The aim of this paper is to evaluate changes in Italy's competitiveness in the global wood products market, with a particular focus on wooden furniture and wood panels, both final and intermediate products of the crucial wooden furniture supply chain. The analysis is conducted through a cross-country comparison using trade flow matrices and various descriptive indices: Market Share, Trade Competitiveness Index, Balassa's Revealed Comparative Advantage Index, and the Symmetric Balassa Index. Furthermore, this study also examines intra-industry trade using the Grubel–Lloyd Index. While each index has its limitations when used individually, their combined analysis can provide a more comprehensive view. The study covers the period from 1996 to 2019, using data from FAO and COMTRADE sources. The results show that Italy maintains a significant position in the international furniture market, although this position has deteriorated over time. Conversely, Italy remains a net importer of wood panels. Trade flows have become more concentrated, with Canada and Germany still holding importance in the international market. However, Asian countries have now become the core of the commercial network. China has emerged as the leading exporting country in all product categories considered, with Vietnam and Malaysia also increasing in importance. Noteworthy progress has also been recorded by Russia and Poland in Europe. Additionally, the study discusses the implications of these findings for rural development, particularly in regions dependent on the wood-product sectors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Quick Response Code (QR code) is the representative device of a particular branch of marketing called mobile marketing. The code is found throughout various productive sectors, including the agro-food sector. This work investigates whether consumers are willing to pay a premium price for extra information on a bottle of extra-virgin olive oil (EVOO) by means of the QR-code. Based on data collected from 1006 interviews conducted in Italy, we implemented the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) model to ascertain the factors that could influence consumer’s willingness to pay (WTP) for extra QR code information. Empirical results show the influence of attitudes, subjective norms and consumer personal characteristics such as mavenism and motivation for shopping (utilitarian vs. hedonic motivation) in explaining willingness to pay for a bottle of QR code labeled olive oil., International Journal on Food System Dynamics, Vol 8, No 1 (2017)

The current study investigates the significance and power of direct and indirect effects of values and attitudes on intention to buy fair trade products and on self-reported behaviors. Drawing on previous research, we selected three attitudinal measures – Consciousness for Fair Consumption, Environmental Concern, Moral Reasoning – and two categories of human values, Power and Universalism. Through a web-based survey conducted in Italy we collected data analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling. Results showed that Universalism exerted a positive indirect effect on buying fair traded products while Power exerted a negative effect. Therefore, according to Theory of Planned Behavior (Ajzen, 1991), the intention was the only direct antecedent of behavior., International Journal on Food System Dynamics, Vol 8, No 2 (2017)

Fair trade, Attitudes, Italy, Consumer behaviour - Abstract
In the context of food consumption, several issues have been widely discussed in reference to a large array of attributes and product types used as evidence of growing consumer feeling toward ethical issues linked to moral and social consciousness. Animal welfare, fair prices for farmers, social aspects of production, and preservation of cultural features, are some of the product attributes for which consumer behaviour has been analyzed in the context of ethical consumerism. This paper aims at providing insights into consumer motivational systems and their relations with fair trade product purchasing behaviour. In order to pursue this goal, the effectiveness of two alternative approaches, proposed in the literature and tested in Belgium and Germany, were formally assessed in Italy. The two sets of scales were tested for predicting purchasing behaviour by using a sample of Italian consumers., Italian Review of Agricultural Economics, Vol 69 No 2-3 (2014)

This paper aims to provide insights into consumer motivational systems and their relations with fair trade product purchasing behavior. In order to pursue this goal, the effectiveness of two alternative approaches, proposed in the literature and tested in Belgium and Germany, were formally assessed in Italy. The two sets of scales were tested for predicting purchasing behavior by using a sample of Italian consumers. Although both sets of scales showed good internal reliability and statistical evidence of behavioral predictive validity, one of the two sets under assessment is able to depict actual behavior in much greater depth than the other.

