A method to evaluate the particle-phonon coupling (PC) corrections to the single-particle energies in semi-magic nuclei, based on the direct solution of the Dyson equation with PC corrected mass operator, is presented. It is used for finding the odd-even mass difference between even Pb and Sn isotopes and their odd-proton neighbors. The Fayans energy density functional (EDF) DF3-a is used which gives rather highly accurate predictions for these mass differences already at the mean-field level. In the case of the lead chain, account for the PC corrections induced by the low-laying phonons $2^+_1$ and $3^-_1$ makes agreement of the theory with the experimental data significantly better. For the tin chain, the situation is not so definite. In this case, the PC corrections make agreement better in the case of the addition mode but they spoil the agreement for the removal mode. A method is developed to consider the particle-phonon coupling (PC) effects in the calculation of the odd-even double mass differences (DMD) in semi-magic nuclei starting from the free $NN$-potential. The PC correction $\delta \Sigma^{\rm PC}$ to the mass operator $\Sigma$ is found in $g_L^2$-approximation, $g_L$ being the vertex of creating the $L$-phonon. The tadpole term of the operator $\delta \Sigma^{\rm PC}$ is taken into account. The method is based on a direct, without any use of the perturbation theory, solution of the Dyson equation with the mass operator $\Sigma(\epsilon){=}\Sigma_0{+}\delta \Sigma^{\rm PC}(\epsilon)$ for finding the single-particle energies and $Z$-factors. In its turn, they are used as an input for finding different PC corrections to the DMD values. A method is presented to evaluate the particle-phonon coupling (PC) corrections to the single-particle energies (SPEs) in semi-magic nuclei. In such nuclei always there is a collective low-lying $2^+$ phonon, and a strong mixture of single-particle and particle-phonon states often occurs. As in magic nuclei, the so-called $g^2_L$ approximation, where $g_L$ is the vertex of the $L$-phonon creation, can be used for finding the PC correction $\delta \Sigma^{\rm PC}(\varepsilon)$ to the initial mass operator $\Sigma_0$. In addition to the usual pole diagram, the phonon "tadpole" diagram is also taken into account. In semi-magic nuclei, the perturbation theory in $\delta \Sigma^{\rm PC}(\varepsilon)$ with respect to $\Sigma_0$ is often invalid for finding the PC corrected SPEs. Instead, the Dyson equation with the mass operator $\Sigma(\varepsilon){=}\Sigma_0{+}\delta \Sigma^{\rm PC}(\varepsilon)$ is solved directly, without any use of the perturbation theory. The possibility of neutron pairing in the $^1S_0$ channel is studied for dense neutron matter in a vicinity of the $\pi^0$ condensation point. The $^1S_0$ pairing gap $\Delta$ is shown to occur in a model with a pairing force induced by the exchange of a soft neutral pionic mode. The soft pion induced potential $V_{\pi}(r)$ is characterized by an attenuating oscillatory behavior in coordinate space, while in momentum space all $S$-wave matrix elements $V_{\pi}(p,p')$ are positive. We study different scenarios of topological phase transitions in the vicinity of the \pi^0 condensation point in neutron matter. The transitions occur between the Fermi-liquid state and a topologically different one with two sheets of the Fermi surface. Two possibilities of a rearrangement of quasiparticle degrees of freedom are shown: the first-order topological phase transition and the second-order one. The order of the phase transition is found to be strongly dependent on the value of the critical wave vector of the soft \pi^0 mode. The thermodynamics of the system is also studied. It is shown that the topology of the quasiparticle momentum distribution is mainly determined by the neutron matter density, while the temperature T is essential in a narrow density region. A simple explanation of the first-order topological phase transition at T=0 is given., Comment: 8 pages, 11 figures. Two aspects of the problem of evaluating double odd-even mass differences D_2 in semi-magic nuclei are studied related to existence of two components with different properties, a superfluid nuclear subsystem and a non-superfluid one. For the superfluid subsystem, the difference D_2 is approximately equal to 2\Delta, the gap \Delta being the solution of the gap equation. For the non-superfluid subsystem, D_2 is found by solving the equation for two-particle Green function for normal systems. Both equations under consideration contain the same effective pairing interaction. A quantum phase transition in strongly correlated Fermi systems beyond the topological quantum critical point is studied within the Fermi liquid approach. The transition occurs between two topologically equivalent states, each with three sheets of the Fermi surface. One of these states possesses a quasiparticle halo in the quasiparticle momentum distribution $n(p)$, while the other, the hole pocket. The transition is found to be of the first order with respect to both the coupling constant $g$ and the temperature $T$. The phase diagram of the system in the vicinity of this transition is constructed., Comment: 6 pages, 7 figures

