A hybrid approach based on multirate signal processing and sensory data fusion is proposed for the condition monitoring and identification of fault signal signatures used in the Flight ECS (Engine Control System) unit. Though motor current signature analysis (MCSA) is widely used for fault detection now-a-days, the proposed hybrid method qualifies as one of the most powerful online/offline techniques for diagnosing the process faults. Existing approaches have some drawbacks that can degrade the performance and accuracy of a process-diagnosis system. In particular, it is very difficult to detect random stochastic noise due to the nonlinear behavior of valve controller. Using only Short Time Fourier Transform (STFT), frequency leakage and the small amplitude of the current components related to the fault can be observed, but the fault due to the controller behavior cannot be observed. Therefore, a framework of advanced multirate signal and data-processing aided with sensor fusion algorithms is proposed in this article and satisfactory results are obtained. In recent times, non-intrusive load monitoring (NILM) has emerged as an important tool for distribution-level energy management systems owing to its potential for energy conservation and management. However, load monitoring in smart building environments is challenging due to high variability of real-time load and varied load composition. Furthermore, as the volume and dimensionality of smart meters data increases, accuracy and computational time are key concerning factors. In view of these challenges, this paper proposes an improved NILM technique using multi-head (Mh-Net) convolutional neural network (CNN) under dynamic grid voltage conditions. An attention layer is introduced into the proposed CNN model, which helps in improving estimation accuracy of appliance power consumption. The performance of the developed model has been verified on an experimental laboratory setup for multiple appliance sets with varied power consumption levels, under dynamic grid voltages. Moreover, the effectiveness of the proposed model has been verified on widely used UK-DALE data, and its performance has been compared with existing NILM techniques. Results depict that the proposed model accurately identifies appliances, power consumptions and their time-of-use even during practical dynamic grid voltage conditions.

Ab initio molecular dynamics simulations using VASP was employed to calculate threshold displacement energies and defect formation energies of Y4Zr3O12 {\delta}-phase, which is the most commonly found phase in newly developed Zr and Al-containing ODS steels. The Threshold displacement energy (Ed) values are determined to be 28 eV for Zr3a primary knock-on atom along [111] direction, 40 eV for Zr18f atoms along [111] direction and 50 eV for Y recoils along [110] direction. Minimum Ed values for O and O' atoms are 13 eV and 16 eV respectively. The displacement energies of anions are much smaller compared to cations, thus suggesting that anion disorder is more probable than cation disorder. All directions except the direction in which inherent structural vacancies are aligned, cations tend to occupy another cation site. The threshold displacement energies are larger than that of Y2Ti2O7, the conventional precipitates in Ti containing ODS steels. Due to the partial occupancy of Y and Zr in the 18f position, the antisite formation energy is negligibly small, and it may help the structure to withstand more disorder upon irradiation. These results convey that Zr/Al ODS alloys, which have better corrosion resistance properties compared to the conventional Ti-ODS alloys, may also possess superior radiation resistance.

Conventional Oxide dispersion strengthened steels are characterized by thermally stable, high density of Y-Ti-O nanoclusters, which are responsible for their high creep strength. Ti plays a major role in obtaining a high density of ultrafine particles of optimum size range of 2-10 nm. In Al-containing ODS steels developed for corrosion resistance, Y-Al-O clusters formed are of size range 20 -100 nm, and Ti fails in making dispersions finer in the presence of Al. Usage of similar alloying elements like Zr in place of Ti is widely considered. In this study, binding energies of different stages of Y-Zr-O-Vacancy and Y-Al-O-Vacancy complexes in the bcc Iron matrix are studied by first-principle calculations. It is shown that in all the stages of formation, Y-Zr-O-Vacancy clusters have higher binding energy than Y-Al-O-Vacancy clusters and hence in ferritic steel containing both Zr and Al, Y-Zr-O-Vacancy clusters are more stable and more favored to nucleate than Y-Al-O-Vacancy clusters. The bonding nature in each stage is analyzed using charge density difference plots for the plausible reason for higher stability of Y-Zr-O-Vacancy clusters.

