The aim of the study was to validate a novel digital measurement method to quantify the volume of the midpalatal suture after rapid maxillary expansion (RME). Material and methods: Eight patients with maxillary skeletal transverse deficiency were submitted to palatine suture expansion using the McNamara orthodontic appliance during a period of nine months. After 30 days of treatment, all patients were exposed postoperatively to a cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scan. Afterwards, the scans were uploaded into the three-dimensional orthodontic-planning software to allow the volumetric assessment of the palatine suture expansion through palatine rapid maxillary expansion using a McNamara appliance. The repeatability was analyzed by repeating twice the measures by a single operator and reproducibility was analyzed by repeating three times the measures by two operators, and Gage R&R statistical analysis was performed. Results: The expansion of the midpalatal suture by means of the rapid maxillary expansion technique, in terms of digital volume measurement, showed a repeatability value of 0.09% and between the two operators a reproducibility value of 0.00% was shown. Conclusions: The novel measurement technique demonstrated a high repeatability and reproducibility rate for volume assessment of the palatine suture expansion through palatine rapid maxillary expansion technique. El objetivo del estudio fue validar un nuevo método de medición digital para cuantificar el volumen de la sutura palatina media después de la expansión maxilar rápida (RME). Material y métodos: Ocho pacientes con deficiencia transversa esquelética maxilar fueron sometidos a expansión de sutura palatina utilizando el aparato de ortodoncia McNamara durante un período de nueve meses. Después de 30 días de tratamiento, todos los pacientes fueron expuestos después de la operación a una tomografía computarizada de haz cónico (CBCT). Posteriormente, los escaneos se cargaron en el software de planificación de ortodoncia tridimensional para permitir la evaluación volumétrica de la expansión de la sutura palatina a través de la expansión maxilar palatina rápida utilizando un aparato McNamara. La repetibilidad se analizó repitiendo dos veces las medidas por un solo operador y la reproducibilidad se analizó repitiendo tres veces las medidas por dos operadores, y se realizó el análisis estadístico Gage R&R. Objective The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of different mechanical forces on the expansion of the palatine suture using transsutural distraction osteogenesis. Methods A total of 48 dogs were used in this study. The experimental groups were treated with a custom-designed internal distractor. Bone regeneration was determined with x-rays and histology. The computed values underwent statistical analyses using analysis of variance. Results The maxillary complex was most noticeably advanced with an applied mechanical force of 600 g (20.15 ± 1.36 mm), compared with forces of 400 g (19.88 ± 1.41 mm) and 800 g (2.24 ± 0.93 mm). Immunohistochemical staining showed that the expression of bone morphogenetic protein-2 and bone morphogenetic protein-4 fluctuated with different mechanical forces. These changes were statistically significant when 600 g of force was applied within 30 days of distraction ( P < .05). Conclusions Transsutural distraction osteogenesis in the growing dog should be safe and well tolerated in inducing bony lengthening of the maxilla, and the optimal force is 600 × g. Bone morphogenetic protein-2 and bone morphogenetic protein-4 may play an important roles in the signaling pathways that link mechanical forces and biological responses.

[Abstract] A method for estimating age based on occlusal wear of the teeth and palatine suture morphology has been widely used. This allows us to estimating age based on macroscopic findings. However, even if the living status and jaw growth are taken into consideration, the accuracy of this method is not sufficient. In this case, a marked difference was observed in estimated age between two methods based on the degree of occlusal wear and palatine sutures. To avoid this discrepancy, a number of approaches, including radiography, a comparison of the morphology of teeth using a study model, and data preparation employing dental charts are necessary. Some factors, such as distortion, growth and developmental disorders of the jawbone, diet, occlusal relationship, and habits often influence age estimation especially when the dental attrition degree of the tooth is used. When there is a discrepancy in the estimated age, caution should be exercised. There is an individual difference in the status of the synechia. We observed a case that misled us into presuming younger age. It is rare that estimated age is higher than a real age. Age estimation is performed from both sides of dental attrition and palatal suture in this time. This case demonstrated a large discrepancy in age estimation between dental attrition and sutures of the palatine bone.

In this case, widening and scissors bite of left upper dental arch was observed as a complication after fracture. Le Fort I type osteotomy of the left maxilla and palatine suture osteotomy were performed and the constriction of the upper dental arch by using a rapid maxillary contraction appliance was rendered. As compared with before the treatment, 2.0mm reduction of maxillary arch on P-A cephalogram, and 3.3mm reduction of the distance of central incisors, 3.9mm reduction of the distance of first bicuspids and 2.6mm reduction of the distance of first molars were observed in the model. Following treatment, the occlusions and aesthetic feeling were recovered satisfactorily in a short time.

