Search

A dome-shaped phase diagram of superconducting critical temperature upon doping is often considered as a hallmark of unconventional superconductors. This behavior, observed in two-dimensional electron gases in $\mathrm{SrTiO}_3$-based interfaces whose electronic density is controlled by field effect, has not been explained unambiguously yet. Here, we elaborate a generic scenario for the superconducting phase diagram of these oxide interfaces based on Schr\"odinger-Poisson numerical simulations of the quantum well and transport experiments on a double-gate field-effect device. We propose that the optimal doping point of maximum $T_c$ marks the transition between a single-band and a fragile two-gap s$\pm$-wave superconducting state involving $t_{2g}$ bands of different orbital character. At the optimal doping point, we predict and observe experimentally a bifurcation in the dependence of $T_c$ on the carrier density, which is controlled by the details of the doping execution. Where applying a back-gate voltage triggers the filling of a high-energy $d_\mathrm{xy}$ subband and initiates the overdoped regime, doping with a top-gate delays the filling of the subband and maintains the 2-DEG in the single-band superconducting state of higher $T_c$., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures

Electric-field effect control of two-dimensional electron gases (2-DEG) has enabled the exploration of nanoscale electron quantum transport in semiconductors. Beyond these classical materials, transition metal-oxide-based structures have d-electronic states favoring the emergence of novel quantum orders absent in conventional semiconductors. In this context, the LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interface that combines gate-tunable superconductivity and sizeable spin-orbit coupling is emerging as a promising platform to realize topological superconductivity. However, the fabrication of nanodevices in which the electronic properties of this oxide interface can be controlled at the nanoscale by field-effect remains a scientific and technological challenge. Here, we demonstrate the quantization of conductance in a ballistic quantum point contact (QPC), formed by electrostatic confinement of the LaAlO3/SrTiO3 2-DEG with a split-gate. Through finite source-drain voltage, we perform a comprehensive spectroscopic investigation of the 3d energy levels inside the QPC, which can be regarded as a spectrometer able to probe Majorana states in an oxide 2-DEG.

In multiorbital materials, superconductivity can exhibit new exotic forms that include several coupled condensates. In this context, quantum confinement in two-dimensional superconducting oxide interfaces offers new degrees of freedom to engineer the band structure and selectively control 3d-orbitals occupancy by electrostatic doping. However, the presence of multiple superconducting condensates in these systems has not yet been demonstrated. Here, we use resonant microwave transport to extract the superfluid stiffness of the (110)-oriented LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interface in the entire phase diagram. We evidence a transition from single-band to two-band superconductivity driven by electrostatic doping, which we relate to the filling of the different 3d-orbitals based on numerical simulations of the quantum well. Interestingly, the superconducting transition temperature decreases while the second band is populated, which challenges the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer theory. To explain this behaviour, we propose that the superconducting order parameters associated with the two bands have opposite signs with respect to each other.

The large diversity of exotic electronic phases displayed by two-dimensional superconductors confronts physicists with new challenges. These include the recently discovered quantum Griffith singularity in atomic Ga films, topological phases in proximized topological insulators and unconventional Ising pairing in transition metal dichalcogenide layers. In LaAlO3/SrTiO3 heterostructures, a gate tunable superconducting electron gas is confined in a quantum well at the interface between two insulating oxides. Remarkably, the gas coexists with both magnetism and strong Rashba spin-orbit coupling and is a candidate system for the creation of Majorana fermions. However, both the origin of superconductivity and the nature of the transition to the normal state over the whole doping range remain elusive. Missing such crucial information impedes harnessing this outstanding system for future superconducting electronics and topological quantum computing. Here we show that the superconducting phase diagram of LaAlO3/SrTiO3 is controlled by the competition between electron pairing and phase coherence. Through resonant microwave experiments, we measure the superfluid stiffness and infer the gap energy as a function of carrier density. Whereas a good agreement with the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) theory is observed at high carrier doping, we find that the suppression of Tc at low doping is controlled by the loss of macroscopic phase coherence instead of electron pairing as in standard BCS theory. We find that only a very small fraction of the electrons condenses into the superconducting state and propose that this corresponds to the weak filling of a high-energy dxz/yz band, more apt to host superconductivity

