Using a combination of liquid-phase X-ray spectroscopy experiments and small-scale calculations we have gained new insights into the speciation of halozincate anions in ionic liquids (ILs). Both core and valence X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) experiments were performed directly on the liquid-phase ILs, supplemented by Zn 1s X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were carried out on both 1- and 2- halozincate anions, in both a generalised solvation model SMD (Solvation Model based on Density) and the gas phase, to give XP spectra and total energy differences; time-dependent DFT was used to calculate XANES spectra. Speciation judgements were made using a combination of the shape and width of the experimental spectra, and visual matches to the calculated spectra. For 2- halozincate anions, excellent matches were found between the experimental and calculated XP spectra, clearly showing that only 2- halozincate anions were present at all zinc halide mole fractions, x , studied. At specific values of x (0.33, 0.50, 0.60) only one halozincate anion was present; equilibria of different halozincate anions at those values of x were not observed. All findings show that chlorozincate anion and bromozincate anion speciation matched at the same x . Based on the results, predictions are made of the halozincate anion speciation for all values of x up to 0.67. Caution is advised when using differences in calculated total energies obtained from DFT to judge halozincate anion speciation, even when the SMD was employed, as predictions based on total energy differences did not always match the findings from the experimental and calculated spectra. Our findings clearly establish that the combination of high-quality experimental data from multiple spectroscopies and a wide range of calculated structures are essential to have high confidence in halozincate anion speciation identification.

X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and ab initio calculations show that fully alkylated onium cation electronic structure can be tuned using both the alkyl chains and the central onium atom. The key for tuning the central onium atom is methyl versus longer alkyl chains, allowing selection of the optimum cation for a wide range of applications, including catalysis and biocides.

In electrochemical energy storage devices, the interface between the electrode and the electrolyte plays a crucial role. A solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) is formed on the electrode surface due to spontaneous decomposition of the electrolyte, which in turn controls the dynamics of ion migration during charge and discharge cycles. However, the dynamic nature of the SEI means that its chemical structure evolves over time and as a function of the applied bias; thus, a true operando study is extremely valuable. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) is a widely used technique to understand the surface electronic and chemical properties, but the use of ultrahigh vacuum in standard instruments is a major hurdle for their utilization in measuring wet electrochemical processes. Herein, we introduce a 3-electrode electrochemical cell to probe the behavior of Na ions and the formation of SEI at the interface of an ionic liquid (IL) electrolyte and an aluminum electrode under operando conditions. A system containing 0.5 molar NaTFSI dissolved in the IL [BMIM][TFSI] was investigated using an Al working electrode and Pt counter and reference electrodes. By optimizing the scan rate of both XPS and cyclic voltammetry (CV) techniques, we captured the formation and evolution of SEI chemistry using real-time spectra acquisition techniques. A CV scan rate of 2 mVs -1 was coupled with XPS snapshot spectra collected at 10 s per core level. The technique demonstrated here provides a platform for the chemical analysis of materials beyond batteries.

The absolute band edge positions and work function (Φ) are the key electronic properties of metal oxides that determine their performance in electronic devices and photocatalysis. However, experimental measurements of these properties often show notable variations, and the mechanisms underlying these discrepancies remain inadequately understood. In this work, we focus on ceria (CeO 2 ), a material renowned for its outstanding oxygen storage capacity, and combine theoretical and experimental techniques to demonstrate environmental modifications of its ionization potential (IP) and Φ. Under O-deficient conditions, reduced ceria exhibits a decreased IP and Φ with significant sensitivity to defect distributions. In contrast, the IP and Φ are elevated in O-rich conditions due to the formation of surface peroxide species. Surface adsorbates and impurities can further augment these variabilities under realistic conditions. We rationalize the shifts in energy levels by separating the individual contributions from bulk and surface factors, using hybrid quantum mechanical/molecular mechanical (QM/MM) embedded-cluster and periodic density functional theory (DFT) calculations supported by interatomic-potential-based electrostatic analyses. Our results highlight the critical role of on-site electrostatic potentials in determining the absolute energy levels in metal oxides, implying a dynamic evolution of band edges under catalytic conditions.

Using a combination of experiments and calculations, we have gained new insights into the nature of anion-cation interactions in ionic liquids (ILs). An X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS)-derived anion-dependent electrostatic interaction strength scale, determined using XPS core-level binding energies for IL cations, is presented here for 39 different anions, with at least 18 new anions included. Linear correlations of experimental XPS core-level binding energies for IL cations with (a) calculated core binding energies (ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations were used to generate high-quality model IL structures followed by single-point density functional theory (DFT) to obtain calculated core binding energies), (b) experimental XPS core-level binding energies for IL anions, and (c) other anion-dependent interaction strength scales led to three main conclusions. First, the effect of different anions on the cation can be related to ground-state interactions. Second, the variations of anion-dependent interactions with the identity of the anion are best rationalized in terms of electrostatic interactions and not occupied valence state/unoccupied valence state interactions or polarizability-driven interactions. Therefore, the XPS-derived anion-dependent interaction strength scale can be explained using a simple electrostatic model based on electrostatic site potentials. Third, anion-probe interactions, irrespective of the identity of the probe, are primarily electrostatic, meaning that our electrostatic interaction strength scale captures some inherent, intrinsic property of anions independent of the probe used to measure the interaction strength scale.

