2. Exploring the structure of Xe isotopes in A ~ 130 region: Single particle and collective excitations

Abstract

High and medium spin structures of 130,131Xe have been studied using α-induced fusion-evaporation reaction and the Indian National Gamma Array (INGA) coupled with a digital data acquisition system. Various new band structures and near yrast levels of 131Xe have been established. The multipolarities of the observed transitions have been assigned on the basis of the DCO ratios and the polarization asymmetry measurements. Band structures based on 1-quasi-particle (qp), 3-qp configurations have been observed. A new Magnetic Rotational (MR) band based on 5-qp configuration has also been established in 131Xe. The MR band has been interpreted in terms of shears mechanism with principal axis cranking (SPAC) calculations. Shell Model calculations are carried out to describe the non yrast states of 131Xe above the 11/2− isomer. New excited states have also been identified in 130Xe, produced in the same reaction.

Abstract

An atomic clock based on the measurement of the intrinsic width of K x-ray lines has been used to obtain evidence of long-lived fission of the highly excited plutonium nuclei produced in the fusion of 4He+238U at E(4He)Lab=60 MeV. The mean fission time of the long-lived fission could be obtained from the increase of the intrinsic width of plutonium K x-ray line using quantum energy-time uncertainty principle. The presence of long-lived fission (mean fission time >1×10-18 s) has been found and the fluorescence yield per fission event shows that most of the fission events are slow (~10-18 s).

Abstract

In this work, decay spectroscopy of neutron-rich 43K has been performed at the Radioactive Ion Beam (RIB) facility at Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre (VECC), Kolkata by producing it with an 18-MeV alpha beam on 40Ar gas target. The beam was delivered from the K130 Cyclotron and the gas jet recoil transport system was used to move the products to a low-background site. The β-feeding intensities were measured by both high resolution γ-ray spectroscopy and total absorption γ-ray spectroscopy methods in order to address mainly the anomalies (if any) in the feeding to ΔJ ≥ 1 levels reported earlier. The decay half-life of 43K was also measured to be 22.4(1) hrs.

Abstract

The high-spin states in 197Tl were studied by populating them using the 197Au(α, 4n)197 Tl reaction at 48 MeV of beam energy. γ−γ coincidence data were taken using a combination of clover, LEPS (low energy photon spectrometer) and single crystal HPGe detectors. The polarization and DCO measurements were performed for definite spin and parity assignment of the excited states. The πi13/2 intruder state has been identified for the first time in this nucleus. The total Routhian surface calculations have been performed to study the shape and deformation of 197Tl for different configurations.

Abstract

Resistive heating and mechanical rolling methods have been employed to prepare isotopically enriched thin target foils of 116Sn (~380 \mu g/cm2), 124Sn(~400 \mu g/cm2) and thicker foils of 112Sn (1.7 mg/cm2),120Sn (1.6 mg/cm2),respectively. Preparation of enriched targets with small amount of material, selection of releasing agent for thin targets and separation of deposited material insolvent were among the several challenges while fabrication of the thin targets. Uniformity of the targets has been measured using 241Am {\alpha}-source. NaCl has been used as releasing agent in preparation of the thin targets. These targets have been successfully used in nuclear physics experiments at VECC.

Abstract

The excited states in the odd-$A$ $^{197}$Tl nucleus have been studied by populating them using the $^{197}$Au($\alpha$, 4$n$)$^{197}$Tl reaction at the beam energy of 48 MeV. The $\gamma-\gamma$ coincidence data were taken using a combination of clover, LEPS and single crystal HPGe detectors. Precise spin and parity assignments of the excited states have been done through the polarization and the DCO measurements. Abstract

