USPIO conjugated with anti-CD133 antibodies (USPIO-CD133 Ab) that recognize the CD133 molecule, a cancer stem cell marker in a variety of cancers, was studied as a novel and potent agent for MRI contrast enhancement of tumor cells. Materials and methods: Anti-CD133 antibodies were used to conjugate with USPIO via interaction of streptavidin and biotin for in vivo labeling of CD133-positive cells in xenografted tumors and N-ethyl-N-nitrosourea (ENU)-induced brain tumors. The specific binding of USPIO-CD133 Ab to CD133-positive tumor cells was subsequently detected by Prussian blue staining and MRI with T2-weighted, gradient echo and multiple echo recombined gradient echo images. In addition, the cellular toxicity of USPIO-CD133 Ab was determined by analyzing cell proliferation, apoptosis, and reactive oxygen species production. Results: USPIO-CD133 Ab specifically recognizes in vitro and labels CD133-positive cells, as validated using Prussian blue staining and MRI. The assays of cell proliferation, apoptosis, and reactive oxygen species production showed no significant differences in tumor cells with or without labeling of USPIO-CD133 Ab. In vivo imaging of CD133-positive cells was demonstrated by intravenous injection of USPIO-CD133 Ab in mice with HT29 xenografted tumors. The MRI of HT29 xenografts showed several clusters of hypotensive regions that correlated with CD133 expression and Prussian blue staining for iron. In rat, brain tumors induced by transplacental ENU mutagenesis, several clusters of hypointensive zones were observed in CD133-expressing brain tumors by MRI and intravenously administered USPIO-CD133 Ab. Conclusion: Combination of USPIO-CD133 Ab and MRI is valuable in recognizing CD133-expressing tumor cells in vitro, extracellularly labeling for cell tracking and detecting CD133-expressing tumors in xenografted tumors as well as ENU-induced rat brain tumors. The purpose of this paper is to describe a unique "eighth note" deformity of the autogenous radiocephalic fistula for hemodialysis and to retrospectively evaluate the efficacy and safety of its endovascular treatment. Over 3 years, a total of 808 patients and 558 autogenous radiocephalic fistulas were treated for vascular access dysfunction or thrombosis. These included 14 fistulas in 14 patients (9 men, 5 women; mean age, 58.2 +/- 2.8 years; range 27-79 years) whose fistulograms before treatment resembled a musical note, the eighth note. Endovascular treatment sought to remodel the deformed vascular access to a classic radiocephalic fistula and increase the number of cannulation sites available for hemodialysis. The technical and clinical success rates were each 92.8% (13/14). Fistula remodeling was successful in 13 patients. The postintervention primary patency was 100% at 90 days, 91.7 +/- 0.8% at 120 days, 78.6 +/- 13.9% at 180 days, 62.9 +/- 17.9% at 360 days, 31.4 +/- 24.0% at 540 days, and 0% at 720 days. The postintervention secondary patency was 100% at 90 days, 100% at 120 days, 100% at 180 days, 85.7 +/- 13.2% at 360 days, and 85.7 +/- 13.2% at 720 days. No major complications were noted. Minor complications were found in 71.4% of patients, all of which resolved spontaneously. In conclusion, endovascular treatment of fistulas with the eighth note deformity can effectively increase the number of available cannulation sites, facilitate fistula maturation, and facilitate thromboaspiration after fistula thrombosis. Pleurostomatid ciliates, as a highly diverse and widely distributed unicellular eukaryote group, play a crucial role in the cycling of nutrients and energy in microbial food webs. However, research on pleurostomatids remains insufficient, resulting in a paucity of molecular information and substantial gaps in knowledge of their phylogenetic relationships. In recent years, we investigated pleurostomatid diversity in various Chinese habitats, including their systematic relationships and taxonomic circumscriptions, which were comprehensively analyzed using an integrative morphomolecular approach. Results revealed that: (1) pleurostomatids can be categorized into two suborders, Protolitonotina subord. nov. and Amphileptina Jankowski, 1967; (2) Protolitonotina subord. nov. represents the ancestral pleurostomatid group and includes two genera, Protolitonotus and Heterolitonotus gen. nov. , characterized by right kineties progressively shortened along rightmost full kineties and absence of a left dorsolateral kinety; (3) Heterolitonotus gen. nov. represents an orphan lineage and is defined by an oral slit extending to its dorsal margin; (4) " Protolitonotus clampi " does not group with congeners but instead represents an orphan lineage, thus Novilitonotus gen. nov. is established to which P. clampi is transferred as Novilitonotus clampi comb. nov. ; (5) three new species, Apoamphileptus paraclaparedii sp. nov. , Heterolitonotus rex gen. nov., sp. nov. , and Loxophyllum apohelus sp. nov. , are described; and (6) helices 21es6a to 21es6d within the V4 region of small subunit ribosomal RNA (SSU rRNA) may serve as a useful tool for discriminating pleurostomatids. The evolutionary relationships among all main lineages of pleurostomatids are discussed and a key to the identification of pleurostomatid genera is provided.

