planetary hypothesis, a natural question is how to reconcile the apparently high frequency of gap-carving planets at 10-100 au with the paucity of Jupiter mass planets observed around main sequence stars at those separations. Here, we provide an analysis of the new-born planet population emerging from observations of gaps in discs, under the assumption that the observed gaps are due to planets. We use a simple estimate of the planet mass based on the gap morphology, and apply it to a sample of gaps recently obtained by us in a survey of Taurus with ALMA. We also include additional data from recent published surveys, thus analysing the largest gap sample to date, for a total of 48 gaps. The properties of the purported planets occupy a distinctively different region of parameter space with respect to the known exo-planet population, currently not accessible through planet finding methods. Thus, no discrepancy in the mass and radius distribution of the two populations can be claimed at this stage. We show that the mass of the inferred planets conforms to the theoretically expected trend for the minimum planet mass needed to carve a dust gap. Finally, we estimate the separation and mass of the putative planets after accounting for migration and accretion, for a range of evolutionary times, finding a good match with the distribution of cold Jupiters., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, re-submitted to MNRAS after referee's comments

We utilize ALMA archival data to estimate the dust disk size of 152 protoplanetary disks in Lupus (1-3 Myr), Chamaeleon I (2-3 Myr), and Upper-Sco (5-11 Myr). We combine our sample with 47 disks from Tau/Aur and Oph whose dust disk radii were estimated, as here, through fitting radial profile models to visibility data. We use these 199 homogeneously derived disk sizes to identify empirical disk-disk and disk-host property relations as well as to search for evolutionary trends. In agreement with previous studies, we find that dust disk sizes and millimeter luminosities are correlated, but show for the first time that the relationship is not universal between regions. We find that disks in the 2-3 Myr-old Cha I are not smaller than disks in other regions of similar age, and confirm the Barenfeld et al. (2017) finding that the 5-10 Myr USco disks are smaller than disks belonging to younger regions. Finally, we find that the outer edge of the Solar System, as defined by the Kuiper Belt, is consistent with a population of dust disk sizes which have not experienced significant truncation., Comment: ApJ accepted, 38 pages, 16 figures, 68k compatible

Spiral arms, rings and large scale asymmetries are structures observed in high resolution observations of protoplanetary disks, and it appears that some of the disks showing spiral arms in scattered light also show asymmetries in millimeter-sized dust. HD~135344B is one of these disks. Planets are invoked as the origin of these structures, but no planet has been observed so far. We investigate the nature of the asymmetric structure in the HD~135344B disk in order to understand the origin of the spirals and of the asymmetry seen in this disk. Ultimately, we aim at understanding whether or not one or more planets are needed to explain such structures. We present new ALMA sub-0.1" resolution observations in Band 3 and 4. The high spatial resolution allows us to characterize the mm-dust morphology of the disk. The low optical depth of continuum emission probes the bulk of the dust in vortex. Moreover, we combine the new observations with archival data to perform a multi-wavelength analysis and to obtain information about the dust distribution and properties inside the asymmetry. We resolve the asymmetric disk into a symmetric ring + asymmetric crescent, and observe that: (1) the spectral index strongly decreases at the center of the vortex, consistent with the presence of large grains; (2) for the first time, an azimuthal shift of the peak of the vortex with wavelength is observed; (3) the azimuthal width of the vortex decreases at longer wavelengths, as expected for dust traps. These features allow to confirm the nature of the asymmetry as a vortex. Finally a lower limit to the total mass of the vortex is $0.3 M_{\rm Jupiter}$. Considering the uncertainties involved in this estimate, it is possible that the actual mass of the vortex is higher and possibly within the required values ($\sim 4\,\rm M_{\rm Jupiter}$) to launch spiral arms similar to those observed in scattered light., Comment: 14 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication on A&A. We analyze the dust morphology of 29 transition disks (TDs) observed with ALMA at (sub-) millimeter-emission. We perform the analysis in the visibility plane to characterize the total flux, cavity size, and shape of the ring-like structure. First, we found that the $M_{\rm{dust}}-M_\star$ relation is much flatter for TDs than the observed trends from samples of class II sources in different star forming regions. This relation demonstrates that cavities open in high (dust) mass disks, independent