Spatial distribution of vegetation diversity, timber production, and carbon storage in secondary tropical rainforest at South Kalimantan, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 23: 6147-6154. Sustainable management in secondary tropical rainforests requires basic information about stand characteristics, mainly related to productivity and biodiversity. This study aimed to quantify vegetation diversity, timber production, and carbon storage from various sites of secondary forests in South Kalimantan. Forest inventory was conducted using a census method at seven different natural forest management unit compartments. Four parameters were measured from each tree, including the type of species, commercial categories, tree diameter, and tree height. Individual tree volume and biomass were estimated using allometric equations, while carbon storage was determined using a conversion factor from biomass. Three indicators were used to evaluate vegetation diversity: richness, heterogeneity, and evenness. The analysis of correlations was applied to examine the relationship between vegetation diversity and stand productivity with a significant level of 5%. Results found that there were 41 tree species in the study site comprising 20 commercial and 21 non-commercial species. The highest richness (R') was recorded in compartment 18X by approximately 4.0, while the most increased heterogeneity (H') and evenness (E') were observed in compartment 18Y by around 2.4 and 0.7, respectively. The accumulation of timber production varied in each site, with a range of 45.46-68.32 m3 ha-1. The highest carbon storage was noted in compartment 19Y (38.74±1.79 t C ha-1), while the lowest was found in compartment 18W (20.76±0.93 t C ha-1). The relative contribution of commercial species to timber production and carbon storage was substantially higher than non-commercial species at all sites. However, there was not a significant correlation between vegetation diversity and stand productivity (P>0.05). Overall, our study concluded that the secondary tropical forest ecosystems in the site had good vegetation diversity, timber production, and carbon storage.

Influence of land cover types on soil quality and carbon storage in Moramo Education Estate, Southeast Sulawesi, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 23: 4371-4376. This study investigated the influence of different land cover types on soil quality and carbon storage in Moramo Education Estate (MEE). Information is required as fundamental consideration to determine the best landscape management strategies for supporting soil conservation and climate change mitigation. Data were collected from three types of land cover generally found in this area, including forests, shrubs, and savannas. Three permanent sampling plots were randomly placed in every land cover as replicates with a size of 20 m × 20 m. Six parameters were used to describe the soil quality, i.e., soil acidity, soil organic carbon, total nitrogen, available phosphorus, exchangeable potassium, and cation exchange capacity. The above and belowground carbon storage from every plot was quantified. The soil quality and carbon storage among land cover types were compared using analysis of variance and Tukey’s honestly significant difference. Pearson’s correlation analysis was also applied to evaluate the relationship between soil quality and carbon storage. The results show that soil quality significantly differed in the exchangeable potassium and cation exchange capacity. A similar trend was also demonstrated in aboveground carbon storage. The highest average carbon storage was recorded in forests (150.50 ± 27.79 t ha?1), followed by shrubs (52.50 ± 15.02 t ha?1) and savannas (45.97 ± 4.42 t ha?1). The total carbon storage at different land covers was significantly correlated to soil acidity, available phosphorus, and cation exchange capacity. Carbon storage improved with the increased available phosphorus and cation exchange capacity. In contrast, carbon storage was negatively correlated with soil acidity. Overall, the land cover types significantly influenced soil quality and carbon storage in MEE.

