Abstract Van der Waals heterostructures are set as strong contenders for post‐CMOS quantum materials engineering. A major step for their systematic exploration and exploitation of technological component demonstrators resides in their eased large‐scale design. In this direction, the growth of artificial van der Waals 2D superlattices is presented here such as (MoS2/WS2)n, (WS2/WSe2)n, and (MoS2/WSe2)n with unit cells repetitions reaching n > 10. The fabrication of these materials is enabled by a fully automated in‐situ pulsed laser deposition (PLD) tool. This approach provides cm2 scale homogeneous superlattices with on‐demand material parameters tailoring (layer number, order, and composition). The process is rapid and simple compared to manual pickup exfoliation methods or to sequential transfers of single layers grown by techniques such as chemical vapor deposition, allowing a large repetition of the unit cells in a “mille‐feuille” cake configuration. The computational exploration of this family of superlattice materials sheds light on the potential for optoelectronic property design by shaping the band‐structure landscape while taking into account the influential effects induced by proximity. Overall, this large‐area approach is proposed as an entry point for the systematic design of complex van der Waals heterostructures.

Abstract Background Nonthyroidal illness syndrome (NTIS) can result in thyroid function test alterations that mimic hypothyroidism. The duration of NTIS‐induced changes in dogs is not well‐described. Objectives Document alterations in thyroid function tests during NTIS and recovery, and the time necessary for their resolution. Animals From 103 dogs sampled, 25 euthyroid dogs with acute, resolvable illness having a low serum total thyroxine (TT4) concentration on admission were analyzed. Methods Prospective observational study. Serum TT4 concentration was measured in 103 dogs within 4 hours of admission. If below the reference interval (RI), subsequent serum samples were obtained every 24 hours from admission until discharge (acute phase) and at 2 weeks and 4 weeks after discharge (recovery phase). Serum samples were submitted for batch measurement of serum TT4, free thyroxine (fT4), total 3,5,3′‐triiodothyronine (TT3), and thyroid‐stimulating hormone (TSH) concentrations. Results In the cohort of dogs analyzed, serum TT4, TT3, and fT4 concentrations were below the RI in 100%, 80%, and 16% at admission; 20%, 80%, and 0% at discharge; 4%, 8%, and 0% at 2 weeks; and 0%, 0%, and 0% at 4 weeks, respectively. Serum TSH concentration was within the RI in 100% at admission and discharge, and above the RI in 4% and 12% at 2 weeks and 4 weeks, respectively. Conclusions and Clinical Importance Naturally occurring NTIS in dogs induces alterations in thyroid function tests during acute illness and recovery. Measurement of serum TT4 concentration 2 to 4 weeks after discharge or serum fT4 concentration by ED during illness is recommended for accurate assessment of thyroid function in acutely ill dogs.

Resumo Teoria da mente e empatia são habilidades sociocognitivas implicadas na compreensão do mundo social e elaboração de respostas em contextos sociais. Entretanto, é preciso ainda avançar na precisão como as pesquisas apresentam esses constructos e as relações entre eles. O objetivo deste estudo foi realizar uma revisão de escopo a respeito das relações conceituais apontadas entre teoria da mente e empatia em pesquisas que investigam diferenças socioindividuais em adultos típicos, bem como organizar essas produções em função de categorias temáticas. Foram analisados 62 artigos, sendo observados cinco diferentes modelos de articulações conceituais entre teoria da mente e empatia e três núcleos de produção temática, ligados ao comportamento social, às variações fisiológicas na vida cotidiana, e, às variações cognitivas, afetivas e sociais. Discutem-se também avanços e limitações nessa área, apontando-se tanto para uma profícua produção como para a necessidade de se avançar na construção de parâmetros mais precisos nessa área.

