Abstract

Magnetocaloric materials have received significant attention of research community as they can minimize the use of harmful gases (CFCs, HFCs) and render eco-friendly refrigeration. Heusler alloys (Ni2MnGa) are known for their magnetocaloric effects, which make them useful as energy efficient and eco-friendly refrigerating materials. Magnetocaloric properties significantly depend on the composition of these alloys. Ni-Mn-Ga is one of the interesting Heusler systems, which exhibits magnetocaloric properties. In the present study, we performed the thermodynamic optimization of two sub binaries of the Ni-Mn-Ga system: Mn-Ga and Ni-Ga, using CALPHAD approach. A Modified Quasichemical Model (MQM) was used to describe the thermodynamic properties of the liquid solutions in both the binaries. Both the binaries were combined with Mn-Ni to develop a self-consistent thermodynamic database for Ni-Mn-Ga. In order to resolve the existing experimental discrepancies in the Mn-Ga and Ni-Ga system, few alloy compositions were prepared and analyzed using differential thermal analysis. Finally, the developed thermodynamic database was used to calculate the ternary isothermal section of the Ni-Mn-Ga (Heusler alloy) system at 1073 K with a proposed phase region for magnetocaloric applications., Comment: 26 Pages, 10 Figures

Abstract

Magnetic refrigeration is an active research area considering its potential to replace gas-based refrigeration systems, which are detrimental to the environment owing to chlorofluorocarbon emissions. Heusler alloys such as Ni2MnGa are known for their magnetocaloric effect, and addition of elements like Cu has increased the refrigeration capacity of the system. Magnetocaloric properties are a strict function of composition, and few alloy compositions in Mn–Ni–Cu–Ga can exhibit enhanced magnetocaloric properties. Most of the previous works have focused on Mn–Ni–Cu–Ga, and the enhancement of magnetocaloric properties is attributed to adding Cu. However, no magnetocaloric material has been reported in the Mn–Ni–Cu system, which could potentially show benefit from Cu addition. Hence, in the present study, thermodynamic optimization of the Mn–Ni–Cu-based ternary system and its three sub-binaries, Mn–Cu, Mn–Ni, and Ni–Cu, are performed using the CALculation of PHAse Diagram approach. In order to capture the liquidus in the Mn–Ni system and congruent transformation, a few alloy compositions were prepared and analyzed using differential thermal analysis. Using the current optimized database, temperatures are calculated as a function of Mn, Ni, and Cu compositions to ascertain the phase transition between the austenite and martensite phases, which occur around room temperature. Abstract

Over the ages, efforts have been made to use composite design to reinforce metals and alloys in order to increase their strength and modulus. On the other hand, nature herself improves the strength, ductility, stiffness and toughness of materials by strengthening them with liquids having zero strength/modulus. Here, emulating nature, efforts have been made to develop a new class of tin based alloy/composite with liquid metal reinforcement (LMM). Based on thermodynamic calculations, a composition has been designed such that on melting and casting it forms a solid metal (tin solid solution) and the eutectic mixture remains in liquid form at room temperature. The composite structure named as LMM shows multifold improvement in hardness, strength, ductility, toughness and wear resistance as compared to conventional solder alloys. A Finite Element Method (FEM) based simulation shows strain distribution in the composite which results in the unique behavior. The LMM also shows a negative coefficient of thermal expansion which is further verified using in-situ microscopy and thermodynamic calculations.

Abstract

Around 80% of the FeCr produced worldwide is utilized in stainless steelmaking. Thus, the growth of the stainless‐steel industry is directly related to FeCr production. Although the FeCr production in submerged arc furnace (SAF) is fairly stabilized, new challenges have emerged in the furnace operation due to the depletion of lumpy ores, high SiO2 content, and lower Cr/Fe ratio in the low‐grade ores. In this regard, the addition of various fluxes such as quartz, magnesite, and bauxite are considered to improve the Cr recovery in SAF operation, particularly in the context of low‐grade ores. In this study, thermodynamic calculations are performed to discuss the effect of various additives (MgO in magnesite, Al2O3 as bauxite, and SiO2 in quartz form) on Cr recovery and slag formation temperature. In addition, a comprehensive thermodynamic‐based process model has been developed for FeCr operation that captures the most important thermochemical reactions. The modeling results are compared with the plant data, and suitable modifications in the slag compositions are made to maximize Cr recovery. Moreover, new plant trials are performed with modified slag composition, and its effect on Cr recovery is also discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