Stand density and species diversity are two indicators that are highly related to forest productivity. However, the effect of those variables on the productivity of community forest is rarely documented. This study evaluates the influence of stand density and species diversity on timber production and carbon stock in the community forest. The study area was located in Madiun District. A field survey was conducted in four different community forest sites, i.e. Morang, Kuwiran, Randualas, and Kare. The sampling technique was by quadrat method using a sample plot size of 25 m x 25 m. The number of sample plots used in this study was 64 units, which were evenly distributed in every site. Comparison of stand attributes among sites was examined by Kruskal-Wallis test and followed by Kruskal-Nemenyi test on the effects of stand density and species diversity on timber production and carbon stock were assessed separately for each parameter using the generalized least square regression test. Vegetation diversity, structure and composition of three forest ecosystems in Angsana coastal area, South Kalimantan, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 23: 2640-2647. Vegetation communities around coastal ecosystems play important roles in mitigating natural disaster and climate change. However, available information about vegetation communities in coastal areas is still limited despite being a requirement in developing strategies for environmental preservation. Angsana coastal area in South Kalimantan, Indonesia has unique characteristics in which it has three different forest ecosystems, namely heath forest (HF), beach forest (BF), and mangrove forest (MF). This study aimed to identify the vegetation diversity, structure and composition of the three forest ecosystems in Angsana coastal area. A field survey was conducted using transect line methods with a sampling plot size of 10 × 10 m and an interval of 20 m. Vegetation communities were assessed using species abundance, plant diversity, importance value index (IVI), and similarity level. Results showed that 37 species from 25 families were recorded at the study site. The highest species abundance was observed in HF (22 species), followed by BF (18 species) and MF (7 species). The same trend was found for vegetation diversity, in which HF had the highest richness (Dmg = 4.52), heterogeneity (H' = 2.86), and evenness (J' = 0.94). Hibiscus tiliaceus L. had the highest IVI in BF in all vegetation stages, and Rhizophora mucronata Lam. consistently had the greatest IVI in MF in all stages. Species thet exhibited the highest IVI in HF were Adina minutiflora Valeton (seedlings), Rhodedomia tomentosa and Premna serratifolia L. (saplings), Tristania maingayi Duthie (poles), and Vitex ovata Thunb. (trees). Our study also observed that species abundance in forest ecosystems gradually declined from seedlings to trees, except in MF. Among the three forest types, vegetation composition was highly similar between MF and BF, with a similarity level of 47.1%. Based on these results, this study concluded that the three forest ecosystems in Angsana coastal area exhibit a highly diverse vegetation structure, and each type of forest has specific characteristics as its entity.

Understanding the relationship between soil chemical characteristics and forest productivity is importantly required to support sustainable forest management, mainly in eucalyptus plantation. This study investigated the influence of soil chemical properties on the growth performance of Eucalyptus urophylla which established in dryland ecosystems, East Nusa Tenggara. Forest inventory was undertaken by N-trees sampling in the priority locations for E. urophylla development, located in Buat, Fatukoto1, and Fatukoto2. Four parameters were selected to describe the growth performance of E. urophylla , comprising diameter, height, volume, and mean annual increment. In each sampling point, soil sample was collected at the depths of 0-10, 11-20, and 21-30 cm. Then, the sample was composited before brought to the laboratory for quality analysis. Six parameters were selected to quantify the soil chemical characteristics, namely soil acidity (pH), soil organic carbon (SOC), total nitrogen (TN), available phosphorus (Av-P), exchangeable potassium (Exc-K), and cation exchange capacity (CEC). Results found that soil chemical properties from three locations were significantly different in pH, SOC, Av-P, and CEC. However, this study recorded the content of TN and Exc-K were statistically equal among the three sites. Difference soil chemical properties were also followed by the variation growth of E. urophylla , particularly in diameter and height. The highest volume of eucalyptus stand was observed in Fatukoto1 (181.06 + 95.46 m 3 ha -1 ), followed by Buat (142.67 + 27.19 m 3 ha -1 ) and FatukotoII (99.09 + 62.46 m 3 ha -1 ). There were four soil parameters that meaningfully affected the growth performance of E. urophylla , i.e. pH, Av-P, Exc-K, and CEC. Among those parameters, Av-P demonstrated a consistent effect on the growth performance of E. urophylla . According to these findings, this study concluded that Av-P substantially provided higher effect on the growth performance of E. urophylla than other soil chemical parameters.

