Purpose: Patients with cancer may experience pain from cancer itself or its treatment. Additionally, chronic pain (CP) predating a patient’s cancer diagnosis may make the etiology of pain less clear and the management of pain more complex. In this brief report, we investigated differences in biopsychosocial characteristics, pain severity, and opioid consumption, comparing groups of cancer patients with and without a history of CP who presented to the emergency department (ED) with a complaint of cancer-related pain. Methods: This secondary analysis of a prospective cohort study included patients with cancer who presented to the ED with a complaint of pain (≥ 4/10). Sociodemographic, clinical, psychological, and pain characteristics were assessed in the ED and subsequent hospitalization. Mann-Whitney U-, T-, and Chi-square tests were used to compare differences between patients with and without pre-existing CP before cancer. Results: Patients with pre-existing CP had lower income (p = 0.21) and less formal education (p = 0.25) and were more likely to have a diagnosis of depression or substance use disorder (p< 0.01). Patients with pre-existing CP reported significantly greater pain severity in the ED and during hospitalization compared to those without pre-existing CP (p< 0.05), despite receiving greater amounts of opioid analgesics (p = 0.036). Conclusion: Identifying a history of pre-existing CP during intake may help identify patients with cancer with difficult to manage pain, who may particularly benefit from multimodal interventions and supportive care. In addition, referral of these patients for the management of co-occurring pain disorders may help decrease the usage of the ED for undertreated pain. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Occupational therapy can improve physical activity, anxiety, and goal achievement after high tibial osteotomy. However, the role of psychological factors in physical activity and goal attainment after high tibial osteotomy is unclear. We examined how psychological factors mediate the relationship between physical activity and goal achievement. Participants included 55 individuals post-high tibial osteotomy. Physical activity and performance and satisfaction in everyday tasks had a significant indirect effect on the anxiety and depression. Anxiety and depression mediated the physical activity–goal attainment relationship. Thus, occupational therapy practices focusing on anxiety and depression may be important in post- high tibial osteotomy rehabilitation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Summary: Virtual reality‐delivered psychological therapies have recently been investigated as non‐pharmacological management for acute and chronic pain. However, no virtual reality pain therapy software existed that met the needs of cancer patients with neuropathic pain. We created a bespoke virtual reality‐delivered pain therapy software programme to help cancer patients manage neuropathic pain incorporating guided visualisation and progressive muscle relaxation techniques, whilst minimising the risk of cybersickness in this vulnerable patient population. This randomised controlled pilot study evaluated the feasibility, acceptability, recruitment rates and risk of cybersickness of this pain therapy software programme. Clinical outcomes including opioid consumption, pain severity, pain interference and global quality of life scores were secondary aims. Of 87 eligible cancer patients with neuropathic pain, 39 were recruited (47%), allocated to either the intervention (20 patients, virtual reality pain therapy software programme) or control (19 patients, viewing virtual reality videos). Four patients withdrew before the 3‐month follow‐up (all in the control group). Pre‐existing dizziness (Spearman ρ 0.37, p = 0.02) and pre‐existing nausea (Spearman ρ 0.81, p < 0.001) were significantly associated with risk of cybersickness in both groups. Patients in the intervention group reported less cybersickness, as well as tolerated and completed all therapy sessions. At 1‐ and 3‐month follow‐up, there were trends in the intervention group towards reductions in: oral morphine equivalent daily dose opioid consumption (−8 mg and −4 mg; vs. control: 0 mg and +15 mg respectively); modified Brief Pain Inventory pain severity (−0.4, −0.8; vs. control +0.4, −0.3); and pain interference (−0.9, −1.8; vs. control −0.2, −0.3) scores. The global quality of life subscale from the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire‐C30 was not significantly changed between groups at 1 and 3 months (intervention: −5, −8; vs. control: +3, +4). This newly created virtual reality‐delivered pain therapy software programme was shown to be feasible and acceptable to cancer patients with neuropathic pain. Abstract We examined the effectiveness of occupational therapy intervention combined with standard rehabilitation in patients undergoing high tibial osteotomy (HTO). Overall, 115 patients with HTO for knee osteoarthritis were examined. An intervention group (n = 50), who received occupational therapy and standard rehabilitation, was compared to a control group (n = 65), who underwent standard rehabilitation only (n = 65). Compared with the control group, the intervention group had significantly lower Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale depression and anxiety scores (both p < 0.05), with between-group differences showing large- and medium-effect sizes, respectively (d = 1.06 and 0.61). Results suggest occupational therapy with rehabilitation during hospitalization improves depression and anxiety rates in patients post-HTO. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective To determine, among patients with chronic pain who had received pain physician referral to pain psychology, the rate of establishing care and factors related to establishing care with pain psychology. Design Retrospective study. Setting Academic tertiary care center. Subjects Patients from the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) Center for Pain Medicine. Methods This was an institutional review board–approved, retrospective study of 150 consecutive referrals of unique patients from UCSD Pain Medicine to UCSD Pain Psychology. Results Of 150 patients referred to pain psychology, 74 (49.3%) established care with pain psychology. Of 98 patients who had previously seen mental health services, 58 established care with pain psychology (59.2%; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 49% to 69%), whereas of 52 patients who had not previously seen mental health services, 16 established care with pain psychology (30.8%; 95% CI: 18% to 43%) (odds ratio [OR] 3.26; 95% CI: 1.60 to 6.66). In the patient subset with depression and/or anxiety, of 82 patients who had previously seen mental health services, 47 established care with pain psychology (57.3%; 95% CI: 47% to 68%), whereas of 20 patients who had not previously seen mental health services, three established care with pain psychology (15%; 95% CI: –1% to 31%) (OR 7.61; 95% CI: 2.07 to 28.01). Of 96 patients referred for general pain psychology evaluations, 43 established care (45%; 95% CI: 35% to 55%), whereas of 38 patients referred for preprocedural evaluation for an implantable device, 24 established care (63%; 95% CI: 48% to 78%). Conclusion Patients are significantly more likely to establish care with pain psychology if they have previously seen a mental health professional. This was even more marked among the patient subset with a history of depression and/or anxiety who had engaged in mental health services than among those with a history of depression and/or anxiety who had not engaged in mental health services. Whether referral was for general psychological evaluation or preprocedural evaluation for an implantable device did not significantly influence whether patients established care. Aim: Pain and anxiety levels in palliative care patients negatively impact their quality of life, highlighting the need for research on non-pharmacological methods. