Seismic b-value is one of the most important parameters for seismological research and seismic hazards assessment, while the accuracy of the b-value largely depended on the completeness of seismic catalog. This article compares eight methods for estimating the minimum magnitude of completeness (Mc). The results indicate that the modified maximum curvature method (MMAXC), exhibits greater stability and accuracy, closely approximating the standard M[sub c] obtained from the synthetic seismic catalogs. We then calculate the b-value using the instrumental seismic catalog from 2000-2023 in the eastern Tibetan Plateau. The results indicate that the five major earthquakes occur in regions with lower b-value. In addition, the temporal evolution of b-value before and after major earthquakes exhibits a common trend of decreasing before earthquakes, and increasing after earthquakes, which may reflect the stress accumulation and release during earthquakes. Combining the results of maximum shear strain rate and b-value, we identify five regions characterized by low b-value and high shear strain rate, indicating a higher potential seismic hazard in the future. A pilot study employing a template-matching approach on the detection of repeating earthquakes (or repeaters) in a small volume of the Irpinia fault (Southern Italy) is presented here. A catalog of repeaters nucleating over about a decade with local magnitudes ranging between M L 0.4 and M L 1.7 is generated. The events nucleate at depths of about 11 km over a fault patch with a size of about 600 m. Assuming a constant stress drop for all repeaters, the yearly coseismic slip rate of the patch is estimated in the range of 1–4.8 mm with a mean value of about 3.4 mm, which is close to the fault slip rate estimated by geodetic approaches. Given the mechanical properties of the medium in the source region of the repeaters revealed by previous tomographic studies, and in particular the high Vp/Vs ratio (close to 1.95), it is postulated that these events are fluid triggered, consistently with the mechanism proposed for the generation of most of the microseismicity in the area. The encouraging outcomes of this study suggest to focus future measurement campaigns on this area and open perspectives to extend this approach to other segments of the Irpinia fault to reveal small-scale frictional properties in an area capable to generate M7 earthquakes. A long foreshock series unlocked the South American plate boundary until eventually initiating the M 8.1 Iquique, Chile, earthquake. 2014 Iquique earthquake examined Two groups publishing in this issue of Nature analyse the seismic context of the Iquique earthquake that occurred off the coast of northern Chile on 1 April 2014 in a seismic zone that had been quiescent since a significant event in 1877. Gavin Hayes et al. identify areas of remaining or elevated earthquake hazard along the megathrust fault in the region, and conclude that the 2014 Iquique event was not the earthquake that had been anticipated. Given that significant sections of the northern Chile subduction zone have not ruptured in almost 150 years, they suggest that it is likely that future megathrust earthquakes will occur south and potentially north of the 2014 Iquique sequence. Bernd Schurr et al. show that the April 2014 earthquake broke a central fraction of the 'northern Chile seismic gap', the last major segment of the South American plate boundary that had yet to rupture in the past century. From July 2013 up to the April earthquake they identify three seismic clusters along this part of the plate boundary, each lasting a few weeks, with earthquakes of increasing peak magnitudes. They conclude that these seismic clusters and their slip transients reflect a gradual weakening of the central part of the seismic gap that was instrumental in initiating the final failure. On 1 April 2014, Northern Chile was struck by a magnitude 8.1 earthquake following a protracted series of foreshocks. The Integrated Plate Boundary Observatory Chile monitored the entire sequence of events, providing unprecedented resolution of the build-up to the main event and its rupture evolution. Here we show that the Iquique earthquake broke a central fraction of the so-called northern Chile seismic gap, the last major segment of the South American plate boundary that had not ruptured in the past century.sup.1,2. Since July 2013 three seismic clusters, each lasting a few weeks, hit this part of the plate boundary with earthquakes of increasing peak magnitudes. Starting with the second cluster, geodetic observations show surface displacements that can be associated with slip on the plate interface. These seismic clusters and their slip transients occupied a part of the plate interface that was transitional between a fully locked and a creeping portion. Leading up to this earthquake, the b value of the foreshocks gradually decreased during the years before the earthquake, reversing its trend a few days before the Iquique earthquake. The mainshock finally nucleated at the northern end of the foreshock area, which skirted a locked patch, and ruptured mainly downdip towards higher locking. Peak slip was attained immediately downdip of the foreshock region and at the margin of the locked patch. We conclude that gradual weakening of the central part of the seismic gap accentuated by the foreshock activity in a zone of intermediate seismic coupling was instrumental in causing final failure, distinguishing the Iquique earthquake from most great earthquakes. Estimating small-scale VP/VS variations at depth can be a powerful tool to infer lithology and hydration of a rock, with possible implications for frictional behavior. In principle, from the differential arrival times of P and S phases from a set of spatially clustered earthquakes, an estimate of the local VP/VS can be extracted, because the VP/VS is the scaling factor between the P and S differential times for each pair of earthquakes. We critically review the technique proposed by Lin and Shearer (2007), in which the mean value over all stations is subtracted from the differential arrival times of each pair of events in order to make the method independent of a priori information on origin times. The demeaned differential P and S arrival times are plotted on a plane, and the VP/VS ratio is estimated by fitting the points on this plane. We tested the method by both theoretical analysis and numerical simulations of P and S travel times in several velocity models. We found that the method returns exact values of VP/VS only in the case of a medium with homogeneous VP/VS, whereas, when a VP/VS gradient is present, the estimates are biased as an effect of systematic differences between P and S takeoff angles. We demonstrated that this bias arises from the demeaning of the arrival times over the stations. In layered models with VP/VS decreasing with depth, we found that VP/VS is overestimated or underestimated, respectively, for takeoff angles larger or smaller than 90°. Moreover, we calculated analytically the dependence of this bias on the takeoff angles. Our simulations also showed that the difference between the calculated and the expected VP/VS is reduced for simple horizontally layered velocity structures (<0.06), whereas it is 0.27 in a more realistic velocity model mimicking a subduction zone.