fair trade, ethical consumption, personal values, contextual factors - Abstract
Ethical consumption may be divided into ecologically friendly and socially conscious patterns. Among these two distinct aspects, in this paper we focus our attention on the second one. More precisely, we are interested to investigate Fair Trade (FT) products consumption, one prominent example of socially conscious consumption. Fair consumption signifies consuming with reference to fair terms of trade for poor producers in poor countries. Scientific interest and researches into socially conscious consumption and fair trade consumption, in particular, have grown significantly in recent decades. Several authors have researched about motivational systems and their relations with FT products purchasing behavior, so the relationships between values, attitudes, intention and behavior has been widely investigated with the aim to determine the flow of causality from the values, attitudes, intentions and purchasing consumer behavior. Numerous empirical studies consider the linkages between Schwartz’s values and behavior. From many empirical findings a flow of causality from values to behavior emerges suggesting that values may influence behavior both directly and indirectly through mediator variables. Among the mediators proposed to improve the relationship between values and behavior in the food area is the Food-Related Lifestyle (FRL) (Grunert, 1993; Grunert et al., 1997). Moreover, the motivational system that influence the purchasing behavior is strongly affected by the social context, that is socio-economic and cultural variables. Studies on values-behavior relationships have been conducted in a large variety of cultures (Davidov et al., 2008). The obtained results suggest the existence of similarities and differences of value priorities in relation to other variables, specifically related to socio-economic context that could be a relevant factor affecting personal values and behaviors and it could explain differences both across countries and within countries. Starting from this results, in this paper we aim to investigate the role of socio-economic context and personal values as intermediate mediator both on the intention and fair trade consumption product in Italy, where FT is a growing phenomenon but still very restricted. In particular, we aimed to assess how the level of economic development, the quality of life, the social environments and the Schwartz’ set of values, influence both intention and FT purchasing behavior. For this purpose we conducted a survey based analysis. Data on fair trade consumption and information on socio-demographic and economic characteristics, personal values, intention and consumption behavior were collected by means of a web administered questionnaire submitted through the website of the General Assembly of the Italian Fair Trade (AGICES), the most important Italian fair trade organization. More than five hundred and fifty responses were collected and analyzed using a structural equations model.

Fair trade, consumer behavior, values, Italy - Abstract
Up to 80’s, interest for sustainable development in scientific research is growing fast. In the economic field, several aspects have been focused including sustainable consumption as a possible lever of sustainable development. Sustainable consumption refers to an environmental and social consumer behavior. Fair Trade (FT) consumerism, defined in terms of fair prices for the products of producers in developing countries, is a category of social consumption. This paper focuses on FT. With it we aim to improve the understanding of the FT consumer behavior in South and North Italy, where the consumption of FT products is a growing phenomenon but still low in comparison with other European countries. To pursue this goal we conducted a survey in 2014. In the analysis we consider the relationships between socio-demografic and economic variables, purchase intention, Schwartz values, income and consumer buying behavior.

Globally, bitterness in food is not a preferred attribute by consumers, for several reasons. In the case of Extra Virgin Olive Oil its presence is fundamental as it is a healthiness indicator, being strictly linked to the antioxidant content. The current study aimed to assess the extent of Italian consumers' preferences for bitterness taste of Extra Virgin Olive Oil. Real choices made by shoppers at the store shelf of a hypermarket were recorded and then compared with the selected Extra Virgin Olive Oil sensory profiles evaluated by a professional panel. Findings reveal that bitterness exerts a negative willingness to pay equal to -1.18 €/liter. Furthermore, consumers tend to overestimate the perception of Extra Virgin Olive Oil bitterness compared to sensory experts. Results provide new evidences of consumer preferences for sweet sensory profile of Extra Virgin Olive Oil and bitter aversion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Italian Rural Development Programs 2007-2013 ,(Common Agricultural Policy) - Abstract
Rural development policy has gained importance over time to enhance sustainable regional development paths, especially for European convergence regions. In this perspective we aim to emphasize that different models of regional development could be introduced via rural development policy: (i) the agricultural development models, with a more specific sector-oriented approach, and (ii) the rural development models, with a more territorial (and systemic) approach. Both development patterns imply complex strategies that involve coordination and complementarities among European Funds. In this light this paper explores 21 RRDPs of the Italian regions, in order to identify their development strategies and to evaluate whether or not they are coherent with their needs.