of the stellar mass. The flatness of this relation contradicts the idea that TDs are a more evolved set of disks. Two potential reasons (not mutually exclusive) may explain this flat relation: the emission is optically thick or/and millimeter-sized particles are trapped in a pressure bump. Second, we discuss our results of the cavity size and ring width in the context of different physical processes for cavity formation. Photoevaporation is an unlikely leading mechanism for the origin of the cavity of any of the targets in the sample. Embedded giant planets or dead zones remain as potential explanations. Although both models predict correlations between the cavity size and the ring shape for different stellar and disk properties, we demonstrate that with the current resolution of the observations, it is difficult to obtain these correlations. Future observations with higher angular resolution observations of TDs with ALMA will help to discern between different potential origins of cavities in TDs., Comment: Minor changes after language edition. We present observations of the Herbig Ae star HD169142 with VLT/SPHERE instruments InfraRed Dual-band Imager and Spectrograph (IRDIS) ($K1K2$ and $H2H3$ bands) and the Integral Field Spectrograph (IFS) ($Y$, $J$ and $H$ bands). We detect several bright blobs at $\sim$180 mas separation from the star, and a faint arc-like structure in the IFS data. Our reference differential imaging (RDI) data analysis also finds a bright ring at the same separation. We show, using a simulation based on polarized light data, that these blobs are actually part of the ring at 180 mas. These results demonstrate that the earlier detections of blobs in the $H$ and $K_S$ bands at these separations in Biller et al. as potential planet/substellar companions are actually tracing a bright ring with a Keplerian motion. Moreover, we detect in the images an additional bright structure at $\sim$93 mas separation and position angle of 355$^{\circ}$, at a location very close to previous detections. It appears point-like in the $YJ$ and $K$ bands but is more extended in the $H$ band. We also marginally detect an inner ring in the RDI data at $\sim$100 mas. Combining hydrodynamic planet-disk interaction simulations with dust evolution models, we show that protoplanetary disks having a giant planet can reveal diverse morphology in (sub-)millimeter continuum, including a full disk without significant radial structure, a transition disk with an inner cavity, a disk with a single gap and a central continuum peak, and a disk with multiple rings and gaps. Such a diversity originates from (1) the level of viscous transport in the disk which determines the number of gaps a planet can open; (2) the size and spatial distributions of grains determined by the coagulation, fragmentation, and radial drift, which in turn affects the emmisivity of the disk at (sub-)millimeter wavelengths; and (3) the angular resolution used to observe the disk. In particular, our results show that disks having the same underlying gas distribution can have very different grain size/spatial distributions and thus appearance in continuum, depending on the interplay among coagulation, fragmentation, and radial drift. This suggests that proper treatments for the grain growth have to be included in models of protoplanetary disks concerning continuum properties and that complementary molecular line observations are highly desired in addition to continuum observations to reveal the true nature of disks. The variety of observed protoplanetary disks in polarimetric light motivates a taxonomical study to constrain their evolution and establish the current framework of this type of observations. We classified 58 disks with available polarimetric observations into six major categories (Ring, Spiral, Giant, Rim, Faint, and Small disks) based on their appearance in scattered light. We re-calculated the stellar and disk properties from the newly available GAIA DR2 and related these properties with the disk categories. More than a half of our sample shows disk sub-structures. For the remaining sources, the absence of detected features is due to their faintness, to their small size, or to the disk geometry. Faint disks are typically found around young stars and typically host no cavity. There is a possible dichotomy in the near-IR excess of sources with spiral-disks (high) and ring-disks (low). Like spirals, shadows are associated with a high near-IR excess. If we account for the pre-main sequence evolutionary timescale of stars with different mass, spiral arms are likely associated to old disks. We also found a loose, shallow declining trend for the disk dust mass with time. Protoplanetary disks may form sub-structures like rings very early in their evolution but their detectability in scattered light is limited to relatively old sources (more than 5 Myr) where the recurrently detected disk cavities allow to illuminate the outer disk. The shallow decrease of disk mass with time might be due to a selection effect, where disks observed thus far in scattered light are