Traditional medicinal plants and their utilization by local communities around Lambung Mangkurat Education Forests, South Kalimantan, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 23: 306-314. Lambung Mangkurat Education Forests (LMEF) is a unique forest area with high plant diversity, including medicinal plants. This study aimed to document the list of natural medicinal plant species in LMEF and analyze the community perceptions on utilizing them. Exploratory surveys collected data through field observation and interviews with people living in villages around LMEF. The inventory of medicinal plants was conducted by line transect method with 1,000 m long and 20 m wide. Meanwhile, indigenous communities' description of medicinal plant utilization was explored using an interview process on fifty respondents. The results showed that 56 medicinal plant species were naturally distributed in LMEF. Most plants have habitus as trees, wherein local communities commonly use their leaves as traditional medicine. Local people generally applied the extraction process using hot water to obtain the benefit of these plants. Interestingly, more than 70% of respondents prefer traditional medicine to drugs. These findings indicated that the sustainable management of LMEF can support the vital role of forest ecosystems for people's health.

Fertilization and weed control are regularly conducted as the main silvicultural prescriptions in the eucalyptus plantation forest. However, the interaction effects of both treatments on eucalyptus performance are still not deeply understood, even though these treatments require high investment. This circumstance may potentially inhibit the managers to formulate more efficient maintenance strategy for increasing stand productivity. This study examined the interaction effects of fertilization and weed control on growth, biomass, and carbon storage in eucalyptus hybrid (E. pellita x E. brassiana). Results demonstrated that without both treatments, the average stand volume only reached 37.9 m3 ha -1 with the mean biomass and carbon storage approached 25.4 and 12.7 Mg ha -1, respectively. In contrast, the use of both treatments simultaneously improved the mean volume around 60.4 m3 ha -1 with the average biomass and carbon storage closed to 37.6 and 18.8 Mg ha -1. Furthermore, the development of eucalyptus hybrid using fertilization without weed control only gained the mean wood production approximately 58.7 m3 ha -1 while the practice of weed control without fertilization only resulted the average volume nearly 43.7 m3 ha -1. These facts indicated fertilization exhibited higher influence than weed control on the performance of eucalyptus hybrid.

Planting depth management is a silvicultural regime that highly related to standing productivity. However, the influence of planting depth on stand productivity is not deeply understood by forest managers. This study examined the effect of planting depth on early growth, aboveground biomass, and carbon storage in Eucalyptus pellita which planted in Ultisols. An experiment comprising two treatments of planting depth, namely 10 cm and 20 cm, was set up using a randomized complete block design. Several parameters were selected to assess the preliminary growth of E. pellita, i.e. survival rate, height, diameter, and volume. Aboveground biomass and carbon storage were estimated in each tree component such as stem, branches, bark, and leaves. Data collection was conducted in 6, 12, and 18 months after planting. Comparison means of every indicator were analyzed using t-test with a significant level of 5%. Results demonstrated the different planting depths did not have a significant influence on survival rate as well as biomass distribution and carbon storage in leaves at the end of 18 months. Nevertheless, a substantial effect of planting depth was obviously recorded in all the rest indicators. The use of planting depth 20 cm potentially increased volume, biomass, and carbon storage ranging 21.5 – 32.1%.

Cajuput is a plant that plays an important role for forest industry development. Its leaves contain essential oil and become one of the non-timber forest products. The productivity of cajuput leaves is affected by certain factors, one of them are the level of land suitability. This study investigated the land suitability for cajuput establishment and its inference on silviculture strategy. Study location was situated in Forest Resort Gubugrubuh, Gunungkidul District. Data collection was conducted in 3 site that converted as the priority site of cajuput plantation namely site 75, site 78, and site 80. We used 6 indicator of land attributes including altitude, slope, rainfall, temperature, soil acidity, and soil organic carbon. The assessment of land suitability was determined by qualitative approach using storie and root square method. The result showed the level of land suitability was classified into N1 (currently not suitable) referring to the storie method, meanwhile it was categorized into S3 (marginally suitable) according to the root square method. This study also discovered the distinctive land attributes which became the limiting factors of cajuput growth in each site. The best silviculture strategies for supporting cajuput development in each site were terrace construction, plant distance management, and fertilization.