Bismuth-based coordination complexes are advantageous over other metal complexes, as bismuth is the heaviest nontoxic element with high spin-orbit coupling and potential optoelectronics applications. Herein, four bismuth halide-based coordination complexes [Bi 2 Cl 6 (phen-thio) 2 ] ( 1 ), [Bi 2 Br 6 (phen-thio) 2 ] ( 2 ), [Bi 2 I 6 (phen-thio) 2 ] ( 3 ), and [Bi 2 I 6 (phen-Me) 2 ] ( 4 ) were synthesized, characterized, and subjected to detailed photophysical studies. The complexes were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, powder X-ray diffraction, and NMR studies. Spectroscopic analyses of 1 - 4 in solutions of different polarities were performed to understand the role of the organic and inorganic components in determining the ground- and excited-state properties of the complexes. The photophysical properties of the complexes were characterized by ground-state absorption, steady-state photoluminescence, microsecond time-resolved photoluminescence, and absorption spectroscopy. Periodic density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed on the solid-state structures to understand the role of the organic and inorganic parts of the complexes. The studies showed that changing the ancillary ligand from chlorine (Cl) and bromine (Br) to iodine (I) bathochromically shifts the absorption band along with enhancing the absorption coefficient. Also, changing the halides (Cl, Br to I) affects the photoluminescent quantum yields of the ligand-centered (LC) emissive state without markedly affecting the lifetimes. The combined results confirmed that ground-state properties are strongly influenced by the inorganic part, and the lower-energy excited state is LC. This study paves the way to design novel bismuth coordination complexes for optoelectronic applications by rigorously choosing the ligands and bismuth salt.

Quantifying the crystallographic phases present at a surface is an important challenge in fields such as functional materials and surface science. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) is routinely employed in surface characterization to identify and quantify chemical species through core line analysis. Valence band (VB) spectra contain characteristic but complex features that provide information on the electronic density of states (DoS) and thus can be understood theoretically using density functional theory (DFT). Here, we present a method of fitting experimental photoemission spectra with DFT models for quantitative analysis of heterogeneous systems, specifically mapping the anatase to rutile ratio across the surface of mixed-phase TiO 2 thin films. The results were correlated with mapped photocatalytic activity measured using a resazurin-based smart ink. This method allows large-scale functional and surface composition mapping in heterogeneous systems and demonstrates the unique insights gained from DFT-simulated spectra on the electronic structure origins of complex VB spectral features.

Halide perovskites are promising photoelectrocatalytic materials. Their further development requires understanding of surface processes during electrochemistry. Thin films of tellurium-based vacancy-ordered perovskites with formula A 2 TeI 6 , A = Cs, methylammonium (MA), were deposited onto transparent conducting substrates using aerosol-assisted chemical vapor deposition. Thin film stability as electrodes and photoelectrodes was tested in dichloromethane containing tetrabutylammonium PF 6 (TBAPF 6 ). Using photoemission spectroscopy, we show that the formation of a solid electrolyte interphase on the surface of the Cs 2 TeI 6 , consisting of CsPF 6 , enhances the stability of the electrode and allows extended chopped-light chronoamperometry measurements at up to 1.1 V with a photocurrent density of 16 μA/cm 2 . In contrast, (CH 3 NH 3 ) 2 TeI 6 does not form a passivating layer and rapidly degrades upon identical electrochemical treatment. This demonstrates the importance of surface chemistry in halide perovskite electrochemistry and photoelectrocatalysis.

The solid electrolyte interphase in rechargeable Li-ion batteries, its dynamics and, significantly, its nanoscale structure and composition, hold clues to high-performing and safe energy storage. Unfortunately, knowledge of solid electrolyte interphase formation is limited due to the lack of in situ nano-characterization tools for probing solid-liquid interfaces. Here, we link electrochemical atomic force microscopy, three-dimensional nano-rheology microscopy and surface force-distance spectroscopy, to study, in situ and operando, the dynamic formation of the solid electrolyte interphase starting from a few 0.1 nm thick electrical double layer to the full three-dimensional nanostructured solid electrolyte interphase on the typical graphite basal and edge planes in a Li-ion battery negative electrode. By probing the arrangement of solvent molecules and ions within the electric double layer and quantifying the three-dimensional mechanical property distribution of organic and inorganic components in the as-formed solid electrolyte interphase layer, we reveal the nanoarchitecture factors and atomistic picture of initial solid electrolyte interphase formation on graphite-based negative electrodes in strongly and weakly solvating electrolytes., (© 2023. Bismuth halides with formula A 3 Bi 2 X 9 , where A is an inorganic or organic cation, show desirable properties as solar absorbers and luminescent materials. Control of structural and electronic dimensionality of these compounds is important to yield materials with good light absorption and charge transport. Here we report mechanochemical reaction of (CH 3 NH 3 ) 3 Bi 2 Br 9 with SnBr 2 at room temperature in air, yielding a material with strong absorption across the visible region. We attribute this to mixed valence doping of Sn(II) and Sn(IV) on the Bi site. X-Ray diffraction shows no secondary phases, even after heating at 200 °C to improve crystallinity. X-Ray photoelectron spectroscopy suggests the presence of Sn(II) and Sn(IV) states. A similar approach to dope Sn into the iodide analogue (CH 3 NH 3 ) 3 Bi 2 I 9 was unsuccessful.