typically massive, bright transition disks with longer lifetime than most disks. Potential signatures of proto-planets embedded in their natal protoplanetary disk are radial gaps or cavities in the continuum emission in the IR-mm wavelength range. ALMA observations are now probing spatially resolved rotational line emission of CO and other chemical species. These observations can provide complementary information on the mechanism carving the gaps in dust and additional constraints on the purported planet mass. We post-process 2D hydrodynamical simulations of planet-disk models, where the dust densities and grain size distributions are computed with a dust evolution code. The simulations explore different planet masses ($1\,M_{\rm J}\leq M_{\rm p}\leq15\,M_{\rm J}$) and turbulent parameters. The outputs are post-processed with the thermo-chemical code DALI, accounting for the radially and vertically varying dust properties as in Facchini et al. (2017). We obtain the gas and dust temperature structures, chemical abundances, and synthetic emission maps of both thermal continuum and CO rotational lines. This is the first study combining hydro simulations, dust evolution and chemistry to predict gas emission of disks hosting massive planets. All radial intensity profiles of the CO main isotopologues show a gap at the planet location. The ratio between the location of the gap as seen in CO and the peak in the mm continuum at the pressure maximum outside the orbit of the planet shows a clear dependence on planet mass. Due to the low dust density in the gaps, the dust and gas components can become thermally decoupled, with the gas being colder than the dust. The gaps seen in CO are due to a combination of gas temperature dropping at the location of the planet, and of the underlying surface density profile. Gap-opening planets can generate dust-trapping vortices that may explain some of the latest discoveries of high-contrast crescent-shaped dust asymmetries in transition discs. While planet-induced vortices were previously thought to have concentrated shapes, recent computational work has shown that these features naturally become much more elongated in the gas when simulations account for the relatively long timescale over which planets accrete their mass. In this work, we conduct two-fluid hydrodynamical simulations of vortices induced by slowly-growing Jupiter-mass planets in discs with very low viscosity ($\alpha = 3 \times 10^{-5}$). We simulate the dust dynamics for four particle sizes spanning 0.3 mm to 1 cm in order to produce synthetic ALMA images. In our simulations, we find that an elongated vortex still traps dust, but not directly at its center. With a flatter pressure bump and disruptions from the planet's overlapping spiral density waves, the dust instead circulates around the vortex. This motion (1) typically carries the peak off-center, (2) spreads the dust out over a wider azimuthal extent $\geq 180^{\circ}$, (3) skews the azimuthal profile towards the front of the vortex, and (4) can also create double peaks in newly-formed vortices. In particular, we expect that the most defining observational signature, a peak offset of more than $30^{\circ}$, should be detectable $>30\%$ of the time in observations with a beam diameter of at most the planet's separation from its star., Comment: Accepted to MNRAS. 13 pages, 8 figures. While planet formation is thought to occur early in the history of a protoplanetary disk, the presence of planets embedded in disks, or of other processes driving disk evolution, might be traced from their imprints on the disk structure. We observed the T Tauri star HD 143006, located in the 5-11 Myr-old Upper Sco region, in polarized scattered light with VLT/SPHERE at near-infrared wavelengths, reaching an angular resolution of ~0.037" (~6 au). We obtained two datasets, one with a 145 mas diameter coronagraph, and the other without, enabling us to probe the disk structure down to an angular separation of ~0.06" (~10 au). In our observations, the disk of HD 143006 is clearly resolved up to ~0.5" and shows a clear large-scale asymmetry with the eastern side brighter than the western side. We detect a number of additional features, including two gaps and a ring. The ring shows an overbrightness at a position angle (PA) of ~140 deg, extending over a range in position angle of ~60 deg, and two narrow dark regions. The two narrow dark lanes and the overall large-scale asymmetry are indicative of shadowing effects, likely due to a misaligned inner disk. We demonstrate the remarkable resemblance between the scattered light image of HD 143006 and a model prediction of a warped disk due to an inclined binary companion. The warped disk model, based on the hydrodynamic simulations combined with 3D radiative transfer calculations, reproduces all major morphological features. However, it does not account for the observed overbrightness at PA~140 deg. Shadows have been detected in several protoplanetary disks, suggesting that misalignment in disks is not uncommon. However, the origin of the misalignment is not clear.