Objective: To compare the efficacy of several local antibiotic regimens in preventing surgical site infection (SSI) in clean surgical wounds., Data Sources: The authors searched CNKI (China National Knowledge Infrastructure), the VIP (VIP information resource integration service platform), Wanfang Data knowledge service platform (WANFANG), SinoMed, Cochrane Library, EMBASE, and PubMed., Study Selection: A total of 20 randomized controlled trials published between January 1, 2000 and April 1, 2021 were included in this meta-analysis., Data Extraction: Authors extracted the name of the first author, publication date, country, type of surgery, follow-up time, mean age of participants, sample size of each group, interventions, outcome indicators, and study type from each article., Data Synthesis: The overall effectiveness of eight local managements in reducing the incidence of the SSI effect were compared through the SUCRA (surface under the cumulative ranking curve) probabilities. The results of a network meta-analysis demonstrated that gentamicin ointment (odds ratio [OR], 0.16; 95% CI, 0.04-0.60), mupirocin ointment (OR, 0.44; 95% CI, 0.21-0.94), and gentamicin soaking of the graft (OR, 0.63; 95% CI, 0.44-0.91) significantly reduced the incidence of SSI compared with control. Further, vancomycin soaking of the graft (86.7%) ranked first, followed by gentamicin ointment (81.1%), gentamicin irrigation (79.9%), mupirocin ointment (56.8%), triple antibiotic ointment (47.8%), gentamicin soaking of the graft (42.3%), and vancomycin powder (22.1%); ampicillin powder (17.8%) was the least effective drug., Conclusions: The findings indicate that local antibiotics combined with conventional antibiotics in the wound before wound closure are effective in reducing the incidence of SSI in clean surgical wounds. In the past 4 decades, many articles have reported on the effects of the piezoelectric effect on bone formation and the research progress of piezoelectric biomaterials in orthopedics. The purpose of this study is to comprehensively evaluate all existing research and latest developments in the field of bone piezoelectricity, and to explore potential research directions in this area. To assess the overall trend in this field over the past 40 years, this study comprehensively collected literature reviews in this field using a literature retrieval program, applied bibliometric methods and visual analysis using CiteSpace and R language, and identified and investigated publications based on publication year (1984-2022), type of literature, language, country, institution, author, journal, keywords, and citation counts. The results show that the most productive countries in this field are China, the United States, and Italy. The journal with the most publications in the field of bone piezoelectricity is the International Journal of Oral & Maxillofacial Implants, followed by Implant Dentistry. The most productive authors are Lanceros-Méndez S, followed by Sohn D.S. Further research on the results obtained leads to the conclusion that the research direction of this field mainly includes piezoelectric surgery, piezoelectric bone tissue engineering scaffold, manufacturing artificial cochleae for hearing loss patients, among which the piezoelectric bone tissue engineering scaffold is the main research direction in this field. Background: To investigate the potential role of immune-related genes (IRGs) and immune cells in myocardial infarction (MI) and establish a nomogram model for diagnosing myocardial infarction., Methods: Raw and processed gene expression profiling datasets were archived from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database. Differentially expressed immune-related genes (DIRGs), which were screened out by four machine learning algorithms-partial least squares (PLS), random forest model (RF), k-nearest neighbor (KNN), and support vector machine model (SVM) were used in the diagnosis of MI., Results: The six key DIRGs (PTGER2, LGR6, IL17B, IL13RA1, CCL4, and ADM) were identified by the intersection of the minimal root mean square error (RMSE) of four machine learning algorithms, which were screened out to establish the nomogram model to predict the incidence of MI by using the rms package. The nomogram model exhibited the highest predictive accuracy and better potential clinical utility. The relative distribution of 22 types of immune cells was evaluated using cell type identification, which was done by estimating relative subsets of RNA transcripts (CIBERSORT) algorithm. The distribution of four types of immune cells, such as plasma cells, T cells follicular helper, Mast cells resting, and neutrophils, was significantly upregulated in MI, while five types of immune cell dispersion, T cells CD4 naive, macrophages M1, macrophages M2, dendritic cells resting, and mast cells activated in MI patients, were significantly downregulated in MI., Conclusion: This study demonstrated that IRGs were correlated with MI, suggesting that immune cells may be potential therapeutic targets of immunotherapy in MI., (© 2023. Objective: To evaluate the impact of pre-operative contrast-enhanced mammography (CEM) in breast cancer patients with dense breasts., Methods: We conducted a retrospective review of 232 histologically proven breast cancers in 200 women (mean age: 53.4 years ± 10.2) who underwent pre-surgical CEM imaging across two Asian institutions (Singapore and Taiwan). Majority (95.5%) of patients had dense breast tissue (BI-RADS category C or D). Surgical decision was recorded in a simulated blinded multi-disciplinary team setting on two separate scenarios: (i) pre-CEM setting with standard imaging, and clinical and histopathological results; and (ii) post-CEM setting with new imaging and corresponding histological findings from CEM. Alterations in surgical plan (if any) because of CEM imaging were recorded. Predictors CEM of patients who benefitted from surgical plan alterations were evaluated using logistic regression., Results: CEM resulted in altered surgical plans in 36 (18%) of 200 patients in this study. CEM discovered clinically significant larger tumor size or extent in 24 (12%) patients and additional tumors in 12 (6%) patients. CEM also detected additional benign/false-positive lesions in 13 (6.5%) of the 200 patients. Significant predictors of patients who benefitted from surgical alterations found on multivariate analysis were pre-CEM surgical decision for upfront breast conservation (OR, 7.7; 95% CI, 1.9-32.1; p = 0.005), architectural distortion on mammograms (OR, 7.6; 95% CI, 1.3-42.9; p = .022), and tumor size of ≥ 1.5 cm (OR, 1.5; 95% CI, 1.0-2.2; p = .034)., Conclusion: CEM is an effective imaging technique for pre-surgical planning for Asian breast cancer patients with dense breasts., Key Points: • CEM significantly altered surgical plans in 18% (nearly 1 in 5) of this Asian study cohort with dense breasts. • Significant patient and imaging predictors for surgical plan alteration include (i) patients considered for upfront breast-conserving surgery; (ii) architectural distortion lesions; and (iii) tumor size of ≥ 1.5 cm. • Additional false-positive/benign lesions detected through CEM were uncommon, affecting only 6.5% of the study cohort., (© 2022. Rationale: Tau hyperphosphorylation and aggregation is considered as a main pathological mechanism underlying Alzheimer's disease (AD). Rose Bengal (RB) is a synthetic dye used for disease diagnosis, which was reported to inhibit tau toxicity via inhibiting tau aggregation in Drosophila. However, it was unknown if RB could produce anti-AD effects in rodents., Objectives: The research aimed to investigate if and how RB could prevent β-amyloid (Aβ) oligomers-induced tau hyperphosphorylation in rodents., Methods and Results: RB was tested in vitro (0.3-1 μM) and prevented Aβ oligomers-induced tau hyperphosphorylation in PC12 cells. Moreover, RB (10-30 mg/kg, i.p.) effectively attenuated cognitive impairments induced by Aβ oligomers in mice. Western blotting analysis demonstrated that RB significantly increased the expression of pSer473-Akt, pSer9-glycogen synthase kinase-3β (GSK3β) and reduced the expression of cyclin-dependent kinase 5 (CDK5) both in vitro and in vivo. Molecular docking analysis suggested that RB might directly interact with GSK3β