Abstract

The 2004 tsunami affected the South Andaman coast, causing it to experience dynamic changes in the coastal geomorphology and making the region vulnerable. We focus on pre-and post-tsunami shoreline and land use–land cover changes from 2004, 2005, and 2022 to analyze the dynamic change in hazard. We used General Bathymetric Chart of the Ocean (GEBCO) data to calculate run-up [m], arrival times [min], and inundation [m] at a few locations using three tsunamigenic earthquake source parameters, namely the 2004 Sumatra, 1941 North Andaman, and 1881 Car Nicobar earthquakes. The Digital Shoreline Analysis System is used for the shoreline change estimates. Landsat data are used to calculate shoreline and land use–land cover (LULC) change in five classes, namely built-up areas, forests, inundation areas, croplands, and water bodies during the above period. We examine the correlation between the LULC changes and the dynamic change in shoreline due to population flux, infrastructural growth, and gross state domestic product growth. The Indian industry estimates the Andaman and Nicobar Islands losses exceeded INR 10 billion during 2004, which would today see a 5-fold increase in economic loss due to a doubling of built-up area, a 3-fold increase in tourist inflow, and population density growth. The unsustainable decline in the forest cover, mangroves, and cropland would affect sustainability during a disaster despite coastal safety measures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

34. Exploring Nature’s Treasure to Inhibit β-Barrel Assembly Machinery of Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria: An In silico Approach

Abstract

Background: The development of antibiotic resistance in bacteria is a matter of global concern due to the exceptionally high morbidity and mortality rates. The outer membrane of most gram-negative bacteria acts as a highly efficient barrier and blocks the entry of the majority of antibiotics, making them ineffective. The Bam complex, β-barrel assembly machinery complex, contains five subunits (BamA, B, C, D, E), which plays a vital role in folding and inserting essential outer membrane proteins into the membrane, thus maintaining outer membrane integrity. BamA and BamD are essential subunits to fulfill this purpose. Therefore, targeting this complex to treat antibiotic resistance can be an incredibly effective approach. Natural bacterial pigments like violacein, phytochemicals like withanone, semasin, and several polyphenols have often been reported for their effective antibiotic, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and anti-carcinogenic properties. Objective: Structural inhibition of the Bam complex by natural compounds can provide safe and effective treatment for antibiotic resistance by targeting outer membrane integrity. Methods: In-silico ADMET and molecular docking analysis was performed with ten natural compounds, namely violacein, withanone, sesamin, resveratrol, naringenin, quercetin, epicatechin, gallic acid, ellagic acid, and galangin, to analyse their inhibitory potential against the Bam complex. Results: Docking complexes of violacein gave high binding energies of -10.385 and -9.46 Kcal/mol at C and D subunits interface and at A subunits of the Bam complex, respectively. Conclusion: Henceforth, violacein can be an effective antibiotic against to date reported resistant gram-negative bacteria by inhibiting the Bam complex of their outer membrane. Therefore the urgent need for exhaustive research in this concern is highly demanded.

Abstract

Since high-level events in images (e.g. “dinner”, “motorcycle stunt”, etc.) may not be directly correlated with their visual appearance, low-level visual features do not carry enough semantics to classify such events satisfactorily. This paper explores a fully compositional approach for event based image retrieval which is able to overcome this shortcoming. Furthermore, the approach is fully scalable in both adding new events and new primitives. Using the Pascal VOC 2007 dataset, our contributions are the following: (i) We apply the Faceted Analysis-Synthesis Theory (FAST) to build a hierarchy of 228 high-level events. (ii) We show that rule-based classifiers are better suited for compositional recognition of events than SVMs. In addition, rule-based classifiers provide semantically meaningful event descriptions which help bridging the semantic gap. (iii) We demonstrate that compositionality enables unseen event recognition: we can use rules learned from non-visual cues, together with object detectors to get reasonable performance on unseen event categories. Abstract

We describe a patient with a rare combination of coronary artery disease and congenital heart disease. The patient underwent successful complex and multivessel coronary angioplasty, balloon pulmonary valvuloplasty by the Inoue balloon and transcatheter closure of an atrial septal defect in a staged manner. It is technically feasible and safe to perform multiple interventions as an alternative to open heart surgery.