Nugroho Y, Supandi, Suyanto, Matatula J, Wirabuana PYAP. 2021. Influence of understorey diversity on wildlife at the coal mining reclamation area in South Kalimantan, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 22: 3736-3743. The existence of understorey at the coal mining reclamation area provides an important contribution to improve the environmental quality, especially the wildlife presence. Therefore, this study aims to determine the influence of understorey diversity on the wildlife at the coal mining reclamation area managed by the PT Borneo Indobara, South Kalimantan. This study used an ecological survey conducted in three reclamation areas classified based on the dominant species supporting the process, namely Paraserianthes falcataria (L-1), Anthocephalus cadamba (L-2), and a mixture of both species (L-3). The data were collected in two observation periods, namely August 2019 and August 2020. The results showed that at the first observation, ten families of understorey were observed from the survey and the highest diversity was recorded in L-2 (H'=1.71), followed by L-1 (H'=1.54), and L-3 (H'=1.27). Meanwhile, the wildlife in the first periods was only 6 species consisting of 3 birds, 2 reptiles, and 1 mammal. The number of species from every site was relatively equal at the first observation. In the second observation, the diversity of understorey considerably increased with approximately 22 families from the inventory. The highest understorey diversity in this observation was recorded in L-1 (H'=3.30), L-2 (H'=3.05), and L-3 (H'=3.04). Also, the higher understorey diversity was followed by the higher wildlife with 29 species, which consists of 26 birds, 2 reptiles, and 1 mammal. The highest appearance of bird species was in the L-1 with approximately 19 species, while the number of birds in L-2 and L-3 was relatively similar with approximately 15 species. Based on these results, the understorey diversity significantly contributes to improving the wildlife diversity at the coal mining reclamation area, primarily from the bird species.

The growth, aboveground biomass, crown development, and leaf characteristics of three Eucalyptus species at initial stage of planting in Jepara, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 22: 2859-2869. Industry development, climate change mitigation and renewable energy currently become the most essential challenge in tropical forest management, primarily in Indonesia. The existence of tropical forests is not only managed to maintain the stability of wood supply for commercial industries but also to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the atmosphere and to generate energy alternatives from tree biomass. To answer this challenge, the development of fast-growing species like eucalyptus can become a good solution. However, the productivity of eucalyptus depends on its adaptability to the site condition. Therefore, understanding site-species interaction becomes the fundamental requirement before planted on a large scale. This study aimed to evaluate the initial performance of eucalyptus species developed in Jepara. An experiment consisted of three different eucalyptus species, i.e., E. alba, E. pellita, and E. urophylla, was established using a randomized complete block design. Sixteen parameters were selected to assess the eucalyptus performance, including survival, height, diameter, biomass accumulation (stem, branches, foliage, and total aboveground), crown length, crown radius, crown projection area, crown ratio, individual leaf area, individual leaf dry weight, specific leaf area, leaf mass area, and leaf area index. The comparison of the mean of tree attributes from each species was examined using ANOVA, followed by HSD Tukey. Results showed that all measured parameters indicated a significant difference among the three species (p0.05). The preliminary performance of E. pellita was relatively better than the other two species, mainly related to height (3.00±0.21 m), total aboveground biomass (49.86±3.60 kg ha-1), crown projection area (2.68±0.27 m2 ), and leaf area index (5.76±0.44). Our study concluded the initial performance of E. pellita in Jepara was substantially superior to E. alba and E. urophylla. Nevertheless, continuous evaluation is needed to monitor the consistent performance of those species in the study area.