A series of imidazolium-based symmetrical and asymmetrical dicationic ionic liquids (DcILs) with alkyl spacers of different length and with [FeCl 3 Br] - as counter ion have been synthesized. The synthesized DcILs are characterized by using FTIR and Raman spectroscopy as well as mass spectrometry, along with single-crystal XRD analysis. Physicochemical properties such as solubility, thermal stability and magnetic susceptibility are also measured. These compounds show low melting points, good solubility in water and organic solvents, thermal stability, and paramagnetism. The products of molar susceptibility and temperature (χ mol ⋅T) for the synthesized DcILs have been found between 4.05 to 4.79 emu mol -1  K Oe -1 and effective magnetic moment values have also been determined to be compared to that expected from the spin-only approximation., (© 2023 The Authors. Transparent conducting oxides have become ubiquitous in modern optoelectronics. However, the number of oxides that are transparent to visible light and have the metallic-like conductivity necessary for applications is limited to a handful of systems that have been known for the past 40 years. In this work, we use hybrid density functional theory and defect chemistry analysis to demonstrate that tri-rutile zinc antimonate, ZnSb 2 O 6 , is an ideal transparent conducting oxide and to identify gallium as the optimal dopant to yield high conductivity and transparency. To validate our computational predictions, we have synthesized both powder samples and single crystals of Ga-doped ZnSb 2 O 6 which conclusively show behavior consistent with a degenerate transparent conducting oxide. Valence electronic structure is crucial for understanding and predicting reactivity. Valence non-resonant X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (NRXPS) provides a direct method for probing the overall valence electronic structure. However, it is often difficult to separate the varying contributions to NRXPS; for example, contributions of solutes in solvents or functional groups in complex molecules. In this work we show that valence resonant X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (RXPS) is a vital tool for obtaining atomic contributions to valence states. We combine RXPS with NRXPS and density functional theory calculations to demonstrate the validity of using RXPS to identify atomic contributions for a range of solutes (both neutral and ionic) and solvents (both molecular solvents and ionic liquids). Furthermore, the one-electron picture of RXPS holds for all of the closed shell molecules/ions studied, although the situation for an open-shell metal complex is more complicated. The factors needed to obtain a strong RXPS signal are investigated in order to predict the types of systems RXPS will work best for; a balance of element electronegativity and bonding type is found to be important. Additionally, the dependence of RXPS spectra on both varying solvation environment and varying local-covalent bonding is probed. We find that RXPS is a promising fingerprint method for identifying species in solution, due to the spectral shape having a strong dependence on local-covalency but a weak dependence on the solvation environment.

Lead-free halides with perovskite-related structures, such as the vacancy-ordered perovskite Cs 3 Bi 2 Br 9 , are of interest for photovoltaic and optoelectronic applications. We find that addition of SnBr 2 to the solution-phase synthesis of Cs 3 Bi 2 Br 9 leads to substitution of up to 7% of the Bi(iii) ions by equal quantities of Sn(ii) and Sn(iv). The nature of the substitutional defects was studied by X-ray diffraction, 133 Cs and 119 Sn solid state NMR, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations. The resulting mixed-valence compounds show intense visible and near infrared absorption due to intervalence charge transfer, as well as electronic transitions to and from localised Sn-based states within the band gap. Sn(ii) and Sn(iv) defects preferentially occupy neighbouring B-cation sites, forming a double-substitution complex. Unusually for a Sn(ii) compound, the material shows minimal changes in optical and structural properties after 12 months storage in air. Our calculations suggest the stabilisation of Sn(ii) within the double substitution complex contributes to this unusual stability. These results expand upon research on inorganic mixed-valent halides to a new, layered structure, and offer insights into the tuning, doping mechanisms, and structure-property relationships of lead-free vacancy-ordered perovskite structures., Competing Interests: There are no conflicts of interest., (This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry.)

Ionic liquid (IL) valence electronic structure provides key descriptors for understanding and predicting IL properties. The ionisation energies of 60 ILs are measured and the most readily ionised valence state of each IL (the highest occupied molecular orbital, HOMO) is identified using a combination of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and synchrotron resonant XPS. A structurally diverse range of cations and anions were studied. The cation gave rise to the HOMO for nine of the 60 ILs presented here, meaning it is energetically more favourable to remove an electron from the cation than the anion. The influence of the cation on the anion electronic structure (and vice versa ) were established; the electrostatic effects are well understood and demonstrated to be consistently predictable. We used this knowledge to make predictions of both ionisation energy and HOMO identity for a further 516 ILs, providing a very valuable dataset for benchmarking electronic structure calculations and enabling the development of models linking experimental valence electronic structure descriptors to other IL properties, e.g. electrochemical stability. Furthermore, we provide design rules for the prediction of the electronic structure of ILs.

The electronic and optical properties of (In x Ga 1- x ) 2 O 3 alloys are highly tunable, giving rise to a myriad of applications including transparent conductors, transparent electronics, and solar-blind ultraviolet photodetectors. Here, we investigate these properties for a high quality pulsed laser deposited film which possesses a lateral cation composition gradient (0.01 ≤ x ≤ 0.82) and three crystallographic phases (monoclinic, hexagonal, and bixbyite). The optical gaps over this composition range are determined, and only a weak optical gap bowing is found ( b = 0.36 eV). The valence band edge evolution along with the change in the fundamental band gap over the composition gradient enables the surface space-charge properties to be probed. This is an important property when considering metal contact formation and heterojunctions for devices. A transition from surface electron accumulation to depletion occurs at x ∼ 0.35 as the film goes from the bixbyite In 2 O 3 phase to the monoclinic β-Ga 2 O 3 phase. The electronic structure of the different phases is investigated by using density functional theory calculations and compared to the valence band X-ray photoemission spectra. Finally, the properties of these alloys, such as the n-type dopability of In 2 O 3 and use of Ga 2 O 3 as a solar-blind UV detector, are understood with respect to other common-cation compound semiconductors in terms of simple chemical trends of the band edge positions and the hydrostatic volume deformation potential.

