Global agricultural systems are increasingly moving towards organic farming to satisfy consumers’ increased environmental awareness. Yet, shortage of fertilizers and more frequent water stresses are challenging agricultural systems to minimize their environmental impact without compromising productivity and economic sustainability. This study discusses how greenhouse organic tomato production behaves when multiple eco-sustainable solutions are applied. In particular, organic tomato cultivation was supported by a specific biostimulant treatment that included a microbial solution, based on Rhizobium, which was distributed onto faba bean seeds; once a suitable fava bean biomass had been obtained, the plants were chopped and incorporated into the soil in order to release nitrogen. In the trials considered, microbial solutions reduced organic tomato production costs by 5 %. Considering that fertilization accounted for up to 7 % of total production costs, a large-scale preparation of the microbial solution could trigger significant economic savings. The Life-Cycle Assessment shows that organic tomatoes, with a lower yield, have a lower environmental impact than conventional production only for 7 of the 15 evaluated impact categories. Combined agro-technical growing solutions are economically viable in the presence of yields in organic compared to conventional, and their environmental impact is attractive in both scenarios.

The use of biostimulants consisting of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) has been rapidly expanding in horticulture in recent years. In the current study, a novel mix of six Bacillus sp. strains (B. subtilis, B. pumilus, B. megaterium, B. amyloliquefaciens, B. velezensis, B. licheniformis) was tested as a PGPR biostimulant in two experiments with zucchini squash (Cucurbita pepo L.). The first experiment took place in greenhouse soil in winter, while the second experiment was conducted in an open field during summer. In both experiments, seeds of the local landrace “Kompokolokytho” and the commercial hybrid “ARO-800” were either inoculated or non-inoculated with the PGPR biostimulant. The application of the six Bacillus sp. strains increased both the vegetative growth and the yield of zucchini squash, and these effects were associated with significantly higher shoot phosphorus levels in both experiments and both genotypes. Furthermore, at the end of the cultivation, the colony-forming units of Bacillus sp. were appreciably higher in plants originating from inoculated compared to non-inoculated seeds, indicating that the tested mix of Bacillus sp. can be successfully applied through seed inoculation. “ARO-800” produced more vegetative and fruit biomass than “Κompokolokytho” under greenhouse cropping conditions, while in the open field crop, both genotypes performed equally. Presumably, this response occurred because “ARO-800” did not express its full yield potential in the open field due to stress imposed by the high summer temperatures, while the local landrace, which is traditionally grown in open fields, may be more resilient to stress conditions frequently encountered in open fields.

In the current study, inoculation with plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) and grafting were tested as possible cultural practices that may enhance resilience of tomato to stress induced by combined water and nutrient shortage. The roots of tomato grown on perlite were either inoculated or not with PGPR, applying four different treatments. These were PGPR-T1, a mix of two Enterobacter sp. strains (C1.2 and C1.5); PGPR-T2, Paenibacillus sp. strain DN1.2; PGPR-T3, Enterobacter mori strain C3.1; and PGPR-T4, Lelliottia sp. strain D2.4. PGPR-treated plants were either self-grafted or grafted onto Solanum lycopersicum cv. M82 and received either full or 50% of their standard water, nitrogen, and phosphorus needs. The vegetative biomass of plants subjected to PGPR-T1 was not reduced when plants were cultivated under combined stress, while it was reduced by stress to the rest of the PGPR treatments. However, PGPR-T3 increased considerably plant biomass of non-stressed tomato plants than did all other treatments. PGPR application had no impact on fruit biomass, while grafting onto ’M82’ increased fruit production than did self-grafting. Metabolomics analysis in tomato leaves revealed that combined stress affects several metabolites, most of them already described as stress-related, including trehalose, myo-inositol, and monopalmitin. PGPR inoculation with E. mori strain C3.1 affected metabolites, which are important for plant/microbe symbiosis (myo-inositol and monopalmitin). The rootstock M82 did not affect many metabolites in plant leaves, but it clearly decreased the levels of malate and D-fructose and imposed an accumulation of oleic acid. In conclusion, PGPR are capable of increasing tomato tolerance to combined stress. However, further research is required to evaluate more strains and refine protocols for their application. Metabolites that were discovered as biomarkers could be used to accelerate the screening process for traits such as stress tolerance to abiotic and/or abiotic stresses. Finally, ‘M82’ is a suitable rootstock for tomato, as it is capable of increasing fruit biomass production.

In the current experiment, tomato (Solanum lycopersicum cv. Nostymi F1) was cultivated in an open hydroponic system under optimal or stress conditions caused by reducing the supply of nutrient solution by 35–40% and treated with biostimulants to test whether their application can increase crop resilience to combined shortage of nutrients and water. The four different biostimulant treatments were: (i) no biostimulant application, (ii) treatment with the protein-based biostimulants COUPÉ REGENERACIÓN Plus and PROCUAJE RADICULAR provided by EDYPRO, (iii) treatment with a novel biostimulant based on strigolactones, provided by STRIGOLAB and (iv) treatment with MAXICROP, a commercial product consisting of seaweed extracts. Combined stress significantly reduced NO3−, P, and K in the root zone of tomato plants. However, the application of the strigolactone-based biostimulant to stressed plants maintained NO3− in the root zone to similar levels with non-stressed plants during the first and third months of cultivation. The biostimulants did not increase the vegetative plant biomass at 70 and 120 days after transplanting (DAT). The strigolactone-based biostimulant increased early leaf area development (70 DAT) and early fruit production compared to untreated plants but had no effect on total tomato yield (120 DAT). Maxicrop also increased early fruit yield, while Edypro decreased early and total yield compared to the control plants, an effect ascribed to overdosing, as the application rate was that suggested for soil-grown crops, while the plants were cultivated on an inert substrate. Strigolactone-based biostimulant and Maxicrop could be further studied by testing multiple applications during the cropping period.

Every day, visually challenged people (VCP) face mobility restrictions and accessibility limitations. A short walk to a nearby destination, which for other individuals is taken for granted, becomes a challenge. To tackle this problem, we propose a novel visual perception system for outdoor navigation that can be evolved into an everyday visual aid for VCP. The proposed methodology is integrated in a wearable visual perception system (VPS). The proposed approach efficiently incorporates deep learning, object recognition models, along with an obstacle detection methodology based on human eye fixation prediction using Generative Adversarial Networks. An uncertainty-aware modeling of the obstacle risk assessment and spatial localization has been employed, following a fuzzy logic approach, for robust obstacle detection. The above combination can translate the position and the type of detected obstacles into descriptive linguistic expressions, allowing the users to easily understand their location in the environment and avoid them. The performance and capabilities of the proposed method are investigated in the context of safe navigation of VCP in outdoor environments of cultural interest through obstacle recognition and detection. Additionally, a comparison between the proposed system and relevant state-of-the-art systems for the safe navigation of VCP, focused on design and user-requirements satisfaction, is performed.