This paper investigates consumer preferences for extra-virgin olive oil in Italy. In order to segment the Italian extra-virgin olive oil market, the information obtained from a nationwide survey was analysed by using a randomised parameter logit regression and implementing a cluster analysis on the estimates of consumers’ willingness to pay for origin of olives, production method and sensory attributes. Our results show that information on origin, both in terms of the adoption of PDO or PGI certification and labelling of the origin, production method and organoleptic characteristics crucially affect consumer preferences for olive oil. Market segmentation shows there are consumers who are particularly sensitive to origin and organic certification as well as labelling clarity.

The transport phase is one of the crucial stages that can be improved to reduce the environmental impact of the fresh fruit and vegetable supply chain. In this paper, we calculate the environmental impact of feasible logistic alternatives for the above-mentioned supply chain so as to identify the type of transportation that incurs the lowest environmental costs. Specifically, we consider the early potato supply chain as a case study, as it involves one of the main fresh vegetables exported from Italy. Consumers' willingness to pay for the environmental impact of different logistic chains was obtained through life cycle assessment. Our results show that rail transport could reduce environmental impact in terms of tons of oil equivalent, environmental loads, and fuel consumption while ensuring reasonable shipment times. Development of an efficient rail transport system would be positively considered by consumers, enhancing their preferences for Italian products. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Major changes have occurred in the agri-food sector, generating new and more complex concepts of food quality. One of the most significant indicators of these changes is market restructuring, in terms of rapid concentration among retailers, the dominance of chain stores and their imposition of cost and quality constraints. Retailers currently play a more important role in ensuring food product quality and safety than public authorities. To analyze this new aspect in the food sector, we carried out a survey on organic strawberry consumption in Italy. This segment of the organic sector is particularly interesting because the conventional strawberry may be considered an unsafe product due to the large use of chemical inputs in the production process. Nevertheless, the demand for organic strawberries demand is fairly low. We attempted to investigate such concerns through a questionnaire-based survey submitted to a representative sample of 318 Italian households. The questionnaire was structured into three areas of information to collect data related to consumer preferences for different characteristics of organic strawberries and psychometric and socio-economic variables. The data were analyzed using a Logit model to derive a demand estimate for organic strawberries. Our first results indicate the presence of a major role played by modern retailers and consumer lifestyles to drive the final demand of high-quality and safe food products.

In the years to come Rural Development Policies will be an increasingly important part of EU Cohesion Policies. In particular, Convergence Regions with a high percentage of rural areas and a major development gap will be the most affected by this scenario. The objectives of this paper are twofold. The first is to analyze Italian Rural Development Programs in order to investigate how the Italian regional authorities have interpreted the potential role of the new RD programs and identified the specific strategies to be pursued. The second objective is to evaluate the coherence between strategies and tools indicated in the different programs. The financial plans will be compared in order to detect the possible different strategic approaches existing among regions characterized by different situations and development levels of the agricultural sector and the rural economy. For developing the analysis we will adopt the menu approach (Terluin, Venema, 2004). We will analyze three main steps which have to be taken in applying this method: (1) identification of rural development priorities; (2) selection of rural development measures to determine rural development priorities; and (3) allocation of finance to take such rural development measures. Following this approach, the 21 Italian Rural Development Programs will be compared. The first results show that the different regions selected quite a large number of rural development measures from the potential menu. Moreover, the different importance given to the agricultural and rural sectors in selecting various measures is never clear-cut.