We designed, fabricated and tested short one dimensional arrays of masked ion-irradiated YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_7$ Josephson junctions (JJ) embedded into log-periodic spiral antennas. Our arrays consist of 4 or 8 junctions separated either by 960~nm or 80~nm long areas of undamaged YBCO. Samples with distanced junctions and with closely spaced junctions showed qualitatively different behaviors. Well separated arrays demonstrated giant Shapiro steps in the hundreds-GHz band at 66K and were tested as Josephson mixers with improved impedance matching. All closely spaced arrays behaved as one junction with a lower superconducting transition temperature, hence forming a single weak link on distances up to 880~nm. Such design opens a new way to increase the I$_{c}$R$_{N}$ product of ion-irradiated junctions and we speculate that the phenomena and physics behind it might be similar to the so-called "giant" Josephson coupling observed in cuprates.

We report the fabrication of few hundred microns long, hundreds of nanometers wide and 30 nm thick meanders made from YBa2CU3O7. Thin films protected by a 8 nm-thick Ce02 cap layer have been patterned by high energy (a few tens of keV) oxygen ion irradiation through photoresist masks. DC and RF characterizations outline good superconducting properties of nano-meanders that could be used as Superconducting Single Photon Detectors (SSPD). By mean of a resonant method, their inductance, which mainly sets the maximum speed of these devices, has been measured on a wide range of temperature. It compares favorably with expected values calculated from the geometry of the meanders and the known London penetration depth in YBa2CU3O7., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

A rather unique feature of the two-dimensional electron gas (2-DEG) formed at the interface between the two insulators LaAlO3 and SrTiO3 is to host both gate-tunable superconductivity and strong spin-orbit coupling. In the present work, we use the disorder generated by Cr substitution of Al atoms in LaAlO3 as a tool to explore the nature of superconductivity and spin-orbit coupling in these interfaces. A reduction of the superconducting Tc is observed with Cr doping consistent with an increase of electron-electron interaction in presence of disorder. In addition, the evolution of spin-orbit coupling with gate voltage and Cr doping suggests a D'Yakonov-Perel mechanism of spin relaxation in the presence of a Rashba-type spin-orbit interaction.

We report on the noise properties of ion-irradiated YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_7$ Josephson junctions. This work aims at investigating the linewidth of the Josephson oscillation with a detector response experiment at $\simeq$132 GHz. Experimental results are compared with a simple analytical model based on the Likharev-Semenov equation and the de Gennes dirty limit approximation. We show that the main source of low-frequency fluctuations in these junctions is the broadband Johnson noise and that the excess ($\frac{1}{f}$) noise contribution does not prevail in the temperature range of interest, as reported in some other types of high-T$_c$ superconducting Josephson junctions. Finally, we discuss the interest of ion-irradiated junctions to implement frequency-tunable oscillators consisting of synchronized arrays of Josephson junctions.

Superconducting Quantum Interference Filters (SQIFs) are arrays of superconducting loops of different sizes including Josephson Junctions (JJ). For a random distribution of sizes, they present a non-periodic response to an applied magnetic field, with an extended linear regime and a sizable field sensitivity. Such properties make SQIFs interesting devices to detect the magnetic component of electromagnetic waves at microwave frequencies. We have used the highly scalable technique of ion irradiation to make High Tc SQUIDs and SQIFs based on commercial YBa2Cu3O7 films, and studied their properties. Both display optimum performances as a function of temperature and bias current, that can be understood in the frame of numerical simulations that we developed. The role of asymmetries and spread in JJ characteristics (routinely found in HTSc technologies) is described : ion irradiation based devices appear robust against them. We finally present results on SQIF made with 2000 SQUID in series, showing a transfer function dV/dB ~ 1000V/T ., Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures