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of music and aromatherapy interventions on pain, anxiety, and stress levels in these patients., Material and Methods: The research was designed as a single-blind, four-group, randomized controlled trial. The sample consisted of 88 patients hospitalized in a palliative care center (receiving palliative care services with terminal or advanced diseases). Patients were randomly assigned to four groups (n = 22, music, aromatherapy, music and aromatherapy, and control group). Patients in the experimental groups received the intervention to which they were assigned for 20 min each day for three consecutive days: music, aromatherapy, or music accompanied by aromatherapy. No intervention was applied to the control group. The patients' levels of pain, anxiety, and stress were assessed before and after the intervention using the Visual Analog Scale (VAS), the Facial Anxiety Scale (FAS), and the Distress Thermometer., Results: No significant differences were found in the demographic characteristics of the groups (p > 0.05). The Wilcoxon Signed-Rank and Kruskal-Wallis tests indicated statistically significant differences in pre- and post-intervention scores for VAS, FAS, and Distress across all experimental groups on all follow-up days (p < 0.05)., Conclusion: Implementing music, aromatherapy, and their combination effectively reduced pain, anxiety, and stress levels in palliative care patients, suggesting these non-pharmacological interventions can improve their quality of life., Trial Registration: ClinicalTrails.gov (Registration number: NCT06024954) at 05-SEP-2024., (© 2024. Background: Electroencephalography (EEG) is a promising tool for identifying the physiological biomarkers of fibromyalgia (FM). Evidence suggests differences in power band and density between individuals with FM and healthy controls. EEG changes appear to be associated with pain intensity; however, their relationship with the quality of pain has not been examined. We aimed to investigate whether abnormal EEG in the frontal and central points of the 10-20 EEG system in individuals with FM is associated with pain's sensory-discriminative and affective-motivational dimensions. The association between EEG and the two dimensions of emotional disorders (depression and anxiety) was also investigated., Methods: In this cross-sectional pilot study, pain experience (pain rating index [PRI]) and two dimensions of emotional disorders (depression and anxiety) were assessed using the McGill Pain Questionnaire (PRI-sensory and PRI-affective) and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), respectively. In quantitative EEG analysis, the relative spectral power of each frequency band (delta, theta, alpha, and beta) was identified in the frontal and central points during rest., Results: A negative correlation was found between the relative spectral power for the delta bands in the frontal (r= -0.656; p = 0.028) and central points (r= -0.624; p = 0.040) and the PRI-affective scores. A positive correlation was found between the alpha bands in the frontal (r = 0.642; p = 0.033) and central points (r = 0.642; p = 0.033) and the PRI-affective scores. Introduction: There are currently no published studies using patient reviews of pain physicians to quantitatively assess patient preferences for pain physician attributes. The aim of the present study was to use natural language processing to quantitatively analyze patient reviews of pain physicians by determining the effect of physician demographics and word frequency on positive review outcomes., Methods: Using a peer-reviewed algorithm, online Healthgrades reviews of pain physicians practicing in the USA were scored according to their positive sentiment from -1 to 1. These sentiment scores and star ratings were used to compare physicians by age, gender and region of practice. Frequency analysis of words and bigrams was performed for all reviews., Results: There were 15 101 reviews collected among 1275 pain physicians which showed male physicians received higher star ratings and review sentiment scores than female physicians. Pain physicians younger than 55 years received higher star ratings and sentiment scores than those of 55 years and older. Frequency analysis revealed that words most commonly used in the more positive patient reviews included 'care', 'professional', 'patient', 'help' and 'kind'; the words most commonly used in less positive reviews included 'pain', 'back', 'office', 'time' and 'years'., Conclusions: Male and/or younger pain physicians receive more positive reviews. Patients highly rate pain physicians who are perceived as personable. Migraine can cause different pain activity patterns. This cross-sectional study examines the relationship between pain activity patterns and physical and psychological aspects and sleep quality in women with migraine. Women diagnosed with migraine ( n  = 129) were reached through social media and announcements. Outcome measures were Pattern of Activity Measure-Pain (POAM-P) (avoidance, overdoing, pacing), Migraine Disability Assessment Scale (MIDAS), International Physical Activity Questionnaire-Short Form (IPAQ-SF), Depression Anxiety Stress Scale-21 (DASS-21), the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). While there was a negative correlation between the POAMP-avoidance and the IPAQ-SF rho = -0.178), there were positive correlations between the POAMP-avoidance and the MIDAS (rho = 0.454), the DASS-21-depression (rho = 0.413), the DASS-21-anxiety (rho = 0.321), and the DASS-21-stress (rho = 0.446). There were positive correlations between the POAMP-overdoing, and the DASS-21-depression (rho = 0.229), the DASS-21-stress (rho = 0.207), and the PSQI (rho = 0.217). There were also positive correlations between the POAMP-pacing and the MIDAS (rho = 0.283), the DASS-21-depression (rho = 0.250), and the DASS-21-anxiety (rho = 0.213) ( p < .05). Pain activity patterns in women with migraines were associated with their disability, physical activity, psychological state, and sleep quality. Determining treatment based on pain activity patterns can improve migraine treatment outcomes.