Abstract Little is known about the signaling network responsible for the organization of the perinuclear actin cap, a recently identified structure holding unique roles in the regulation of nuclear shape and cell directionality. In cancer cells expressing a constitutively active MET, we show a rearrangement of the actin cap filaments, which crash into perinuclear patches associated with spherical nuclei, meandering cell motility and inactivation of the mechano-transducer YAP1. MET ablation is sufficient to reactivate YAP1 and restore the cap, leading to enhanced directionality and flattened nuclei. Consistently, the introduction of a hyperactive MET in normal epithelial cells, enhances nuclear height and alters the cap organization, as also confirmed by TEM analysis. Finally, the constitutively active YAP1 mutant YAP5SA is able to overcome the effects of oncogenic MET. Overall, our work describes a signaling axis empowering MET-mediated YAP1 dampening and actin cap misalignment, with implications for nuclear shape and cell motility.

Mechanical signals from the extracellular matrix are crucial in guiding cellular behavior. Two-dimensional hydrogel substrates for cell cultures serve as exceptional tools for mechanobiology studies because they mimic the biomechanical and adhesive characteristics of natural environments. However, the interdisciplinary knowledge required to synthetize and manipulate these biomaterials typically restricts their widespread use in biological laboratories, which may not have the material science expertise or specialized instrumentation. To address this, we propose a scalable method that requires minimal setup to produce 2D hydrogel substrates with independent modulation of the rigidity and adhesiveness within the range typical of natural tissues. In this method, norbornene-terminated 8-arm polyethylene glycol is stoichiometrically functionalized with RGD peptides and crosslinked with a di-cysteine terminated peptide via a thiol–ene click reaction. Since the synthesis process significantly influences the final properties of the hydrogels, we provide a detailed description of the chemical procedure to ensure reproducibility and high throughput results. We demonstrate examples of cell mechanosignaling by monitoring the activation state of the mechanoeffector proteins YAP/TAZ. This method effectively dissects the influence of biophysical and adhesive cues on cell behavior. We believe that our procedure will be easily adopted by other cell biology laboratories, improving its accessibility and practical application.

Life expectancy and overall function of amputated patients have improved significantly over the last few decades; for this reason, amputees are more exposed to primary or secondary degenerative disease of the hip, requiring total hip arthroplasty (THA) surgery. However, during training, not all the surgeons acquire adequate skills to manage these patients, and only a few studies and case reports describe technical pearls and outcomes of THA in patients with ipsilateral lower limb amputation, either above or below the knee. The objective of this narrative review is to present current evidence and surgical tips for performing THA in ipsilateral amputated patients, with a focus on the differences between patients with above- (AKA) and below-knee amputation (BKA). We reviewed manuscripts in major scientific databases, cross-referencing to retrieve adjunctive manuscripts, and summarized all relevant cases. We found 17 manuscripts, spanning 70 years of literature, collecting a total of 39 patients who underwent THA on an ipsilateral amputated limb: 13 AKA, 23 BKA, and 3 through-knee-amputation (TKA). The cohort primarily consists of patients with post-traumatic hip arthritis, often associated with sequelae such as fractures to other bones, soft tissue compromise and heterotopic calcifications. Managing with amputated patients requires careful planning, which includes the study of the residual bone, muscle anatomy, and the level of femoral amputation, as these factors present significant surgical challenges, especially in patients without a knee joint. In dealing with the post-traumatic and multi-comorbidity patients, rehabilitation goals should be considered prior to surgery and should drive the surgical strategy. We found that BKA patients typically have high functional demands, necessitating precise positioning of the components and an aggressive post-operative physiotherapy regimen to avoid unsatisfactory outcomes. AKA patients, on the other hand, often present with altered anatomy, and typically require more surgical instruments and expertise to achieve intraoperative dislocation of the hip joint.

Abstract Erroneous thyroid function test results can occur because of drugs that alter thyroid hormone physiology in one or more aspects, including synthesis, secretion, distribution, and metabolism. Research since publication of the last review in the Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine (JVIM) 20 years ago has evaluated the effects of amiodarone, zonisamide, inhalant anesthetics, clomipramine, trilostane, and toceranib on thyroid function tests in the dog. In addition, recent work on the effects of glucocorticoids, sulfonamides, phenobarbital, and nonsteroidal anti‐inflammatory drugs will be reviewed. Awareness of these effects is necessary to avoid misdiagnosis of hypothyroidism and unnecessary treatment.

