BackgroundThe discovery of membrane-enclosed, metabolically functional organelles in Bacteria has transformed our understanding of the subcellular complexity of prokaryotic cells. Biomineralization of magnetic nanoparticles within magnetosomes by magnetotactic bacteria (MTB) is a fascinating example of prokaryotic organelles. Magnetosomes, as nano-sized magnetic sensors in MTB, facilitate cell navigation along the local geomagnetic field, a behaviour referred to as magnetotaxis or microbial magnetoreception. Recent discovery of novel MTB outside the traditionally recognized taxonomic lineages suggests that MTB diversity across the domain Bacteria are considerably underestimated, which limits understanding of the taxonomic distribution and evolutionary origin of magnetosome organelle biogenesis.ResultsHere, we perform the most comprehensive metagenomic analysis available of MTB communities and reconstruct metagenome-assembled MTB genomes from diverse ecosystems. Discovery of MTB in acidic peatland soils suggests widespread MTB occurrence in waterlogged soils in addition to subaqueous sediments and water bodies. A total of 168 MTB draft genomes have been reconstructed, which represent nearly a 3-fold increase over the number currently available and more than double the known MTB species at the genome level. Phylogenomic analysis reveals that these genomes belong to 13 Bacterial phyla, six of which were previously not known to include MTB. These findings indicate a much wider taxonomic distribution of magnetosome organelle biogenesis across the domain Bacteria than previously thought. Comparative genome analysis reveals a vast diversity of magnetosome gene clusters involved in magnetosomal biogenesis in terms of gene content and synteny residing in distinct taxonomic lineages. Phylogenetic analyses of core magnetosome proteins in this largest available and taxonomically diverse dataset support an unexpectedly early evolutionary origin of magnetosome biomineralization, likely ancestral to the origin of the domain Bacteria.ConclusionsThese findings expand the taxonomic and phylogenetic diversity of MTB across the domain Bacteria and shed new light on the origin and evolution of microbial magnetoreception. Potential biogenesis of the magnetosome organelle in the close descendants of the last bacterial common ancestor has important implications for our understanding of the evolutionary history of bacterial cellular complexity and emphasizes the biological significance of the magnetosome organelle. Archeomagnetism focuses on exploring high-resolution variations of the geomagnetic field over hundreds to thousands of years. In this study, we carried out a comprehensive study of chronology, absolute and relative paleointensity on a late Neolithic site in central China. Ages of the samples are constrained to be ~3,500–3,000 BCE, a period when available paleointensity data are sparse. We present a total of 64 high-fidelity absolute paleointensities, demonstrating the field varied quickly from ~55 to ~90 ZAm2 between ~3,500–3,000 BCE. Our results record a new archeomagnetic jerk around 3,300 BCE, which is probably non-dipolar origin. The new results provide robust constraints on global geomagnetic models. We calculated a revised Chinese archeointensity reference curve for future application. The variations of absolute and relative paleointensity versus depth show good consistency, reinforcing the reliability of our results. This new attempt of combining absolute and relative paleointenstiy provides a useful tool for future archeomagnetic research.

