Abstract

Particle physics has an ambitious and broad experimental programme for the coming decades. This programme requires large investments in detector hardware, either to build new facilities and experiments, or to upgrade existing ones. Similarly, it requires commensurate investment in the R&D of software to acquire, manage, process, and analyse the shear amounts of data to be recorded. In planning for the HL-LHC in particular, it is critical that all of the collaborating stakeholders agree on the software goals and priorities, and that the efforts complement each other. In this spirit, this white paper describes the R&D activities required to prepare for this software upgrade.

Abstract

This document describes the work done in T7.2 which is to support the community pilots from WP6, with their uptake of the available EOSC-Pillar resources/services and implementation of the (prototypical) science demonstrators. In parallel T7.2 coordinated for several services and resources: a) the integration with the Indigo-IAM, one of the federated EOSC-AAI solutions of the EOSC core implementation and b) the onboarding into EOSC catalogue and Marketplace. Thus, enabling access to distributed applications and resources in EOSC for the scientific services provided in EOSC-Pillar.

Abstract

The High Performance Computing (HPC) domain aims to optimize code in order to use the last multicore and parallel technologies including specific processor instructions. In this computing framework, portability and reproducibility are key concepts. A way to handle these requirements is to use Linux containers. These "light virtual machines" allow to encapsulate applications within its environment in Linux processes. Containers has been recently rediscovered due to their abilities to provide both multi-infrastructure environnement for developers and system administrators and reproducibility due to image building file. Two container solutions are emerging: Docker for micro-services and Singularity for computing applications. We present here the status of the ComputeOps project which has the goal to study the benefit of containers for HPC applications.

Abstract

Particle physics has an ambitious and broad experimental programme for the coming decades. This programme requires large investments in detector hardware, either to build new facilities and experiments, or to upgrade existing ones. Similarly, it requires commensurate investment in the R&D of software to acquire, manage, process, and analyse the shear amounts of data to be recorded. In planning for the HL-LHC in particular, it is critical that all of the collaborating stakeholders agree on the software goals and priorities, and that the efforts complement each other. In this spirit, this white paper describes the R&D activities required to prepare for this software upgrade. ©2019

Abstract

Background: The Blue Obelisk movement was established in 2005 as a response to the lack of Open Data,Open Standards and Open Source (ODOSOS) in chemistry. It aims to make it easier to carry out chemistryresearch by promoting interoperability between chemistry software, encouraging cooperation between OpenSource developers, and developing community resources and Open Standards. Results: This contribution looks back on the work carried out by the Blue Obelisk in the past 5 years and surveysprogress and remaining challenges in the areas of Open Data, Open Standards, and Open Source in chemistry. Conclusions: We show that the Blue Obelisk has been very successful in bringing together researchers anddevelopers with common interests in ODOSOS, leading to development of many useful resources freely availableto the chemistry community

The outdoor flight cage (length = 44 m, width = 20 m, height = 3 m, mesh size = 0.5 mm) was erected on a flat pasture at the Centre for Agricultural Bioscience International (CABI) in Egham (Surrey, UK). Artificial flowers (F1-F10) with their webcams were connected to five laptop computers, each protected by a golf umbrella. A sixth laptop was used to power a webcam at the colony nest entrance. Sucrose solution (40% v/v) is pushed into the feeding cup at a constant rate (3.3 μL/min). Bees have access to the sucrose solution through a hole in the middle of the horizontal platform. A webcam (video camera connected to a laptop computer running motion sensitive software) pointing at the flower records each movement occurring on the landing platform. Each time a bee enters the camera’s field of view a video clip is recorded (minimum duration = 5 s) giving information about the identity of the bee (tag number), its arrival and departure time, and any interaction with other foragers on the flower. Abstract

Particle physics has an ambitious and broad experimental programme for the coming decades. This programme requires large investments in detector hardware, either to build new facilities and experiments, or to upgrade existing ones. Similarly, it requires commensurate investment in the R&D of software to acquire, manage, process, and analyse the shear amounts of data to be recorded. In planning for the HL-LHC in particular, it is critical that all of the collaborating stakeholders agree on the software goals and priorities, and that the efforts complement each other. In this spirit, this white paper describes the R&D activities required to prepare for this software upgrade.

Abstract

Computing and software for big science 3(1), 7 (2019). doi:10.1007/s41781-018-0018-8, Particle physics has an ambitious and broad experimental programme for the coming decades. This programme requires large investments in detector hardware, either to build new facilities and experiments, or to upgrade existing ones. Similarly, it requires commensurate investment in the R&D of software to acquire, manage, process, and analyse the shear amounts of data to be recorded. In planning for the HL-LHC in particular, it is critical that all of the collaborating stakeholders agree on the software goals and priorities, and that the efforts complement each other.