and CDK5 by acting on ATP binding sites. Gene Ontology enrichment analysis indicated that RB might act on protein phosphorylation pathways to inhibit tau hyperphosphorylation., Conclusions: RB was shown to inhibit tau neurotoxicity at least partially via inhibiting the activity of GSK3β and CDK5, which is a novel neuroprotective mechanism besides the inhibition of tau aggregation. As tau hyperphosphorylation is an important target for AD therapy, this study also provided support for investigating the drug repurposing of RB as an anti-AD drug candidate., (© 2022. Amidoxime and carboxylate-containing polymer adsorbents derived from acrylic yarn exhibit high adsorption capacity for lead(ii) (Pb 2+ ) ions in water. The adsorption process follows pseudo-second-order kinetics and fits the extended Langmuir isotherm model with the maximum adsorption capacity of Pb 2+ with 238 mg lead per gram of the fiber at room temperature. Endothermic (Δ H ° = 20.3 kJ per mole), spontaneous, and with the increase in the entropy of Pb 2+ adsorption was observed from the thermodynamic studies. Dynamic column adsorption experiments showed that the fiber can process 4.3 L of water spiked with 1 ppm of lead(ii) solution at a flow rate of 4.4 mL per min under the specified conditions. The selectivity of Pb 2+ with the competitive metal ions showed varying results with highly selective for Pb 2+ in a binary solution with sodium and calcium and varying degrees of competitiveness with transition metal ions. Objective: The prevalence and mortality of cardiovascular diseases remain ranked first worldwide. Myocardial infarction (MI) is the central cause of death from cardiovascular diseases, seriously endangering human health. The clinical implication of toll-like receptor 2 (TLR2) remains contradictory, and its mechanism is still unknown. Hence, the objective of this study was to elucidate the clinical value and molecular mechanism of TLR2 in MI., Methods: All high-throughput datasets and eligible literature were screened, and the expression levels of TLR2 were collected from the MI. The integrated expression level of TLR2 was displayed by calculating the standardized mean difference (SMD) and the area under the curve (AUC) of the summary receiver operating characteristic curve (sROC). The related TLR2 genes were sent for pathway analyses by gene ontology (GO), Kyoto encyclopedia of genes and genome (KEGG), and disease ontology (DO). Single-cell RNA-seq was applied to ascertain the molecular mechanism of TLR2 in MI., Results: Nine microarrays and four reported data were available to calculate the comprehensive expression level of TLR2 in MI, including 325 cases of MI and 306 cases of controls. The SMD was 2.55 (95% CI = 1.35-3.75), and the AUC was 0.76 (95% CI = 0.72-0.79), indicating the upregulation of TLR2 in MI. The related TLR2 genes were primarily enriched in the pathways of atherosclerosis, arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease, and arteriosclerosis, suggesting the clinical role of TLR2 in the progression of MI. Afterward, TLR2 was upregulated in myeloid cells in MI., Conclusions: TLR2 may have a crucial role in progressing from coronary atherosclerosis to MI. In recent years, the increase in the number of cases of postural asphyxia has gradually attracted the attention and discussion of forensic scientists domestically and internationally, but a systematic, comprehensive and recognized expert consensus and identification standard has not been established at home and abroad. This paper reviews the case characteristics, occurrence, mechanism of death, and identification criteria of postural asphyxia, to provide reference for future research.

Breast capillary hemangioma is a rare benign vascular tumor. A 59-year-old asymptomatic woman underwent screening mammography and breast ultrasound. B-mode ultrasound revealed a lobulated, hypoechoic mass. Color Doppler ultrasound showed no intratumoral blood flow. Contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) revealed internal fast homogeneous contrast enhancement of the mass and persistent enhancement after 4 min. A 14-gauge core needle biopsy was then performed. The radiologic and pathologic appearances were concordant with breast capillary hemangioma. The ultrasonic manifestations of breast hemangioma may vary, and differentiation from other inflammatory diseases and malignancies is challenging. Background: The brown planthopper (BPH) is one of the most destructive pests of rice, causing tremendous yield and economic losses every year. The fungal entomopathogen Metarhizium anisopliae was previously proved to have great potential for BPH biocontrol. Genome-wide insight into the insect-fungus interaction is crucial for genetic improvement of M. anisopliae to enhance its virulence to BPH but still has been poorly explored., Results: Using dual RNA-seq approach, we present here a global view of host and fungal gene expressions in BPH adults during the fungal infection. The results revealed that BPH could initiate strong defense responses against the fungal attack by upregulating the expressions of a large number of genes, including genes involved in cuticle formation, immune response, cell detoxification and biomacromolecule metabolism. Correspondingly, the fungal entomopathogen could induce a series of genes to infect and modulate BPH, including genes involved in fungal penetration, invasive growth, stress resistance and virulence. Three host defense-related genes (NlPCE4, NlPOD1 and NlCYP4DE1) were chosen for further function analysis. RNAi-mediated knockdown of NlPCE4 caused a significant decrease in BPH survival, but no obvious effects on the survival rates were detected by the suppression of NlPOD1 and NlCYP4DE1. Combination of dsRNA injection and fungal infection could significantly enhance the BPH-killing speed, as synergistic mortalities were observed in co-treatments of RNAi and M. anisopliae infection., Conclusion: Our study provides a comprehensive insight into molecular mechanisms of host-pathogen interaction between BPH and M. anisopliae and contributes to future development of new efficient biocontrol strategies for BPH biocontrol., (© 2021 Society of Chemical Industry.)

To develop a U-net deep learning method for breast tissue segmentation on fat-sat T1-weighted (T1W) MRI using transfer learning (TL) from a model developed for non-fat-sat images. The training dataset (N = 126) was imaged on a 1.5 T MR scanner, and the independent testing dataset (N = 40) was imaged on a 3 T scanner, both using fat-sat T1W pulse sequence. Pre-contrast images acquired in the dynamic-contrast-enhanced (DCE) MRI sequence were used for analysis. All patients had unilateral cancer, and the segmentation was performed using the contralateral normal breast. The ground truth of breast and fibroglandular tissue (FGT) segmentation was generated using a template-based segmentation method with a clustering algorithm. The deep learning segmentation was performed using U-net models trained with and without TL, by using initial values of trainable parameters taken from the previous model for non-fat-sat images. The ground truth of each case was used to evaluate the segmentation performance of the U-net models by calculating the dice similarity coefficient (DSC) and the overall accuracy based on all pixels. Pearson's correlation was used to evaluate the correlation of breast volume and FGT volume between the U-net prediction output and the ground truth. In the training dataset, the evaluation was performed using tenfold cross-validation, and the mean DSC with and without TL was 0.97 vs. 0.95 for breast and 0.86 vs. 0.80 for FGT. When the final model developed with and without TL from the training dataset was applied to the testing dataset, the mean DSC was 0.89 vs. 0.83 for breast and 0.81 vs. 0.81 for FGT, respectively. Application of TL not only improved the DSC, but also decreased the required training case number. Lastly, there was a high correlation (R 2  > 0.90) for both the training and testing datasets between the U-net prediction output and ground truth for breast volume and FGT volume. U-net can be applied to perform breast tissue segmentation on fat-sat images, and TL is an efficient strategy to develop a specific model for each different dataset., (© 2021. The Author(s).)

