Boron is one of the most vital minerals for the growth of the human body, as it helps in managing several harmful bone conditions such as osteoporosis and arthritis. The doping of boron in various quantities into the bioglass system has a noteworthy influence on its structure, glass formation factors, cell viability, and biodegradability. In the present study, in vitro bioactivity of B2O3 containing 45S5 glass was systematically investigated using a sol-gel route and its mechanical and biological properties were evaluated. B2O3 concentrations of 1, 2.5, and 5 wt.% were added to replace the content of silica in the composition of 45S5 without altering the concentration of the other constituents. The crystallization behavior of the glass and the sintered samples was evaluated by XRD analysis. In vitro bioactivity testing was performed in simulated body fluid (SBF) and FESEM analysis was carried out to observe the microstructure in static in vitro condition. The biocompatibility nature of the as-prepared bioglass powders was ascertained via MTT assay. Results revealed a higher in vitro bioactivity in the B2O3 containing 45S5 glass as compared with 45S5 bioglass. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Rare-earth-doped upconversion nano-phosphor shows new possibilities in the field of bioimaging because of its unique properties like higher penetration depth, low signal to noise ratio ( SNR), good photo stability, and zero auto fluorescence. The oxyfluoride glass system is the combination of both fluoride and oxide where fluoride host offers high optical transparency due to low phonon energy and oxide network offers high physical stability. Thus, in the present work, an attempt has been made to synthesize 1 mol% Er3+ doped SiO2-CaF2 glass ceramic nano-particles through sol-gel route. The synthesized glass ceramic particles were heat treated at 4 different temperatures starting from 600°C to 900°C.The X-ray diffraction ( XRD) analysis and Transmission electron microscopy ( TEM) analysis confirmed the formation of CaF2 nano-crystals in the matrix which is 20-30 nm in size. The vibrational spectroscopic analysis of the glass ceramics sample has been investigated by Fourier transform infrared ( FTIR) spectroscopy. The UV-Visible- NIR spectroscopy analysis was carried out to analyze the absorption intensity in the near infrared region. Upon 980 nm excitation, the sample shows red emission corresponds to 4F9/2→4I15/2 energy level transition. Objectives: The aim of the study was to compare the effect of fifth and seventh generation bonding agent on sealant success. Materials and Methods: Sixty-four school children aged six to nine years received sealants in four permanent molars in a split mouth design, such that each patient received sealant in the first permanent molar with fifth generation bonding agent in one arch and seventh generation bonding agent in the other arch; contra-lateral molars were sealed with sealant alone. The evaluation was carried out at baseline, three months, six months and 12 months, according to the criteria by Feigal et al, in 2000. Chi- square test was used to analyze data at P<0.05 level of significance. Results: Statistically significant differences were found for sealant retention between fifth generation and sealant group, and fifth generation and seventh generation groups; whereas, no significant difference was found for sealant retention between seventh generation and sealant group at three, six and 12 months. Conclusion: As separate etch and rinse steps are not required for seventh generation bonding agents, and almost similar results were obtained for both sealant and seventh generation groups, it can be concluded that application of sealant along with a seventh generation bonding agent may enhance sealant success and can be used for caries prevention in preventive programs. It also suggests ways of educating the older population about the importance of dental health.

To find out the acidogenic potential of the commonly consumed freshly prepared fruit juices (Pomegranate, Lime) and commonly consumed commercially available fruit juices ( Guava and Apple) at room temperature on pH of saliva at various time intervals. The double-blind study was done on 40 subjects. During the study, subjects were asked to collect their stimulated saliva in a glass bottle before having juice as a baseline score. Subjects were asked to drink the juice, their saliva sample was collected after 1minute, 5minutes, 15minutes and 30 minutes of drinking juice and the pH of the samples were measured using digital pH meter. All fruit juices were acidic and reduced the salivary pH. The maximum drop in pH was found at after min of consuming fruit juices. Drop in salivary pH was greater after consumption of commercially available fruit juices than that after consumption of fresh fruit juices.