Hollow mesoporous hydroxyapatite (HM-HAP) composites coated with titania are prepared to increase the stability and catalytic performance of titania for azo dyes present in the wastewater system. In this work, HM-HAP particles were first synthesized by a hydrothermal method utilizing the CaCO3 core as a template and then coated with titania to form TiO2/HM-HAP composites. Utilizing SEM, XRD, XPS, BET, FTIR, EDS, UV–vis DRS spectroscopy, and point of zero charge (PZC) analysis, the coating morphological and physicochemical parameters of the produced samples were analyzed. The photocatalytic efficiency of the synthesized coated composites was assessed by the degradation of methyl red (MR) dye in water. The results indicated that TiO2/HM-HAP particles could efficiently photodegrade MR dye in water under UV irradiation. The 20% TiO2/HM-HAP coating exhibited high catalytic performance, and the degradation process was followed by the pseudo-first-order (PFO) kinetic model with a rate constant of 0.033. The effect of pH on the degradation process was also evaluated, and the maximum degradation was observed at pH 6. The analysis of degraded MR dye products was investigated using LC-MS and FTIR analysis. Finally, a good support material, HM-HAP for TiO2 coatings, which provides a large number of active adsorption sites and has catalytic degradation performance for MR dye, was revealed. The Clarion–Clipperton Fracture Zone (CCFZ) in the eastern central Pacific Ocean is the world's largest area for potential deep‐sea polymetallic nodule mining and is attracting increased scientific and commercial interest. Recent studies indicate that biogenic magnetite, generated intracellularly by magnetotactic bacteria (MTB), can carry a biogeochemical remanent magnetization in polymetallic nodules, although whether biogenic or physical‐chemical processes are responsible for nodule formation remain poorly constrained. Here, we report a combination of magnetic, electron microscope and geochemical analyses on seafloor surface sediments from the eastern CCFZ to understand the spatial distribution of biogenic magnetite and possible relationships between MTB and polymetallic nodules. Experimental results indicate that sedimentary magnetic minerals from the northern and southern regions are dominated by detrital (eolian loess and volcanic material) and biogenic magnetic minerals (magnetosomes), respectively. Sediments from the intermediate region contain both detrital and biogenic magnetic minerals. Quantitative first‐order reversal curve‐principal component analysis indicates that biogenic magnetite has the highest concentration in the intermediate CCFZ region, coincident with the highest polymetallic nodule density. Combined with previous research, we speculate that MTB growth on the CCFZ seafloor is driven mainly by local redox conditions. Manganese nodule surfaces are rich in organic biofilms, which results in a relatively thick oxic‐anoxic transition zone in high‐abundance manganese nodule regions, which generates an optimal microenvironment for both MTB growth and magnetite biomineralization. This study provides new clues for understanding the ecological distribution of MTB and the biogeochemical remanent magnetization recorded by biogenic magnetite in deep‐sea sediments. Plain Language Summary: Polymetallic nodules are an important seafloor resource because they contain economically important minerals (e.g., Ni, Co, and Mn) that are not common on land. Hence, there is increased economic and scientific interest in understanding the formation mechanisms of these materials. Several studies indicate that biogenic magnetite crystals produced by magnetotactic bacteria (MTB) occur within polymetallic nodules. Testing the relationship between MTB abundance and polymetallic nodule distribution can help to better understand how these materials formed. Here, we study seafloor sediments from the Clarion‐Clipperton Fracture Zone (CCFZ) and find that they mainly contain biogenic and detrital magnetic minerals. Detrital magnetic minerals come from volcanic chains and eolian dust, while biogenic magnetite forms within bacterial cells. We find that increased biogenic magnetite abundance coincides with higher polymetallic nodule occurrences in the CCFZ. This implies that MTB activity may play a significant role in the formation and growth of polymetallic nodules. Paleointensity records are vital for understanding the Earth's evolution, but obtaining accurate paleointensity is a challenging task. The Shaw‐type method, a widely‐used paleointensity protocol, produces biased results occasionally despite strict selection criteria. By examining the relationships between paleointensities and rock magnetic parameters from a pseudo‐Tsunakawa‐Shaw experiment, we ascertain that changes in the ratio of thermal to anhysteretic remanent magnetization (R) are proportional to bias in paleointensity, especially prominent in samples with hundred‐nanometer‐scale magnetic grains, and thus proved to be the culprit for the bias. Furthermore, we develop a method exploiting the Linear regression of R with Diverse cut‐off coercivity intervals for estimating Shaw‐type paleointensities (LoRD‐Shaw). Combined with a curve fit technique for samples with "folding" phenomenon, the LoRD‐Shaw method yields high‐accuracy results in all tested samples, demonstrating its efficiency in mitigating paleointensity bias from thermal alteration. The new method will enhance acquisition of high‐precision paleointensities for constraining the geodynamo evolution. Plain Language Summary: Precise retrieval of ancient geomagnetic field strength is instrumental in elucidating the evolutionary history of the Earth's interior. Nevertheless, various paleointensity protocols including the widely used Shaw‐type method are struggling to get enough authentic data to satisfy the demand for clarifying crucial questions such as the solidification time of the Earth's inner core and interactions between different geospheres. Here, we figure out the culprit of biased results derived from Shaw‐series protocols and propose a new calculation method (LoRD‐Shaw) to solve the problem. The LoRD‐Shaw method achieves accurate results in both laboratory‐tested and modern volcanic samples with a high success rate, which will promote the acquisition of abundant high‐precision paleointensities for geomagnetic study, and thus contribute to the geoscience community. Microbes that synthesize minerals, a process known as microbial biomineralization, contributed substantially to the evolution of current planetary environments through numerous important geochemical processes. Despite its geological significance, the origin and evolution of microbial biomineralization remain poorly understood. Through combined metagenomic and phylogenetic analyses of deep-branching magnetotactic bacteria from the Nitrospirae phylum, and using a Bayesian molecular clock-dating method, we show here that the gene cluster responsible for biomineralization of magnetosomes, and the arrangement of magnetosome chain(s) within cells, both originated before or near the Archean divergence between the Nitrospirae and Proteobacteria This phylogenetic divergence occurred well before the Great Oxygenation Event. Magnetotaxis likely evolved due to environmental pressures conferring an evolutionary advantage to navigation via the geomagnetic field. Earth's dynamo must therefore have been sufficiently strong to sustain microbial magnetotaxis in the Archean, suggesting that magnetotaxis coevolved with the geodynamo over geological time.

