The antioxidant activities of methanol (ME), ethanol (EE), water (WE) and ethyl acetate (EAE) extracts of four Inula helenium L. taxa (I. helenium ssp. orygalis (Boiss.) Grierson, I. helenium ssp. pseudohelenium Grierson, I. helenium ssp. turcarasemosa Grierson and I. helenium ssp. vanensis Grierson) were investigated. The phosphomolybdenum assay, beta-carotene linoleate bleaching and DPPH radical scavenging activity were used to evaluate the antioxidant capacity. The total phenolic contents determined by Folin-Ciocalteu assay of the extracts ranged from 4.18 to 102.91 mg gallic acid equivalents (GAE)/g dry extract. The extracts showed considerable effect on reducing the oxidation of beta-carotene. The highest radical scavenging activity was obtained for ME of I. helenium ssp. orygalis in DPPH assay. ME, EE and EAE of four Inula helenium taxa showed significant antibacterial activity against 13 bacteria tested. WEs had no inhibitory effect against bacteria tested except for I. helenium ssp. orygalis. EE of I. helenium ssp. orygalis was only effective against C. albicans.

We compared the effects of preincisional peritonsillar infiltration of 5 ml levobupivacaine hydrochloride (50 mg/10 ml) on bleeding during surgery and pain after tonsillectomy in patients aged 16 years or older.The study was conducted in 44 adult patients who underwent tonsillectomy. These patients were randomized to either the study group (SG) who received levobupivacaine infiltration to the peritonsillary fossae prior to surgery, or a control group (CG) treated with 0.9% sodium chloride infiltration to the peritonsillary fossae prior to incision. The volume of intraoperative bleeding was recorded. Pain was evaluated using a visual analogue scale (VAS). The first pain score was assessed immediately after arriving in the postoperative care unit. VAS scores were subsequently re-assessed 2, 4, 8, 12, and 24 hours postoperatively. The first analgesic requirement was assessed 24 hours postoperatively.The pain relieving effect in the levobupivacaine group was statistically significant 2, 4, 12, and 24 hours postoperatively (p ≤ 0.05), but there was no difference in VAS scores between groups at the first and 8-hour postoperative assessments. There were no differences between the two groups regarding analgesic requirements. The difference between the mean intraoperative blood loss in the SG and CG was statistically significant (p ≤ 0.05). No serious complications were observed in either group.Preincisional levobupivacaine infiltration seems to be a safe and easily applied medication for postoperative pain control, and decreased the volume of intraoperative blood loss in adult patients after tonsillectomy.

Quality of life (QOL) assessment in patients with nasal obstruction has not been well studied. The main objectives of this study were to determine the QOL of patients after septorhinoplasty, to measure the efficacy of septorhinoplasty with a validated quality-of-life instrument--the Nasal Obstructive Symptoms Evaluation (NOSE) scale--and with the Glasgow Benefit Inventory (GBI) QOL scores comprising patient assessments of nasal function.The patient population consisted of a consecutive series of 50 patients who underwent septorhinoplasty at the ages of 18 to 48 years between 2009 and 2011. Quality of life was assessed with the NOSE scale (pre- and postoperatively) and with GBI scores (postoperatively). Demographic data, along with patient assessments of nasal obstruction with a linear analogue scale, were recorded.The mean patient age was 28.3 +/- 14.6 years (age range, 18-48 years). Twenty-eight patients were male (56%) and 22 (44%) were women. Evaluation of each of the 5 items on the NOSE scale individually revealed that patients experienced improvement in all areas. In this study, there was a statistically significant fall in all five parameters (p = 0.0000.05). The mean total GBI score was 34.89 +/- 22.53 and the mean general subscale score was 38.25 +/- 24.31. The mean social support score was 19.67 +/- 33.79 and the mean physical health score was 36.67 +/- 27.97. Each patient had improved QOL scores on the GBI and NOSE scales (P0.05).This study found improved QOL after rhinoplasty in Turkish adult patients. With proper pre-operative assessment and selection, excellent functional and psychosocial outcomes can be expected. NOSE and GBI are valuable tools for the assessment of benefit from nasal septal surgery for nasal obstruction and may be applicable in clinical practice.