Current-fed half bridge converter with bidirectional switches on ac side and a full bridge converter on dc side of a high frequency transformer is an optimal topology for single stage galvanically isolated ac-dc converter for onboard vehicle charging application. AC side switches are actively commutated to achieve zero current switching (ZCS) using single phase shift modulation (SPSM) and discontinuous current phase shift modulation (DCPSM). Furthermore, zero voltage turn-on (ZVS) is achieved for dc side switches. Compared to SPSM, DCPSM maintains a constant peak current in the converter throughout the grid cycle of ac mains voltage. However, constant peak current contributes to a high circulating current near the zero crossings of ac mains voltage and also at light load conditions. This paper proposes an improved discontinuous current phase shift modulation (IDCPSM) to increase the efficiency of the converter across different loading conditions. A dual control variable is adopted to actively reduce the circulating current while maintaining soft switching of both ac and dc side switches across the grid cycle of ac mains voltage. Background and Objective: Tuberculosis (TB) is a significant public health issue and a leading cause of death worldwide. Millions of deaths can be averted by early diagnosis and successful treatment of TB patients. Automated diagnosis of TB holds vast potential to assist medical experts in expediting and improving its diagnosis, especially in developing countries like India, where there is a shortage of trained medical experts and radiologists. To date, several deep learning based methods for automated detection of TB from chest radiographs have been proposed. However, the performance of a few of these methods on the Indian chest radiograph data set has been suboptimal, possibly due to different texture of the lungs on chest radiographs of Indian subjects compared to other countries. Thus deep learning for accurate and automated diagnosis of TB on Indian datasets remains an important subject of research. Methods: The proposed work explores the performance of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for the diagnosis of TB in Indian chest x-ray images. Three different pre-trained neural network models, AlexNet, GoogLenet, and ResNet are used to classify chest x-ray images into healthy or TB infected. The proposed approach does not require any pre-processing technique. Also, other works use pre-trained NNs as a tool for crafting features and then apply standard classification techniques. However, we attempt an end to end NN model based diagnosis of TB from chest x-rays. The proposed visualization tool can also be used by radiologists in the screening of large datasets. Results: The proposed method achieved 93.40% accuracy with 98.60% sensitivity to diagnose TB for the Indian population. Conclusions: The performance of the proposed method is also tested against techniques described in the literature. The proposed method outperforms the state of art on Indian and Shenzhen datasets.

A chest radiograph, commonly called chest x-ray (CxR), plays a vital role in the diagnosis of various lung diseases, such as lung cancer, tuberculosis, pneumonia, and many more. Automated segmentation of the lungs is an important step to design a computer-aided diagnostic tool for examination of a CxR. Precise lung segmentation is considered extremely challenging because of variance in the shape of the lung caused by health issues, age, and gender. The proposed work investigates the use of an efficient deep convolutional neural network for accurate segmentation of lungs from CxR. We attempt an end to end DeepLabv3+ network which integrates DeepLab architecture, encoder-decoder, and dilated convolution for semantic lung segmentation with fast training and high accuracy. We experimented with the different pre-trained base networks: Resnet18 and Mobilenetv2, associated with the Deeplabv3+ model for performance analysis. The proposed approach does not require any pre-processing technique on chest x-ray images before being fed to a neural network. Morphological operations were used to remove false positives that occurred during semantic segmentation. We construct a CxR dataset of the Indian population that contain healthy and unhealthy CxRs of clinically confirmed patients of tuberculosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, interstitial lung disease, pleural effusion, and lung cancer. The proposed method is tested on 688 images of our Indian CxR dataset including images with severe abnormal findings to validate its robustness. We also experimented on commonly used benchmark datasets such as Japanese Society of Radiological Technology; Montgomery County, USA; and Shenzhen, China for state-of-the-art comparison. The performance of our method is tested against techniques described in the literature and achieved the highest accuracy for lung segmentation on Indian and public datasets.