The native tropical pine (Pinus merkusii Jungh. and de Vriese) has been genetically improved in Indonesia since 1977; nevertheless, minor evaluations of aphid resistance have been conducted since 2004. As a result, a progeny test for aphid resistance was established in 2010 in Lawu, Central Java, Indonesia. Subjects in the trial were attacked significantly at the rate of 30.7% after 4 years, but surprisingly, some individuals were found to be healthy without any aphid attack. The observed a 7-year progeny trial comprised 34 families with 4 trees per unitary plot and replicated in 10 blocks. At 7 years, observations during 9 months (April–December) showed that there were differences in the range of resistance across families. The stem diameter, oleoresin production, and resistance to aphid attack were evaluated, and all traits were distinct among families except for oleoresin exudation from the western side of the stem. Five families performed above average for all three traits, while three other families had high diameter and maintained good oleoresin production. These eight families can be included in a forward selection strategy. Cluster analysis revealed that the eight best families were grouped into two of the eight clusters. Phenotypic correlations revealed that all pairs of traits were significantly related, with the highest correlation registered between stem diameter and resistance to aphid attack (0.99). Forward selection ensures the simultaneous improvement of the three traits.

Short Communication: A comparison of stand structure, species diversity and aboveground biomass between natural and planted mangroves in Sikka, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 22: 1098-1103. The effectiveness of mangroves reforestation can be evaluated by comparing the stand dynamics of planted mangroves with natural mangroves in similar site conditions. This study investigated stand structure, species diversity and aboveground biomass between natural and planted mangroves in Sikka, East Nusa Tenggara. A field survey was conducted using quadrat transect method for vegetation measurement, especially related to species composition and its size distribution. Several parameters were recorded in field observation, including number of species, diameter, height, volume, and aboveground biomass. The stand structure of both mangroves was demonstrated by the distribution of diameter class while the species diversity was described using three parameters, i.e., richness, heterogeneity, and evenness. Moreover, the IVI of each species recorded was also calculated to understand the contribution of species in the mangrove ecosystems. The comparison of stand characteristics between natural and planted mangroves was examined by Mann-Whitney test and Spearman Correlation was also applied to understand the relationship between IVI and aboveground biomass. The results showed that the diameter and height between the natural and planted mangroves significantly differed (P0.05) even though there were some specific species which only observed in the natural or planted mangroves. The most superior species in the planted mangroves was Rhizophora mucronata (IVI = 96.99) while the most important plant in the natural mangroves was Sonneratia alba (IVI = 82.49). Our study found there was a significant correlation between IVI and aboveground biomass in which species with higher IVI indicated greater aboveground biomass. Based on these findings, restoration efforts of degraded mangroves in Sikka have been effective. The restoration, which has been conducted for almost three decades, has not only brought back its vegetation cover but also the functional traits of the mangrove stand to mimic with natural mangroves in the area.

The availability information about species composition and growth performance of mangrove forest are required to determine the best strategies for sustainable ecosystems management, particularly at the coastal area. This study aimed to quantify the number of species composition and growth performance of mangrove stand that established at the coast of Tanah Merah, East Nusa Tenggara. Forest inventory was conducted using nine permanent sampling plot which evenly distributed in every zonation of mangrove. Data were collected in each life stage of vegetation, namely seedling, sapling, pole, and tree. Several parameters were calculated to describe species composition, including important value index, richness, heterogeneity, and evenness. Four indicators were selected to assess the growth performance of mangrove stand in this location, i.e. mean diameter, average height, timber volume, and wood biomass. Results demonstrated the species composition of mangrove forest consisted of 9 different plants. The highest important value index of seedling was noted in A. marina (124.09) while the greatest important value index of sapling, pole, and tree were recorded in S. alba by approximately 86.57, 130.01, 118.58 respectively. This location had low level of richness (1.22) and heterogeneity (0.88) but having high level of evenness (0.99). The mean diameter and height of mangrove stand in this area was 15.2 cm and 8.3 m with an average timber volume and wood biomass around 90.7 m3 ha-1 and 65.1 Mg ha-1 respectively. Based on these findings, we suggested to conduct enrichment planting for improving plant biodiversity of mangrove forest at the coast of Tanah Merah.

