Abstract We have developed an optimized protocol for plasma targeted mRNA sequencing in our previous study. Here, we performed plasma targeted mRNA sequencing for 40 colorectal adenoma patients and 39 colonoscopy-proven normal controls in order to find potential circulating mRNA markers for colorectal adenoma. 4. Submerged turbulence detection with optical satellites

Abstract

During fall periods in 2002, 2003 and 2004 three major oceanographic expeditions were carried out in Mamala Bay, Hawaii. These were part of the RASP Remote Anthropogenic Sensing Program. Ikonos and Quickbird optical satellite images of sea surface glint revealed ~100 m spectral anomalies in km^2 averaging patches in regions leading from the Honolulu Sand Island Municipal Outfall diffuser to distances up to 20 km. To determine the mechanisms behind this phenomenon, the RASP expeditions monitored the waters adjacent to the outfall with an array of hydrographic, optical and turbulence microstructure sensors in anomaly and ambient background regions. Drogue tracks and mean turbulence parameters for 2x10^4 microstructure patches were analyzed to understand complex turbulence, fossil turbulence and zombie turbulence near-vertical internal wave transport processes. The dominant mechanism appears to be generic to stratified natural fluids including planet and star atmospheres and is termed beamed zombie turbulence maser action (BZTMA). Most of the bottom turbulent kinetic energy is converted to ~100 m fossil turbulence waves. These activate secondary (zombie) turbulence in outfall fossil turbulence patches that transmit heat, mass, chemical species, momentum and information vertically to the sea surface for detection in an efficient maser action. Abstract

Competition in nature is traditionally conceptualised as a battle between individual organisms in the constant struggle for survival. The triumph of one organism results in the demise of the other. Cooperation on the other hand involves individuals acting in a mutually beneficial manner and is therefore often regarded as the opposite of competition. From the perspective of individual cells, multicellular life is perhaps the most extreme form of cooperation. However, even within multicellular organisms, cells compete for space and survival. Genetically damaged “loser” cells that grow at a slower rate than their neighbouring “winner” cells are eliminated from the body by apoptosis. Importantly, cell competition is context-dependent; loser cells are perfectly viable if the whole organism is composed of them. The demise of loser cells is triggered specifically by the presence of cells that are perceived to be more fit. Multiple triggers and pathways involved with cell competition have been discovered, but the mechanism by which cells measure and communicate their relative fitness remains elusive. Current models of cell competition assert a priori winner or loser status to competing cell types. By their nature, such models cannot explain how the winner or loser identity is attained. In this thesis, we develop a modelling framework to study the emergence of winners and losers in cell competition. Specifically, we construct models of heterotypic populations where cell types can only vary in their model parameters. Using this approach, we show that i) variations in mechanical parameters are not sufficient for cell competition in a vertex-based model, and ii) winner or loser status in a competition system based on the exchange of death signals is determined by the emission rate of death signals and the tolerance to death signals. Finally, we make concrete suggestions for the experimental validation of our predictions.

Abstract

The maturation of pulsed rotating machines has evolved to the stage where a greater degree of basic research is required to further increase the energy and power density of advanced compulsators. The University of Texas at Austin Center for Electromechanics is studying the combined mechanical and electrical aspects of very high speed compulsator rotor designs for the next generation of compact pulsed rotating machines. This paper describes the design, construction, and testing of three scaled composite rotors. Performance specifications included hoop stresses of 1.7 GPa (250 ksi) in the outer banding and strain excursions of 0.4% in the field coil region. Results from the three studies are reviewed in detail. Techniques developed at the Center for Electromechanics for determining composite rotor performance are also discussed.

Abstract

Financial data from the 10 biggest Indonesian mining companies listed on the Indonesian Stock Exchange (IDX), from the period of 2011 to 2015, were collected and analyzed. The purpose of this study was to establish the relationship among working capital components, including financial performance as measured by return on assets (ROA). The results of the study indicated that there are some weak positive correlations between working capital elements and profitability (return on assets), and some negative correlations between working capital elements and ROA. Abstract

Antibiotic resistance (AR) associated with chronic limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI) poses additional challenges for the management of ischemic leg ulcers, increasing the likelihood of severe outcomes. This study assessed AR prevalence in bacteria isolated from CLTI-associated leg ulcers before (1 January 2017–10 March 2020; n = 69) and during (11 March 2020–31 December 2022; n = 59) the COVID-19 pandemic from patients admitted with positive wound cultures to a regional hospital in Chiang Mai (Thailand). There was a marked reduction in AR rates from 78% pre-pandemic to 42% during the pandemic (p < 0.0001), with rates of polymicrobial infections 22 percentage points lower (from 61% to 39%, respectively; p = 0.014). There were reduced AR rates to amoxicillin/clavulanate (from 42% to 4%; p < 0.0001) and ampicillin (from 16% to 2%; p = 0.017), as well as multidrug resistance (19% to 8%; p = 0.026). Factors associated with increased AR odds were polymicrobial infections (adjusted odds ratio (aOR) 5.6 (95% CI 2.1, 15.0); p = 0.001), gram-negative bacteria (aOR 7.0 (95% CI 2.4, 20.5); p < 0.001), and prior use of antibiotics (aOR 11.9 (95% CI 1.1, 128.2); p = 0.041). Improvements in infection control measures and hygiene practices in the community during the pandemic were likely key factors contributing to lower AR rates. Thus, strategic public health interventions, including community education on hygiene and the informed use of antibiotics, may be crucial in mitigating the challenges posed by AR in CLTI. Further, advocating for more judicious use of empirical antibiotics in clinical settings can balance effective treatment against AR development, thereby improving patient outcomes.