Objective: Expectations are highlighted as a key component in placebo effects. However, there are different approaches to whether and how placebo studies should account for expectations, and the direct contribution has yet to be estimated in meta-analyses. Using different methodological approaches, this meta-analysis and systematic review examines the extent to which expectations contribute to pain in placebo studies., Methods: The databases PubMed, PsycINFO, Embase, and Web of Science were searched for placebo analgesia mechanism studies with numerical measures of both expectations and pain. Thirty-one studies, comprising 34 independent study populations (1566 subjects: patients and healthy participants) were included. Two meta-analyses were conducted: meta-analysis 1, using study-level data, estimated the effect of expectation interventions without taking measures of expectations into account (expectations assumed); and meta-analysis 2, using individual-level data, estimated the direct impact of participants' expectations on pain (expectations assessed). Risk of bias was assessed using the Cochrane risk-of-bias tool., Results: Meta-analysis 1 showed a moderate effect of expectation interventions over no expectation intervention on pain intensity (Hedges g = 0.45, I2 = 54.19). Based on 10 studies providing individual-level data, meta-analysis 2 showed that expectations predicted pain intensity in placebo and control groups ( b = 0.36, SE = 0.05), although inconsistently across study methodologies., Conclusions: Participants' expectations contributed moderately to pain in placebo analgesia studies. Introduction: Older adults are increasingly using medical cannabis (MC). It is unclear if therapeutic effects increase problematic use patterns. The current study addresses this issue by examining symptom trajectories across the day and using trajectories to predict problematic use., Methods: One-hundred six older adults (age range 55-74) who endorsed medical conditions approved for treatment using MC were recruited online. Participants received six text messages/day to assess momentary symptoms for 15 days., Results: Participants provided 5,156 momentary assessments across 1,106 use days. Symptom trajectories were examined across the day. There was a decline in all symptoms following use. Negative affect, pain, and nausea evinced momentary negative reinforcement associations with cannabis intoxication. Momentary negative reinforcement was associated with adverse cannabis outcomes. Declines in post-use trauma symptoms and momentary negative reinforcement effects for negative affect were both associated with cannabis use disorder symptoms., Discussion: These data suggest that MC may be effective in reducing common symptom clusters. However, the negative reinforcing effect (i.e., the link between use and symptom relief at the event level) may complicate the therapeutic nature (i.e., symptom reduction). Abstract: Research has consistently suggested that media consumption plays a vital role in children's socialization, including the socialization of painful experiences. Past research examining young children's popular media revealed worrisome trends in media depictions of pain; it consisted of narrow depictions of pain, gender stereotypes, and an overwhelming lack of empathy from observers, which could contribute to pain-related stigma. Research has not yet examined how pain is portrayed in adolescent media, despite adolescence being the developmental period when chronic pain often emerges. The current study extracted a cross-section of popular adolescent media selected based on popularity, including 10 movies and the first seasons of 6 TV shows. Pain instances were coded using 2 established observational coding schemes assessing sufferer pain characteristics and observer responses. Across 616 instances of pain, there was a preponderance of violence and injuries, whereas everyday, chronic-type, and medical/procedural pains were seldom represented. Individuals from marginalized (ie, gender diverse, girls) and minoritized groups (individuals with racialized identities) were underrepresented in pain instances. Furthermore, regardless of observed gender or "race," observers displayed a lack of empathy for sufferers and rarely engaged in prosocial behaviors. Popular media may serve as an agent of socialization in adolescence; thus, pain depictions may be a powerful force in propagating pain-related stigma and inequities. Objective: The influence of unconscious emotional processes on pain remains poorly understood. The present study tested whether cues to forgotten unpleasant images might amplify pain (i.e., in the absence of conscious recall)., Methods: Seventy-two healthy female adults (19 to 34 years) performed an adapted Think/No-think paradigm (T/NT) using 72 combinations of neutral face images (cues) paired with 36 neutral and 36 unpleasant images. After completion of the T/NT task, cues associated with forgotten neutral or unpleasant images were identified. Cues to either neutral or unpleasant images from the NT condition were then presented in randomized order while participants received intermediate-level thermal pain stimulation on the left hand. Ratings of both pain intensity and unpleasantness were acquired after each trial., Results: Mean pain unpleasantness ratings were greater during presentation of cues to forgotten negative versus neutral images (5.52 [SD = 2.06] versus 5.23 [SD = 2.10]; p = .02). This pattern was also present when comparing cues to remembered negative versus neutral images (5.62 [SD = 1.94] versus 5.04 [SD = 1.90]; p < .001). Mean pain intensity ratings were higher for cues to negative versus neutral images when remembered (5.48 [SD = 1.79] versus 5.00 [SD = 1.69]; p < .001), but not when forgotten (5.27 [SD = 1.96] versus 5.16 [SD = 1.93]; p = .30)., Conclusions: Using an adapted T/NT-Pain paradigm, this study demonstrated that cues to nonrecallable (but potentially unconsciously activated) negative emotional memories amplify pain unpleasantness, similar to known effects of conscious negative emotions., (Copyright © 2024 by the American Psychosomatic Society.)

