Abstract

The unbound proton-rich nuclei $^{16}$F and $^{15}$F are investigated experimentally and theoretically. Several experiments using the resonant elastic scattering method were performed at GANIL with radioactive beams to determine the properties of the low lying states of these nuclei. Strong asymmetry between $^{16}$F-$^{16}$N and $^{15}$F-$^{15}$C mirror nuclei is observed. The strength of the $nucleon-nucleon$ effective interaction involving the loosely bound proton in the $s_{1/2}$ orbit is significantly modified with respect to their mirror nuclei $^{16}$N and $^{15}$C. The reduction of the effective interaction is estimated by calculating the interaction energies with a schematic zero-range force. It is found that, after correcting for the effects due to changes in the radial distribution of the single-particle wave functions, the mirror symmetry of the $n-p$ interaction is preserved between $^{16}$F and $^{16}$N, while a difference of 63\% is measured between the $p-p$ versus $n-n$ interactions in the second excited state of $^{15}$F and $^{15}$C nuclei. Several explanations are proposed.

Abstract

Intense and purified radioactive beam of post-accelerated $^{14}$O was used to study the low-lying states in the unbound $^{15}$F nucleus. Exploiting resonant elastic scattering in inverse kinematics with a thick target, the second excited state, a resonance at E$\_R$=4.757(6)(10)~MeV with a width of $\Gamma$=36(5)(14)~keV was measured for the first time with high precision. The structure of this narrow above-barrier state in a nucleus located two neutrons beyond the proton drip line was investigated using the Gamow Shell Model in the coupled channel representation with a $^{12}$C core and three valence protons. Abstract

Radioactive beams of $^{14}$O and $^{15}$O were used to populate the resonant states 1/2$^+$, 5/2$^+$ and $0^-,1^-,2^-$ in the unbound $^{15}$F and $^{16}$F nuclei respectively by means of proton elastic scattering reactions in inverse kinematics. Based on their large proton spectroscopic factor values, the resonant states in $^{16}$F can be viewed as a core of $^{14}$O plus a proton in the 2s$_{1/2}$ or 1d$_{5/2}$ shell and a neutron in 1p$_{1/2}$. Experimental energies were used to derive the strength of the 2s$_{1/2}$-1p$_{1/2}$ and 1d$_{5/2}$-1p$_{1/2}$ proton-neutron interactions. It is found that the former changes by 40% compared with the mirror nucleus $^{16}$N, and the second by 10%. This apparent symmetry breaking of the nuclear force between mirror nuclei finds explanation in the role of the large coupling to the continuum for the states built on an $\ell=0$ proton configuration., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication as a regular article in Physical Review C

Abstract

This document describes the technical layout and the expected performance of the Straw Tube Tracker (STT), the main tracking detector of the PANDA target spectrometer. The STT encloses a Micro-Vertex-Detector (MVD) for the inner tracking and is followed in beam direction by a set of GEM-stations. The tasks of the STT are the measurement of the particle momentum from the reconstructed trajectory and the measurement of the specific energy-loss for a particle identification. Dedicated simulations with full analysis studies of certain proton-antiproton reactions, identified as being benchmark tests for the whole PANDA scientific program, have been performed to test the STT layout and performance. Abstract

We report here the first direct lifetime measurement of the 2+1 state in 72,74Zn. The neutron-rich beam was produced by in-flight fragmentation of 76Ge at the Grand Acc\'el\'erateur National d'Ions Lourds and separated with the LISE spectrometer. The 2+1 state was excited by inelastic scattering and knock-out reaction on a CD2 target and its lifetime was measured by the recoil-distance Dopplershift method with the K\"oln plunger device combined with the EXOGAM detectors. The lifetimes of the 2+1 states in 72,74Zn were determined to be 17.9(18) and 27.0(24) ps, which correspond to reduced transition probabilities B(E2; 2+1 \rightarrow 0+) = 385(39) and 370(33) e2fm4, respectively. These values support the idea of a systematic maximum of collectivity at N = 42 for Zn, Ge and Se nuclei. In addition, the available systematics in the neighboring nuclei point towards a transition from a spherical oscillator at N = 40 to complete {\gamma}-softness at N = 42., Comment: 10 pages, 13 figures; accepted for publication in Phys. Abstract