Abstract

A precision measurement of the ratio of the rates of kaon leptonic decays K± â e± v and K± â I¼Â±v with the full minimum bias data sample collected with low intensity 75 GeV/c beam by the NA62 experiment at CERN in 2007-2008 is reported. The result, obtained by analyzing 150,000 reconstructed K ± â e± v candidates with 11% background contamination, has a record precision of 0.4% and is in agreement with the Standard Model expectation. An improved upper limit on the rate of the lepton number violating decay K± â I ±I¼ ±I¼Â± from the NA48/2 experiment, which probes the resonant enhancement of the rate in the presence of heavy Majorana neutrinos in the 100 MeV range, is also reported. The prospects for the searches of lepton number and flavour violating decays of the charged kaon with an improved sensitivity down to 10-12 during the forthcoming main phase of the NA62 experiment are discussed. © Copyright owned by the author(s).

Abstract

The NA62 collaboration is building a new experiment tailored to measure the ultra-rare kaon decay K+ →π +νν. The first physics run is planned in autumn 2014. This paper presents the detectors of the new experiment and reports on the status of construction as well as first results from the Technical Run in November 2012.

Abstract

The decay K+→π+νν¯ is highly suppressed in the Standard Model (SM), while its rate can be predicted with minimal theoretical uncertainty. The branching ratio (BR) for this decay is thus a sensitive probe of the flavor sector of the SM; its measurement, however, is a significant experimental challenge. The primary goal of the NA62 experiment is to measure BR(K+→π+νν¯) with ∼10% precision. This will require the observation of 1013 K+ decays in the experiment's fiducial volume, as well as the use of high-performance systems for precision tracking, particle identification, and photon vetoing. These aspects of the experiment will also allow NA62 to carry out a rich program of searches for lepton flavor and/or number violating K+ decays. Part of the experimental apparatus was commissioned during a technical run in 2012; installation continues and data taking is expected to begin in late 2014. The physics prospects and the status of the NA62 experiment are reviewed.

The 21st century business environment demands superior performance, and high outcomes. Best management practices are seen as the ways to meet such demands and challenges. Abstract

Purpose: Singapore’s education system is known for its robust curriculum and excellent results. It is also a system of keen competitiveness and high pressure. This article addresses how such an education system responds to the issue of student well-being. Design/Approach/Methods: This article analyses the recent initiatives and shift in education philosophy in Singapore’s education system, which have a bearing on the issue of student well-being. Findings: This article argues that while there are direct efforts to address student well-being, the direction Singapore is taking is to pursue a holistic education paradigm, in which education is engaging, joyful, meaningful, and values-based. This article also argues that such a paradigm goes beyond the current well-being agenda and is aligned with a view that education should be about wholeness and purpose. While there are challenges associated with these changes, the Singapore experience suggests that the more we focus on holistic education, rather than interpret student well-being narrowly, the more wellness the students may actually and eventually experience. Originality/Value: This article brings to readers learning points from Singapore regarding student well-being, as the country grapples with change to develop a generation of young people, whose beings are and will continue to be well .

Abstract

The purpose of the article is to identify the basic trends in the settlement of migrant workers in the Russian Federation. The methodology of the research was based on the humanistic approach, which allowed focusing on the problems of labor migrants’ life activity and their search for value-based orientations. The systemic and comprehensive approach allowed identifying and substantiating the directions of the trends in the settlement of labor migrants by regions and districts of Russia. The comparative analysis of scientific works helped to identify the causes of settlement of labor migrants by place of their labor activity. Two identified opposing trends are the main results of the study. The first is dispersed settlement, which objectively promotes the integration process of representatives of immigrant ethnic groups into the urban environment of the area of residence, at the expense of a simultaneous weakening of intra-ethnic social ties and an increase in the depth and density of contacts with the local population. The second is the opposite trend – the self-isolation of immigrant groups within the framework of compact settlements, leading to the emergence of large ethnic diasporas of migrants in certain areas of the hosting country. The novelty of the study comes from an original approach to the identification and justification of migrants’ settlement trends in the socio-economic conditions of modern Russia.

Abstract

The pseudoplastic (shear thinning) behavior of fully synthetic and chemically modified natural printing thickeners was examined by measuring the dependence of apparent viscosity on shear rate and on concentration. Observations were fitted to a mathematical model by use of multiple polynomial regression analysis. The familiar power law or log viscosity-log shear rate equation was approximated for a limited range of the variables. A more exact model included interaction effects and second order terms. The mean linear dependence of log viscosity on log shear rate (called the shear thinning index) was sufficiently precise to show significant differences among thickeners of different composition. Binary mixtures of anionic thickeners had flow properties intermediate between those of the two components. Mixing synthetic "resins" with cellulosic gums gave a series of solutions covering a wide and continuous spectrum of flow properties. The range of flow properties of commercial thickeners falls within the range encompassed by the chemical products examined. Comparison of thickeners by means of a shear thinning index is more useful and descriptive than a forced and arbitrary classification into either long or short flow thickeners.
