Abstract

Examines construct validity and psychometric properties of the Multi-Attitude Suicide Tendency Scale in adolescent psychiatric inpatients. Confirmatory factor analysis provides support for the fit of the 28-item, four-factor model. Results of regression analyses reveal that high scores on the repulsion by life and the attraction to death subscales were useful in assessing the risk for suicide attempts. Abstract

A study of the validity of the Multi-Attitude Suicide Tendency scale (MAST) in a sample of 215 adolescents showed that MAST is an efficient method of estimating the degree of psychopathology and suicidal tendency in adolescents. The four-factor structure of the scale validated by the analysis included the attraction and repulsion of life and death. Correlational analyses supported the consistency of MAST subscales especially in issues such as hopelessness, suicidal ideation and negative self-evaluation.