We propose the sequential reaction process $^{15}$O($p$,$\gamma)(\beta^{+}$)$^{16}$O as a new pathway to bypass of the $^{15}$O waiting point. This exotic reaction is found to have a surprisingly high cross section, approximately 10$^{10}$ times higher than the $^{15}$O($p$,$\beta^{+}$)$^{16}$O. These cross sections were calculated after precise measurements of energies and widths of the proton-unbound $^{16}$F low lying states, obtained using the H($^{15}$O,p)$^{15}$O reaction. The large $(p,\gamma)(\beta^{+})$ cross section can be understood to arise from the more efficient feeding of the low energy wing of the ground state resonance by the gamma decay. The implications of the new reaction in novae explosions and X-ray bursts are discussed., Comment: submitted

Abstract

The unbound proton-rich nuclei 16F and 15F are investigated experimentally and theoretically. Several experiments using the resonant elastic scattering method were performed at GANIL with radioactive beams to determine the properties of the low lying states of these nuclei. Strong asymmetry between 16F–16N and 15F–15C mirror nuclei is observed. The strength of the nucleon- nucleon effective interaction involving the loosely bound proton in the s1 / 2 orbit is significantly modified with respect to their mirror nuclei 16N and 15C. The reduction of the effective interaction is estimated by calculating the interaction energies with a schematic zero-range force. It is found that, after correcting for the effects due to changes in the radial distribution of the single-particle wave functions, the mirror symmetry of the n- p interaction is preserved between 16F and 16N, while a difference of 63% is measured between the p- p versus n- n interactions in the second excited state of 15F and 15C nuclei. 33rd European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference and Exhibition; 124-127, Gallium antimonide (GaSb) is an III-V semiconducting compound with a distinct lattice and band gap energy structure, enabling innovative application in optoelectronic devices. As substrate material in device technology, it allows operation on a wide spectral range i.e. 0.8÷ 4.3μm. Consequently, GaSb is an important competitor for solar energy conversion e.g. high efficiency thermo-photovoltaic (TPV) cells. Nowadays, GaSb technology is devoted to the development of high quality single crystals, efficient surface passivation techniques or competitive design of active p-n junction. The present work is dedicated to the study of Si+ ion implantation in n-GaSb, with the aim of defining an active p-n junction at a precise level of local doping. The n-GaSb substrates were chemically prepared by cleaning and selective etching, and afterwards were exposed to Si+ at E=1 MeV. The technological procedure included a recovery treatment and for defining the device structure, the metals were vacuum deposited in order to realize ohmic contacts i.e. PdGeAu/n-GaSb and Ag/p-GaSb. The characteristics of the sample in different technological stages were investigated by AFM analysis and selective XPS analysis together with electrical and optical measurements. The result of this experiment was the obtaining of photosensitive structure with a maximum photo-current response at 1.5μm.

Abstract

Combined PIXE and PIGE analysis was applied at the new Bucharest Tandetron to investigate biomineralization in two calcified tissues, deer antlers and femur bone. By annual loss and fast re-growth, antlers are a valuable model for bone as a dynamical system. Samples characterized by optical microscopy and histology were analyzed for P, Ca, F, Na, Mg, S, Cl, K, Zn, Sr by 3 MeV proton simultaneous PIXE and PIGE, using a hydroxyapatite standard and other reference materials. Good correlation between methods was found for P, and the concentrations were related to biological data. Antlers showed lower mineralization than femur, with the lowest values in the third antler beam. A power function of mineralization vs. >mineral age> of antlers was found. Thus combined PIXE and PIGE of antlers may bring highly relevant insights in biomineralization research.

Abstract

In this work we have systematically investigated the evolution of structure and stoichiometry in SrCuO2 films grown on TiO2-terminated SrTiO3 substrates as a function of the substrate temperature. Depending on the growth temperature SrCuO2/SrTiO3 films can exhibit either a pure tetragonal high-pressure phase, or a pure orthorhombic low-pressure phase, or a mixed phase. Our results indicate that at low substrate temperatures the non-equilibrium state of the growth process is responsible for the stabilization of the metastable tetragonal high-pressure structure in SrCuO2 thin films grown on (0 0 1) SrTiO3 substrates, whose lattice matches the metastable structure. In addition, at higher substrate temperatures thermodynamics become dominant over other factors and the SrCuO2 thin films are stabilized in the thermodynamically stable orthorhombic phase. © 2014 Elsevier B.V.