Objective: The objective of this prospective study was to measure the level of pain and anxiety before, during, and after an oral biopsy, and fear memory 7 days following the procedure., Study Design: This was a single-center, prospective, survey-based observational pilot study of patients seen from April 2022 to June 2023 at the Sol Silverman Oral Medicine Clinic, at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF). We assessed the level of pain and anxiety before, during, and after oral biopsies and a fear memory interview on the 7th day post oral biopsy., Results: Sixty patients participated in the study (median age: 56.5 years (range: 20-95 years); 65% females). Most patients had a punch oral biopsy (84%). The median score for pain was 2 (range 0-9) on day 1 post biopsy and 0 (range 0-4) on day 7 post biopsy (p < .0001); the median score for anxiety was 0 (range 0-3) on day 1 post biopsy and 0 (range 0-2) on day 7 post biopsy. Adults' emotional reactions to the pain and pleasure of others are influenced by the moral character of those individuals. However, it remains unclear whether children's emotional responses also show such selectivity. To investigate this, we compared 4- to 8-year-old children's emotional responses to the physical pain and pleasure of prosocial versus antisocial puppets. In Study 1, children reported unhappiness after witnessing the pain of the prosocial and antisocial puppets but reported less unhappiness after witnessing the pain of the antisocial puppet. In Study 2, children reported happiness after witnessing the pleasure of both puppets but reported being less happy for the antisocial puppet. These results suggest that children are less likely to empathize with antisocial individuals. Meanwhile, children did not display Schadenfreude (pleasure at others' pain) or Gluckschmerz (displeasure at others' pleasure) toward antisocial individuals in our studies. Moreover, the selectivity of children's emotional responses disappeared after we manipulated the physical competence rather than the moral character of the puppets in Study 3. Abstract: People experiencing kinesiophobia are more likely to develop persistent disabilities and chronic pain. However, the impact of kinesiophobia on the motor system remains poorly understood. We investigated whether kinesiophobia could modulate shoulder pain-induced changes in (1) kinematic parameters and muscle activation during functional movement and (2) corticospinal excitability. Thirty healthy, pain-free subjects took part in the study. Shoulder, elbow, and finger kinematics, as well as electromyographic activity of the upper trapezius and anterior deltoid muscles, were recorded while subjects performed a pointing task before and during pain induced by capsaicin at the shoulder. Anterior deltoid cortical changes in excitability were assessed through the slope of transcranial magnetic stimulation input-output curves obtained before and during pain. Results revealed that pain reduced shoulder electromyographic activity and had a variable effect on finger kinematics, with individuals with higher kinesiophobia showing greater reduction in finger target traveled distance. Kinesiophobia scores were also correlated with the changes in deltoid corticospinal excitability, suggesting that the latter can influence motor activity as soon as the motor signal emerges. Racial disparities in pediatric pain care are prevalent across a variety of health care settings, and likely contribute to broader disparities in health, morbidity, and mortality. The present research expands on prior work demonstrating potential perceptual contributions to pain care disparities in adults and tests whether racial bias in pain perception extends to child targets. We examined the perception and hypothetical treatment of pain in Black and White boys (experiment 1), Black and White boys and girls (experiment 2), Black and White boys and adult men (experiment 3), and Black, White, Asian, and Latinx boys (experiment 4). Across this work, pain was less readily perceived on Black (vs White) boys' faces-though this bias was not observed within girls. Moreover, this perceptual bias was comparable in magnitude to the same bias measured with adult targets and consistently predicted bias in hypothetical treatment. Notably, bias was not limited to Black targets-pain on Hispanic/Latinx boys' faces was also relatively underperceived. Taken together, these results offer strong evidence for racial bias in pediatric pain perception. PERSPECTIVE: This article demonstrates perceptual contributions to racial bias in pediatric pain recognition. Participants consistently saw pain less readily on Black boys' faces, compared with White boys, and this perceptual bias consistently predicted race-based gaps in treatment. Secondary mechanical hypersensitivity, a common symptom of neuropathic pain, reflects increased responsiveness of nociceptive pathways and can be induced temporarily in healthy volunteers using high-frequency electrical stimulation of the skin. Expectations modulate acute pain perception and fear of pain has been shown to attenuate and amplify the placebo and nocebo effects, respectively. However, the role of expectations and fear in the development of mechanical secondary hypersensitivity remains unclear. The modulatory role of fear and expectations in the development of mechanical secondary hypersensitivity remains so far mainly correlational. Here, we randomly assigned healthy participants (women) to a placebo, nocebo, or control group. In the experimental groups, participants' expectations of pain were manipulated using verbal suggestions accompanied by an inert treatment. Fear of pain was evaluated both in terms of fear of pain and via questionnaires. Sensitivity to mechanical stimulation was assessed by self-reported pinprick ratings before and after high-frequency stimulation; pinprick-evoked potentials elicited by the stimulation were recorded. The placebo group developed the least mechanical secondary hypersensitivity (smaller proximal-distal spread), while the nocebo group developed the most, but only when outliers were excluded. Higher expectations of pain predicted a greater development of mechanical secondary hypersensitivity. Anticipatory pain-related fear only mediated the relationship between unpleasantness expectations and perceived pinprick unpleasantness. Dispositional fear of pain moderated the relationship between expectations and the perceived intensity and unpleasantness of pinpricks. No group differences were observed in pinprick-evoked potentials. We provide preliminary evidence that both expectations and fear impact the development of mechanical secondary hypersensitivity. Objectives: In the present study, our aim was to deepen the understanding of suicidality in older men by adopting a biopsychosocial approach. The study focused on older men as they face an elevated risk of suicide, surpassing not only other age groups but also exhibiting higher rates compared to women. We examined the contribution of mental pain as a mediator in the association between attachment avoidance and suicidal ideation among older men, taking into consideration the severity of their physical illnesses., Methods: Participants were 200 men in Israel, aged ≥65 years, living in the community and without cognitive impairment. Data collection was based on self-report measures of suicidal ideation (Beck Scale for Suicidal Ideation, BSSI), attachment (Experience in Close Relationships, ECR-R), mental pain (Orbach and Mikulincer Mental Pain Scale, OMMP), and the severity of physical illnesses (Cumulative Illnesses Rating Scale, CIRS)., Results: Mental pain was found to mediate the association between attachment avoidance and suicidal ideation, but only among participants with higher levels of physical illnesses., Conclusions: Mental pain should be considered as a complication of an avoidant coping strategy, which increases the risk of suicide among older men, especially those suffering from significant physical illnesses. The theoretical and clinical implications of these findings are discussed.