A semi-microscopic model for nucleon pairing in nuclei is presented starting from the ab intio BCS gap equation with Argonne v18 force and the self-consistent Energy Density Functional Method basis characterized with the bare nucleon mass. The BCS theory is formulated in terms of the model space S0 with the effective pairing interaction calculated from the first principles in the subsidiary space S0. This effective interaction is supplemented with a small phenomenological addendum containing one phenomenological parameter universal for all medium and heavy atomic nuclei. We consider the latter as a phenomenological way to take into account both the many-body corrections to the BCS theory and the effective mass effects. For protons, the Coulomb interaction is introduced directly. Calculations made for several isotopic and isotonic chains of semi-magic nuclei confirm the validity of the model. A brief review of recent microscopic calculations of nuclear pairing gap is given. A semi-microscopic model is suggested in which the ab-initio effective pairing interaction is supplemented with a small phenomenological addendum. It involves a parameter which is universal for all medium and heavy nuclei. We discuss the relevant progress that has been made in the last few years on the microscopic theory of the pairing correlation in nuclei and the open problems that still must be solved in order to reach a satisfactory description and understanding of the nuclear pairing. The similarities and differences with the nuclear matter case are emphasized and described by few illustrative examples. The comparison of calculations of different groups on the same set of nuclei show, besides agreements, also discrepancies that remain to be clarified. The role of the many-body correlations, like screening, that go beyond the BCS scheme, is still uncertain and requires further investigation., Comment: 21 pages,7 figures; minor modification, accepted for publication in J. Spatial correlation characteristics of the anomalous density matrix $\kappa$ in a slab of nuclear matter with the Paris and Argonne v18 forces are calculated. A detailed comparison with predictions of the effective Gogny force is made. It is found that the two realistic forces lead to very close results which are qualitatively similar to those for the Gogny force. At the same time, the magnitude of $\kappa$ for realistic forces is essentially smaller than the one for the Gogny force. The correlation characteristics are practically independent of the magnitude of $\kappa$ and turn out to be quite close for the three kinds of the force. In particular, all of them predict a small value of the local correlation length at the surface of the slab and a big one, inside. These results are in agreement with those obtained recently by Pillet at al. for finite nuclei with the Gogny force., Comment: 19 pages, 13 figures

Ab initio gap equation for ^1S_0 pairing in a nuclear slab is solved for the Argonne v18 NN-potential. The gap function is compared in detail with the one found previously for the separable form of the Paris potential. The difference between the two gaps turned out to be about 10%. The gap equation in the $^1S_0$-channel is solved for a nuclear slab with the separable form of the Paris potential. The gap equation is considered in the model space in terms of the effective pairing interaction which is found in the complementary subspace. The absolute value of the gap $\Delta$ turned out to be very sensitive to the cutoff $K_{max}$ in the momentum space in the equation for the effective interaction. It is necessary to take $K_{max}=160-180 fm^{-1}$ to guarantee 1% accuracy for $\Delta$. The gap equation itself is solved directly, without any additional approximations. The solution reveals the surface enhancement of the gap $\Delta$ which was earlier found with an approximate consideration. A strong surface-volume interplay was found also implying a kind of the proximity effect. The diagonal matrix elements of $\Delta$ turned out to be rather close to the empirical values for heavy atomic nuclei., Comment: 17 pages, 12 figures