Total antioxidant status and antifungal activities of three endemic plants from the Munzur Valley in Tunceli, Turkey; Bellevalia gracilis Feinbrun, Muscari aucheri (Boiss.) Baker ve Tulipa armena Boiss. var. lycica (Baker) Marais were evaluated for the first time. Aqueous, hexanic, methanolic and ethanolic extracts were obtained from leaves and bulbs of B. gracilis, M. aucheri ve T. armena var. lycica. Total antioxidant status was determined by using TAS assay kit (Rel assay diagnostics). Antifungal assays were performed according to amended agar method against white rot fungus Coriolus versicolor.Among the plants tested, the leaves of B. gracilis exhibited highest total antioxidant status among all samples evaluated in this study. According to the results, M. aucheri plant exhibited the lowest antioxidant status. The results of this study showed that the aqueous leaf extract of T. armena var. lycica at a concentration 2.5% (w/v) suppressed significantly the radial growth of C. versicolor by 68.00%. It can be concluded that the plant species assayed possess antifungal and antioxidant properties.

In this study, 18 melon cultivars which belong to 3 different botanical varieties (var. inodorus, var. reticulatus and var. cantalupensis) of Cucumis melo were tested in order to investigate genotypes effect on hapioid embryos induction by pollination with pollens irradiated with Co60 gamma ray. Embryos were obtained from gamma ray. Embryos were obtained from 14 genotypes belong to 3 different botanical varieties and these embryos were regenerated into plantlets using in vitro embryo rescue method. In order to obtain dihaploid plants, in vitro hapioid plantlets were firstly treated with 0.5 % colchidne solution for two hours and then they were cloned with in vitro micro cutting. These dihaploid plants were acclimatizated in greenhouse conditions. The percentage of acclimatization were ranged between 57-63 % . Seeds were obtained by selfing from all plants grown in greenhouse. Ploidy levels of hapioid and dihaploid plants verified using both chromosome counting (n=12) on root cells and flow cytometry on leaf cells. Also the measurement of stomata dimension and counting of chroloplast in guard cells were performed in hapioid and dihaploid plants. The results showed that stoma diameter and length of dihaploids were higher than haploids at the rate of 31 % and 58 % respectively. The number of chloroplast was ranged between 6-8 in haploids and 10-12 in diploids.

Fantastic F-1) were grown in soilless culture on nine different growing media: perlite, spent mushroom compost, volcanic tuff, perlite + spent mushroom compost in 3 different ratios (3:1, 1:1, 1:3), and spent mushroom compost + volcanic tuff in 3 different ratios Harvested tomatoes grown on different media were cold stored at 10 degrees C and 85-90% relative humidity to determine the effect of growing medium on cold storage life. During the storage, weight losses, fruit firmness, total soluble solid content, titratable acidity, and ascorbic acid content were investigated. There was no significant difference in total soluble solid content and titratable acidity among growing media. The weight losses of fruits were higher in volcanic tuff (5.51) than in the other media. Firmness of fruits in spent mushroom compost (3.42 kg) and spent mushroom+volcanic tuff (3:1 ratio) (3.25 kg) was higher than other in the media. Ascorbic acid content was higher in fruits of spent mushroom compost+volcanic tuff (1:1 ratio) (24.73 mg/100 ml) than in the other media. In this study, we evaluated the effects of HBO therapy on oxidant and antioxidant status, and some histopathological parameters after partial hepatectomy in rats. There were three main experimental groups. The first group was sham (S) group (n=12), the second group was partial hepatectomized (PH) group (n=24) and the third group was after partial hepatectomy HBO-treated group (PH+HBO) (n=24). The HBO therapy was started the same day as partial hepatectomy for the PH+HBO group. Three subgroups (n=8) were assigned from the PH and HBO groups. The first, the second and the third subgroups were selected randomly, separated from the main groups and killed 2 days, 4 days and 7 days after partial hepatectomy respectively. Randomized selection from the main experimental groups and killing of the animals were done on the same day. Malondialdehyde (MDA), glutathione (GSH), nitric oxide (NO), mitotic index (MI), proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) levels and mean of cells with double nuclei were assessed. In the PH+HBO group, MDA and NO levels were decreased and MI, PCNA, GSH levels were increased significantly compared to the PH group. True nonparasitic splenic cysts are rare. Reports of approximately 30 cases of benign true splenic cysts producing elevated CA 19-9 serum levels have been published. The traditional treatment of splenic epidermoid cysts is splenectomy. However, with all the advances in laparoscopic surgery, conservative laparoscopic approaches are accepted as the most preferred techniques for this benign disease. Laparoscopic cystectomy with its minimal invasiveness and low morbidity is the ideal technique for properly selected patients. So far, only one case report of laparoscopic cystectomy for splenic epidermoid cyst with elevated CA 19-9 levels has been published. This is the second known report of this procedure being performed to remove a splenic epidermoid cyst in a patient with elevated CA 19-9 levels.