Racism increases pain sensitization and contributes to racialized pain inequities; however, research has not tested interventions targeting racism to reduce pain. In this study, we examined whether White bystanders can act to mitigate racism's pain-sensitizing effects. To simulate racial exclusion in the laboratory, Black young adults (age 18-30; N = 92) were randomly assigned to be included or excluded by White players in a ball-tossing game (Cyberball). For half of the excluded participants, White bystanders acknowledged and apologized for the racial exclusion. Participants completed a cold pressor task to assess pain threshold, tolerance, and unpleasantness, and completed a survey assessing psychological needs (ie, belongingness, self-esteem, meaningful existence, and self-control). Participants who experienced racial exclusion reported significantly more threatened psychological needs and increased laboratory pain sensitization (ie, lower pain threshold and tolerance) than those who were included. However, when a White bystander acknowledged the racism, excluded participants reported higher levels of self-control, self-esteem, and decreased pain sensitization (pain threshold and tolerance) relative to excluded participants whose experience was not acknowledged. Our findings support that racism increased Black people's pain sensitivity and provide initial evidence for White bystander acknowledgment as a health intervention. PERSPECTIVE: Continual exposure to racism likely contributes to inequities in pain sensitization. We demonstrate that acute exposure to mild racism increases acute pain sensitization. Results suggest that a bystander acknowledging witnessed racism can buffer the acute sensitizing effects of racism on pain, pointing to the potential of interpersonal interventions targeting racism. Abstract: Negative attitudes/beliefs surrounding osteoarthritis, pain, and activity contribute to reduced physical activity in people with knee osteoarthritis (KOA). These attitudes/beliefs are assessed using self-report questionnaires, relying on information one is consciously aware of and willing to disclose. Automatic (ie, implicit) assessment of attitudes does not rely on conscious reflection and may identify features unique from self-report. We developed an implicit association test that explored associations between images of a person moving/twisting their knee (activity) or sitting/standing (rest), and perceived threat (safe vs dangerous). We hypothesised that people with KOA would have greater implicit threat-activity associations (vs pain-free and non-knee pain controls), with implicit attitudes only weakly correlating with self-reported measures (pain knowledge, osteoarthritis/pain/activity beliefs, fear of movement). Participants (n = 558) completed an online survey: 223 had painful KOA (n = 157 female, 64.5 ± 8.9 years); 207 were pain free (n = 157 female, 49.3 ± 15.3 years); and 99 had non-KOA lower limb pain (n = 74 female, 47.5 ± 15.04 years). An implicit association between "danger" and "activity" was present in those with and without limb pain (KOA: 0.36, 95% CI 0.28-0.44; pain free: 0.13, 95% CI 0.04-0.22; non-KOA lower limb pain 0.11, 95% CI -0.03 to 0.24) but was significantly greater in the KOA group than in the pain free ( P < 0.001) and non-KOA lower limb pain ( P = 0.004) groups. Correlations between implicit and self-reported measures were nonsignificant or weak (rho = -0.29 to 0.19, P < 0.001 to P = 0.767). People with painful KOA hold heightened implicit threat-activity associations, capturing information unique to that from self-report questionnaires. Relatively recently, in 2009, experimental studies were undertaken to determine the role of social observational learning in forming hypoalgesic, analgesic and hyperalgesic responses to a placebo. The research findings obtained in studies published before 2018 were integrated and formed the basis of the theoretical model of social learning of placebo effects in pain proposed by Bajcar and Bąbel. This model considered the involvement of different types of modeling (ie, behavioral modeling, symbolic modeling, and verbal modeling) in shaping placebo hypoalgesia/analgesia and nocebo hyperalgesia. The model assumed that pain expectancies might be involved in observationally induced placebo effects in pain and that the effectiveness of observational learning in shaping placebo effects could be moderated by the observer's dispositions, especially empathy. Based on the latest research data, we propose a modified and significantly extended version of this model. The revised model includes the involvement of particular types of modeling in placebo effects and their role in shaping conscious pain-related expectancies. It explains the role of dispositional empathy in shaping observationally induced placebo effects. Notably, the extended version of the model considers the contribution of the characteristics of the observed person to the magnitude of placebo effects induced by social learning. PERSPECTIVE: The paper proposes a comprehensive theoretical approach to explaining the role of observational learning in shaping placebo effects in pain. Pain in adolescence can lead to the development of serious mental health issues, including suicidality. This risk may be strengthened among youth exposed to more adverse childhood experiences (ACEs; abuse, neglect, household challenges). This longitudinal study examined the role of ACEs in the relationship between pain and later suicidality onset and severity among a cohort of adolescents at risk for developing mental health problems. Participants were 139 healthy youth (M age = 13.74 years, standard deviation = 1.56, 64% female) between the ages of 11 to 17 years, recruited based on parental history of depression or anxiety. Youth completed validated measures of internalizing symptoms, ACEs, and pain characteristics at baseline and follow-up diagnostic interviews 9 and/or 18 months later to assess for onset and severity of suicidality. After controlling for demographics, baseline internalizing symptoms, and ACEs, worse pain interference and increased ACEs at baseline predicted increased suicidality severity at follow-up. Moderation analyses revealed that there was a significant interaction between ACEs and pain interference and pain intensity. Increased pain interference (b = 7.65, P < .0001) or intensity (b = 6.96, P = .0003) was only associated with increased suicidality severity at follow-up in youth with high levels of ACEs. This study demonstrates that ACEs strengthen the relationship between pain and later suicidality severity among youth at risk of developing mental health problems. Findings underscore the critical need to adopt a trauma-informed lens to pediatric pain prevention and treatment (eg, screening for ACEs) and for the pain to be on the child's mental health agenda. PERSPECTIVE: This article provides evidence that, while pain is a risk factor for future increased suicidality severity, it is a particularly strong risk factor in youth who experienced increased childhood adversity. Objective: Explore the perceptions of senior medical students on the relationship between gender and pain and examine how formal and hidden curricula in medical education shape their experiences., Design: We conducted a cross-sectional qualitative interview study, using individual semistructured interviews and adhering to interpretative description methodology. We used Braun and Clarke's reflexive approach to thematic analysis to analyse our data., Setting: Six medical schools across the UK. Data collection occurred between the autumn of 2022 and the spring of 2023., Participants: 14 senior (penultimate or final year) medical students., Results: We created three themes, which describe key educational forces shaping students' experiences of the relationship between gender and pain. These are (1) the sociocultural influencer, (2) the pedagogical influencer and (3) the professorial influencer. Our findings highlight the influence of both wider societal norms and students' own identities on their experiences. Further, we explore the nature and detrimental role of formal curricular gaps, and negative role modelling as a key mechanism by which a hidden curriculum relating to gender and pain exerts its influence., Conclusions: These findings have several educational implications, including the need for a more holistic, person-centred approach to pain management within medical school curricula. Additionally, we recommend the creation of reflective spaces to engage students in critical thinking around bias and advocacy from the early stages of their training. The social isolation imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic interrupted in-person activities, which were immediately followed by adaptations to ensure, for example, the continuity of teaching. This generated emotional impacts on the academic community. Emotional states may trigger or emphasize conditions such as temporomandibular dysfunction (TMD), causing pain and limiting masticatory function. This study aimed to compare the students and the faculty of a medical school first in terms of the TMD-caused pain they experienced during social isolation and reported two months later, according to their recollections, using the TMD-Pain Screener questionnaire. The second basis for comparison was the emotional state generated by social isolation and its connection with TMD symptoms assessed through the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS-21), which considers perceptions at the time of data collection. Both questionnaires were responded to in May 2022 after the end of social isolation. The data were analyzed by the IBM-SPSS software for Windows 22.0 with a 5% level of significance. The results show that the self-reported TMD symptoms were more widespread (p = 0.002) and intense (p = 0.013) among students than among faculty and that all of the former's DASS-21 domains (depression, anxiety, and stress) were also more strongly evident (p<0.05). Only anxiety was more significant among the faculty (p = 0.027). Both groups pointed to social isolation as an aggravating factor of the symptoms (p<0.05). The conclusion is that the self-reported TMD-caused pain and all DASS-21 domains as experienced during social isolation were stronger and more prevalent among students than among faculty, and that only anxiety was statistically significant among faculty. Physical pain and negative emotions represent two distinct drinking motives that contribute to harmful alcohol use. Proactive avoidance, in contrast, can reduce consumption in response to these motives but appears to be impaired in those with problem drinking. Despite such evidence, proactive avoidance and its underlying neural deficits have not been assessed experimentally. How these deficits inter-relate with drinking motives to influence alcohol use also remains unclear. The current study leveraged neuroimaging data in forty-one problem and forty-one social drinkers who performed a probabilistic learning go/nogo task featuring proactive avoidance of painful outcomes. We identified the brain responses to proactive avoidance and contrasted the neural correlates of drinking to avoid negative emotions vs. physical pain. Behavioral results confirmed proactive avoidance deficits in problem drinking individuals' learning rate and performance accuracy, both which were associated with greater alcohol use. Imaging findings in the problem drinking group showed that negative emotions as a drinking motive predicted attenuated right anterior insula activation during proactive avoidance. In contrast, physical pain motive predicted reduced right putamen response. These regions' activations as well as functional connectivity with the somatomotor cortex also demonstrated a negative relationship with drinking severity and positive relationship with proactive avoidance performance. Path modeling further delineated the pathways through which physical pain and negative emotions influenced the neural and behavioral measures of proactive avoidance. Objective: The objective of this study was to determine the effects of listening to nature sounds alone and virtual reality plus listening to nature sounds on pain and anxiety in hysterosalpingography., Methods: This three-arm parallel randomized controlled trial included 135 (45 in each group) women who underwent hysterosalpingography in Turkey. The virtual reality+nature sounds group viewed a nature video with virtual reality glasses and listened to nature sounds during hysterosalpingography, whereas the nature sounds group only listened to nature sounds. The control group received only routine care., Results: During hysterosalpingography, women in virtual reality+nature sounds group experienced less pain than those in control group (p=0.009). After hysterosalpingography, pain levels were lower in both virtual reality+nature sounds group and nature sounds group than in control group (p=0.000 and p=0.000, respectively), anxiety levels were lower in virtual reality+nature sounds group than in nature sounds group and control group (p=0.018 and p=0.000, respectively), and anxiety levels were lower in nature sounds group than in control group (p=0.013)., Conclusion: Virtual reality with nature content plus listening to nature sounds and only listening to nature sounds are effective in reducing pain and anxiety related to hysterosalpingography procedures in women. Compared with only listening to nature sounds, virtual reality plus listening to nature sounds further reduced hysterosalpingography-related pain and anxiety.

Objectives: Studies usually investigate a limited number or a predefined combinations of risk factors for sickness absence in employees with pain. We examined frequently occurring combinations across a wide range of work-related factors and pain perceptions., Design: Cross-sectional study., Setting: Belgian companies that are under supervision of IDEWE, an external service for prevention and protection at work., Participants: In total, 249 employees experiencing pain for at least 6 weeks were included and filled out an online survey., Outcomes: Latent profile analysis was used to differentiate profiles of work-related factors (physical demands, workload, social support and autonomy) and pain perceptions (catastrophising, fear-avoidance beliefs and pain acceptance). Subsequently, profiles were compared on sociodemographics (age, gender, level of education, work arrangement, duration of complaints, multisite pain and sickness absence in the previous year) and predictors of sickness absence (behavioural intention and perceived behavioural control)., Results: Four profiles were identified. Profile 1 (38.2%) had favourable scores and profile 4 (14.9%) unfavourable scores across all indicators. Profile 2 (33.3%) had relatively high physical demands, moderate autonomy levels and favourable scores on the other indicators. Profile 3 (13.7%) showed relatively low physical demands, moderate autonomy levels, but unfavourable scores on the other indicators. Predictors of profiles were age (OR 0.93 and 95% CI (0.89 to 0.98)), level of education (OR 0.28 and 95% CI (0.1 to 0.79)) and duration of sickness absence in the previous year (OR 2.29 and 95% CI (0.89 to 5.88)). Significant differences were observed in behavioural intention (χ 2 =8.92, p=0.030) and perceived behavioural control (χ 2 =12.37, p=0.006) across the four profiles., Conclusion: This study highlights the significance of considering the interplay between work-related factors and pain perceptions in employees. Unfavourable scores on a single work factor might not translate into maladaptive pain perceptions or subsequent sickness absence, if mitigating factors are in place. Special