Objective: To develop a risk predictor model in evaluation of tomosynthesis-detected architectural distortion (AD) based on characteristics of contrast-enhanced digital mammography (CEDM)., Methods: Ninety-four AD lesions on CEDM in combination with tomosynthesis were retrospectively reviewed from 92 consecutive women (mean age, 52.4 years ± 7.9) with abnormal diagnostic or screening mammography. CEDM results were correlated with histology of ADs using cross-tabulation for statistical analysis. Predictors for risk of malignancy from CEDM characteristics (background parenchyma enhancement, degree of AD enhancement, enhancing morphology, size of enhancement, and enhancing spiculations) and patient's age were evaluated using logistic regression. We propose a sum score, termed AD score (ADS), for risk stratification and corresponding suggested BI-RADS category., Results: Thirty-three of ninety-four (35.1%) of detected AD lesions were malignant. The sensitivity, specificity, PPV, and NPV of CEDM in evaluation of malignant AD are 100%, 42.6%, 48.5%, and 100%, respectively. Absence of AD enhancement on CEDM is highly indicative of no underlying malignancy. On multivariate analysis, the predictors on CEDM with statistical significance are (1) marked intensity of AD enhancement (OR, 22.6; 95%CI 3.1, 166.6; p = .002); and (2) presence of enhancing spiculations (OR, 9.1; 95%CI 2.2, 36.5; p = .002). A prediction model whose scores (ADS) given by ranking of OR of all predictors with AUC of 0.934 and Brier score of 0.0956 was developed., Conclusion: ADS-based lesion characterization on CEDM enables risk assessment of tomosynthesis-detected AD lesions., Key Points: • Architecture distortions presenting with marked enhancement intensity and presence of enhancing spiculations are highly associated with risk of malignancy. • Absence of architecture distortion enhancement in minimal or mild background parenchyma enhancement on CEDM indicates low risk of breast malignancy (NPV = 100%).

Microbiome associated with insects play vital roles in host ecology and physiology. The small brown planthopper (SBPH), Laodelphax striatellus, is a polyphagous insect pest that caused enormous damage to a wide range of cereal crops. Previous studies have assessed the effects of environmental factors, such as antibiotics, insecticide, and geographical habitat on the bacterial composition of SBPH. However, the influence of host plants on the microbial community in SBPH still unclear. Here, we characterized and compared the microbial community in three SBPH populations feeding on rice, barley, and wheat, respectively, using high-throughput amplicon sequencing. Our observations revealed that the microbiome harbored by SBPH was abundant and diverse. Ten phyla comprising 141 genera of bacteria were annotated, and four fungal phyla consisting of 47 genera were assigned. The bacteria belonging to the phylum Proteobacteria were the most prevalent and the fungi with the highest abundance were from the order Hypocreales. Comparative analysis showed that host plants could significantly induce structural changes of SBPH microbiome. Significant differences in abundance were observed in two main bacterial orders (Rickettsiales and Rhodospirillales) and three fungal classes (Sordariomycetes, an unclassified class in Ascomycota and Eurotiomycetes) among three host-adapted SBPH populations. Our results could broaden our understanding of interactions among SBPH, its microbial associates and host plants, and also represented the basis of future SBPH biological management., (© The Author(s) 2021. Objective: The effects of saliva on demineralized dentin and silver diamine fluoride (SDF) were investigated in vitro., Methods: Dentin samples stored in deionized water (DIW), buffer solution (BS), basal medium mucin (BMM), and unstimulated whole saliva (UWS) were demineralized for 3 days and immersed in the same storage media. SDF as a 38 mass% solution was applied to the dentin samples for 3 minutes after they had been replaced in their respective medium. Surfaces were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD)., Results: Scanning electron microscopy showed various surface deposits and coatings, including occlusion of dentinal tubules. DIW resulted in the thinnest coating, whereas BMM resulted in the thickest. EDX and XPS showed the formation of metallic silver and silver compounds in all four media, with the greatest formation in BS. XRD indicated that the main product was silver chloride except in DIW. Sulphur was found in BMM and UWS. EDX and XPS detected fluoride and XRD detected calcium fluoride and fluorohydroxyapatite in BS, BMM, and UWS., Conclusion: The interaction between SDF and demineralized dentin was dependent upon the storage medium. BMM provided an outcome most similar to human saliva.

Gut microbiota plays vital roles in the development, evolution and environmental adaptation of the host insects. The brown planthopper (BPH) is one of the most destructive pests of rice, but little is known about its gut microbiota. In this study, we investigated the gut bacterial communities in two BPH populations feeding on susceptible and resistant rice varieties by high-throughput amplicon sequencing. Our results revealed that the gut bacterial communities in BPH were species diverse. A total of 29 phyla and 367 genera were captured, with Proteobacteria and Acinetobacter being the most prominent phylum and genus, respectively. Comparative analysis showed that significant differences in the profile of gut bacterial communities existed between the two BPH populations. The species richness detected in the population feeding on the resistant rice variety was significantly higher than that in the population rearing on the susceptible rice variety. Although the most dominant gut bacteria at all taxonomic levels showed no significant differences between the two BPH populations, the relative abundances of two subdominant phyla (Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes) and two subdominant classes (Bacteroidia and Clostridia) were significantly different. FAPROTAX analysis further indicated that host rice varieties might induce changes of the gut bacterial flora in BPH, as significant differences in five metabolism-related functional categories (fermentation, methylotrophy, xylanolysis, nitrate reduction and ureolysis) were detected between the two BPH populations. Our results are informative for studies which focused on the interactions between BPH and its symbiotic microbes and could also provide the basis of future BPH biological management.