Abstract Background The pathogenesis of gallbladder (GB) mucoceles in dogs is unknown. It has been proposed that hyperlipidemia could impair GB motility and contribute to GB mucocele formation. Hypothesis/Objectives The objective of this study was to compare GB motility in dogs with hyperlipidemia to control dogs using ultrasonography. We hypothesized that hyperlipidemic dogs will have decreased GB motility compared with controls. Animals Twenty‐six hyperlipidemic and 28 healthy, age‐matched control dogs were prospectively enrolled. Methods Cholesterol and triglyceride concentrations were measured in all dogs. Hyperlipidemia was defined as hypercholesterolemia (>332 mg/dL) and/or hypertriglyceridemia (>143 mg/dL) using a biochemical analyzer. Ultrasound was performed before feeding, and 60 and 120 minutes after ingestion of a high fat diet. Gallbladder volumes (GBV) and ejection fractions (EF) were calculated. Results Hyperlipidemic dogs had significantly larger GBVs (ml/kg) before feeding and 60 minutes after feeding of 1.2 (0.4‐7.5; P = .008) and 0.6 (0.1‐7.2; P = .04) compared with controls 0.6 (0.2‐2.6) and 0.4 (0.1‐1.9), respectively. Severely hyperlipidemic dogs had significantly larger GBV at baseline, 60 minutes, and 120 minutes of 1.7 (0.6‐7.5; P = .03), 1.3 (0.4‐7.2; P = .02), and 1.3 (0.2‐8.2; P = .04), respectively compared with mildly hyperlipidemic dogs. EFs at 60 and 120 minutes between controls, hyperlipidemic, and severely hyperlipidemic were all 0.3 at 60 minutes and 0.5, 0.3, and 0.3 at 120 minutes, respectively which were not statistically different. Conclusions and Clinical Importance Hyperlipidemia leads to GB distention in dogs which could lead to retention of bile and gallbladder disease.

Teoria da mente é a habilidade sociocognitiva de inferir pensamentos, sentimentos e intenções. É uma habilidade que sustenta as relações sociais e parece particularmente relevante para o exercício de certas atividades que estão ligadas à ‘leitura do outro’, como a prática de profissionais que exercem o cuidado em equipamentos de saúde, como ocorre nos Centros de Atenção Psicossocial. Este estudo teórico teve o objetivo de analisar a importância das habilidades sociocognitivas para o trabalho em saúde, especialmente na saúde mental, a fim de identificar e discutir possíveis fatores que podem ter impacto na inferência que os profissionais fazem a respeito do que os usuários do serviço estão pensando, sentindo ou querendo. A análise permitiu observar as formas pelas quais a teoria da mente pode se tornar importante ferramenta para o profissional no processo terapêutico. Além disso, foi possível identificar que, no formato em que tem funcionado atualmente, o trabalho em Centros de Atenção Psicossocial tem exposto o profissional a diversos estressores que parecem produzir efeitos em suas habilidades sociocognitivas, podendo prejudicar não apenas sua saúde como também o exercício do cuidado.

After the downfall of the monarchy in Rome some patricians gentes established a new aristocratic regime, this new-born republic saw immediately a tough beginning starting a series of war with its neighbours, such as the Sabin, the Etruscans and the Latin League. Among all of this rivals the city of Rome started a collaboration with the Latin League after a glorious victory at the Lake Regillus and the foedus assianum. From now on the ancient historians saw the history of the Latins as the one of a subordinate people and Rome as the only power in the region. Now a days the critics diverge from this interpretation but never with a strong position against Rome, who is seen on equal terms with the Latins but hardly ever as a subordinate partner in the alliance. Therefore, this paper will try to cast a light on the power dynamic between the two partners by analysing some passages of our sources regarding the auxiliary forces enlisted in the Roman army.