Topochemical reduction of the n = 1 Ruddlesden-Popper phases LaSrCo 0.5 Rh 0.5 O 4 and LaSrNi 0.5 Rh 0.5 O 4 with Zr yields LaSrCo 0.5 Rh 0.5 O 3.25 and LaSrNi 0.5 Rh 0.5 O 3.25 , respectively. Magnetization and XPS data reveal that while the rhodium centers in LaSrCo 0.5 Rh 0.5 O 3.25 and LaSrNi 0.5 Rh 0.5 O 3.25 have an average oxidation state of Rh 2+ , these are actually mixed valence Rh(I,III) compounds, with the disproportionation of Rh 2+ driven by the favorability of locating d 8 Rh 1+ and d 6 Rh 3+ cations within square-planar and square-based pyramidal coordination sites, respectively.

Synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction data indicate that La0.5Sr0.5Mn0.5Rh0.5O3 and La0.5Sr0.5Fe0.5Rh0.5O3 adopt distorted perovskite structures (space group Pnma) with A-site and B-site cation disorder. A combination of XPS and 57Fe Mössbauer data indicate the transition metal cations in the two phases adopt Mn3+/Rh4+ and Fe3+/Rh4+ oxidation state combinations respectively. Transport data indicate both phases are insulating, with ρ vs. T dependences consistent with 3D variable-range hopping. Magnetisation data reveal that La0.5Sr0.5Mn0.5Rh0.5O3 adopts a ferromagnetic state below Tc ∼ 60 K, which is rationalized on the basis of coupling via a dynamic Jahn-Teller distortion mechanism. In contrast, magnetic data reveal La0.5Sr0.5Fe0.5Rh0.5O3 undergoes a transition to a spin-glass state at T ∼ 45 K, attributed to frustration between nearest-neighbour Fe-Rh and next-nearest-neighbour Fe-Fe couplings.

Metal oxynitrides adopting the perovskite structure have been shown to be visible light-activated photocatalysts, and therefore, they have potential as self-cleaning materials where surface organic pollutants can be removed by photomineralization. In this work, we establish a route for the deposition of thin films for seven perovskite oxynitrides, CaTaO 2 N, SrTaO 2 N, BaTaO 2 N, LaTaON 2 , EuTaO 2 N, SrNbO 2 N, and LaNbON 2 , on quartz and alumina substrates using dip-coating of a polymer gel to form an amorphous oxide precursor film, followed by ammonolysis. The initially deposited oxide films were annealed at 800 °C, followed by ammonolysis at temperatures from 850 to 1000 °C. The perovskite oxynitride thin films were characterized using XRD and EDX, with band gaps determined using Tauc plots derived from UV-vis spectroscopic data. A cobalt oxide co-catalyst was deposited onto each film by drop casting, and the photocatalytic activity assessed under visible light using dichloroindophenol dye degradation in the presence of a sacrificial oxidant. The light source used was a solar simulator equipped with a 400 nm cut-off filter. The dye degradation test demonstrated photocatalytic activity in all samples except EuTaO 2 N and BaTaO 2 N. The three most active samples were SrNbO 2 N, CaTaO 2 N, and SrTaO 2 N. The cobalt oxide loading was optimized for these three films and found to be 0.3 μg cm -2 . Further, catalytic tests were conducted using stearic acid degradation, and this found the film of SrNbO 2 N with the cobalt oxide co-catalyst to be the most active for complete mineralization of this model pollutant.

Mixed anion compounds in the Fm3̅m vacancy ordered perovskite structure were synthesized and characterized experimentally and computationally with a focus on compounds where A = Cs + . Pure anion Cs 2 SnX 6 compounds were formed with X = Cl, Br, and I using a room temperature solution phase method. Mixed anion compounds were formed as solid solutions of Cs 2 SnCl 6 and Cs 2 SnBr 6 and a second series from Cs 2 SnBr 6 and Cs 2 SnI 6 . Single phase structures formed across the entirety of both composition series with no evidence of long-range anion ordering observed by diffraction. A distortion of the cubic A 2 BX 6 structure was identified in which the spacing of the BX 6 octahedra changes to accommodate the A site cation without reduction of overall symmetry. Optical band gap values varied with anion composition between 4.89 eV in Cs 2 SnCl 6 to 1.35 eV in Cs 2 SnI 6 but proved highly nonlinear with changes in composition. In mixed halide compounds, it was found that lower energy optical transitions appeared that were not present in the pure halide compounds, and this was attributed to lowering of the local symmetry within the tin halide octahedra. The electronic structure was characterized by photoemission spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy revealed vibrational modes in the mixed halide compounds that could be assigned to particular mixed halide octahedra. This analysis was used to determine the distribution of octahedra types in mixed anion compounds, which was found to be consistent with a near-random distribution of halide anions throughout the structure, although some deviations from random halide distribution were noted in mixed iodide-bromide compounds, where the larger iodide anions preferentially adopted trans configurations., Competing Interests: The authors declare no competing financial interest., (Copyright © 2019 American Chemical Society.)

The atomic contributions to valence electronic structure for 37 ionic liquids (ILs) are identified using a combination of variable photon energy XPS, resonant Auger electron spectroscopy (RAES) and a subtraction method. The ILs studied include a diverse range of cationic and anionic structural moieties. We introduce a new parameter for ILs, the energy difference between the energies of the cationic and anionic highest occupied fragment orbitals (HOFOs), which we use to identify the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO). The anion gave rise to the HOMO for 25 of the 37 ILs studied here. For 10 of the ILs, the energies of the cationic and anionic HOFOs were the same (within experimental error); therefore, it could not be determined whether the HOMO was from the cation or the anion. For two of the ILs, the HOMO was from the cation and not from the anion; consequently it is energetically more favourable to remove an electron from the cation than the anion for these two ILs. In addition, we used a combination of area normalisation and subtraction of XP spectra to produce what are effectively XP spectra for individual ions; this was achieved for 10 cations and 14 anions.

