To shed light on the time evolution of local star formation episodes in M33, we study the association between 566 Giant Molecular Clouds (GMCs), identified through the CO (J=2-1) IRAM-all-disk survey, and 630 Young Stellar Cluster Candidates (YSCCs), selected via Spitzer-24~$\mu$m emission. The spatial correlation between YSCCs and GMCs is extremely strong, with a typical separation of 17~pc, less than half the CO(2--1) beamsize, illustrating the remarkable physical link between the two populations. GMCs and YSCCs follow the HI filaments, except in the outermost regions where the survey finds fewer GMCs than YSCCs, likely due to undetected, low CO-luminosity clouds. The GMCs have masses between 2$\times 10^4$ and 2$\times 10^6$ M$_\odot$ and are classified according to different cloud evolutionary stages: inactive clouds are 32$\%$ of the total, classified clouds with embedded and exposed star formation are 16$\%$ and 52$\%$ of the total respectively. Across the regular southern spiral arm, inactive clouds are preferentially located in the inner part of the arm, possibly suggesting a triggering of star formation as the cloud crosses the arm. Some YSCCs are embedded star-forming sites while the majority have GALEX-UV and H$\alpha$ counterparts with estimated cluster masses and ages. The distribution of the non-embedded YSCC ages peaks around 5~Myrs with only a few being as old as 8--10~Myrs. These age estimates together with the number of GMCs in the various evolutionary stages lead us to conclude that 14~Myrs is a typical lifetime of a GMC in M33, prior to cloud dispersal. The inactive and embedded phases are short, lasting about 4 and 2~Myrs respectively. We investigate the role of the H_2^+ channel on H_2 molecule formation during the collapse of primordial gas clouds immersed in strong radiation fields which are assumed to have the shape of a diluted black-body spectra with temperature T_rad. Since the photodissociation rate of H_2^+ depends on its level population, we take full account of the vibrationally-resolved H_2^+ kinetics. We find that in clouds under soft but intense radiation fields with spectral temperature T_rad < 7000 K, the H_2^+ channel is the dominant H_2 formation process. On the other hand, for harder spectra with T_rad > 7000 K, the H^- channel takes over H_2^+ in the production of molecular hydrogen. We calculate the critical radiation intensity needed for supermassive star formation by direct collapse and examine its dependence on the H_2^+ level population. Under the assumption of local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) level population, the critical intensity is underestimated by a factor of a few for soft spectra with T_rad < 7000 K. For harder spectra, the value of the critical intensity is not affected by the level population of H_2^+. This result justifies previous estimates of the critical intensity assuming LTE populations since radiation sources like young and/or metal-poor galaxies are predicted to have rather hard spectra., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, submitted to MNRAS

The cosmological recombination of H and He at z \sim 1000 and the formation of H2 during the dark ages produce a non-thermal photon excess in the Wien tail of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) blackbody spectrum. Here we compute the effect of these photons on the H- photodetachment and H2+ photodissociation processes. We discuss the implications for the chemical evolution of the Universe in the post-recombination epoch, emphasizing how important a detailed account of the full vibrational manifold of H2 and H2+ in the chemical network is. We find that the final abundances of H2, H2+, H3+ and HD are significantly smaller than in previous calculations that neglected the effect of non-thermal photons. The suppression is mainly caused by extra hydrogen recombination photons and could affect the formation rate of first stars. Supermassive stars and quasi-stars (massive stars with a central black hole) are both considered as potential progenitors for the formation of supermassive black holes. They are expected to form from rapidly accreting protostars in massive primordial halos. We explore how long rapidly accreting protostars remain on the Hayashi track, implying large protostellar radii and weak accretion luminosity feedback. We assess the potential role of energy production in the nuclear core, and determine what regulates the evolution of such protostars into quasi-stars or supermassive stars. We follow the contraction of characteristic mass scales in rapidly accreting protostars, and infer the timescales for them to reach nuclear densities. We compare the characteristic timescales for nuclear burning with those for which the extended protostellar envelope can be maintained. We find that the extended envelope can be maintained up to protostellar masses of 3.6x10^8 \dot{m}^3 solar, where \dot{m} denotes the accretion rate in solar masses per year. We expect the nuclear