In the vicinity of a phase transition, the order parameter starts fluctuating before vanishing at the critical point. The fluctuation regime, i.e. the way the ordered phase disappears, is a characteristics of a transition, and determines the universality class it belongs to. This is valid for thermal transitions, but also for zero temperature Quantum Phase Transitions (QPT). In the case of superconductivity, the order parameter has an amplitude and a phase, which can both fluctuate according to well identified scenarios. The Ginzburg-Landau theory and its extensions describe the fluctuating regime of regular metallic superconductors, and the associated dynamics of the pair amplitude and the phase. When the system is two-dimensional and/or very disordered, phase fluctuations dominate. Here, we address the possibility that a new type of fluctuations occurs in superconductors with an anomalous dynamics. In particular we show that the superconducting to metal QPT that occurs upon changing the gate voltage in two-dimensional electron gases at LAO/STO and LTO/STO interfaces displays anomalous scaling properties, which can be explained by density driven superconducting critical fluctuations. A Finite Size Scaling (FSS) analysis reveals that the product z.nu (nu is the correlation length exponent and z the dynamical critical one) is z.nu = 3/2. We argue that critical superconducting fluctuations acquire an anomalous dynamics with z=3, since they couple to density ones in the vicinity of a spontaneous electronic phase separation, and that nu=1/2 corresponds to the mean-field value. This approach strongly departs from the conventional z=1 scenario in disordered 2D systems based on long-range Coulomb interactions with dominant phase fluctuations. This scenario can explain recent data in LSCO ultra-thin films, and apply to a whole class of two-dimensional superconductors., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures

The recent development in the fabrication of artificial oxide heterostructures opens new avenues in the field of quantum materials by enabling the manipulation of the charge, spin and orbital degrees of freedom. In this context, the discovery of two-dimensional electron gases (2-DEGs) at LAlO3/SrTiO3 interfaces, which exhibit both superconductivity and strong Rashba spin-orbit coupling (SOC), represents a major breakthrough. Here, we report on the realisation of a field-effect LaAlO3/SrTiO3 device, whose physical properties, including superconductivity and SOC, can be tuned over a wide range by a top-gate voltage. We derive a phase diagram, which emphasises a field-effect-induced superconductor-to-insulator quantum phase transition. Magneto-transport measurements indicate that the Rashba coupling constant increases linearly with electrostatic doping. Our results pave the way for the realisation of mesoscopic devices, where these two properties can be manipulated on a local scale by means of top-gates.

The two-dimensional electron gas at the LaTiO3/SrTiO3 or LaAlO3/SrTiO3 oxide interfaces becomes superconducting when the carrier density is tuned by gating. The measured resistance and superfluid density reveal an inhomogeneous superconductivity resulting from percolation of filamentary structures of superconducting "puddles" with randomly distributed critical temperatures, embedded in a non-superconducting matrix. Following the evidence that superconductivity is related to the appearance of high-mobility carriers, we model intra-puddle superconductivity by a multi-band system within a weak coupling BCS scheme. The microscopic parameters, extracted by fitting the transport data with a percolative model, yield a consistent description of the dependence of the average intra-puddle critical temperature and superfluid density on the carrier density., Comment: 7 pages with 3 figures + supplemental material (4 pages and 5 figures)

We study the magnetic field driven Quantum Phase Transition (QPT) in electrostatically gated superconducting LaTiO3/SrTiO3 interfaces. Through finite size scaling analysis, we show that it belongs to the (2+1)D XY model universality class. The system can be described as a disordered array of superconducting islands coupled by a two dimensional electron gas (2DEG). Depending on the 2DEG conductance tuned by the gate voltage, the QPT is single (corresponding to the long range phase coherence in the whole array) or double (one related to local phase coherence, the other one to the array). By retrieving the coherence length critical exponent \nu, we show that the QPT can be "clean" or "dirty" according to the Harris criteria, depending on whether the phase coherence length is smaller or larger than the island size. The overall behaviour is well described by a theoretical approach of Spivak et al., in the framework of the fermionic scenario of 2D superconducting QPT.

Two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) confined in quantum wells at insulating oxide interfaces have attracted much attention as their electronic properties display a rich physics with various electronics orders such as superconductivity and magnetism. A particularly exciting features of these hetero-structures lies in the possibility to control their electronic properties by electrostatic gating, opening up new opportunities for the development of oxide based electronics. However, unexplained gating hysteresis and time relaxation of the 2DEG resistivity have been reported in some bias range, raising the question of the precise role of the gate voltage. Here we show that in LaTiO3/SrTiO3 and LaAlO3/SrTiO3 heterostructures, above a filling threshold, electrons irreversibly escape out of the well. This mechanism, which is directly responsible for the hysteresis and time relaxation, can be entirely described by a simple analytical model derived in this letter. Our results highlight the crucial role of the gate voltage both on the shape and the filling of the quantum well. They also demonstrate that it is possible to achieve a low-carrier density regime in a semiconductor limit, whereas the high-carrier density regime is intrinsically limited.