Biodiversitas 21: 4291-4300. The capability of community forests for offsetting carbon emissions highly depends on their biomass production. Unfortunately, the measurement of tree biomass in community forests using a destructive method is expensive and time-consuming. It is also almost impossible to conduct this method for all trees in the observation area. Therefore, the development of allometric equations is essential to support tree biomass estimation in community forests. This study was designed to construct specific models for predicting individual tree biomass in community forests, located in Madiun, Indonesia. We destructively sampled approximately 120 trees from four different species (30 trees for each species), i.e., Falcataria moluccana, Melia azedarach, Swietenia macrophylla, and Tectona grandis. For every tree sample, the measurement of biomass was conducted in each tree’s component, namely roots, stem, branches, and leaves. The allometric equations were developed with regression analysis using predictor variables, like diameter at breast height (D), squared diameter at breast height combined with tree height (D2H), as well as D and H separately. Results found that for four species, the mean biomass in the stem was 50.3%, followed by branches 25.4%, roots 15.9%, and leaves 8.3%. The best equation for estimating biomass in every component and total of four species was different. However, our study showed that the equation lnŶ = -3.037 + 1.430 lnD + 1.684 was reliable to estimate total individual tree biomass of four species in the surveyed area since this model had accuracy of 90.8%. Referring to these findings, we recommended the utilization of an allometric equation as an alternative method for facilitating more efficient biomass measurement in the community forests.

A hybrid approach of remote sensing for mapping vegetation biodiversity in a tropical rainforest. Biodiversitas 21: 3946-3953. Vegetation biodiversity is one of the most important indicators to evaluate the sustainability of tropical rainforest. It is commonly described by three essential variables, i.e. richness, heterogeneity, and evenness. That information is frequently collected from periodic forest inventory using terrestrial method. However, this effort needs a long-time consuming, high cost, and almost impossible to implement in the area of tropical rainforest with hard accessibility. This study investigates the potential of remote sensing as an alternative method for mapping vegetation biodiversity in a tropical rainforest. A hybrid approach of remote sensing using medium and high-resolution images was developed to recognize the attributes of vegetation biodiversity by considering three parameters derived from remote sensing data, including canopy density (C), crown diameter (D), and tree density (N). The use of a medium resolution image aimed to categorize vegetation density using Modified Soil-Adjusted Value Index (MSAVI) while a high-resolution image was utilized to acquire a more detailed spectrum for determining C, D, and N in every class of vegetation density. The relationship between C, D, N, and richness, heterogeneity, evenness was explained using hierarchical cluster analysis. Our study discovered the attributes of vegetation biodiversity in a tropical rainforest could be potentially recognized by combining C, D, and N as predictor variables.

Local indigenous strategy to rehabilitate and conserve mangrove ecosystem in the southeastern Gulf of Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 21: 1250-1257. The existence of local communities around mangrove ecosystems plays essential role to support the effort of conservation programs in this area. This study is aimed to investigate a set of situation faced by local communities in the southeastern Gulf of Kupang (SGK), East Nusa Tenggara Province which led to the rehabilitation of once degraded mangrove forests in SGK and the strategies to conserve the recovered mangrove forests. A case study approach was developed using purposive sampling to collect information regarding the historical situation of mangrove forests in SGK. Further, remote sensing method using multi-temporal observation data was used to investigate the changes in mangrove cover from 1994 to 2019. This study revealed that a series of situations became the fundamental of the success in retaining the existence of mangrove ecosystems in SGK. First, the negative impacts of mangrove degradation affected the communities badly in relation to their livelihoods in fisheries and marine sector as well as other environmental services. Then, this situation led to the emergent of a local champion to initiate mangrove rehabilitation efforts which firstly did not get attention from most of the communities. After some initial successes, the efforts of the local champion was then followed by other members of communities, triggering a bigger scale of mangrove rehabilitation. Having the mangrove recovered, the communities set of highly strict local indigenous rules in which every indigenous people who conducting illegal logging in the mangroves would be expelled from the village, while a large fine was given for outside people who did the similar action. Currently, more than 90% of respondents have understood the benefits of mangroves and derived advantages from it, particularly in improving their prosperity and security. The results of the success of mangrove rehabilitation and conservation in SGK was confirmed by the increasing extent of mangrove vegetation using remote sensing data. The case study of rehabilitation and conservation in SGK provided valuable learning for communities in other areas.