core to exhaust its hydrogen content in 7x10^6 yrs. If accretion rates \dot{m}>>0.14 can still be maintained at this point, a black hole may form within the accreting envelope, leading to a quasi-star. Alternatively, the accreting object will gravitationally contract to become a main-sequence supermassive star. Due to the limited gas reservoir in dark matter halos with 10^7 solar masses, the accretion rate onto the central object may drop at late times, implying the formation of supermassive stars as the typical outcome of direct collapse. Within the precise cosmological framework provided by the Lambda-Cold Dark Matter model and standard Big Bang nucleosynthesis, the chemical evolution of the pregalactic gas can now be followed with accuracy limited only by the uncertainties on the reaction rates. Starting during the recombination era, the formation of the first molecules and molecular ions containing hydrogen, deuterium, helium, and lithium was severely hindered by the low density of the expanding universe, the intensity of the cosmic radiation field, and the absence of solid catalyzers. Molecular hydrogen and deuterated hydrogen, the most abundant species formed in the gas phase prior to structure formation, played a fundamental role in the cooling of the gas clouds that gave birth to the first stellar generation, contributing to determine the scale of fragmentation. Primordial molecules also interacted with the photons of the cosmic background via resonant scattering, absorption and emission. In this review we examine the current status of the chemistry of the early universe and discuss the most relevant reactions for which uncertainties still exist from theory or laboratory experiments. The properties of young stellar clusters (YSCs) in M33, identified from the center out to about twice the size of the bright star-forming disk,are investigated. We find 915 discrete MIR sources as far as the extent of the warped HI disk, i.e. 16 kpc from the galaxy center. Their surface density has a steep radial decline beyond 4.5 kpc, and flattens out beyond the optical radius at 8.5 kpc. We are able to identify YSCs out to 12 kpc. At large galactocentric radii, the paucity of very luminous clusters and the relevance of hot dust emission become evident from the analysis of the bolometric and MIR luminosity functions. The YSC mass and size are correlated with a log-log slope of 2.09, similar to that measured for giant molecular clouds in M33 and the Milky Way, which represent the protocluster environment. We formulate a vibrationally resolved kinetics for molecular hydrogen and its cation in the primordial Universe chemistry. Formation, destruction and relaxation processes for each vibrational level are studied and included as chemical pathways of the present model. The fractional abundance of each vibrational level as a function of the redshift is given: a strong deviation from the Boltzmann distribution is found at low $z$. A discussion of the results is provided, also evaluating the effects of relaxation processes on the level populations. The relative efficiencies of the chemical pathways that can lead to the destruction of LiH and LiH+ molecules, conjectured to be present in the primordial gas and to control molecular cooling processes in the gravitational collapse of the post-recombination era, are revisited by using accurate quantum calculations for the several reactions involved. The new rates are employed to survey the behavior of the relative abundance of these molecules at redshifts of interest for early universe conditions. We investigate the nature of 24micron sources in M33 which have weak or no associated Halpha emission. Both bright evolved stars and embedded star forming regions are visible as compact infrared sources in the 8 and 24micron maps of M33 and contribute to the more diffuse and faint emission in these bands. Can we distinguish the two populations? We carry out deep CO J=2-1 and J=1-0 line searches at the location of compact mid-IR sources to unveil an ongoing star formation process. We use different assumptions to estimate cloud masses from pointed observations and analyze if SED and mid-IR colours can be used to discriminate between evolved stars and star forming regions. Molecular emission has been detected at the location of several sources at the level of 0.3 K km/s or higher in at least one of the CO rotational lines. Even though there are no giant molecular clouds beyond 4kpc in M33, our deep observations have revealed that clouds of smaller mass are very common. Sources which are known to be evolved variable stars show weaker or undetectable CO lines. Evolved stars occupy a well defined region of the IRAC color-color diagrams. Star forming regions are scattered throughout a larger area even though the bulk of the distribution has different IRAC colors than evolved variable stars. We estimate that about half of the 24 micron sources without an Halpha counterpart are genuine embedded star forming regions. Sources with faint but compact Halpha emission have an incomplete Initial Mass Function (IMF) at the high-mass end and are compatible with a population of young clusters with a stochastically sampled, universal IMF., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

