Perinatal mental health is a major public health issue that arises during pregnancy and/or after birth, with substantial implications for social, parental, and maternal functioning, as well as overall quality of life. The study aimed to determine the prevalence of perinatal depression and its associated risk factors among women who visited a maternity hospital in Kathmandu, Nepal. A cross-sectional study was conducted at the Paropakar Maternity and Women's Hospital in Kathmandu. A total of 300 women in their perinatal period were interviewed. The Edinburgh Perinatal Depression Scale (EPDS) was used to measure perinatal depression. The Poisson regression model was used to determine risk factors associated with perinatal depression. The mean age of respondents was 25.5 (SD 4.5) years; average age during their first pregnancy was 23.5 (SD 3.7) years; and 53.7% of respondents were in the antenatal period. The prevalence of depressive symptoms (EPDS ≥ 10) was 40% (95% CI 31.4% to 45.8%). Unsupportive family members (adjusted prevalence ratio [aPR] 2.23; 95% CI 1.75–2.86), postnatal period (aPR 2.64; 95% CI 1.97–3.53), complications faced during delivery (aPR 1.76; 95%CI 1.30–2.39), history of intimate partner violence (aPR 0.48; 95% CI 0.36–0.64), and first pregnancy at the age of ≤25 years (aPR 0.61; 95% CI 0.42–0.88) were identified as key risk factors of perinatal depression. Strong family support and the active involvement of partners in counselling can contribute to alleviating perinatal depression symptoms. Targeted interventions in health and well-being services should be implemented to address mental health burden during both pregnancy and postpartum periods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

COVID-19 pandemic has triggered psychological stress such as anxiety and depression among people around the globe. Due to the nature of the job, healthcare professionals (HCPs) are at high risk of infection and are facing social stigma as well. This research was conducted with the objective to evaluate the psychological influence of the COVID-19 pandemic among HCPs in Yemen and the coping strategies adopted thereof. A web-based, as well as face-to-face cross-sectional study was carried out from July to December 2021 among HCPs of Yemen. The generalized anxiety disorder (GAD-7), patient health questionnaire (PHQ-9), and Brief-COPE scales were applied for the evaluation of anxiety, depression, and coping strategies. A total of 197 HCPs participated in the study where 28.4% and 43.1% had anxiety and depression respectively. The prevalence of both anxiety and depression in the majority were found of the minimal to none and mild categories (71.6% vs. 56.9% respectively). The respondents who had received training on COVID-19 had statistically significant lower GAD-7 scores than those who did not (6.32 vs. 8.02 respectively). A significant statistical difference was observed between physicians versus nurses regarding depression based on the working area (p < 0.05). The physician and pharmacist had a significant positive association with brief COPE scores at the 50th centile compared to other HCPs. The female respondents had statistically significant higher mean Brief COPE scores than male respondents (78.11 vs. 69.50 respectively). Our findings illustrate the requirement for efficient policies through administrative, clinical, and welfare perspectives from the regulatory body in preparedness and preventive measures towards such a pandemic that aids HCPs to provide service in a stress-free condition and assurance of a better healthcare system.. Malaria remains a substantial global health challenge, causing preventable illnesses and fatalities. In Nepal, the government has ambitiously targeted achieving malaria-free status by 2025. This study aims to assess the impact of women's roles on health-seeking behavior during suspected malaria fever in the high-risk area of Kanchanpur district, Nepal. This is a cross-sectional analytical design with a mixed-method approach, the research focused on Kanchanpur district, selected from 20 high-risk malaria districts of Nepal. Belauri Municipality within Kanchanpur, identified for its concentration of high and moderate-risk wards, was the specific study area. A random selection process identified 387 households for a comprehensive survey. Face-to-face interviews with household heads were conducted after obtaining written informed consent and ethical approval from the Nepal Health Research Council (March 3, 2023/Ref no.-2041). Data analysis, employing statistical measures such as percentages, frequency, mean, and the Chi-square test, was performed using SPSS version 20. Cultural beliefs regarding women's use of bed nets during menstruation significantly predicted health-seeking behavior (p-value < 0.05). Those endorsing bed net use during menstruation were nearly twice as likely to choose modern health facilities (COR = 1.975, 95% C.I. = 1.134 to 3.439, p = 0.016). Women's involvement in malaria treatment decisions strongly correlated with health-seeking behavior (p-value = 0.001). However, women participating in household decisions for suspected malaria treatment were less likely to choose modern health facilities (COR = 0.327, 95% CI = 0.171-0.627, p = 0.001) compared to those without such a role. The study underscores the complex influence of cultural beliefs and women's decision-making roles on health-seeking behavior. Introduction: More than 700, 000 people die due to suicide every year. Suicide is the fourth leading cause of death among 15-29 year-olds. A total of 77% of global suicides occur in low- and middle-income countries. There is an increasing number of suicide all over the world. There is limited data regarding this issue. The available data are based on police reports or on specific populations. The aim of this study was to find out the prevalence of suicidal attempts among psychiatry patients presented to the Department of Emergency of a tertiary care centre., Methods: A Descriptive cross-sectional study was done in a tertiary care centre from January 2019 to July 2020 after taking Ethical approval from the same institute. Beck Suicide Intent Scale, MINI-7, IPDE and PLESS were used to assess suicidal intent, psychiatric comorbidities, personality disorder and life stress event scores respectively. Bronfenbrenner's Social Ecological Model was used to access various stressors. Point estimate and 95% Confidence Interval were calculated., Results: The Prevalence of suicidal attempts among psychiatry patients in the emergency department was 265 (24.50%), (21.66-26.74, 95% Confidence Interval). The majority were females 135 (51%). The majority attempted at home 238 (89.81%). Background: Trauma, a major public health concern in remote highlands of Nepal, has led to considerable morbidity and mortality. The study elucidates the pattern and characteristics of trauma at the only tertiary care hospital in the Karnali province, Nepal., Materials and Methods: Case records of all injured patients who presented to the emergency department from January to December 2018 were analyzed for demographic data, types of injuries, body parts injured, the outcome of the treatment, and distribution of injuries with respect to age and sex., Results: A total of 460 injured patients (age: 26.5 ± 19.67 years, range: 0.5-84) were studied consisting of 282 (61.3%) males and 178 (38.7%) females, with a male-to-female ratio being 1.58:1 ( P = 0.001). Unintentional injuries were the predominant form of trauma ( n = 383, 84.1%), with fall ( n = 194, 42.2%), road traffic crashes (RTC) ( n = 161, 35%), and physical assaults ( n = 73, 15.9%) being the top three leading causes in order. Fall injury and RTC were most prevalent in children, accounting 12.8% (59) and 9.3% (43) of the total injuries, respectively. The physical assaults were predominant ( n = 23, 5%) in adults (20-29 years). Male patients significantly outnumbered females for all types of injuries. Soft tissue followed by head and extremities was the most common site of injuries., Conclusion: Trauma in Karnali is a predominantly early age male occurrence, with fall injury being the leading etiological factor, followed by injuries due to RTC and physical assaults. Soft tissue, head, and extremities were the major sites of injuries.