attention must be devoted to employees dealing with unfavourable working conditions along with maladaptive pain perceptions. Background: Sex is an important factor influencing the development and treatment of chronic pain, but the extent of its influence is still unclear. Other demographic factors as well as nonpharmacological interventions might influence pain sensitivity differently in men and women., Objective: In this study, we aimed to investigate the influence of sex and other demographic, lifestyle, behavioral, clinical, and environmental factors on pain sensitivity in the Dutch population. Different films were used to investigate how they would impact pain sensitivity and what influence sex and other variables have on the effect of this simple intervention., Methods: We performed a study consisting of 2 parts: (1) a cross-sectional research to investigate pain sensitivity differences between men and women and the influence of other demographic variables on the pain sensitivity in a Dutch cohort and (2) an internet intervention study to determine whether a short film could skew pain sensitivity., Results: All respondents filled in a web-based demographic questionnaire and were randomized into 4 groups. The control group filled in the Pain Sensitivity Questionnaire without watching a preliminary film. A cross-sectional analysis was performed in the control group (n=1746). The other 3 groups watched short films: one group watched a film with scenes of nature (n=2650), another group watched a film on laughing people (n=2735), and the last group watched a film on physically painful events (n=2708). Immediately after the film viewing, participants were directed to the Pain Sensitivity Questionnaire to measure their pain sensitivity. The Pain Sensitivity Questionnaire score was stated as a mean per question on the numeric rating scale from 0-1. The cross-sectional study revealed no significant differences between men and women but showed male-female differences in the Pain Sensitivity Questionnaire when specific background factors were present. Watching a short film had a positive impact on the pain sensitivity of the respondents who had chronic pain, with a higher effect observed in female respondents., Conclusions: Scientists performing pain research need to account for factors that can influence the outcome of their study and be aware that these factors can be sex-dependent, and pain sensitivity should be analyzed accordingly. Even relatively small interventions such as watching a film can impact pain sensitivity, especially in respondents with current chronic pain. This effect can vary as well when different background factors are present. Background: Pain is a dynamic experience that varies over time, but it remains unknown whether trajectories of pain are associated with subsequent cognitive decline. The purpose of this study was to identify distinct trajectories of pain presence and activity-limiting pain and investigate their longitudinal associations with the rate of subsequent cognitive decline in older adults., Methods: A total of 5685 participants from the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA) and 7619 participants from the Health and Retirement Study (HRS) were included. Pain presence trajectories were identified over eight years in the ELSA and 10 years in the HRS, while trajectories of activity-limiting pain were identified over 10 years in the HRS. We utilised linear mixed-effects models to investigate the long-term relationship between pain trajectories and the rate of cognitive decline across various domains, including memory, orientation, executive function and global cognition., Results: Three pain presence trajectories were identified. Moderate-increasing and high-stable groups exhibited steeper declines in global cognition than the low-stable group. Furthermore, individuals in the moderate-increasing group experienced a more rapid decline in executive function, while the high-stable group showed a faster decline in orientation function. Two trajectories of activity-limiting pain were identified, with the moderate-increasing group experiencing a faster decline in orientation function and global cognition., Conclusions: The trajectories of both pain presence and activity-limiting pain are linked to the rate of subsequent cognitive decline among older people. This study was conducted to determine the effect of using virtual reality (VR) during burn dressing on the level of fear, anxiety, and pain that children would experience. This randomized controlled trial was conducted in a pretest-posttest design. Randomization of the participants (n = 65) was performed with the block randomization method. Then, 33 children were included in the intervention and 32 children in the control group with simple sequential randomization. The study data were collected using the "Family and Child Personal Information Form," "Physiological Parameters Registration Form," "Wong-Baker Faces Pain Scale," "Children's Fear Scale," and "Children's Anxiety Meter-State." The chi-square test, t-test, Shapiro-Wilk, mean, and percentile distributions were used for the data analysis. After dressing, the physiological parameters of the children who used VR were found to be within normal limits (HR: 108.48 ± 12.43, O2: 98.39 ± 1.14) compared to the children who did not use (HR: 117.38 ± 15.25, O2: 97.81 ± 1.35) (P < .05). After the dressing, children using VR (0.85 ± 1.23) were determined to have less fear than those who did not use them (3.03 ± 1.06), and similarly, children who used VR (2.64 ± 2.73) experienced less anxiety than those who did not use them (5.84 ± 2.26). When the pain levels were evaluated, the VR group (1.79 ± 2.04) was reported to feel less pain compared to the control group (5.50 ± 2.36). The VR used by children aged 5-10 years during burn dressing has been found to affect their physiological parameters and is effective in reducing fear, anxiety, and pain levels., (© The Author(s) 2024. Identifying depression symptoms in patients with hip fractures and studying the relationship between depression and pain intensity and pain location in hip fracture patients is of great significance for disease recovery in hip fracture patients. This cohort study analyzed 5 wave data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study in 2011, 2013, 2015, 2018, and 2020, focusing on 1222 patients with hip fractures. The study utilized the CESD-10 Depression Scale to assess depressive symptoms in hip fracture patients and conducted analyses to explore the relationship between depression symptoms, pain, and pain intensity, including binary logistic regression and examination of interaction terms between pain variables and pain intensity in key body parts. Depression symptoms are strongly associated with pain intensity in hip fracture patients, particularly in key body areas. Severe pain significantly increases the risk of depressive symptoms. Moreover, absence of pain in other key body parts is linked to depressive symptoms. Multivariate analysis reveals that higher education levels, marriage, urban residence, and self-rated good health serve as protective factors against depression, while diabetes and heart disease pose significant risks for depressive symptoms in hip fracture patients. Hip fracture pain can induce discomfort and trigger depressive symptoms, showing varied trajectories among patients. Pain intensity predicts the course of depressive symptoms, emphasizing the importance of tailored pain management strategies including medication, physical therapy, and nonpharmacological interventions. Problem: The objective of this study was to investigate the impact of bubble-blowing and ball-squeezing interventions on children's levels of anxiety, fear, and pain during venipuncture procedures., Methods: This study was designed as a randomized controlled trial. Out of 108 