Context. Abundances of iron-peak and alpha-elements are poorly known in Orion, and the available measurements yield contradictory results. Aims. We measure accurate and homogeneous elemental abundances of the Orion subgroups ONC and OB1b, and search for abundance differences across the Orion complex. Methods. We present FLAMES/UVES spectroscopic observations of 20 members of the ONC and OB1b. We measured radial velocity, veiling, effective temperature using two spectroscopic methods, and determined the chemical abundances of Fe, Na, Al, Si, Ca, Ti, and Ni using the code MOOG. We also performed a new consistent analysis of spectra previously analyzed by our group. Results. We find three new binaries in the ONC, two in OB1b, and three non-members in OB1b (two of them most likely being OB1a/25 Ori members). Veiling only affects one target in the ONC, and the effective temperatures derived using two spectroscopic techniques agree within the errors. The ONC and OB1b are characterized by a small scatter in iron abundance, with mean [Fe/H] values of -0.11+/-0.08 and -0.05+/-0.05, respectively. We find a small scatter in all the other elemental abundances. We confirm that P1455 is a metal-rich star in the ONC. Conclusions. We conclude that the Orion metallicity is not above the solar value. The OB1b group might be slightly more metal-rich than the ONC; on the other hand, the two subgroups have similar almost solar abundances of iron-peak and alpha-elements with a high degree of homogeneity., Comment: Accepted by Astronomy and Astrophysics. 16 figures, 8 tables

We present a new analysis of the stellar population of the Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC) based on multi-band optical photometry and spectroscopy. We study the color-color diagrams in BVI, plus a narrow-band filter centered at 6200A, finding evidences that intrinsic color scales valid for main-sequence dwarfs are incompatible with the ONC, while a better agreement is found employing synthetic intrinsic colors obtained constraining the typical lower surface gravity of young stars. We refine these model colors even further, empirically, by comparison with a sample of ONC stars with no accretion and no extinction. We consider the stars with known spectral types from the literature, and add 65 newly classified stars from slit spectroscopy and 182 M-type from narrow-band photometry; in this way we isolate a sample of about 1000 stars with known spectral type. We introduce a new method to self-consistently derive reddening and accretion excess from the location of each star in the BVI color-color diagram. This enables us to accurately determine the extinction of the ONC members. We adopt a lower distance for the ONC than previously assumed, based on recent parallax measurements. With a careful choice also of the spectral type-temperature transformation, we produce the new H-R diagram of the ONC population, more populated than previous works. With respect to previous works, we find higher luminosity for late-type stars and a lower luminosity for early types. We determine the age distribution of the population, peaking at 2-3 Myr, a higher age than previously estimated. We study the distribution of the members in the mass-age plane, and find that taking into account selection effects due to incompleteness removes an apparent correlation between mass and age. Source I in the Orion-KL nebula is believed to be the nearest example of a massive star still in the main accretion phase. It is thus one of the best cases for studying the properties of massive protostars to constrain high-mass star formation theories. Near-infrared radiation from source I escapes through the cavity opened by the OMC1 outflow and is scattered by dust towards our line of sight. The reflected spectrum offers a unique possibility of observing the emission from the innermost regions of the system and probing the nature of source I and its immediate surroundings. We obtained moderately high spectral-resolution (R~9000) observations of the near-infrared diffuse emission in several locations around source I/Orion-KL. We observed a widespread rich absorption line spectrum that we compare with cool stellar photospheres and protostellar accretion disk models. The spectrum is broadly similar to strongly veiled, cool, low-gravity stellar photospheres in the range Teff~3500-4500 K, luminosity class I-III. An exact match explaining all features has not been found, and a plausible explanation is that a range of different temperatures contribute to the observed absorption spectrum. The 1D velocity dispersions implied by the absorption spectra, sigma~30 km/s, can be explained by the emission from a disk around a massive, mstar~10 Msun, protostar that is accreting at a high rate, mdot~3x10^{-3} Msun/yr. Our observations suggest that the near-infrared reflection spectrum observed in the Orion-KL region is produced close to source I and scattered to our line of sight in the OMC1 outflow cavity. The spectrum allows us to exclude source I being a very large, massive protostar rotating at breakup speed. We suggest that the absorption spectrum is produced in a disk surrounding a ~10 Msun protostar, accreting from its disk at a high rate of a few 10^{-3} Msun/yr., Comment: Accepted for publication on A&A