The microbiome associated with brown planthopper (BPH) plays an important role in mediating host health and fitness. Characterization of the microbial community and its structure is prerequisite for understanding the intricate symbiotic relationships between microbes and host insect. Here, we investigated the bacterial and fungal communities of BPH at different developmental stages using high-throughput amplicon sequencing. Our results revealed that both the bacterial and fungal communities were diverse and dynamic during BPH development. The bacterial communities were generally richer than fungi in each developmental stage. At 97% similarly, 19 phyla and 278 genera of bacteria were annotated, while five fungal phyla comprising 80 genera were assigned. The highest species richness for the bacterial communities was detected in the nymphal stage. The taxonomic diversity of the fungal communities in female adults was generally at a relatively higher level when compared to other developmental stages. The most dominant phylum of bacteria and fungi at each developmental stage all belonged to Proteobacteria and Ascomycota, respectively. A significantly lower abundance of bacterial genus Acinetobacter was recorded in the egg stage when compared to other developmental stages, while the dominant fungal genus Wallemia was more abundant in the nymph and adult stages than in the egg stage. Additionally, the microbial composition differed between male and female adults, suggesting that the microbial communities in BPH were gender-dependent. Purpose: To evaluate the kinetic patterns of benign and malignant breast lesions using contrast-enhanced digital mammogram (CEDM)., Methods: Women with suspicious breast lesions on mammography or ultrasound were enrolled. Single-view mediolateral oblique (MLO) CEDM of an affected breast was acquired at 2, 3, 4, 7, and 10 min after injection of contrast agent. Three readers visually and semi-quantitatively analyzed the enhancement of suspicious lesions. The kinetic pattern of each lesion was classified as persistent, plateau, or washout over two time intervals, 2-4 min and 2-10 min, by comparing the signal intensity at the first time interval with that at the second., Results: There were 73 malignant and 75 benign lesions in 148 patients (mean age: 52 years). Benign and malignant breast lesions showed the highest signal intensity at 3 min and 2 min, respectively. Average areas under receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve for diagnostic accuracy based on lesion enhancement at different time points were 0.73 at 2 min, 0.72 at 3 min, 0.69 at 4 min, 0.67 at 7 min, and 0.64 at 10 min. Diagnostic performance was significantly better at 2, 3, and 4 min than at 7 and 10 min (all p < 0.05). Background: To initiate insect infection, entomopathogenic fungi produce diverse cuticle-degrading enzymes. Of those, lipolytic enzymes participate in epicuticular lipid hydrolysis and thus facilitate fungal penetration through the outermost cuticular barrier of the insect host. The Far/CTF1-type zinc finger transcription factors play an important role in the regulation of lipolytic activity and fungal pathogenicity in plant pathogens but remain functionally unknown in fungal insect pathogens., Results: Two Far/CTF1-type transcription factor Bbctf1α and Bbctf1β, which are essential for differential expression of genes involved in the fungal lipid degradation, were identified and functionally characterized in a fungal entomopathogen Beauveria bassiana. Disruption of each gene led to drastic losses of extracellular lipolytic activities under lipidic substrate-inducing conditions, followed by remarkable phenotypic defects associated with the fungal biocontrol potential. These defects mainly included severe impairments of mycelial growth and conidium formation, and drastic losses of tolerance to the stresses of oxidation and cell wall perturbation during colony growth under either normal or induction conditions. Bioassays showed that the virulence of each disruption mutant on the greater wax moth was remarkably attenuated in topical immersion. However, there was no significant difference in intrahemolymph injection when the cuticle penetration process was bypassed., Conclusions: Bbctf1α and Bbctf1β are multifunctional transcription factors that play vital roles in the regulation of fungal lipid utilization and contribute to the vegetative growth, sporulation capacity, environmental fitness and pest control potential in B. bassiana. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry., (© 2020 Society of Chemical Industry.)

Acrylic fiber can be chemically converted to an amidoxime and carboxylate containing chelating adsorbent by a two-step synthesis method for extraction of uranium from seawater. A portion of the nitrile groups in the fiber is first converted to amidoxime using hydroxylamine followed by conversion of another portion of the nitrile groups to carboxylate with NaOH. At an optimized ratio of amidoxime/carboxylate (about 1 : 1), the chelating fiber in real seawater shows a higher uranium adsorption capacity and shorter saturation time compared with similar high-surface-area chelating fibers developed recently using a radiation-induced grafting method. The saturation capacity of uranium is estimated to be 7.73 grams per kilogram of the adsorbent at 20 °C and the half-saturation time is about 15.7 days. The fiber shows a vanadium/uranium ratio of about 1 in real seawater tests. The low vanadium adsorption capacity of the fiber is attributed to the branched-chain amidoxime groups formed by the specified amidoximation process. This simple and low-cost synthesis method can be scaled up to mass produce the chelating fiber for recovering metals from various aquatic environments including production of uranium from seawater.

Many studies have tried to elucidate the connection between vitamin D receptor (VDR) gene (ApaI) polymorphism and periodontitis; however, so far there is no consensus. To further assess the impact of ApaI polymorphism on periodontitis risk, we have conducted a meta-analysis of Chinese population. Relevant literatures were searched according to PubMed and Chinese database in January 2019. The strength of correlation was evaluated by combining odds ratio (ORs) and 95% confidence interval (CIs). Six case-control studies were identified with inclusion criteria, including 734 cases of periodontitis and 687 controls. Based on the overall analysis, the VDR ApaI polymorphism was not due to the risk of periodontitis in all models. Subgroup analysis showed that the risk of periodontitis in North China was significantly reduced. To sum up, the study shows that VDR-ApaI polymorphism may be connected with a lower risk of periodontitis in northern China. Background: To determine if mammography combined with digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT), leads to superior performance in screening for breast cancer compared to digital mammography (DM) alone., Methods: We retrospectively collected data from A) the results of population-based mammography-screening provided by the National Cancer Registry in Taiwan, and B) the results from all screening mammography performed with DBT from 2012 through 2015 at Kaohsiung Veterans General Hospital (VGHKS) since the institution of DBT at the end of 2011. This was compared data from 3 years with DM performed prior to DBT implementation. We calculated the results of medical audit of VGHKS and compared this with national data. Fisher's exact test is applied., Results: VGHKS data demonstrated a higher cancer detection rate (CDR) and positive predictive value 1 (PPV 1) than the national average. Most prominently in the year 2014, our CDR was 120% better than that of the national average. CDR ranged from 6.3 to 8.1‰ prior to the introduction of DBT, and following DBT implementation this improved to 8.5-11.4‰, reflecting a mean increase of 32.2%. Early cancer detection was 50% higher and node negative rate was 25% higher than the national average of latest year. A 17.8% reduction in recall rate (RR) was achieved due to a decrease in unnecessary recall., Conclusion: There was a 32.2% increase in CDR and a 17.8% decrease in RR when DBT was used as an adjunct to DM, as compared to DM alone. CDRs were approximately twofold better than national average data. DBT was more effective at detecting cancer in ductal carcinoma in situ and stage 1., (Copyright © 2017. Objective: To investigate the pathological features of fatal pediatric hand foot and mouth disease (HFMD)., Methods: The histopathological features of HFMD were first summarized from literature, and then confirmed by in-house autopsies. Furthermore, immunohistochemistry was conducted to detect the distribution and expression level of two enterovirus 71 (EV71) receptors scavenger receptor class B, member 2 (SCARB2), and P-selectin glycoprotein ligand-1 (PSGL1) in the samples of autopsies., Results: The main symptoms of HFMD included hand and foot rashes, as well as oral herpes. The fatal HFMD patients had typical histopathological change in the central nervous system, such as encephaledema and encephalitis. As for respiratory system, the fatal HFMD patients suffered acute pulmonary edema and congestion. SCARB2 positive signaling was distributed equally in bronchial and bronchiolar epithelial cells, alveolar epithelial cells and inflammatory cells of all HFMD patients, healthy children and adults without significant difference. PSGL-1 dispersed in bronchial and bronchiolar epithelial cells of healthy adults, but no PSGL-1 expression was detected in HFMD patients and healthy children., Conclusions: Both of the central nervous and respiratory systems may be involved in the fatal HFMD patients. The EV71 receptor PSGL-1 might play essential parts in the pathogenesis of fatal HFMD, however, the hypothesis needs to be further investigated., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier GmbH. Organic-inorganic hybrids with hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronene (HBC) and polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) were designed and synthesized. The increase of the POSS content (or a change in topology) results in more complex self-assembled structures. This work provides a new approach for the design and synthesis of materials with sub-10 nm sizes.