Biologically derived metal-organic frameworks (bio-MOFs) are of great importance as they can be used as models for bio-mimicking and in catalysis, allowing us to gain insights into how large biological molecules function. Through rational design, here we report the synthesis of a novel bio-MOF featuring unobstructed Watson-Crick faces of adenine (Ade) pointing towards the MOF cavities. We show, through a combined experimental and computational approach, that thymine (Thy) molecules diffuse through the pores of the MOF and become base-paired with Ade. The Ade-Thy pair binding at 40-45% loading reveals that Thy molecules are packed within the channels in a way that fulfill both the Woodward-Hoffmann and Schmidt rules, and upon UV irradiation, Thy molecules dimerize into Thy<>Thy. This study highlights the utility of accessible functional groups within the pores of MOFs, and their ability to 'lock' molecules in specific positions that can be subsequently dimerized upon light irradiation, extending the use of MOFs as nanoreactors for the synthesis of molecules that are otherwise challenging to isolate.

Olivine-structured LiCoPO 4 is prepared via a facile solvothermal synthesis, using various ratios of water/diethylene glycol co-solvent, followed by thermal treatment under Ar, air, 5%H 2 /N 2 or NH 3 . The diethylene glycol plays an important role in tailoring the particle size of LiCoPO 4 . It is found that using a ratio of water/diethylene glycol of 1 : 6 (v/v), LiCoPO 4 is obtained with a homogenous particle size of ∼150 nm. The bare LiCoPO 4 prepared after heating in Ar exhibits high initial discharge capacity of 147 mA h g -1 at 0.1C with capacity retention of 70% after 40 cycles. This is attributed to the enhanced electronic conductivity of LiCoPO 4 due to the presence of Co 2 P after firing under Ar. The effects of carbon, TiN and RuO 2 coating are also examined. A combination of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and near edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy has been used to provide an experimental measure of nitrogen atomic charges in nine ionic liquids (ILs). These experimental results are used to validate charges calculated with three computational methods: charges from electrostatic potentials using a grid-based method (ChelpG), natural bond orbital population analysis, and the atoms in molecules approach. By combining these results with those from a previous study on sulfur, we find that ChelpG charges provide the best description of the charge distribution in ILs. However, we find that ChelpG charges can lead to significant conformational dependence and therefore advise that small differences in ChelpG charges (<0.3 e ) should be interpreted with care. We use these validated charges to provide physical insight into nitrogen atomic charges for the ILs probed.

We report the syntheses and structures of five metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) based on transition metals (Ni II , Cu II , and Zn II ), adenine, and di-, tri-, and tetra-carboxylate ligands. Adenine, with multiple N donor sites, was found to coordinate to the metal centers in different binding modes including bidentate (through N7 and N9, or N3 and N9) and tridentate (through N3, N7, and N9). Systematic investigations of the protonation states of adenine in each MOF structure via X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy revealed that adenine can be selectively protonated through N1, N3, or N7. The positions of H atoms connected to the N atoms were found from the electron density maps, and further supported by the study of C-N-C bond angles compared to the literature reports. DFT calculations were performed to geometrically optimize and energetically assess the structures simulated with different protonation modes. The present study highlights the rich coordination chemistry of adenine and provides a method for the determination of its protonation states and the location of protonated N atoms of adenine within MOFs, a task that would be challenging in complicated adenine-based MOF structures.

Experimental near edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectra, X-ray photoelectron (XP) spectra and Auger electron spectra are reported for sulfur in ionic liquids (ILs) with a range of chemical structures. These values provide experimental measures of the atomic charge in each IL and enable the evaluation of the suitability of NEXAFS spectroscopy and XPS for probing the relative atomic charge of sulfur. In addition, we use Auger electron spectroscopy to show that when XPS binding energies differ by less than 0.5 eV, conclusions on atomic charge should be treated with caution. Our experimental data provides a benchmark for calculations of the atomic charge of sulfur obtained using different methods. Atomic charges were computed for lone ions and ion pairs, both in the gas phase (GP) and in a solvation model (SMD), with a wide range of ion pair conformers considered. Three methods were used to compute the atomic charges: charges from the electrostatic potential using a grid based method (ChelpG), natural bond orbital (NBO) population analysis and Bader's atoms in molecules (AIM) approach. By comparing the experimental and calculated measures of the atomic charge of sulfur, we provide an order for the sulfur atoms, ranging from the most negative to the most positive atomic charge. Furthermore, we show that both ChelpG and NBO are reasonable methods for calculating the atomic charge of sulfur in ILs, based on the agreement with both the XPS and NEXAFS spectroscopy results. However, the atomic charges of sulfur derived from ChelpG are found to display significant, non-physical conformational dependence. Only small differences in individual atomic charge of sulfur were observed between lone ion (GP) and ion pair IL(SMD) model systems, indicating that ion-ion interactions do not strongly influence individual atomic charges.

Experimental near edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectra are reported for 12 ionic liquids (ILs) encompassing a range of chemical structures for both the sulfur 1s and nitrogen 1s edges and compared with time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations. The energy scales for the experimental data were carefully calibrated against literature data. Gas phase calculations were performed on lone ions, ion pairs and ion pair dimers, with a wide range of ion pair conformers considered. For the first time, it is demonstrated that TD-DFT is a suitable method for simulating NEXAFS spectra of ILs, although the number of ions included in the calculations and their conformations are important considerations. For most of the ILs studied, calculations on lone ions in the gas phase were sufficient to successfully reproduce the experimental NEXAFS spectra. However, for certain ILs - for example, those containing a protic ammonium cation - calculations on ion pairs were required to obtain a good agreement with experimental spectra. Furthermore, significant conformational dependence was observed for the protic ammonium ILs, providing insight into the predominant liquid phase cation-anion interactions. Among the 12 investigated ILs, we find that four have an excited state that is delocalised across both the cation and the anion, which has implications for any process that depends on the excited state, for example, radiolysis. Considering the collective experimental and theoretical data, we recommend that ion pairs should be the minimum number of ions used for the calculation of NEXAFS spectra of ILs.