We have searched for compact stellar structures within 17 tidal tails in 13 different interacting galaxies using F606W- and F814W- band images from the Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). The sample of tidal tails includes a diverse population of optical properties, merging galaxy mass ratios, HI content, and ages. Combining our tail sample with Knierman et al. (2003), we find evidence of star clusters formed in situ with Mv < -8.5 and V-I < 2.0 in 10 of 23 tidal tails; we are able to identify cluster candidates to Mv = -6.5 in the closest tails. Three tails offer clear examples of "beads on a string" star formation morphology in V-I color maps. Two tails present both tidal dwarf galaxy (TDG) candidates and cluster candidates. Statistical diagnostics indicate that clusters in tidal tails may be drawn from the same power-law luminosity functions (with logarithmic slopes ~ -2 - -2.5) found in quiescent spiral galaxies and the interiors of interacting systems. We find that the tail regions with the largest number of observable clusters are relatively young (< 250 Myr old) and bright (V < 24 mag arcsec^(-2)), probably attributed to the strong bursts of star formation in interacting systems soon after periapse. Otherwise, we find no statistical difference between cluster-rich and cluster-poor tails in terms of many observable characteristics, though this analysis suffers from complex, unresolved gas dynamics and projection effects., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal. 27 pages, 8 figures

The anti-ferromagnetic coupling of a magnetic impurity carrying a spin with the conduction electrons spins of a host metal is the basic mechanism responsible for the increase of the resistance of an alloy such as Cu${}_{0.998}$Fe${}_{0.002}$ at low temperature, as originally suggested by Kondo . This coupling has emerged as a very generic property of localized electronic states coupled to a continuum . The possibility to design artificial controllable magnetic impurities in nanoscopic conductors has opened a path to study this many body phenomenon in unusual situations as compared to the initial one and, in particular, in out of equilibrium situations. So far, measurements have focused on the average current. Here, we report on \textit{current fluctuations} (noise) measurements in artificial Kondo impurities made in carbon nanotube devices. We find a striking enhancement of the current noise within the Kondo resonance, in contradiction with simple non-interacting theories. Our findings provide a test bench for one of the most important many-body theories of condensed matter in out of equilibrium situations and shed light on the noise properties of highly conductive molecular devices., Comment: minor differences with published version

We report on spin dependent transport measurements in carbon nanotubes based multi-terminal circuits. We observe a gate-controlled spin signal in non-local voltages and an anomalous conductance spin signal, which reveal that both the spin and the orbital phase can be conserved along carbon nanotubes with multiple ferromagnetic contacts. This paves the way for spintronics devices exploiting both these quantum mechanical degrees of freedom on the same footing., Comment: 8 pages - minor differences with published version

We have used V- and I- band images from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) to identify compact stellar clusters within the tidal tails of twelve different interacting galaxies. The seventeen tails within our sample span a physical parameter space of HI/stellar masses, tail pressure and density through their diversity of tail lengths, optical brightnesses, mass ratios, HI column densities, stage on the Toomre sequence, and tail kinematics. Our preliminary findings in this study indicate that star cluster demographics of the tidal tail environment are compatible with the current understanding of star cluster formation in quiescent systems, possibly only needing changes in certain parameters or normalization of the Schechter cluster initial mass function (CIMF) to replicate what we observe in color-magnitude diagrams and a brightest absolute magnitude -- log N plot., Comment: To appear in the Proceedings of the Galaxy Wars: Stellar Populations and Star Formation in Interacting Galaxies Conference