Purpose: To determine frequency of and assess risk factors for hepatic artery (HA) injury during percutaneous transhepatic biliary drainage (PTBD) and to discuss the technique and report the clinical outcome of embolization for HA injury., Materials and Methods: Over a 14-year period (2002-2016), 1,304 PTBD procedures in 920 patients were recorded. The incidence of HA injury was determined, and possible associated risk factors were analyzed. When injury occurred, HA embolization was performed at the site as close to the bleeding point as possible. Clinical outcomes of these patients after embolization were reported., Results: Of 1,304 PTBD procedures, a left-sided approach was used in 722 procedures (55.4%), and intrahepatic duct (IHD) puncture under ultrasound guidance was used in 1,161 procedures (90.1%). The IHD was nondilated in 124 (9.5%) patients. The punctured ductal entry site was peripheral in 1,181 (90.6%) patients. In this series, 8 procedures (0.61%) were complicated by HA injury. IHD dilatation status was the only risk factor (P = .017) for HA injury. Embolization was performed with technical and clinical success in all 8 patients. No recurrent hemobilia, intraabdominal bleeding, or other sequelae of HA injury after embolization was noted during 1 week to 84 months of follow-up., Conclusions: HA injury is a relatively rare complication of PTBD. IHD dilatation status was the only risk factor for HA injury in this study. When HA injury occurred, embolization therapy was effective in managing this complication., (Copyright © 2017 SIR. Background: To report the technique and clinical outcome of subintimal re-entry in chronic iliac artery occlusion by using a Colapinto transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) needle under rotational angiography (cone-beam computed tomography; CT) imaging guidance., Methods: Patients with chronic iliac artery occlusion with earlier failed attempts at conventional percutaneous recanalization during the past 5 years were enrolled in our study. In these patients, an ipsilateral femoral access route was routinely utilized in a retrograde fashion. A Colapinto TIPS Needle was used to aid the true lumen re-entry after failed conventional intraluminal or subintimal guidewire and catheter-based techniques. The puncture was directed under rotational angiography cone-beam CT guidance to re-enter the abdominal aorta. Bare metallic stents 8-10 mm in diameter were deployed in the common iliac artery, and followed by balloon dilation., Results: Ten patients (9 male; median age, 75 years) were included in our investigation. The average occlusion length was 10.2 cm (range, 4-15 cm). According to the Trans-Atlantic Inter-Society Consensus (TASC) II classification, there were five patients each with Class B and D lesions. Successful re-entry was achieved in all patients without procedure-related complications. The ankle-brachial index (ABI) values increased from 0.38-0.79 to 0.75-1.28 after the procedure. Imaging follow-up (> 6 months) was available in six patients with patency of all stented iliac artery. Thereafter, no complaints of recurrent clinical symptoms occurred during the follow-up period., Conclusion: The use of Colapinto TIPS needle, especially under cone-beam CT image guidance, appears to be safe and effective to re-enter the true lumen in a subintimal angioplasty for a difficult chronic total iliac occlusion., (Copyright © 2017. A fast ultrahigh performance liquid chromatography (UPLC) method has been developed for simultaneous analysis of caffeine and 13 index polyphenols-gallic acid, 8 primary catechins and 4 primary theaflavins in black tea. The method was evaluated in terms of linearity, precision, accuracy and recovery. The lower limits of detection and quantification were in the range of 0.05-0.91 and 0.15-3.00 mg/L, respectively. Satisfactory linearity with correlation coefficient (R2 > 0.9992), interday and intraday precision with the relative standard deviations (<2.94% and <5.06%, respectively), interday and intraday accuracy with relative errors (REs, -5.34% < REs < 4.36% and -5.36% < REs < 7.07%, respectively) and recovery (95.81-104.48%) were achieved for all target compounds. Mobilisation of endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) from the bone marrow is a crucial step in the formation of de novo blood vessels, and levels of peripheral blood EPCs have been shown to be elevated in certain malignant states. Using flow cytometry and a Hill-based colony forming unit (CFU) assay, the present study indicated that higher levels of CD34 and vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2 (VEGFR2) double-positive EPCs, as well as increased formation of endothelial cell colony-forming units (EC-CFUs) are associated with benign and malignant breast diseases, providing possible indicators for breast disease detection. Gene expression profiles revealed a genetic difference between CD34 + VEGFR2 + EPCs and EC-CFUs. Decreased expression of tumour necrosis factor receptor 2 (TNFR2) signalling-related genes and inhibition of tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-induced signalling were demonstrated in EC-CFUs derived from patients with malignant breast disease in comparison with those from healthy controls. Interestingly, our data provided the first evidence that EC-CFUs derived from patients with malignant breast disease were resistant to TNF-α-induced apoptosis, indicating a plausible target for future therapeutic interventions.