Inclusive energy spectra of the complex fragments (3 $\leq$ Z $\leq$ 5) emitted in the reactions $^{12}$C (77 MeV)+ $^{28}$Si, $^{11}$B (64 MeV)+ $^{28}$Si and $^{12}$C (73 MeV)+ $^{27}$Al (all having the same excitation energy of $ \sim$ 67 MeV), have been measured in the angular range of 10$^\circ$ $\lesssim \theta_{lab} \lesssim$ 60$^\circ$. The fully energy damped (fusion-fission) and the partially energy damped (deep inelastic) components of the fragment energy spectra have been extracted. It has been found that the yields of the fully energy damped fragments for all the above reactions are in conformity with the respective statistical model predictions. The time scales of various deep inelastic fragment emissions have been extracted from the angular distribution data. The angular momentum dissipation in deep inelastic collisions has been estimated from the data and it has been found to be close to the corresponding sticking limit value., Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures

Abstract

The 1p transfer channel in the $^{27}$Al($^{12}$C, $^{11}$B)$^{28}$Si reaction has been studied at E$_{lab}$ = 73, 81 and 85 MeV. The finite range distorted wave Born approximation calculations have been performed using phenomenological optical model potential to analyze the angular distributions for 3 transitions populating the 0.0, 1.78 and 4.62 MeV states of $^{28}$Si and 2 transitions populating the 2.12 and 4.44 MeV states of $^{11}$B via the $^{27}$Al($^{12}$C, $^{11}$B)$^{28}$Si reaction. The spectroscopic strengths as well as spectroscopic factors have been extracted for all the five states. Abstract

International audience; Low-lying negative parity states in 131Xe were studied following an α-induced reaction at VECC, Kolkata. The unfavoured signature partner of νh11/2 band has been identified with firm spin-parity assignment. The S(I) value is found to be large and comparable in magnitude with that reported in 127Xe. The detailed results along with the theoretical calculations under the framework of particlerotor model will be presented.

Abstract

The abundance of heavy elements above iron through the rapid neutron capture process or r-process is intimately related to the competition between neutron capture and $\beta$ decay rates, which ultimately depends on the binding energy of atomic nuclei. The well-known Bethe-Weizsacker semi-empirical mass formula describes the binding energy of ground states in nuclei with temperatures of T~0 MeV, where the nuclear symmetry energy saturates between 23-26 MeV. Here we find a larger saturation energy of ~30 MeV for nuclei at T~0.7-1.3 MeV, which corresponds to the typical temperatures where seed elements are created during the cooling down of the ejecta following neutron-star mergers and collapsars. This large symmetry energy yields a reduction of the binding energy per nucleon for neutron-rich nuclei; hence, the close in of the neutron dripline, where nuclei become unbound. This finding constrains exotic paths in the nucleosynthesis of heavy elements -- as supported by microscopic calculations of radiative neutron-capture rates -- and further supports the universal origin of heavy elements, as inferred from the abundances in extremely metal-poor stars and meteorites.

Abstract

International audience; The excited states in the transitional nucleus Xe131 have been populated by using α-induced fusion-evaporation reaction and the de-exciting γ rays were detected with the Compton suppressed clover detector setup of the Indian National Gamma Array coupled to digital data acquisition system. The existing level structure of Xe131 has been significantly extended with the observation and placement of 72 new γ-ray transitions. The use of light-ion (α) beam helped to identify several new band structures in Xe131 with different quasiparticle (qp) configurations. The multipolarities of the observed γ rays have been determined on the basis of the directional correlation from oriented states ratio and polarization asymmetry measurements. The yrast negative-parity band has been confirmed up to 35/2− spin and the highly nonyrast signature partner of this band has been identified for the first time. The positive-parity band, based on the 3/2+ ground state, has been extended up to 23/2+ with the observation of a signature inversion, which signifies a pair of particle alignment around the spin of 15/2 ℏ. A dipole band, consisting of M1 transitions has been identified and assigned a 5-qp configuration. A new band structure built on a 3-qp 23/2+ state has been observed with a large signature splitting. A comparison in the isotopic and isotonic chains reveals the transitional nature of the N=77 nuclei. Total Routhian surface calculations have been performed to understand the structure of Xe131 associated with different configurations.