Social welfare and food security become essential issues of forest management in Java. Agroforestry development have a potential to tackle these both issues without sacrifing the forest sustainability. The best agroforestry system should integrate the following three aspects: production, ecological, and social sustainabilities. This study aimed to identify the best agroforestry system that are established in plantation forest area, in Banyumas Forest Management Unit. Four different agroforestry systems were evaluated i.e. Teak, Pine, Cajuput, and Clonal Teak patterns. Each agroforestry system has different intercropping area based on their initial spacing of woody plant. The analytical hierarchy process method and followed by multi criteria analysis were used to determine the best agroforestry system. The proposed indicators of production aspect were timber forest product and non timber forest product. Meanwhile, the defined parameters of ecological aspect were plant biodiversity, microclimate, as well as soil and water conservation. The indicators of social aspect were market network, adoptability, and manageability. The result indicated that the weight for production, ecological, and social sustainabilities aspects were 0.43; 0.14; 0.43, respectively. This study revealed the best agroforestry system that can integrate the balance of production, ecological, and social sustainabilities aspects was Clonal Teak pattern (2.39). The next position was occupied by Teak pattern (2.08) and then followed by Pine pattern (2.06). The Cajuput pattern, however, was the last position (1.15), and therefore it was not recommended for agroforestry system in this area.

Sifat kimia tanah berperan penting dalam mendukung pertumbuhan dan perkembangan tanaman. Sifat kimia tanah dipengaruhi oleh tipe penggunaan lahan dan jenis vegetasi di atasnya. Perbedaan sifat kimia tanah dapat berpengaruh terhadap laju pertumbuhan tanaman sehingga menghasilkan variasi tingkat produktivitas. Penelitian ini mengkaji variasi sifat kimia tanah sebagai dampak pengembangan sistem agroforestri di hutan tanaman kayu putih. Lokasi penelitian terletak di Resort Pengelolaan Hutan Gubugrubuh, Kabupaten Gunungkidul. Sampel tanah dikumpulkan dari 3 petak yang menjadi prioritas penanaman kayu putih yaitu petak 75, petak 78, dan petak 80. Sampel tanah diambil dari lapisan permukaan pada kedalaman 0-15 cm. Indikator sifat kimia tanah yang diuji meliputi pH tanah, C-organik, N-total, P-tersedia, K-total, dan kapasitas pertukaran kation (KPK). Perbandingan sifat kimia tanah dari setiap petak dianalisis menggunakan metode One Way ANOVA (α=0,05) dan dilanjutkan HSD Tukey (α=0,05). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan kemasaman tanah pada setiap petak termasuk kategori agak masam dengan pH 6,00-6,50. Kandungan C-organik bervariasi antara 1,67-3,30%. Nilai N-total berkisar antara 0,13-0,18% sedangkan P-tersedia mencapai 1,50-6,50 ppm. Kadar K-total dan KPK termasuk kategori rendah dengan rentang nilai masing-masing 0,07-0,38 cmolc/kg dan 6,89-13,66 cmolc/kg. Soil chemical properties play important roles to support plant growth. It determines the nutrient availability which is required by the plant. This study aimed to identify the influence of soil chemical properties on cajuput stand growth. It was conducted in Forest Resort Gubugrubuh, Gunungkidul District. Data collection was undertaken in 3 sites that became the priority sites of cajuput establishment, namely site 75, site 78, and site 80. It was divided into soil sample collection and cajuput stand measurement. The soil sample was collected from surface layer at depth of 0-15 cm. Afterward, it was tested in the laboratory for soil pH, soil organic carbon, total nitrogen, available phosphorus, total potassium, and cation exchange capacity (CEC). The measurement of cajuput stand was carried out by N-trees sampling. The variable of the stand was described by diameter and basal area. Comparison of soil chemical properties and cajuput stand growth from each site were analyzed using One Way ANOVA (α=0.05) followed by HSD Tukey (α=0.05). Furthermore, we used Stepwise Regression (α=0.05) to identify the influence of soil chemical properties on cajuput stand growth.
