Genetic variability is crucial in improving crops like rice (Oryza sativa L.), focusing on enhancing yield and nutritional quality. In this study 54 rice genotypes were evaluated for phenotypic and genetic variability, heritability, genetic advance, correlations, direct and indirect effects, and genetic diversity on yield attributing traits, yield, and bran oil character. Results showed that traits like flag leaf length, flag leaf width, total number of spikelets, total number of fertile spikelets, test weight, rice bran oil (RBO) percentage, and single plant yield exhibited high values for PCV,GCV, h2,GAM exhibiting its potential for selection in breeding programmes. Correlation studies indicated negative correlation of rice bran oil % with flag leaf length (r = -0.34) which was further confirmed in path analysis where flag leaf length(-0.15) and rice bran oil %(-0.12) had a negative direct effect on single plant yield. Diversity analysis using Mahalanobis's D² categorized the genotypes into 22 distinct groups, highlighting significant genetic diversity. According to the analysis, rice bran oil percentage contributed the most to genetic divergence (37.09%), followed by grain length (22.42%) and test weight (20.07%). This study offers crucial insights for future breeding strategies targeting improved yield and nutritional quality, particularly emphasizing bran oil content and other essential traits. Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are at an increased risk of developing colorectal cancer (CRC), and key contributing factors include chronic colonic inflammation and the extent and duration of disease. This increase in risk is more likely to result from chronic inflammation of the colonic mucosa than from any clearly defined genetic predisposition. However, globally, the true magnitude of this risk is debatable, since results from different studies are heterogeneous in terms of geographical and methodological variables. The prevalence of IBD-related CRC in the Asia-Pacific region ranges from 0.3% to 1.8% and a recent study found that the cumulative incidence of IBD-related CRC is comparable to that in Western countries. However, the CRC mortality rate in the Asia-Pacific region is on the rise compared with that in Western countries, and a few Asian countries show particularly rapid upward trends in CRC incidence. Although our understanding of the molecular and clinical basis for IBD-related CRC has improved substantially, our means of prevention, endoscopic surveillance, chemoprevention, and prophylactic surgery remain modest at best. Furthermore, published data on IBD-related CRC in the Asia-Pacific region is lacking, and this review addresses many aspects including epidemiology, natural history, etiopathogenesis, morphology, and biological behaviors of IBD-related CRC and sporadic CRC in the Asia-Pacific region. In this review, we will also discuss the risk factors for CRC in IBD patients, endoscopic technology screening, and surveillance programs and management strategies for IBD-related CRC. OBJECTIVE: The NOD2/CARD15 gene has been identified as an important susceptibility gene for Crohn's disease (CD) but the three common disease predisposing mutations (DPM) found in developed countries have not been identified in Asian populations. The aim of our study was to look for the DPM in our multiracial population and to discover whether there were any differences in the three major ethnic groups; Malay, Chinese and Indian. METHODS: Blood samples from consecutive CD patients and healthy controls were obtained and analyzed for the three common mutations (R702W, G908R, 1007fs) but in addition to this, we also looked for the SNP5 and JW1 variants which are associated with CD in Ashkenazi Jews. A polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) technique was used to identify the mutations, which was confirmed by sequencing. The baseline socio-demography and clinical characteristics of the CD patients were recorded. RESULTS: Overall 45 patients (three Malays, 15 Chinese, 26 Indians and one other) with confirmed CD and 300 controls were recruited. The three common DPM were not observed in either the CD patients or the controls. Neither the SNP5 nor the JW1 mutation was found in any of the controls. However, the SNP5 mutation was identified in six (13.3%) Indian CD patients and the JW1 mutation in eight CD patients who are different from those carrying the SNP5 mutation: one Malay (33.3%), two Chinese (13.3%), one other (Portuguese) and four Indians (15.4%). The presence of SNP5 was strongly associated with CD in the Indian population and that of JW1 was strongly associated with CD overall and in each of the major ethnic groups. There was a trend towards a younger age of onset and stricturing disease in patients carrying the JW1 mutation.