We present U, B, V, I broad-band, 6200A TiO medium-band and Halpha photometry of the Orion Nebula Cluster obtained with the WFI imager at the ESO/MPI 2.2 telescope. The nearly-simultaneous observations cover the entire ONC in a field of about 34x34 arcmin. They enable us to determine stellar colors avoiding the additional scatter in the photometry induced by stellar variability typical of pre-main sequence stars. We identify 2,612 point-like sources in I band, 58%, 43% and 17% of them detected also in V, B and U, respectively. 1040 sources are identified in Halpha band. In this paper we present the observations, the calibration techniques, and the resulting catalog. We show the derived CMD of the population and discuss the completeness of our photometry. We define a spectro-photometric TiO index from the fluxes in V, I, and TiO-band. We find a correlation between the index and the spectral type valid for M-type stars, that is accurate to better than 1 spectral sub-class for M3-M6 types and better than 2 spectral subclasses for M0-M2 types. This allows us to newly classify 217 stars. We subtract from our Halpha photometry the photospheric continuum at its wavelength, deriving calibrated line excess for the full sample. This represents the largest Halpha star catalog obtained to date on the ONC. We explore the effects of magnetic energy dissipation on the formation of the first stars. For this purpose, we follow the evolution of primordial chemistry in the presence of magnetic fields in the post-recombination universe until the formation of the first virialized halos. From the point of virialization, we follow the protostellar collapse up to densities of $\sim10^{12}$ cm$^{-3}$ in a one-zone model. In the intergalactic medium (IGM), comoving field strengths of $\gtrsim0.1$ nG lead to Jeans masses of $10^8 M_\odot$ or more and thus delay gravitational collapse in the first halos until they are sufficiently massive. During protostellar collapse, we find that the temperature minimum at densities of $\sim10^3$ cm$^{-3}$ does not change significantly, such that the characteristic mass scale for fragmentation is not affected. However, we find a significant temperature increase at higher densities for comoving field strengths of $\gtrsim0.1$ nG. This may delay gravitational collapse, in particular at densities of $\sim10^9$ cm$^{-3}$, where the proton abundance drops rapidly and the main contribution to the ambipolar diffusion resistivity is due to collisions with Li$^+$. After the formation of the protostar, the increased gas temperatures may enhance the protostellar accretion rate. Our model confirms that initial weak magnetic fields may be amplified considerably during gravitational collapse and become dynamically relevant. Extremely red objects, identified in the early Spitzer Space Telescope observations of the bright-rimmed globule IC 1396A and photometrically classified as Class I protostars Class II T Tauri stars based on their mid-infrared colors, were observed spectroscopically at 5.5 to 38 microns (IRS), at the 22 GHz water maser frequency (GBT), and in the optical (Palomar). The sources photometrically identified as Class I are confirmed as objects dominated by accretion luminosity from dense envelopes, with accretion rates 1e-5 to 1e-6 Msun/yr. The ice/silicate absorption ratio in the envelope is exceptionally low for the IC 1396A protostars, compared to those in nearby star-forming regions, suggesting the envelope chemistry is altered by the radiation field or globule pressure. Only one 22 GHz water maser was detected in IC 1396A; its infrared counterpart has luminosity <0.1 Lsun, the first H2O maser from such a low-luminosity object. The objects photometrically classified as Class II are confirmed as classical T Tauri stars with warm, luminous disks. The disk properties change significantly with source luminosity: low-mass (G-K) stars have prominent 9-11 micron emission features due to amorphous silicates while higher-mass (A-F) stars have weaker features requiring abundant crystalline silicates. The distribution of Class I sources is concentrated within the molecular globule, while the Class II sources are more widely scattered. Combined with the spectral results, this suggests two phases of star formation, the first (4 Myr ago) leading to the widespread Class II sources and the central O star of IC 1396, and the second (<1 Myr ago) occurring within the globule., Comment: accepted to the Astrophysical Journal