Variations of the Earth's geomagnetic field during the Holocene are important for understanding centennial to millennial-scale processes of the Earth's deep interior and have enormous potential implications for chronological correlations (e.g., comparisons between different sedimentary recording sequences, archaeomagnetic dating). Here, we present 21 robust archaeointensity data points from eastern China spanning the past ∼6 kyr. These results add significantly to the published data both regionally and globally. Taking together, we establish an archaeointensity reference curve for Eastern Asia, which can be used for archaeomagnetic dating in this region. Virtual axial dipole moments (VADMs) of the data range from a Holocene-wide low of ∼27 to "spike" values of ∼166 ZAm2 (Z: 1021). The results, in conjunction with our recently published data, confirm the existence of a decrease in paleointensity (DIP) in China around ∼2200 BCE. These low intensities are the lowest ever found for the Holocene and have not been reported outside of China. We also report a spike intensity of 165.8 ± 6.0 ZAm2 at ∼1300 BCE (±300 y), which is either a prelude to or the same event (within age uncertainties) as spikes first reported in the Levant.

Paleomagnetic secular variation (PSV) records provide important information for the dynamic processes of the Earth's geomagnetic field, and also can be used for regional stratigraphic correlation. We conducted a paleomagnetic study on a high sedimentation rate Holocene loess section (the Minle section) with precise 14C age constraints in Northwest China. Rock magnetic results indicate that single domain and pseudo‐single‐domain magnetites are the main magnetic carriers of the natural remanent magnetization. Combining the alternating field demagnetization and thermal demagnetization results, we obtained a high‐resolution PSV record with both absolute declination and inclination since ∼13 ka. Combining with previously published sedimentary records in East Asia, we developed an East Asian PSV reference curve over the past 14 ka (EASed14k) by relocating all the data to a common location (30ºN, 108ºE) and averaging them through Fisher statistics. We further generated a regional geomagnetic directional model spanning the past 14 ka for East Asia (SCHA.EAS14k), using the in situ PSV records and applying the revised spherical cap harmonic analysis in space and cubic B‐spline in time. The predicted directional curves from this model at the common location are consistent with the EASed14k curves, which represent the first‐order variation of the geomagnetic field in this area. The established reference curve and regional model for East Asia in this study will be used for regional and global comparison of the geomagnetic field. Studying the variation patterns of the geomagnetic field is useful for detecting the geometry of the field, revealing the dynamic process of the Earth as well as stratigraphic correlation and dating. Continuous information of the geomagnetic field can be obtained by performing magnetic measurements on lake, marine and loess sediments. In this study, we conducted paleomagnetic study on a high sedimentation rate Holocene loess section in Northwest China and recovered directional variation of the geomagnetic field since ∼13 ka. And then, we compiled the sediment data and calculated a composite geomagnetic directional reference curve spanning the past ∼14 ka for East Asia. We further established an East Asian regional geomagnetic directional model with the new and compiled data, which can predict variations of the field direction at any point in the region within a spherical cap of 25° centered at 30ºN, 108ºE in East Asia. The established composite curve and regional model in this study provide local reference field for global comparison of the geomagnetic field and space physics study.