Background: Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) is a malignant proliferation of ductal epithelium confined by the basement membrane of the involved breast ducts. The aim of this study was to categorize positive findings of DCIS of the breast on sonography., Methods: From 2007 to 2011, 100 pathologically proven DCIS lesions were evaluated. Four sonographic patterns used to identify DCIS have been characterized as cumulus-type, coral-type, pipe-type, and miscellaneous lesions., Results: The lesion numbers of nonhigh-grade and high-grade DCIS were 44 and 56, respectively. The coral type (42%) was the most commonly found lesion, followed by cumulus-type (38%), pipe-type (17%), and miscellaneous (3%) lesions. There was no significant difference between the sonographic pattern and nuclear grades. However, the coral-type group was composed of significantly more high-grade DCIS cases than the other three types (p < 0.05)., Conclusion: Coral-, cumulus-, and pipe-type lesions are three easily recognizable sonographic findings of DCIS. Improving the breast ultrasound technique to better demonstrate the sonographic pattern is necessary to facilitate breast lesion interpretation., (Copyright © 2016. Aim: To comprehensively analyze the risk factors of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) associated with choroidal detachment (CD)., Methods: A total of 265 eyes of 265 consecutive cases of RRD were retrospectively analyzed. All patients had systemic and ophthalmologic examination. CD was diagnosed by indirect ophthalmoscopy, B-scan ultrasonography, and ultrasound biomicroscope (UBM). Each parameter was compared between patients of RRD and rhegmatogenous retinal detachment associated with choroidal detachment (RRDCD). Logistic regression analysis was used to determine the independent risk factors of CD., Results: There were 52 eyes (19.62%) with CD. Pseudophakia was more commonly seen in RRDCD (21.15% vs 6.10%, P=0.002). Intraocular pressure (IOP) was lower (8.60±3.62 vs 12.96±3.55, P<0.001), best-corrected visual acuity was worse [3.00 (2.00 to 3.00) vs 1.92 (1.22 to 3.00), P=0.001], and refractive error was more myopic [-4 (-9 to -2) vs -2 (-6 to 0), P=0.007] in RRDCD. Eyes with RRDCD had larger extent of retinal detachment (P=0.007). In RRDCD, 34.62% of eyes presented with multiple holes (P=0.044) and 25.00% with macular holes (P=0.012), compared with 20.66% and 14.08% in RRD. High myopia (P=0.039), low IOP (P=0.017), and larger extent of retinal detachment (P<0.001) were significant and independent risk factors for developing CD., Conclusion: For CD in RRD, related factors include BCVA, IOP, lens status, refractive error, extent of retinal detachment, number of holes, and macular hole. Larger extent of retinal detachment, high myopia, and low IOP are significant and independent risk factors.

IgG4-related disease is a novel clinical entity which can affect single or multiple organs. IgG4-related sialadenitis is referred to the salivary gland involvement of IgG4-related disease, with or without other organ involvement. IgG4-related sialadenitis is characterized by painless swelling or enlargement of salivary glands, high serum IgG4 level, abundant IgG4+ plasma cells infiltration with fibrosis histologically, and good response to glucocorticoids. With review of related articles, highlight and provide an overview of the most recent and focused findings and concepts of this disease, including the most significant pathogenic process based on kinds of immunocytes, cytokines, as well as participation of epithelial-mesenchymal transition, the clinical value of elevated serum IgG4 concentration and pathological role of infiltrated IgG4+ plasma cells, the potential relationship with salivary gland malignant tumor, the applying and usefulness of positron emission tomography-CT, the diagnostic utility of lip biopsy, treatment, prognosis, and also future perspectives.

Herein, a facile ultrasonic-assisted strategy was proposed to fabricate the Pd-Pt alloy/multi-walled carbon nanotubes (Pd-Pt/CNTs) nanocomposites. A good number of Pd-Pt alloy nanoparticles with an average of 3.4 ± 0.5 nm were supported on sidewalls of CNTs with uniform distribution. The composition of the Pd-Pt/CNTs nanocomposites could also be easily controlled, which provided a possible approach for the preparation of other architectures with anticipated properties. The Pd-Pt/CNTs nanocomposites were extensively studied by electron microscopy, induced coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and applied for the ethanol and methanol electro-oxidation reaction in alkaline medium. Purpose: To compare the diagnostic accuracy of contrast-enhanced digital mammography (CEDM) and contrast-enhanced tomosynthesis (CET) to dynamic contrast enhanced breast MRI (DCE-MRI) using a multireader-multicase study., Methods: Institutional review board approval and informed consents were obtained. Total 185 patients (mean age 51.3) with BI-RADS 4 or 5 lesions were evaluated before biopsy with mammography, tomosynthesis, CEDM, CET and DCE-MRI. Mediolateral-oblique and cranio-caudal views of the target breast CEDM and CET were acquired at 2 and 4 min after contrast agent injection. A mediolateral-oblique view of the non-target breast was taken at 6 min. Each lesion was scored with forced BI-RADS categories by three readers. Each reader interpreted lesions in the following order: mammography, tomosynthesis, CEDM, CET, and DCE-MRI during a single reading session., Results: Histology showed 81 cancers and 144 benign lesions in the study. Of the 81 malignant lesions, 44% (36/81) were invasive and 56% (45/81) were non-invasive. Areas under the ROC curve, averaged for the 3 readers, were as follows: 0.897 for DCE-MRI, 0.892 for CET, 0.878 for CEDM, 0.784 for tomosynthesis and 0.740 for mammography. Significant differences in AUC were found between the group of contrast enhanced modalities (CEDM, CET, DCE-MRI) and the unenhanced modalities (all p<0.05). No significant differences were found in AUC between DCE-MRI, CET and CEDM (all p>0.05)., Conclusion: CET and CEDM may be considered as an alternative modality to MRI for following up women with abnormal mammography. Background: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (FDG PET/CT) show promise for molecular cancer imaging. We evaluated 3T MRI, FDG PET/CT, and ultrasound images for asymptomatic women with an abnormal screening mammogram., Methods: The Institutional Review Board of Kaohsiung Veterans General Hospital (Kaohsiung, Taiwan) approved the study. Patients provided written informed consent. A total of 11,865 screening mammograms of 118,65 women were performed at our facility between January 2011 and December 2012. Fifty-three asymptomatic women (mean age, 53.3 years) whose screening mammograms had a Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System (BI-RADS) category of 4 or 5 were ultimately enrolled