We delineated the role of thermally excited ripples on thermal expansion properties of 2D honeycomb materials (free-standing graphene, 2D h-BN, and ML-MoS2), by explicitly carrying out three-dimensional (3D) and two-dimensional (2D) molecular dynamics simulations. In 3D simulations, the in-plane lattice parameter (a-lattice) of graphene and 2D h-BN shows thermal contraction over a wide range of temperatures and exhibits a strong system size dependence. The 2D simulations of the very same system show a reverse trend, where the a-lattice is expanding in the whole computed temperature range. Contrary to graphene and 2D h-BN, the a-lattice of ML-MoS2 shows thermal expansion in both 2D and 3D simulations and their system size dependence is marginal. By analyzing the phonon dispersion at 300 K, we found that the discrepancy between 2D and 3D simulations of graphene and 2D h-BN is due to the absence of out-of-plane bending mode (ZA) in 2D simulations, which is responsible for thermal contraction of a-lattice at low temperature. Meanwhile, all the phonon modes are present in 2D phonon dispersion of ML-MoS2, which indicates that the origin of ZA mode is not purely due to out-of-plane movement of atoms and also its effect on thermal expansion is not significant as found in graphene and 2D h-BN

Wavelet transform is proposed in this paper for detection of islanding and fault disturbances distributed generation (DG) based power system. An IEEE 14-bus system with DG penetration is considered for the detection of disturbances under different operating conditions. The power system is a hybrid combination of photovoltaic, and wind energy system connected to different buses with different level of penetration. The voltage signal is retrieved at the point of common coupling (PCC) and processed through wavelet transform to detect the disturbances. Further, energy and standard deviation (STD) as performance indices are evaluated and compared with a suitable threshold in order to analyze a disturbance condition. Uninterruptible power supply is the main motive of power utility companies that motivate them for identifying and locating the different types of faults as quickly as possible to protect the power system prevent complete power black outs using intelligent techniques. Thus, the present research work presents a novel method for detection of fault disturbances based on Wavelet Transform (WT) and Independent Component Analysis (ICA). The voltage signal is taken offline under fault conditions and is being processed through wavelet and ICA for detection. The time-frequency resolution from WT transform detects the fault initiation instant in the signal. Again, a performance index is calculated from independent component analysis under fault condition which is used to detect the fault disturbance in the voltage signal. The proposed approach is tested to be robust enough under various operating scenarios like without noise, with 20-dB noise and variation in frequency. Further, the detection study is carried out using a performance index, energy content, by applying the existing Fourier transform (FT), short time Fourier transform (STFT) and the proposed wavelet transform. Fault disturbances are detected if the energy calculated in each scenario is greater than the corresponding threshold value. Growth of mono-dispersed AlGaN nanowires of ternary wurtzite phase is reported using chemical vapour deposition technique in the vapour-liquid-solid process. The role of distribution of Au catalyst nanoparticles on the size and the shape of AlGaN nanowires are discussed. These variations in the morphology of the nanowires are understood invoking Ostwald ripening of Au catalyst nanoparticles at high temperature followed by the effect of single and multi-prong growth mechanism. Energy-filtered transmission electron microscopy is used as an evidence for the presence of Al in the as-prepared samples. A significant blue shift of the band gap, in the absence of quantum confinement effect in the nanowires with diameter about 100 nm, is used as a supportive evidence for the AlGaN alloy formation. Polarized resonance Raman spectroscopy with strong electron-phonon coupling along with optical confinement due to the dielectric contrast of nanowire with respect to that of surrounding media are adopted to understand the crystalline orientation of a single nanowire in the sub-diffraction limit of about 100 nm using 325 nm wavelength, for the first time. Extensive first-principle calculations on embedded clusters containing few O, Y, Ti, and Cr atoms as well as vacancies are performed to obtain interaction parameters to be applied in Metropolis Monte Carlo simulations, within the framework of a rigid lattice model. A novel description using both pair and triple parameters is shown to be more precise than the commonly used pair parameterization. Simulated annealing provides comprehensive data on the energetics, structure and stoichiometry of nm-size clusters at T=0. The results are fully consistent with the experimental finding of negligible coarsening and a high dispersion of the clusters, with the observation that the presence of Ti reduces the cluster size, and with the reported radiation tolerance of the clusters. In alloys without vacancies clusters show a planar structure, whereas the presence of vacancies leads to three-dimensional configurations. Additionally, Metropolis Monte Carlo simulations are carried out at high temperature in order to investigate the dependence of nanocluster composition on temperature. A good agreement between the existing experimental data on the ratios (Y+Ti):O, Y:Ti, (Y+Cr):O, and Y:Cr, and the simulation results is found. In some cases it is even possible to draw the conclusion that the respective alloys contained a certain amount of vacancies, and that the clusters analyzed were frozen-in high-temperature configurations. The comparison of experimental data with those obtained by simulations demonstrates that the assumption of nanoclusters consisting of nonstoichiometric oxides which are essentially coherent with the bcc lattice of the Fe-Cr matrix leads to reasonable results., Comment: 36 manuscript pages including 8 figures