Super star clusters are young, compact star clusters found in the central regions of interacting galaxies. Recently, they have also been reported to preferentially form in certain tidal tails, but not in others. In this paper, we have used 21 cm HI maps and the Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 images of eight tidal tail regions of four merging galaxy pairs to compare the kiloparsec scale HI distribution with the location of super star clusters found from the optical images. For most of the tails, we find that there is an increase in super star cluster density with increasing projected HI column density, such that the star cluster density is highest when log N(HI) >= 20.6 cm^{-2}, but equal to the background count rate at lower HI column density. However, for two tails (NGC 4038/39 Pos A and NGC 3921), there is no significant star cluster population despite the presence of gas at high column density. This implies that the N(HI) threshold is a necessary but not sufficient condition for cluster formation. Gas volume density is likely to provide a more direct criterion for cluster formation, and other factors such as gas pressure or strength of encounter may also have an influence. We have produced a catalog of line identifications and equivalent width measurements for all absorption features in eight ultraviolet echelle quasar spectra. These spectra were selected as having the highest signal-to-noise among the HST/STIS spectra obtained with the E230M grating. We identify 56 metal-line systems toward the eight quasars, and present plots of detected transitions, aligned in velocity-space. We found that about 1/4 - 1/3 of the features in the Lya forest region, redward of the incidence of the Lyb forest, are metal lines. High ionization transitions are common. We see both O VI and C IV in 88 - 90% of the metal-line systems for which the spectra cover the expected wavelength. Si III is seen in 58%, while low ionization absorption in C II, Si II, and/or Al II is detected in 50% of the systems for which they are covered. The question of the existence of active tidal disruption around various dSph galaxies remains controversial. That debate often centers on the nature (bound vs. unbound) of extended populations of stars. However, the more fundamental issue of the very existence of the extended populations is still contentious. We present an evaluation of the debate centering on one particular dSph, Carina, for which claims both for and against the existence of stars beyond the King radius have been made. Our review includes an examination of all previous studies bearing on the Carina radial profile and shows that the survey method which achieves the highest detected dSph signal-to-background in the outer parts of the galaxy is the Washington M, T2 + DDO51 (MTD) filter approach from Paper II in this series. We then address statistical methods used to evaluate the reliability of MTD surveys in the presence of photometric errors and for which a new, a posteriori statistical analysis methodology is provided. Finally, these statistical methods are tested by new spectroscopy of stars in the MTD-selected Carina candidate sample. Of 74 candidate giants with follow-up spectroscopy, the MTD technique identified 61 new Carina members, including 8 stars outside the King radius. From a sample of 29 stars not initially identified as candidate Carina giants but that lie just outside of our selection criteria, 12 have radial velocities consistent with membership, including 5 extratidal stars. Carina is shown to have an extended population of giant stars extending to a major axis radius of 40' (1.44x the nominal King radius)., Comment: 56 pages, 10 figures. We have the unique opportunity to observe and model nearby streams around the two large Local Group spirals Milky Way and M31 in great detail. However, the detection of streams around other external galaxies is required to verify the general application of the derived results. We give a short summary of streams around other galaxies known in the literature, measuring for the first time the surface brightness of Malin's M83 stream with modern CCD imaging. A high-resolution HST/STIS spectrum (R=30,000) is presented of the three MgII-selected absorption systems (A, B, and C, clustered within 1500km/s) at z~0.93 toward the quasar PG 1206+459. A WIYN Gunn i-band image of the quasar field and spectroscopy of two galaxy candidates are also presented. A multi-phase medium is seen in all three systems, consistent with smaller, denser clouds producing low-ionization transitions (MgII, FeII, and SiII) and larger, diffuse clouds giving rise to high-ionization transitions (CIV, NV, and/or OVI). (1) System A, a multi-cloud, weak MgII absorber at z=0.9254, requires a super-solar metallicity in both low- and high-ionization phases, unless an alpha-group enhancement is included. With the unusually complex velocity structure resolved in the NV profiles, this system is unlikely to represent a traditional galaxy disk/corona. The most likely candidate host galaxy is a ~2L^*, apparently warped, spiral at an impact parameter of 43h^-1 kpc. (2) System B, at z=0.9276, has the strongest MgII absorption and has an approximately solar metallicity in the low-ionization phase. The smooth, broad high-ionization profiles may indicate a coronal structure similar to that of the Milky Way. The redshift of an L^* galaxy (z=0.9289), at an impact parameter of 38h^-1 kpc is consistent with the redshift of this system. (3) System C, at z=0.9342, has a single component in MgII, separated from the other two systems by ~1000km/s. It lacks the small, low-ionization cloud characteristic of an isolated single-cloud, weak MgII absorber. Its absorption properties are similar to the ``satellite clouds'' of classic strong MgII absorbers, so this could be a high-velocity cloud in the galaxy group responsible for the systems, possibly related to a 0.2L^* galaxy at an impact parameter of 43h^-1 kpc., Comment: 52 pages, 9 figures; to appear in ApJ, June 20, 2003