in this study. Breast 3T MRI, FDG PET/CT, and breast ultrasound were performed before biopsy. All imaging modalities were compared by lesion-by-lesion analyses., Results: Fifty-nine breast lesions (28 malignant and 31 benign lesions) from 53 women were analyzed. The sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy for 28 breast cancers were 96%, 77%, and 86%, respectively, for breast 3T MRI; 50%, 100%, and 76%, respectively, for FDG PET,CT; and 61%, 87%, and 74%, respectively, for breast ultrasound. One 0.8-cm invasive breast cancer was missed by the screening mammogram, but detected by breast 3T MRI and FDG PET/CT. The sensitivity for detecting breast cancer was significantly higher with MRI than with PET/CT or ultrasound (for all, p < 0.01). The specificity for detecting breast cancer was significantly higher for PET/CT than for breast MRI (p = 0.02). The sensitivity exhibited by 3T breast MRI and FDG PET/CT for 16 noninvasive breast cancers was 94% and 25%, respectively., Conclusion: On screening mammograms, breast 3T MRI showed higher sensitivity but less specificity than FDG PET/CT for detecting asymptomatic breast cancers., (Copyright © 2015. In this work, cadmium nitrate hexahydrate [Cd(NO₃)₂ · 6H₂O] is as a source of cadmium, zinc nitrate [Zn(NO₃)₂] as a source of zinc source, and NaHSe as a source of selenium which was prepared through reducing the elemental selenium with sodium borohydride (NaBH₄). Then water-soluble Cd₁₋xZnxSe ternary quantum dots with different component were prepared by colloid chemistry. The as-prepared Cd₁₋xZnx Se ternary quantum dots exhibit stable fluorescent property in aqueous solution, and can still maintain good dispersivity at room temperature for four months. Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) and high resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM) were used to analyze crystal structure and morphology of the prepared Cd₁₋xZnxSe. It is found that the as-prepared ternary quantum dots are cubic phase, show as sphere, and the average of particle size is approximate 4 nm. The spectral properties and energy band structure of the as-prepared ternary quantum dots were modulated through changing the atom ratio of elements Zn and Cd. Compared with binary quantum dots CdSe and ZnSe, the ultraviolet-visible (UV-Visible) absorption spectrum and fluorescence (FL) emission spectrum of ternary quantum dots are both red-shift. The composites (Cd₀.₅ Zn₀.₅ Se@TNTs) of Cd₀.₅ Zn₀.₅ Se ternary quantum dots and TiO₂ nanotubes (TNTs) were prepared by directly immerging TNTs into quantum dots dispersive solution for 5 hours. TEM image shows that the Cd₀.₅ Zn₀.₅ Se ternary quantum dots were closely combined to nanotube surface. The infrared spectra show that the Ti-Se bond was formed between Cd₀.₅ Zn₀.₅ Se ternary quantum dots and TiO₂ nanotubes, which improve the stability of the composite. Compared to pristine TNTs, UV-Visible absorption spectrum of the composites is significantly enhanced in the visible region of light. And the absorption band edge of Cd₀.₅Zn₀.₅ Se@TNTs red-shift from 400 to 700 nm. The recombination of the photogenerated electron-hole pairs was restrained with the as-prepared ternary quantum dots. Therefore, the visible-light photocatalytic efficiency was greatly improved. After visible-light irradiation for 60 min, the degradation of Cd₀.₅ Zn₀.₅ Se@TNTs photocatalysts for RhB is nearly 100%, which is about 3. 3 times of that of pristine TNTs and 2. 5 times of that of pure Cd₀.₅ Zn₀.₅ Se ternary quantum dots, respectively.

Introduction: To assess the efficacy of positron emission tomography/computed tomography with the glucose analogue 2-[(18) F]fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose (FDG-PET/CT) in Taiwanese women with early breast cancer detected by mammography screening., Methods: Dual-time-point imaging of whole-body supine and breast prone scans using FDG-PET/CT were performed sequentially in the pre-operative stage., Results: A total of 11,849 patients underwent screening mammography, of whom 1,209 (10.2%) displayed positive results. After further investigation, 54 patients underwent FDG-PET/CT. Post-operative pathology examinations revealed malignancies in 26 lesions, including invasive breast cancer in 11 cases and non-invasive breast cancer in 15 cases, as well as benign disease in 30 lesions. The FDG-PET/CT findings from the whole-body scans were positive for 9 of 11 invasive breast cancers (81.8%) and 3 of 15 non-invasive cancers (20%), and they were negative for all benign lesions. The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV) and negative predictive value (NPV) of FDG-PET/CT with whole-body supine imaging were 46.2%, 100%, 100% and 68.2%, respectively. Breast prone imaging revealed another patient with ductal carcinoma in situ, increasing the sensitivity to 50%. Importantly, positive PET findings were significantly correlated with tumour histology (P = 0.006), tumour size (P = 0.039) and Ki-67 expression (P = 0.011)., Conclusions: FDG-PET/CT with whole-body scanning demonstrated high sensitivity to invasive breast cancer, limited sensitivity to non-invasive breast cancer, and high specificity for breast cancer. FDG-PET/CT might be useful for differentiating tumour invasiveness. Objectives: To investigate the feasibility of using susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI) to discriminate abscesses and necrotic tumours., Methods: Twenty-one patients with pyogenic abscesses, 21 patients with rim-enhancing glioblastomas and 23 patients with rim-enhancing metastases underwent SWI. Intralesional susceptibility signal (ILSS) was analyzed employing both qualitative (QL) and semi-quantitative (SQ) methods. Logistic regression models and receiver operating characteristic analysis were used to demonstrate the discriminating power., Results: In QL analysis, ILSSs were seen in 12 of 21 abscesses, in 20 of 21 glioblastomas, and in 16 of 23 metastases. In SQ analysis, a low degree of ILSS (85.8 %) was in the majority of abscesses and a high degree of ILSS (76.2 %) was in the majority of glioblastomas. SQ model was significantly better than QL model in distinguishing abscesses from glioblastomas (P < .001). A derived ILSS cutoff grade of 1 or less was quantified as having a sensitivity of 85.7 %, specificity of 90.5 %, accuracy of 88.1 %, PPV of 90.0 %, and NPV of 86.4 % in distinguishing abscesses from glioblastomas., Conclusions: A high-grade ILSS may help distinguish glioblastomas from abscesses and necrotic metastatic brain tumours. The lack of ILSS or low-grade ILSS can be a more specific sign in the imaging diagnosis of abscesses., Key Points: • ILSS of SWI can contribute to differential diagnosis of rim-enhanced mass. • Low-grade ILSS can be a more specific sign in abscesses. • High-grade ILSS may help distinguish necrotic glioblastomas from abscesses. • ILSS spreads across the four ILSS categories in metastases.