The median palatine cyst is a rare benign nonodontogenic lesion that attacks the median palatine suture. There is controversy about its pathogenesis; however, its origin is generally attributed to the enclavement of epithelial remnants within the palatine suture between the 2 lateral maxillary processes during their fusion in the origin of the hard palate. The purpose of this report was to relate a case of a median palatine cyst, discussing the rarity of the lesion, its pathogenesis, and the different modalities that could be used for the correct treatment of this pathologic entity.

International audience; Vault sutures have proven their low reliability for estimating age at death in individual forensic science cases. We broke down the palatine sutures of 134 skulls (with known sex and age at time of death) into 15 subparts and 5 stages of fusion to obtain a mean coefficient of obliteration (Cp) which was then linked to five age classes. We completed this study with multiple regression equations of total palatine suture scores. We compared our results with those obtained using the Mann method on the one hand and classically segmented and scored ectocranial suture age determination methods on the other. Palatine sutures generally do not estimate age at death any better than cranial vault sutures. Despite the partly subjective aspect of suture study, palatine suture observation contributes additional information to age-range estimation, especially in old and very old subjects where other methods lose their effectiveness.

Introduction: Surgical assist during mmediate palatine expansion is enumerted among several procedures utilised in reating maxillary narrowing. There are arious types of this procedure, including nchoring to teeth, to the bone, with partial r complete osteotomy. Surgical proceures based on anchoring the devices to he bone are used in patients after growth purt in order to achieve correction of axillary narrowing, crossbite, crowded nterior teeth and large side corridors in dult patients. Aim of the thesis: Presentation of early reatment results, based on the example of atients, with discussion concerning surical technique, next to initial evaluation egarding functioning of the device. Method: 20 patients treated with Disractor device, preliminary analysis of axillary dental casts models, X-rays and hotos illustrating faces of the patients. The healing of experimental palatal defects and its influence on maxillary growth was studied in 14 beagles operated at 6 to 8 weeks of age. Analogous defects involving the removal of palatal bone and the overlying oral mucoperiosteum were made on each side of the midline. The defect on one side of the midline was covered with an autogenous full-thickness skin graft while that on the opposite side was left to heal by second intention. Healing and maxillary growth were evaluated for up to 46 weeks postoperatively using histological, scanning electron microscopical and biometric techniques. From the time of surgery to the age of 1 year the uncovered area decreased 36 % in size while the area of the skin graft increased 155 %. The presence in the skin graft of hair follicles with the ability to grow hair indicates that the principal structure of the skin graft did not change during the observation period. Nearly complete bone regeneration occurred in the side left uncovered and the palatine suture was in all dogs displaced towards this side. Beneath the skin graft, large bone defects remained and in eight of 10 dogs, a new suturelike structure parallel to the palatine suture was found in the middle. of this side. It is hypothesized that transverse growth on the uncovered side was inhibited due to wound contraction and nearly complete bone regeneration, while translation of bones adjacent to the defect was possible beneath the skin graft due to lower resistance in the skin graft, slow bone formation beneath it and the formation of the suturelike structure. Compensatory growth mechanisms in the dentoalveolar regions permitted the maintenance of proper occlusion.

Maxillary growth after unilateral closure of surgically induced defects in the hard palate in 6- to 8-week old Beagle puppies was studied. The hard palate except for a 4 mm wide strip of bone in the midline and with its overlaying oral mucoperiosteum was removed. On one side the nasal mucoperiosteum was covered with an autogenous full-thickness skin graft (side SGS) and, on the other side the raw surface (side RS) was left for secondary epithelialization. The animals were killed at 47 to 52 weeks of age. Measurements on the dried skulls of the experimental dogs showed no difference in total maxillary length between the two sides of the maxilla. However, the posterior half of the maxilla was longer in 8 dogs on side SGS and the anterior half of the maxilla was in 7 dogs long on side RS. The palatine suture was displaced towards side RS on all dogs, and the height of the nose was in all dogs greater on side SGS. There was a small consistent tendency that the overall growth was more pronounced on the side with the full-thickness skin graft. It is concluded that reducing the amount of scar tissue by covering raw surfaces with an autogenous full-thickness skin graft is one way to reduce maxillary growth impairment after palatal surgery.