Graphitic carbon nitrides (GCNs) represent a family of 2D materials composed of carbon and nitrogen with variable amounts of hydrogen, used in a wide variety of applications. We report a method of room temperature thin film deposition which allows ordered GCN layers to be deposited on a very wide variety of substrates, including conductive glass, flexible plastics, nanoparticles and nano-structured surfaces, where they form a highly conformal coating on the nanoscale. Film thicknesses of below 20 nm are achievable. In this way we construct functional nanoscale heterojunctions between TiO 2 nanoparticles and GCN, capable of producing H 2 photocatalytically under visible light irradiation. The films are hydrogen rich, have a band gap around 1.7 eV, display transmission electron microscopy lattice fringes as well as X-ray diffraction peaks despite being deposited at room temperature, and show characteristic Raman and IR bands. We use cluster etching to reveal the chemical environments of C and N in GCN using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. We elucidate the mechanism of this deposition, which operates via sequential surface adsorption and reaction analogous to atomic layer deposition. The mechanism may have implications for current models of carbon nitride formation.

The porosity of platinum nanoparticle aggregates (PtNPs) is investigated electrochemically via particle-electrode impacts and by XPS. The mean charge per oxidative transient is measured from nanoimpacts; XPS shows the formation of PtO and PtO 2 in relative amounts defined by the electrode potential and an average oxidation state is deduced as a function of potential. The number of platinum atoms oxidised per PtNP is calculated and compared with two models: solid and porous spheres, within which there are two cases: full and surface oxidation. This allows insight into extent to which the internal surface of the aggregate is 'seen' by the solution and is electrochemically active.

Monoclinic vanadium(IV) oxide (VO 2 ) has been widely studied for energy-efficient glazing applications because of its thermochromic properties, displaying a large change in transmission of near-IR wavelengths between the hot and cold states. The optimization of the reaction between VCl 4 and ethyl acetate via atmospheric-pressure chemical vapor deposition (APCVD) was shown to produce thin films of monoclinic VO 2 with excellent thermochromic properties (Δ T sol = 12%). The tailoring of the thermochromic and visible light transmission was shown to be possible by altering the density and morphology of the deposited films. The films were characterized by X-ray diffraction, atomic-force microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, ellipsometry, and UV-vis spectrometry. In this paper we report on the use of aerosol assisted chemical vapour deposition (AACVD) to form thin films of the zinc titanate phases using zinc acetate and titanium isopropoxide as precursors in methanol solution. Analysis by XRD and XPS found that through variation in experimental conditions we have been able to synthesize films of zinc titanate with composition of Zn 2 TiO 4 or Zn 0.3 Ti 2.7 O 4.94 , which adopt the spinel and pseudobrookite structure respectively. In addition, we have also formed hybrid films of Zn 2 TiO 4 with either ZnTiO 3 or ZnO. Using a technique previously reported with powders, the mixed ZnO and Zn 2 TiO 4 films were treated with acid to produce porous Zn 2 TiO 4 which, through reduction and vapour leaching of zinc, were converted to hierarchically porous thin films of anatase TiO 2 . This conversion was monitored by XRD. Analysis of photocatalytic activity of the hierarchically porous titania, using dye and stearic acid degradation tests, found a factor of 12 to 14 increase in rates of photocatalysis over conventional TiO 2 thin films. Finally we are able to report a maximum formal quantum efficiency for stearic acid degradation of 1.76 × 10 -3 molecules per photon.

Highly oriented TiO2 thin films were deposited onto Al2O3(0001), SrTiO3(001), and LaAlO3(001) substrates by spin coating a titanium alkoxide precursor solution followed by annealing. The films were nitrogen doped by two different routes: either by adding tetramethyethylenediamine (TMEDA) to the precursor solution or alternatively by high temperature ammonolysis. Undoped TiO2 films were highly oriented and the phase was dependent on the substrate. N doping by ammonolysis led to transformation of rutile films to anatase, confirmed by XRD and by XPS valence band spectroscopy. Significant differences were observed in the spatial distribution of the nitrogen dopant depending upon which synthesis method was used. These two factors may shed light on the increased photocatalytic efficiencies reported in N doped TiO2.

As the worldwide demand for energy increases, low-cost solar cells are being looked to as a solution for the future. To attain this, non-toxic earth-abundant materials are crucial, however cell efficiencies for current materials are limited in many cases. In this article, we examine the two silver copper sulfides AgCuS and Ag 3 CuS 2 as possible solar absorbers using hybrid density functional theory, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, XPS and Hall effect measurements. We show that both compounds demonstrate promising electronic structures and band gaps for high theoretical efficiency solar cells, based on Shockley-Queisser limits. Detailed analysis of their optical properties, however, indicates that only AgCuS should be of interest for PV applications, with a high theoretical efficiency. From this, we also calculate the band alignment of AgCuS against various buffer layers to aid in future device construction.

Two-dimensional covalent-organic frameworks (2D-COFs) on surfaces offer a facile route to new 2D materials. Schiff-base condensation reactions have proven to be an effective fabrication route for such materials. We present scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) studies of porphyrin 2D-COFs grown at a solid-vapour interface. XPS shows that covalent links between porphyrins consist of a mixture of imines and hemiaminals, a non-conjugated intermediate in the Schiff-base condensation reaction. These results demonstrate that environmental conditions during growth can have an important impact on the chemical composition of Schiff-base 2D-COFs.