In order to pursue this goal, the effectiveness of two alternative approaches were formally assessed and validated by using a sample of Italian consumers. One approach is based on two attitudinal scales, namely i) attitude to fair trade in general and ii) attitude to fair trade products. It involves a complex theoretical model, firstly validated in Belgium to assess the importance of the knowledge, information and attitude toward fair trade. The other approach considers intention and buying behaviour as determined by a synthetic indicator of action tendency, called Consciousness for Fair Consumption, resulting from personal experiences, norms, values and attitudes. Although both sets of scales showed good internal reliability and statistical evidence of behavioural predictive validity, one of the two sets is able to depict actual behaviour in much greater depth than the other. part-time ,mercato del lavoro agricolo, sottoccupazione - Abstract

PVS ,indebitamento ,aggiustamento strutturale - Abstract

quadro macroeconomico ,produzione agroalimentare ,strutture agrarie - Abstract

Socio-ecological crisis, waste economy, organized violence, social embeddedness, commodification - Abstract
Since the mid-90s three million people living in the metropolitan area of Naples (Italy) have been facing one of the most dramatic socio-ecological crisis witnessed in Western Europe. This is a crisis orchestrated by Mafia-like organizations (e.g. the Neapolitan Mafia also known as Camorra) and their interest in the illegal management of waste disposal and incineration in the shadow of a weak state, a phenomenon often referred to as the ‘Land of Fires’. Using evidence from this prolonged socio-ecological crisis, in this chapter, we attempt to inductively mobilise the Polanyian notion of embeddedness, to understand the establishment and expansion of a waste economy in diffused violent social and economic relations. We particularly attempt to extend the notion of ‘embedded economy’, building on the work of Karl Polanyi (1944). We argue that the process of social embeddedness through illegal and violent practices are particularly intense in contexts of socio-ecological crises, where the expropriation of land and destruction of nature is coupled with the disarticulation of the role of the state by criminal organizations.

Although Forest Principles promoting responsible forest management were formally adopted in 1992, the sustainability of forests is still undermined by harmful practices. In this regard, voluntary forest certification may represent an effective way to lessen the negative impacts of timber and forestry products upon the environment and upon the living conditions of local populations. This work aims to investigate the role of socio-demographic characteristics, knowledge of the forestry certification schemes and attitudinal factors on the purchasing intention of certified wood-derived products in Italy. A convenience sample of 371 consumers were interviewed through an online–administered questionnaire, and data collected were analysed by means of an ordered probit model. The results show that income and age, together with knowledge of the main certification labels and the attitudes towards certifications, have a positive and statistically significant effect on intentions to purchase certified wood products Keywords, International Journal on Food System Dynamics, Vol 9, No 4 (2018): Special issue: Credence attibutes, consumer trust, and sensory expectations in modern food markets

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the role of socio-economic context in affecting the relationship between personal values and the purchase of fair trade (FT) products. Design/methodology/approach The study was based on data and information collected by means of a web-administered survey and was performed in two steps. First, an explanatory factor analysis on the Schwartz value system and a confirmatory factor analysis on socio-economic context variables were carried out. Second, the per capita GDP at provincial level and the predicted factor scores were used in an ordered probit model to explain the expenditure level of FT products. Findings The results provide evidence that the value system has an effect on the consumption of FT products, but the economic context, in particular the average wealth at province level, is also relevant and plays a role by either affecting FT product purchasing levels directly or interacting with personal values. Research limitations/implications Because of the electronic submission and the specific channel used in the survey, the sample cannot be considered as representative of Italian consumers, and thus the analysis has a merely descriptive (non-inferential) function. Originality/value While several studies investigated how personal values affect consumers’ behaviour directly or indirectly, very few studies analysed the way socio-economic context interacts with the value structure and the way both aspects influence ethical consumption. The present study analyses this last aspect and provides evidence of the role economic context plays in affecting the relationship between personal values and FT products consumption.

Earth-Surface Processes - Abstract

COOL - country of origin labelling ,ETICHETTATURA ,Cost-benefit analysi ,ORIGINE ,Traceability ,PATATA PRECOCE ,COUNTRY OF ORIGIN ,LABELLING ,EARLY POTATO - Abstract
By means of cost-benefit analysis, we assess whether it is worth introducing a traceability protocol in Italy, which allows to ascertain the area of origin of early potatoes. Until recently, early potato was a major export product in southern Italy. However, in the last ten years the sector has clearly stagnated. Our study seems to show that a country-of-origin labelling (COOL) policy - if appropriately implemented - could make this product competitive once again.