We describe first results of a spectroscopic probe of selected fields from the Grid Giant Star Survey. Multifiber spectroscopy of several hundred stars in a strip of eleven fields along delta approximately -17^{circ}, in the range 12 <~ alpha <~ 17 hours, reveals a group of 8 giants that have kinematical characteristics differing from the main field population, but that as a group maintain coherent, smoothly varying distances and radial velocities with position across the fields. Moreover, these stars have roughly the same abundance, according to their MgH+Mgb absorption line strengths. Photometric parallaxes place these stars in a semi-loop structure, arcing in a contiguous distribution between 5.7 and 7.9 kpc from the Galactic center. The spatial, kinematical, and abundance coherence of these stars suggests that they are part of a diffuse stream of tidal debris, and one roughly consistent with a wrapped, leading tidal arm of the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal galaxy., Comment: 8 pages including 4 figures. Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 images of Hickson Compact Group 79, Seyfert's Sextet, are presented. Both point sources and extended sources detected on the three WF chips were photometered in four filters: F336W, F439W, F555W, and F814W. Unlike other HCGs that have been imaged with HST, there do not appear to be any candidate young star clusters among the detected point sources. The majority of the point sources that may be star clusters associated with the Sextet have red colors consistent with stellar populations older than 1 Gyr. A similar conclusion is drawn with regard to the extended sources. The majority of these appear to be background galaxies, but a few candidate dwarf galaxies are identified as potentially associated with Seyfert's Sextet. However, no blue, star forming objects similar to the tidal dwarf galaxy candidates identified in other HCGs are found among the extended objects identified in this study. A redshift for one dwarf galaxy candidate was measured from a spectrum obtained with the Hobby-Eberly Telescope, and this object was found to have a redshift similar to NGC6027e, the discordant spiral formerly identified as a member of this compact group. The HST observations presented here and previous radio observations of the neutral gas content of this group suggest that the interactions that have taken place in the Sextet only redistributed the stars from the member galaxies within the group. We present a large area photometric survey of the Ursa Minor dSph. We identify UMi giant star candidates extending to ~3 deg from the center of the dSph. Comparison to previous catalogues of stars within the tidal radius of UMi suggests that our photometric luminosity classification is 100% accurate. Over a large fraction of the survey area, blue horizontal branch stars associated with UMi can also be identified. The spatial distribution of both the UMi giant stars and the BHB stars are remarkably similar, and a large fraction of both samples of stars are found outside the tidal radius of UMi. An isodensity contour map of the stars within the tidal radius of UMi reveals two morphological peculiarities: (1) The highest density of dSph stars is offset from the center of symmetry of the outer isodensity contours. (2) The overall shape of the outer contours appear S-shaped. We find that previously determined King profiles with ~50' tidal radii do not fit well the distribution of our UMi stars. A King profile with a larger tidal radius produces a reasonable fit, however a power law with index -3 provides a better fit for radii > 20'. The existence of UMi stars at large distances from the core of the galaxy, the peculiar morphology of the dSph within its tidal radius, and the shape of its surface density profile all suggest that UMi is evolving significantly due to the tidal influence of the Milky Way. However, the photometric data on UMi stars alone does not allow us to determine if the candidate extratidal stars are now unbound or if they remain bound to the dSph within an extended dark matter halo. We are exploring the extended stellar distributions of Galactic satellite galaxies and globular clusters. For seven objects studied thus far, the observed profile departs from a King function at large r, revealing a ``break population'' of stars. In our sample, the relative density of the ``break'' correlates to the inferred M/L of these objects. We discuss opposing hypotheses for this trend: (1) Higher M/L objects harbor more extended dark matter halos that support secondary, bound, stellar ``halos''. (2) The extended populations around dwarf spheroidals (and some clusters) consist of unbound, extratidal debris from their parent objects, which are undergoing various degrees of tidal disruption.