We demonstrate an efficient method to produce mechano-responsive polymeric scaffolds which can alter cellular functions using two different functionalized (OH and NH2) silica nano-fillers. Fumed silica-hydroxyl and fumed silica-amine nano-fillers were mixed with a biocompatible polymer (POSS-PCU) at various wt% to produce scaffolds. XPS and mechanical testing demonstrate that bulk mechanical properties are modified without changing the scaffold's surface chemistry. Mechanical testing showed significant change in bulk properties of POSS-PCU scaffolds with an addition of silica nanofillers as low as 1% (P<0.01). Scaffolds modified with NH2 silica showed significantly higher bulk mechanical properties compared to the one modified with the OH group. Enhanced cell adhesion, proliferation and collagen production over 14days were observed on scaffolds with higher bulk mechanical properties (NH2) compared to those with lower ones (unmodified and OH modified) (P<0.05) during in vitro analysis. This study provides an effective method of manufacturing mechano-responsive polymeric scaffolds, which can help to customize cellular responses for biomaterial applications., (Copyright © 2016 The Authors. This study present amino functionalization of biocompatible polymer polyhedral oligomeric silsequioxane-poly(carbonate-urea) urethane (POSS-PCU) using plasma polymerization process to induce osteogenic differentiation of adipose derived stem cells (ADSCs). Optimization of plasma polymerization process was carried out keeping cell culture application in mind. Thus, samples were rigorously tested for retention of amino groups under both dry and wet conditions. Physio-chemical characterization was carried out using ninhydrin test, X-ray photon spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and static water contact analysis. Results from physio chemical characterization shows that functionalization of the amino group is not stable under wet conditions and optimization of plasma process is required for stable bonding of amino groups to the POSS-PCU polymer. Optimized samples were later tested in vitro in short and long-term culture to study differentiation of ADSCs on amino modified samples. Short-term cell culture shows that initial cell attachment was significantly (p < 0.001) improved on amine modified samples (NH2-POSS-PCU) compared to unmodified POSS-PCU. NH2-POSS-PCU samples also facilitates osteogenic differentiation of ADSCs as confirmed by immunological staining of cells for extracellular markers such as collagen Type I and osteopontin. Quantification of total collagen and ALP activity also shows significant (p < 0.001) increase on NH2-POSS-PCU samples compared to unmodified POSS-PCU. A pilot study also confirms that these optimized amino modified POSS-PCU samples can further be functionalized using bone inducing peptide such as KRSR using conventional wet chemistry. This further provides an opportunity for biofunctionalization of the polymer for various tissue specific applications.

The tolerance factor is a widely used predictor of perovskite stability. The recent interest in hybrid perovskites for use as solar cell absorbers has lead to application of the tolerance factor to these materials as a way to explain and predict structure. Here we critically assess the suitability of the tolerance factor for halide perovskites. We show that the tolerance factor fails to accurately predict the stability of the 32 known inorganic iodide perovskites, and propose an alternative method. We introduce a revised set of ionic radii for cations that is anion dependent, this revision is necessary due to increased covalency in metal-halide bonds for heavier halides compared with the metal-oxide and fluoride bonds used to calculate Shannon radii. We also employ a 2D structural map to account for the size requirements of the halide anions. Together these measures yield a simple system which may assist in the search for new hybrid and inorganic perovskites.

Novel lead and bismuth dipyrido complexes have been synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, which shows their structures to be directed by highly oriented π-stacking of planar fully conjugated organic ligands. Optical band gaps are influenced by the identity of both the organic and inorganic component. Density functional theory calculations show optical excitation leads to exciton separation between inorganic and organic components. Using UV-vis, photoluminescence, and X-ray photoemission spectroscopies, we have determined the materials' frontier energy levels and show their suitability for photovoltaic device fabrication by use of electron- and hole-transport materials such as TiO2 and spiro-OMeTAD respectively. Such organic/inorganic hybrid materials promise greater electronic tunability than the inflexible methylammonium lead iodide structure through variation of both the metal and organic components.

The increasing efficiency of the inorganic-organic hybrid halides has revolutionised photovoltaic research. Despite this rapid progress, the significant issues of poor stability and toxicity have yet to be suitably overcome. In this article, we use Density Functional Theory to examine (Pb2I6) · (H2DPNDI) · (H2O) · (NMP), an alternative lead-based hybrid inorganic-organic solar absorber based on a photoactive organic cation. Our results demonstrate that optical properties suitable for photovoltaic applications, in addition to spatial electron-hole separation, are possible but efficient charge transport may be a limiting factor.

Current surgical reconstruction of facial defects including nose or ear involves harvesting patient's own autologous tissue, causing donor site morbidity and is limited by tissue availability. The use of alternative synthetic materials is also limited due to complications related to poor tissue integration and angiogenesis, which lead to extrusion of implants and infection. We intend to meet this clinical challenge by using a novel nanocomposite called polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane poly(carbonate-urea)urethane (POSS-PCU), which has already been successfully taken to the clinical bench-side as a replacement for trachea, tear duct and vascular by-pass graft. In this study, we aimed to enhance tissue integration and angiogenesis of POSS-PCU using an established surface treatment technique, plasma surface polymerisation (PSP), functionalising the surface using NH2 and COOH chemical groups. Physical characterisation of scaffolds was achieved by using a number of techniques, including water contact angle, SEM, AFM and XPS to study the effects of PSM modification on the POSS-PCU nanocomposite in detail, which has not been previously documented. Wettability evaluation confirmed that scaffolds become hydrophilic and AFM analysis confirmed that nano topographical alterations resulted as a consequence of PSP treatment. Chemical functionalisation was confirmed using XPS, which suggested the presence of NH2 and COOH functional groups on the scaffolds. The modified scaffolds were then tested both in vitro and in vivo to investigate the potential of PSP modified POSS-PCU scaffolds on tissue integration and angiogenesis. In vitro analysis confirmed that PSM modification resulted in higher cellular growth, proliferation and ECM production as assessed by biochemical assays and immunofluorescence. Subcutaneous implantation of modified POSS-PCU scaffolds was then carried out over 12-weeks, resulting in enhanced tissue integration and angiogenesis (p < 0.05). This study demonstrates a simple and cost effective surface modification method to overcome the current challenge of implant extrusion and infection caused by poor integration and angiogenesis.