Chandra gratings spectra of a sample of 15 massive OB stars were analyzed under the basic assumption that the X-ray emission is produced in an ensemble of shocks formed in the winds driven by these objects. Shocks develop either as a result of radiation-driven instabilities or due to confinement of the wind by relatively strong magnetic field, and since they are radiative, a simple model of their X-ray emission was developed that allows a direct comparison with observations. According to our model, the shock structures (clumps, complete or fractional shells) eventually become `cold' clouds in the X-ray sky of the star. As a result, it is expected that for large covering factors of the hot clumps, there is a high probability for X-ray absorption by the `cold' clouds, resulting in blue-shifted spectral lines. Our analysis has revealed that such a correlation indeed exists for the considered sample of OB stars. As to the temperature characteristics of the X-ray emission plasma, the studied OB stars fall in two groups: (i) one with plasma temperature limited to 0.1-0.4 keV; (ii) the other wtih X-rays produced in plasmas at considerably higher temperatures. Young stars on their way to the ZAMS evolve in significantly different ways depending on mass. While the theoretical and observational properties of low- and intermediate-mass stars are rather well understood and/or empirically tested, the situation for massive stars (>10-15 Msun) is, to say the least, still elusive. On theoretical grounds, the PMS evolution of these objects should be extremely short, or nonexistent at all. Observationally, despite a great deal of effort, the simple (or bold) predictions of simplified models of massive star formation/evolution have proved more difficult to be checked. Very low-mass stars and brown dwarfs can undergo pulsational instability excited by central deuterium burning during the initial phases of their evolution. We present the results of evolutionary and nonadiabatic linear stability models that show the presence of unstable fundamental modes. The pulsation periods vary bewteen ~5 hr for a 0.1 Msun star and ~1 hr for a 0.02 M$_\odot$ brown dwarf. The results are rather insensitive to variations in the input physics of the models. We present the results of a nonadiabatic, linear stability analysis of models of very low-mass stars (VLMSs) and brown dwarfs (BDs) during the deuterium burning phase in the center. We find unstable fundamental modes with periods varying between ~5 hr for a 0.1 Msun star and ~1 hr for a 0.02 Msun BD. The growth time of the instability decreases with decreasing mass and remains well below the deuterium burning time scale in the mass range considered (0.1--0.02 Msun). These results are robust against variations of the relevant input physics in the evolutionary models. We identify possible candidates for pulsational variability among known VLMSs and BDs in nearby star forming regions whose location in the HR diagram falls within or close to the boundary of the instability strip. The process that leads to the formation and early evolution of low-mass stars is in a broad sense well understood theoretically and carefully traced observationally. The largest uncertainties in this framework reside in the poorly known initial conditions for the origin and gravitational collapse of dense cores within molecular clouds. In this review, we will discuss the evidence for an accelerated pattern of star formation in clusters and associations, the physical origin of this phenomenon, and the age spread in low-mass star forming regions. On the latter issue, we will show how the observation of lithium depletion in young clusters, such as the Orion Nebula Cluster and the Upper Scorpius association, can provide an independent estimate of their ages and age spreads with important implications on the understanding of the initial conditions and history of star formation., Comment: to appear in Proc. of the 13th Cool Stars, Stellar Systems and the Sun Workshop, ESA-SP, Eds. We report the evidence that several low-mass stars (<~0.4 Msun) of the Orion and Upper Scorpius clusters have lithium abundances well below the interstellar value. Young A-type stars in the pre--main-sequence (PMS) evolutionary phase are particularly interesting objects since they cover the mass range (1.5-4 solar ma sses) which is most sensitive to the internal conditions inherited during the protostellar phase. In particular, they undergo a process of thermal relaxation from which they emerge as fully radiative objects contracting towards the main sequence. A-type stars also show intense surface activity (including winds, accretion, pulsations) whose origin is still not completely understood, and infrared excesses related to the presence of circumstellar disks and envelopes. Disks display significant evolution in the dust properties, likely signalling the occurrence of protoplanetary growth. We compare evolutionary models for protoplanetary discs that