1. Smart Automation in Luxury Leather Shoe Polishing: A Human Centric Robotic Approach

Abstract

The polishing of luxury leather shoes is a delicate, labor intensive process traditionally performed by skilled craftsmen. Footwear companies aim to automate parts of this process to enhance quality, productivity, and operator well-being, but the unique nature of luxury shoe production presents challenges. This paper introduces a solution involving a collaborative robotic cell to assist in shoe polishing. A collaborative robotic manipulator, equipped with a specialized tool and governed by force control, executes the polishing tasks. Key factors such as trajectory design, applied force, polishing speed, and polish amount were analyzed. Polishing trajectories are designed using CAM software and transferred to the robot control system. Human operators design the process, supervise the robot, and perform final finishing, ensuring their expertise is integral to achieving quality. Extensive testing on various shoe models showed significant improvements in quality and reliability, leading to successful implementation on an industrial production line.

Abstract

Collaboration between humans and machines is the core of the Industry 5.0 paradigm, and collaborative robotics is one the most impactful enabling technologies for small and medium Enterprises (SMEs). In fact, small batch production and high levels of product customization make parts assembly one of the most challenging operations to be automated, and it often still depends on the versatility of human labor. Collaborative robots, for their part, can be easily integrated in this productive paradigm, as they have been specifically developed for coexistence with human beings. This work investigates the performance of collaborative robots in machine parts assembly. Design and research activities were carried out as a case study of industrial relevance at the i-Labs industry laboratory, a pole of innovation that is briefly introduced at the beginning of the paper. A fully-functional prototype of the cobotized station was realized at the end of the project, and several experimental tests were performed to validate the robustness of the assembly process as well as the collaborative nature of the application. 42. A human-oriented design process for collaborative robotics.

Abstract

The potential of collaborative robotics often does not materialize in an efficient design of the human-robot collaboration. Technology-oriented approaches are no longer enough in the Industry 4.0 era. This work proposes a set of methods to support manufacturing engineers in the human-oriented design process of integrated production systems to obtain satisfactory performance in the mass customization paradigm, without impacting the safety and health of workers. It founds the design criteria definition on five main pillars (safety, ergonomics, effectiveness, flexibility, and costs), favors the consideration of different design alternatives, and leads their selection. The dynamic impact of the design choices on the various elements of the system prevails over the static design constraints. The method has been experimented in collaboration with the major kitchen manufacturer in Italy, which introduced a collaborative robotics cell in the drawers' assembly line. It resulted in a more balanced production line (10% more), a verified risk minimization (RULA score reduced from 5 to 3 and OCRA score from 13.30 to 5.70), and a greater allocation of operators to high added value activities. Abstract

The inherent reliability and safety of collaborative robots allow their application in the healthcare industry, e.g. for neuromuscular rehabilitation. This work proposes a mechatronic implementation of a platform for rehabilitation practices. A case study has been developed with different control laws of the robot for the restoring of the coordination of upper limbs through grasping exercises. Preliminary experiments are conducted on ten healthy volunteers. No adverse events occurred and trajectory and force data were collected in order to track the therapy. Results show that the exercise is sufficiently simple and non-stressing with the provided robotic law.