Abstract Proximal femoral replacement (PFR) is a well-established treatment for neoplasia of the proximal femur. The use of this surgical technique for non-neoplastic conditions has increased over the years. We carried out a systematic review of the literature to study the indications, complications, and functional results when PFR is used for non-neoplastic conditions. Twenty-seven studies were included in the review with a total of 828 PFRs with a mean follow-up of 50 months (range 1–225 months). The main indications were infection (28%), periprosthetic fracture (27%), aseptic loosening (22%), and fracture (16%). The rate of reoperation was 20.3% overall. The overall revision rate was 15.4%. The main complications were dislocation (10.2%) and infection (7.3%). After 2010, the rates of reoperation (25.5% versus 18.2%), loosening (9.4% versus 3.2%), and dislocation (15.7% versus 7.9%) were lower than before 2010. The 30-day mortality ranged from 0% to 9%. The hip function scores improved post-surgery. In conclusion, the use of PFR in non-neoplastic conditions remains a marginal tool, associated with low direct mortality and high complication rates, but we expect its use to increase in the near future.

Introduction For a long time, major surgical defects after oncological surgery have always been challenging cases for surgeons in terms of wound healing and covering technique. Objectives To demonstrate the feasibility of supraclavicular artery flap (SCAF) in the reconstruction of surgical defects in those “fragile” patients undergoing oncological surgery who could not possibly have endured the timeframes involved in using microvascular free flaps. Methods Between January 2018 and January 2019, at the Azienda Socio Sanitaria Territoriale (ASST) Bergamo Est Hospital (Bergamo, Italy), we reported the cases of 11 patients in whom the SCAF was used for surgical reconstruction after oncological surgery in our Otolaryngology Department. The median age of the 11 patients was 68.7 years old. Results The SCAF has proved, in almost all 11 cases in which it was used, to be very reliable and, above all, easy and quick to make in those “fragile” patients without the need for further intervention. There was only one case in which the resection involved the auricle entirely and a small area of perimeatal bone exposure occurred, which, anyway, healed by secondary intention. Conclusion The SCAF is an extremely versatile flap for head and neck surgery to be considered especially for fragile and vulnerable patients who cannot undergo prolonged surgical time. Moreover, this technique has also shown high feasibility in small hospitals where there is not a plastic surgery department and the surgeon may face the difficulty of practicing surgical reconstruction after enlarged resection.

Abstract In spite of tremendous advances made in the comprehension of mechanotransduction, implementation of mechanobiology assays remains challenging for the broad community of cell biologists. Hydrogel substrates with tunable stiffness are essential tool in mechanobiology, allowing to investigate the effects of mechanical signals on cell behavior. A bottleneck that slows down the popularization of hydrogel formulations for mechanobiology is the assessment of their stiffness, typically requiring expensive and sophisticated methodologies in the domain of material science. Here we overcome such barriers offering the reader protocols to set-up and interpret two straightforward, low cost and high-throughput tools to measure hydrogel stiffness: static macroindentation and micropipette aspiration. We advanced on how to build up these tools and on the underlying theoretical modeling. Specifically, we validated our tools by comparing them with leading techniques used for measuring hydrogel stiffness (atomic force microscopy, uniaxial compression and rheometric analysis) with consistent results on PAA hydrogels or their modification. In so doing, we also took advantage of YAP/TAZ nuclear localization as biologically validated and sensitive readers of mechanosensing, all in all presenting a suite of biologically and theoretically proven protocols to be implemented in most biological laboratories to approach mechanobiology.

Abstract Background Hyperthyroid cats might have a predisposition to arterial thrombus formation. The mechanism for thrombogenesis currently is unknown but could be associated with systemic hypercoagulability as seen in hyperthyroid humans. Objective Our purpose was to evaluate markers of hemostasis in hyperthyroid cats compared to healthy cats, and in hyperthyroid cats before and after radioactive iodine treatment (RIT). Animals Twenty‐five cats with hyperthyroidism and 13 healthy euthyroid cats >8 years of age. Methods Prothrombin time (PT), activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT), fibrinogen concentration, antithrombin (AT), D‐dimers, thrombin‐antithrombin complexes (TAT), von Willebrand Factor antigen (vWF : Ag), and activity of factors VIII and IX were measured. An echocardiogram was performed in all cats. Hemostatic markers and echocardiogram were evaluated again 6 to 9 months after successful RIT in 7 cats.
