Purpose: To evaluate the protective role of Laurus Nobilis eye drops on selenite-induced cataracts in suckling rabbits. Methods: Fifteen male albino suckling rabbits with no signs of ocular inflammation were randomly assigned to three groups: controls (Group A), sodium-selenite group (Group B) and sodium-selenite plus Laurus Nobilis group (Group C). By selenite treatment, cataract formation was experimentally induced and then graded. The grade of oxidative stress was defined in the lens, measuring the concentration of malondialdehyde, alpha-tocopherol, oxidized glutathione, ascorbic acid and hydrogen peroxide, and in blood samples as levels of alpha-tocopherol and malondialdehyde. Results: Mean lens concentrations of GSSG, H2O2, and MDA levels in group B were significantly higher than in both group C and control. Ascorbic acid and alpha-tocopherol concentrations were lower in group B than in both group C and A. As plasma oxidative status markers, the level of MDA was higher in group B respected group C and A. The mean alpha-tocopherol levels in group B were significantly lower than in both group A and group C. Conclusions: In animals treated with Laurus Nobilis-based eye drops, inflammation was inhibited, and lipid peroxidation was significantly reduced. Laurus nobilis leaves extract represents a good source of antioxidant components that may contrast sodium selenite-induced cataractogenesis in suckling rabbits. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this study was to investigate the genomic diversity of the Nero d'Aspromonte (NA) pig population. NA is a subpopulation derived from the Apulo Calabrese (AC) breed that has been reared in total isolation within the Polsi area of Aspromonte, Calabria, Italy. NA is traditionally recognised and used by local farmers for the production of typical products. The growing interest in this subpopulation has led local farmers to create a cooperative to promote NA pig meat and help preserve the cultural heritage associated with this local population. A total of 40 NA pigs were included in our study and genotyped with the Illumina GGP Porcine array. Admixture, TreeMix, and run of homozygosity (ROH) analyses were performed to investigate genetic diversity within the NA subpopulation and its relationship with the AC breed and other Italian pig breeds. The NA population clearly originated from the AC breed. The lower inbreeding and average ROH size in NA compared to AC may indicate that NA differentiated from the original AC genetic pool with the contribution of admixture from other genetic backgrounds in addition to the effects of genetic isolation and genetic drift. The analysis of the genetic diversity of the NA subpopulation showcases the utility of genomic analyses to reconstruct the genetic history of local populations. A specific conservation program for this genetic resource may further support the sustainable development of local pig production systems based on traditional farming practices as a part of agricultural cultural heritage. HIGHLIGHTS: We genetically characterised the Nero d'Aspromonte pig population using genomic data. Genomic characteristics of this population were compared with nine other Italian pig breeds. The results confirmed that Nero d'Aspromonte population originated from the Apulo Calabrese breed. An admixed genetic structure can be detected between Nero d'Aspromonte and Apulo Calabrese pigs. Simple Summary: A ready supply of eggs has been provided for consumers throughout the years at a relatively low price sufficient to meet consumer demand. In response to the cage-free trend, adequate studies regarding the difference between the cage system and alternative systems are necessary due to the growing concerns about food safety and animal welfare, especially animal living conditions. Along with welfare concerns, there is rising consumer consciousness about the environmental sustainability of animal production. From this perspective, increasing persistency in lay and stability in egg quality would generate environmental and economic benefits. The present study investigated the effects of the enriched cage and free-range systems on the egg yolk nutrient composition at the late phase of the laying cycle (from the 68th week to the 74th week of age). The results of the present study indicated that the egg yolk lipid profile in terms of the total lipid, cholesterol, and fatty acid composition was not modified by the increasing age of laying hens. On the other hand, the results confirmed that the free-range system may improve the nutritional yolk fatty acid profile and its positive impact on human health, which can be a convincing support for the trend of "cage-free" eggs. In recent years, the free-range system for laying hens has increased, driven by societal sensitivity to animal welfare. This study aimed to comparatively analyze the total lipid, cholesterol, and fatty acid composition of egg yolks of late-age laying hens reared in enriched cages (C) and the free-range system (FR). Eggs were collected from Lohmann Brown Classic hens at the 68th, 70th, 72nd, and 74th week of age. The concentrations of total lipids and cholesterol were not affected (p > 0.05) by either factor. Egg yolk from the FR group showed lower (p < 0.01) monounsaturated fatty acids and higher (p < 0.01) polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) compared with that of the C group. From a nutritional point of view, the PUFA n-6/n-3 and the PUFA/SFA ratios of egg yolk from the FR group were favorably lower and higher (p < 0.01) compared with the C one. Conversely, hen age did not affect (p > 0.05) the fatty acid composition of yolks. Interactions between factors were found for total n-3 and n-6 PUFA and the n-6/n-3 ratio (p < 0.01), as well as the thrombogenic index (p < 0.05). The effect of Lippia citriodora extract on selected blood parameters and on plasma oxidative markers in Avelignese horses was evaluated. Twenty‐four horses were divided into three groups, consisting of eight animals each. Results of two experimental groups, 0.5 mg of verbascoside per kg of metabolic body weight (bw0.75) in the low‐dose group (LVB) and 1.0 mg of verbascoside per kg of metabolic body weight (bw0.75) in the high‐dose group (HVB), were compared to the control group (CON). Groups fed L. citriodora extract (HVB and LVB) showed a significant decrease in triglycerides, total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol (p < .01), bilirubin, and transaminases (p < .05), and an increase in HDL cholesterol (p < .01) compared to the CON group. Oxidative status was improved due to