include disc winds with observational determinations of the disc lifetime and accretion rate in Taurus. Using updated estimates for stellar ages in Taurus, together with published classifications, we show that the evolution of the disc fraction with stellar age is similar to that derived for ensembles of stars within young clusters. Around 30 percent of stars lose their discs within 1 Myr, while the remainder have disc lifetimes that are typically in the 1-10 Myr range. We show that the latter range of ages is consistent with theoretical models for disc evolution, provided that there is a dispersion of around 0.5 in the log of the initial disc mass. The same range of initial conditions brackets the observed variation in the accretion rate of Classical T Tauri stars at a given age. We discuss the expected lifetime of discs in close binary systems, and show that our models predict that the disc lifetime is almost constant for separations exceeding 10 au. This implies a low predicted fraction of binaries that pair a Classical T Tauri star with a Weak-lined T Tauri star, and is in better agreement with observations of the disc lifetime in binaries than disc models that do not include disc mass loss in a wind., Comment: MNRAS, in press

To understand the formation of stellar groups, one must first document carefully the birth pattern within real clusters and associations. In this study of Taurus-Auriga, we combine pre-main-sequence ages from our own evolutionary tracks with stellar positions from observational surveys. Aided by the extensive, millimeter data on the molecular clouds, we develop a picture of the region's history. Star formation began, at a relatively low level and in a spatially diffuse manner, at least 10 Myr in the past. Within the last few million years, new stars have been produced at an accelerating rate, almost exclusively within a confined group of striated cloud filaments. The gas both inside and around the filaments appears to be in force balance. Thus, the appearance of the filaments is due to global, quasi-static contraction of the parent cloud material. Gravity drives this contraction and shock dissipation mediates it, but the internal motion of the gas does not appear to be turbulent. The accelerating nature of recent star formation means that the condensation of cloud cores is a threshold phenomenon, requiring a minimum background density. Other, nearby cloud regions, including Lupus and Chamaeleon, contain some locales that have attained this density, and others that have not. Observations of binaries have traditionally provided the means for ascertaining stellar masses. Here, we use the published data on 8 pre-main-sequence pairs to gauge the accuracy of our own, recently calculated, evolutionary tracks (Palla & Stahler 1999). We consider both eclipsing, double-lined spectroscopic binaries, which provide the mass of each star separately, and non-eclipsing, double-lined systems, which yield only the ratio. We also analyze the visual, quadruple system GG Tau, for which the sum of the two component masses follows from observations of the circumbinary disk. In almost all cases, our theoretically derived masses or mass ratios are in good agreement with the empirical values. For two binaries (NTTS 162814-2427 and P1540), the observational results are still too uncertain for a proper comparison. We also find that the derived contraction ages within each pre-main-sequence pair are nearly equal. This result extends earlier findings regarding visual pairs, and indicates that the components of all binaries form in proximity, perhaps within the same dense cloud core. Finally, our study reveals that the Trapezium star BM Ori is very young, since both the star itself and its companion have contraction ages less than 10^5 years., Comment: 25 pages, 4 figures, Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal (May 2001)

We present the initial results of a study aimed at computing the global effects of the X-ray ionization due to young stars within a molecular cloud that forms stars with a standard IMF at a rate accelerating with time. We model the gas distribution of the cloud as a fractal of dimension 2.3. We introduce the concept of a "Roentgen sphere" as the region around each PMS star where the ionization rate due to stellar X-rays exceeds that due to interstellar cosmic rays. Using values of the X-ray luminosity typical of T Tauri stars, we find that within the Roentgen radius the average ionization rate is increased by a factor 4 to 20 with respect to the value obtained from cosmic-rays., Comment: To be published in "Stellar Clusters and Associations", eds. We present the results of a recent near-infrared survey of the fields surrounding a large sample of intermediate-mass pre-main-sequence (Herbig Ae/Be) stars. While late-type Be and Ae stars are never associated with conspicuous groups of young lower mass stars, early-type Be stars are usually found within rich clusters. This finding has been tested against