Results obtained from the optical absorption and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy experiments have shown the formation of excitons in the silver-exchanged glass samples. These findings are reported here for the first time. Further, we investigate the dramatic changes in the photoemission properties of the silver-exchanged glass samples as a function of postannealing temperature. Observed changes are thought to be due to the structural rearrangements of silver and oxygen bonding during the heat treatments of the glass matrix. In fact, photoelectron spectroscopy does reveal these chemical transformations of silver-exchanged soda glass samples caused by the thermal effects of annealing in a high vacuum atmosphere. Photoluminescence study using the 325 nm He-Cd excitation is reported for the Au nanoclusters embedded in SiO2 matrix. Au clusters are grown by ion beam mixing with 100 KeV Ar+ irradiation on Au [40 nm]/SiO2 at various fluences and subsequent annealing at high temperature. The blue bands above ~3 eV match closely with reported values for colloidal Au nanoclusters and supported Au nanoislands. Radiative recombination of sp electrons above Fermi level to occupied d-band holes are assigned for observed luminescence peaks. Peaks at 3.1 eV and 3.4 eV are correlated to energy gaps at the X- and L-symmetry points, respectively, with possible involvement of relaxation mechanism. The blue shift of peak positions at 3.4 eV with decreasing cluster size is reported to be due to the compressive strain in small clusters. A first principle calculation based on density functional theory using the full potential linear augmented plane wave plus local orbitals (FP-LAPW+LO) formalism with generalized gradient approximation (GGA) for the exchange correlation energy is used to estimate the band gaps at the X- and L-symmetry points by calculating the band structures and joint density of states (JDOS) for different strain values in order to explain the blueshift of ~0.1 eV with decreasing cluster size around L-symmetry point., Comment: 13 pages, 7 Figures Only in PDF format; To be published in J. of Chem. Temperature-controlled-growth of silver nanoclusters in soda glass matrix is investigated by low-frequency Raman scattering spectroscopy. Growth of the nanoclusters is ascribed to the diffusion-controlled precipitation of silver atoms due to annealing the silver-exchanged soda glass samples. For the first time, Rutherford backscattering measurements performed in this system to find out activation energy for the diffusion of silver ions in the glass matrix. Gold nanoclusters are grown by 1.8 MeV Au++ implantation in silica matrix and subsequent air annealing in the temperature range of 873K-1273K. Post-annealed samples show plasmon resonance in the optical region (~ 2.38-2.51 eV) for average cluster radii ~1.04-1.74 nm. A blueshift of the plasmon peak is observed with decreasing cluster size in the annealed samples. Similar trend of blueshift with decreasing cluster size in case of Au nanoclusters embedded in the porous alumina matrix [B. Palpant, et al., Phys. Rev. Gold nanoclusters are grown by 1.8 MeV Au^\sup{2+} implantation on c-Al\sub{2}O\sub{3}(0001)substrate and subsequent air annealing at temperatures 1273K. Post-annealed samples show plasmon resonance in the optical (561-579 nm) region for average cluster sizes ~1.72-2.4 nm.