significant decrease in plasma concentration of ROMs and TBARS (p < .01) and increase in levels of vitamin A and vitamin E (p < .01). Based on obtained results, it is assumed that dietary supplementation with L. citriodora extract might find a useful application in horse feeding, with positive impact observed in blood parameters and plasma oxidative markers, with beneficial effects on the physiological welfare of livestock animals. Effects of dietary supplementation of verbascoside and lycopene, alone and in combination, on some blood parameters, plasma oxidative status and meat quality traits in intensively reared rabbits were investigated. The test lasted 60 days and was conducted on 200 weaned‐rabbits, divided into four groups of 50 animals each (5 animals each cage × 10 repetitions). The control group (CON) received a fattening feed without any feed supplements, whereas the experimental groups received the following: the first, an integration in 22 g of PLX®23 (Lippia citriodora extract; VB group) per ton of feed; the second, an integration in 100 g of LycoBeads® (Solanum lycopersicum extract; LIC group) per ton of feed; and the third, an integration of both feed supplements in combination at the same doses (LIC+VB group). The dietary supplementation with Lippia citriodora and Solanum lycopersicum resulted in an improvement of the blood lipid profile, oxidative plasma markers, and hepatic and renal activity of treated growing rabbits. Feed additives also produced meat with a lower content in SFA and an increased PUFA content, and inhibited the lipid oxidation improving the oxidative stability of rabbit meat. The dietary supplementation, even reporting no effects on productive parameters and carcass yield, showed an improvement on several blood parameters, as indicator of animal welfare, and on quality and healthy meat markers. Cereals are basic food for human consumption and for animal feeding containing a wide variety of components with nutraceutical properties. Several dietary nutraceutical supplements were used in rabbit diet to improve the meat quality. The effect of the Lisosan G® enrich-feed on the productive performance and meat quality in growing rabbits was evaluated. The trial lasted 63 days and was conducted in an experimental rabbitry on 40-weaned and clinically healthy male rabbits. Animals were fed a commercial diet and randomly assigned to four treatments: control diet (CON group) and diet supplemented with 10 g/kg (LIS1 group) or 20 g/kg (LIS2 group) or 30 g/kg (LIS3 group). Performance parameters, such as body weight, average daily gain, feed intake, feed conversion indices and results relating to slaughter reliefs were not statistically affected by the experimental treatments. The Lisosan G® supplementation, at the rate of 20 g/kg feed, produced in rabbits a significant improvement of qualitative characteristics of the meat, characterized by higher oxidative stability, with a lower level of TBARS providing also a positive effect on meat shelf-life. Dietary treatments including fermented wheat powder improved meat the fatty acid profile, highlighted by a significant reduction of saturated fatty acid (SFA) and a marked increase of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), leading to an improvement of the nutritional value of the meat and with positive effects on consumer's health. Polyphenol-rich foods could have a pivotal function in the prevention of oxidative stress-based pathologies and antibacterial action. The purpose of this study was to investigate the in vitro antimicrobial activity, as well as the in vitro and In Vivo antioxidant capacities of wild Prunus spinosa L. fruit (PSF) from the southeast regions of Italy. The total phenolic content (TPC) was quantified, and the single polyphenols were analyzed by HPLC-DAD, showing high rutin and 4-hydroxybenzoic acid levels, followed by gallic and trans-sinapic acids. PSF extract demonstrated antimicrobial activity against some potentially pathogenic Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. Besides, we investigated the cellular antioxidant activity (CAA) and the hemolysis inhibition of PSF extract on human erythrocytes, evidencing both a good antioxidant power and a marked hemolysis inhibition. Furthermore, an In Vivo experiment with oxidative stress-induced rats treated with a high-fat diet (HFD) and a low dose of streptozotocin (STZ) demonstrated that PSF has a dose-dependent antioxidant capacity both in liver and in brain. In conclusion, the wild Italian Prunus spinosa L. fruit could be considered a potentially useful material for both nutraceutical and food industries because of its antioxidant and antimicrobial effects. Selected serum biochemical parameters and plasma oxidative status were evaluated in Lacaune ewes on a diet supplemented with extruded linseed, verbascoside and vitamin E. A 98 day-trial was conducted on 44 ewes and started 40 ± 2 days post partum. The animals were divided into four homogeneous groups of eleven animals each; one control group (CON) with a basal diet, and the other three experimental groups supplemented with extruded linseed (L group), extruded linseedverbascoside (LVB group) and extruded linseed-verbascoside-vitamin E (LVBE group). All animals individually received an isoproteic and isoenergetic diet, consisting of 700g of concentrated feed and meadow hay ad libitum. Blood sampling of the ewes was performed three times: at the beginning (0 d), midway (49 d) and end of the trial (98 d). The following parameters were determined: triglycerides, total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, bilirubin, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), reactive oxygen metabolites (ROMs), vitamin A and vitamin E. Dietary integration in the LVB and LVBE groups resulted in an improvement in the blood profile, characterized by a significant (P=0.001) increase in HDL cholesterol and a marked decrease in triglycerides (P=0.001), total cholesterol (P=0.017), LDL cholesterol (P=0.001) and bilirubin (P=0.035), due to the verbascoside supplementation. In the same groups, there was an increase in blood vitamin A (P=0.002) and vitamin E (P=0.001), and a reduction (P=0.001) in ROMs and TBARS, with an improved plasma oxidative status. The dietary vitamin E integration did not produce a significant improvement in the parameters studied, with no statistical differences between LVB and LVBE groups. Animal feed containing extruded flaxseed, might therefore benefit from the addition of a verbascoside supplement, because of the positive effect showed by this molecule on the blood parameters.