possible biases due to different mass sensitivity of the observations or dynamical dissipation of the clusters around older stars. Our results suggest that massive stars are preferentially produced in dense stellar clusters, possibly by dynamical interaction rather than by standard gas accretion as in the case of lower mass stars. The possibility that the observed correlation between maximum stellar mass and cluster richness could be the results of random sampling the cluster size spectrum and the stellar IMF is also discussed. The James Clerk Maxwell Telescope has been used to obtain submillimeter and millimeter continuum photometry of a sample of 30 IRAS sources previously studied in molecular lines and centimeter radio continuum. All the sources have IRAS colours typical of very young stellar objects (YSOs) and are associated with dense gas. In spite of their high luminosities (L>10000 solar units), only ten of these sources are also associated with a radio counterpart. In 17 cases we could identify a clear peak of millimeter emission associated with the IRAS source, while in 9 sources the millimeter emission was extended or faint and a clear peak could not be identified; upper limits were found in 4 cases only. Using simple greybody fitting model to the observed SED, we derive global properties of the circumstellar dust. The dust temperature varies from 24 K to 45 K, while the exponent of the dust emissivity vs frequency power-law spans a range 1.56

IRAS 23385+6053 is a Young Stellar Object with luminosity 16,000 solar luminosities at a kinematic distance of 4.9 kpc. This candidate precursor of an ultracompact HII region is associated with a millimeter source detected at the JCMT but is undetected at centimeter wavelengths with the VLA. We observed this source with the OVRO millimeter array at 3.4 mm in the continuum, HCO+(1-0), H13CO+(1-0) and SiO(v=0, 2-1) line emission, and with CAM aboard ISO at 6.75 and 15 um. The IRAS source is coincident with a 3.4 mm compact (r~0.048 pc) and massive (M~370 solar masses) core, which is undetected at 15 um to a 3 sigma level of 6 mJy; this is compatible with the derived H2 column density of 2x10(24) and the estimated visual extinction of about 2000 mag. We find L(submm)/L(bol)>10(-3) and M(env)/M(star)>>1, typical of Class 0 objects. The source is also associated with a compact outflow characterized by a size similar to the core radius, a dynamical timescale of about 7,000 years, and a mass loss rate of about 10(-3) solar masses/year. The axis of the outflow is oriented nearly perpendicular to the plane of the sky, ruling out the possibility that the non-detection at 15 um is the result of a geometric effect. All these properties suggest that IRAS 23385+6053 is the first example of a bona fide massive Class 0 object.

We show that gaseous \HI disks of primordial composition irradiated by an external radiation field can develop a multiphase medium with temperatures between 10^2 and 10^4 K due to the formation of molecular hydrogen. For a given \HI column density there is a critical value of the radiation field below which only the cold \HI phase can exist. Due to a time decreasing quasar background, the gas starts cooling slowly after recombination until the lowest stable temperature in the warm phase is reached at a critical redshift $z=z_{cr}$. Below this redshift the formation of molecular hydrogen promotes a rapid transition towards the cold \HI phase. We find that disks of protogalaxies with $10^{20}\simlt N_{HI}\simlt 10^{21} cm^{-2}$ are gravitationally stable at $T\sim 10^4$ K and can start their star formation history only at $z \simlt z_{cr}\sim 2$, after the gas in the central portion of the disk has cooled to temperatures $T\simlt 300$ K. Such a delayed starbust phase in galaxies of low gas surface density and low dynamical mass can disrupt the disks and cause them to fade away. The minimum mass that a virialized gas cloud must have in order to be able to cool in a Hubble time is computed, using a detailed treatment of the chemistry of molecular hydrogen. With a simple model for halo profiles, we reduce the problem to that of numerically integrating a system of chemical equations. The results agree well with numerically expensive 3D simulations, and our approach has the advantage of rapidly being able to explore large regions of parameter space. The minimum baryonic mass M_b is found to be strongly redshift dependent, dropping from 10^6 solar masses at z=15 to 5000 solar masses at z=100 as molecular cooling becomes effective. For z>>100, M_b rises again, as CMB photons inhibit H_2-formation through the H^- channel. Finally, for z>>200, the H_2^+ channel for H_2-formation becomes effective, driving M_b down towards 10^3 solar masses. With a standard CDM power spectrum with sigma_8=0.7, this implies that a fraction 10^{-3} of all baryons may have formed luminous objects by z=30, which could be sufficient to reheat the universe., Comment: Minor modifications to match published version.