Native tissues are typically heterogeneous and hierarchically organized, and generating scaffolds that can mimic these properties is critical for tissue engineering applications. By uniquely combining controlled radical polymerization (CRP), end-functionalization of polymers, and advanced electrospinning techniques, a modular and versatile approach is introduced to generate scaffolds with spatially organized functionality. Poly-ε-caprolactone is end functionalized with either a polymerization-initiating group or a cell-binding peptide motif cyclic Arg-Gly-Asp-Ser (cRGDS), and are each sequentially electrospun to produce zonally discrete bilayers within a continuous fiber scaffold. The polymerization-initiating group is then used to graft an antifouling polymer bottlebrush based on poly(ethylene glycol) from the fiber surface using CRP exclusively within one bilayer of the scaffold. The ability to include additional multifunctionality during CRP is showcased by integrating a biotinylated monomer unit into the polymerization step allowing postmodification of the scaffold with streptavidin-coupled moieties. These combined processing techniques result in an effective bilayered and dual-functionality scaffold with a cell-adhesive surface and an opposing antifouling non-cell-adhesive surface in zonally specific regions across the thickness of the scaffold, demonstrated through fluorescent labelling and cell adhesion studies. This modular and versatile approach combines strategies to produce scaffolds with tailorable properties for many applications in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.

Despite extensive work on the controlled surface modification of carbon with redox moieties, to date almost all available methodologies involve complex chemistry and are prone to the formation of polymerized multi-layer surface structures. Herein, the facile bifunctional redox tagging of carbon nanoparticles (diameter 27 nm) and its characterization is undertaken using the industrial dye Reactive Blue 2. The modification route is demonstrated to be via exceptionally strong physisorption. The modified carbon is found to exhibit both well-defined oxidative and reductive voltammetric redox features which are quantitatively interpreted. The method provides a generic approach to monolayer modifications of carbon and carbon nanoparticle surfaces.

A range of ionic liquids containing dialkylimidazolium cations and halobismuthate anions ([BiBr(x)Cl(y)I(z)](-) and [Bi2Br(x)Cl(y)I(z)](-)) were synthesised by combining dialkylimidazolium halide ionic liquids with bismuth(III) halide salts. The majority were room temperature liquids, all with very high densities. The neat ionic liquids and their mixtures with 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide were characterised using Densitometry, Viscometry, NMR Spectroscopy, Electrospray Ionisation Mass Spectrometry (ESI), Liquid Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (LSIMS), Matrix-assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Mass Spectrometry (MALDI), X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), to establish their speciation and suitability for high-temperature applications.

Graphitic carbon nitride has been predicted to be structurally analogous to carbon-only graphite, yet with an inherent bandgap. We have grown, for the first time, macroscopically large crystalline thin films of triazine-based, graphitic carbon nitride (TGCN) using an ionothermal, interfacial reaction starting with the abundant monomer dicyandiamide. The films consist of stacked, two-dimensional (2D) crystals between a few and several hundreds of atomic layers in thickness. Scanning force and transmission electron microscopy show long-range, in-plane order, while optical spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and density functional theory calculations corroborate a direct bandgap between 1.6 and 2.0 eV. Citrate-capped gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) of 5 nm in diameter are synthesized via wet chemistry and deposited on a glassy carbon electrode through electrophoresis. The kinetics of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) on the modified electrode is determined quantitatively in oxygen-saturated 0.5 M sulphuric acid solution by modelling the cathode as an array of interactive nanoelectrodes. Quantitative analysis of the cyclic voltammetry shows that no apparent ORR electrocatalysis takes place, the kinetics on AuNPs being effectively the same as on bulk gold. Contrasting with the above, a strong ORR catalysis is found when Pb(2+) is added to the oxygen saturated solution or when the modified electrode is cycled in lead alkaline solution such that lead dioxide is repeatedly electrodeposited and stripped off on the nanoparticles. In both cases, the underpotential deposition of lead on the gold nanoparticles is found to be related to the catalysis.

The most widely used oxide for photocatalytic applications owing to its low cost and high activity is TiO₂. The discovery of the photolysis of water on the surface of TiO₂ in 1972 launched four decades of intensive research into the underlying chemical and physical processes involved. Despite much collected evidence, a thoroughly convincing explanation of why mixed-phase samples of anatase and rutile outperform the individual polymorphs has remained elusive. One long-standing controversy is the energetic alignment of the band edges of the rutile and anatase polymorphs of TiO₂ (ref. ). We demonstrate, through a combination of state-of-the-art materials simulation techniques and X-ray photoemission experiments, that a type-II, staggered, band alignment of ~ 0.4 eV exists between anatase and rutile with anatase possessing the higher electron affinity, or work function. Our results help to explain the robust separation of photoexcited charge carriers between the two phases and highlight a route to improved photocatalysts.