This study aims to record accumulation of knowledge on plants which are used as food by local people of Elazig that has a rich culture and a very natural environment. Field study was carried out over a period of approximately two years (2010-2011). During this period, 92 vascular plant specimens were collected. The plants were pressed in the field and prepared for identification. A total of 62 food plants belonging to 28 families were identified in the region. There is no detailed information in the literature with regard to the use of brevipes for human nutrition. It is certained that wild plants being used for nutritional purposes by human beings are also used for medicinal purposes. Highlighting the importance of flora and ethnobotanical inventory studies in terms of the protection and use of plant sources, what is required is the cultivation of endangered plant species, establishment of seedbanks for these plants, recording of their natural habitat as well as conducting studies in order to raise public awareness. © 2015, National Institute of Science Communication and Information Resources (NISCAIR). In this research, crude oil and total phenol contents were determined in 29 unit edible pumpkin seeds genotypes. Fatty acid compositions of these pumpkin seed oils were also investigated. According to the results, oil contents of pumpkin seeds ranged from 22.74% to 39.24%. The major unsaturated fatty acids of the samples were oleic acid (26.14% - 39.97%) and linoleic acid (38.52% - 54.31%); saturated fatty acids were stearic acid (5.01% - 7.87%) and palmitic acid (10.24% - 15.10%). Other fatty acids such as linolenic, myristic, behenic, arachidic acid, etc. were found in small quantities. Total phenol contents of genotypes varied from 0.376 to 0.716 mg GAE/100 g. Results indicated that pumpkin seeds could be used as a new oil source.

Seseli L. is one of the largest genera of the Apiaceae family widely known for their traditional uses as herbal remedies. In the present study, the methanolic and water extracts of two Seseli species, S. gummiferum and S. transcaucasicum were evaluated for their bioactive contents and biological activities. The total phenolic and flavonoid contents in the extracts ranged from 19.09 to 24.33 mg GAE/g and from 0.45 to10.09 mg RE/g, respectively. Moreover, while narcissin was detected as the most abundant component in the methanolic extract of S. transcaucasicum (261.40 µg/g), chlorogenic acid was identified as the major component in all the other extracts, although a high amount was also present in the methanolic S. transcaucasicum extract (107.48–243.12 µg/g). The total antioxidant capacity was also determined by the phosphomolybdenum assay (0.66–1.18 mM TE/g). Other antioxidant assays such as the radical scavenging assays (DPPH: 5.51–11.45 mg TE/g, ABTS: 43.46–51.91 mg TE/g), reducing assays (CUPRAC: 41.67–53.20 mg TE/g, FRAP: 31.26–34.14 mg TE/g), as well as the metal chelating activity assay (14.38–38.57 mg EDTAE/g) were conducted. All the extracts showed inhibitory potential against the enzyme’s amylase (0.12–0.78 mM ACAE/g), acetyl- and butyryl-cholinesterase (0.15–9.71 mg GALAE/g), while only the methanolic extracts acted as inhibitors of tyrosinase (107.15 and 109.37 mg KAE/g) and only the water extract of S. gummiferum displayed anti-glucosidase activity (0.13 mM ACAE/g). Interestingly, the methanolic extracts of both Seseli species showed lower cytotoxicity towards HaCaT cells (IC50: &gt, 500 µg/mL), compared to the water extracts (IC50: 267.8 and 321.41 µg/mL). Besides, only the methanolic extracts showed a slight wound healing effect (28.21 and 31.23%). All extracts showed antibacterial action against Staphylococcus lugdunensis (minimum inhibitory and bactericidal concentrations: 0.025–2 mg/mL). S. gummiferum methanolic extract, which exhibited the highest antibacterial potency was found to inhibit adhesion and invasion of S. lugdunensis to HaCaT cells as well. Taken together, this study demonstrated the two Seseli species to harbour interesting bioactive components, in particular polyphenolics and to exhibit several biological properties that could be further investigated for their potential exploitation as healing agents as supported by various traditional medicinal uses.