children aged 5-10 years, 72 were allocated to the two experimental groups, while 36 were assigned to the control group. The levels of anxiety, fear, and pain experienced by the children were assessed using the "Wong-Baker FACES® Pain Rating Scale," "Child Anxiety Scale-State," and "Child Fear Scale," respectively. Intergroup comparisons were analyzed using one-way ANOVA, while intragroup comparisons were conducted using Wilks' Lambda analysis., Findings: It was observed that 50% of the children in the control group, 47.2% in the bubble-blowing group, and 47.2% in the ball-queezing group did not receive information about the painful procedure. Anxiety, fear, and pain scores of all groups were statistically similar in the initial measurement without any intervention. Children in the bubble-blowing and ball-squeezing groups experienced lower anxiety, fear, and pain during and at the end of the painful procedures., Conclusions: The study discovered that interventions involving bubble blowing and ball squeezing significantly decreased children's levels of anxiety, fear, and pain both during and after intravenous procedures. Information on procedures, alongside interactive techniques like bubble blowing and ball squeezing, helps pediatric nurses calm children, easing anxiety, fear, and pain. Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of art therapy in reducing pain and anxiety in adolescents with painful conditions treated in the ED., Methods: We conducted a prospective pilot study of patients 12-18 years old presenting with a painful condition to a tertiary-care children's hospital ED. Primary outcome was pain intensity measured using the Verbal Numerical Rating Scale (scored 0-10); a decrease of ≥ 20% was clinically significant. Anxiety was measured using the short-form six-item State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (scored 20-80: 20-40 = zero-low anxiety; 41-60 = moderate anxiety; 61-80 = high anxiety); a change from higher to lower category was clinically significant. Outcomes were measured at baseline, immediately after, and 1 h after art therapy completion. A standardized interview was conducted immediately after art therapy completion., Results: We enrolled a convenience sample of 50 patients. Mean duration of art therapy was 34.7 min. Mean baseline pain was 6.2 and decreased by 23.2% (95% CI 14.9-31.5) and 28.6% (95% CI 9.2-48), immediately after and 1 h after art therapy completion, respectively. Mean baseline anxiety was 48 (moderate) and decreased to 38 (low) and 43 (moderate) at the same time points, respectively. Forty-eight patients (96%) reported feelings of relaxation, decreased pain intensity, and/or empowerment (e.g., "Very relaxing"; "I didn't feel as much pain"; "Really showed my emotions"; "A way to explain to doctors what I'm feeling and what parts hurt")., Conclusion: Art therapy may be associated with clinically significant decreases and qualitative improvements in pain and anxiety in adolescents with painful conditions being treated in the ED. Different empathic responses are often reported in autism but remain controversial. To investigate which component of empathy is most affected by autism, we examined the affective, cognitive, and motivational components of empathy in 25 5- to 8-year-old autistic and 27 neurotypical children. Participants were presented with visual stimuli depicting people's limbs in painful or nonpainful situations while their eye movements, pupillary responses, and verbal ratings of pain intensity and empathic concern were recorded. The results indicate an emotional overarousal and reduced empathic concern to others' pain in autism. Compared with neurotypical children, autistic children displayed larger pupil dilation accompanied by attentional avoidance to others' pain. Moreover, even though autistic children rated others in painful situations as painful, they felt less sorry than neurotypical children. Interestingly, autistic children felt more sorry in nonpainful situations compared with neurotypical children. Background: Patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) face a wide range of symptoms, including physical disability, imbalance, motor disorders, and acute and chronic pain. The psychosocial consequences of these symptoms may limit social well-being and quality of life in these patients., Purpose: The aim of the study was to assess self-perceived social isolation among patients with MS and its relationship with pain intensity and disability status., Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 200 patients with MS referred to neurology wards and clinics, the MS Association, and rehabilitation centers. Data collection tools used included a demographic information form, Numeric Pain Rating Scale, Expanded Disability Status Scale, and Social Isolation Questionnaire., Results: The mean scores of 4.66 ( SD = 1.15) for disability and 4.18 ( SD = 2.22) for pain intensity both indicated moderate levels of both. Of the sample, 21.5% (43 patients) reported no pain, 22.5% ( n = 45) reported mild pain, 35% ( n = 70) reported moderate pain, and 21% ( n = 42) reported intense pain. The average social isolation score was 63.52 ( SD = 3.32), which is higher than the theoretical average. Of the sample, 44.5% reported low social isolation, whereas 55.5% indicated high social isolation. Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is a genetic disorder marked by the development of cysts in the kidneys and other organs, leading to diverse clinical manifestations, including kidney failure. The psychological burden of ADPKD is substantial, with significant contributors including pain, daily life disruptions, depression, anxiety, and the guilt associated with transmitting ADPKD to offspring. This review details the psychological impacts of ADPKD on patients, addressing how they navigate physical and emotional challenges, including pain management, genetic guilt, mood disorders, and disease acceptance. This review also underscores the need for comprehensive research into the psychological aspects of ADPKD, focusing on the prevalence and contributing factors of emotional distress and identifying effective strategies for managing anxiety and depression. Pain is essential for survival, but individual responses to painful stimuli vary, representing a complex interplay between sensory, cognitive, and affective factors. Individual differences in personality traits and in pain perception covary but it is unclear which traits play the most significant role in understanding the pain experience and whether this depends on pain modality. A systematic search identified 1534 records (CINAHL, MEDLINE, PsycInfo, PubMed and Web of Science), of which 22 were retained and included in a systematic review. Only studies from the pressure pain domain (n=6) could be compared in a formal meta-analysis to evaluate the relationship between Big Five traits and experimental pain. Pressure pain tolerance correlated positively with Extraversion and negatively with Neuroticism with a trivial effect size (<0.1). While these findings suggest personality might be only weakly related to pain in healthy individuals, we emphasize the need to consider standardization, biases, and adequate sample sizes in future research, as well as additional factors that might affect experimental pain sensitivity., (Copyright © 2024 The Authors. Over 50 % of children and youth with cerebral palsy (CP) experience mental health challenges, with anxiety and depression most common. Youth with CP also experience several physiological symptoms such as fatigue, pain, sedentary lifestyle, and sleep disturbances that impact their daily living; however, little is known about the impact of these symptoms on mental health outcomes in these youth. This study addressed this gap and examined the individual and cumulative impacts of physiological symptoms on anxiety and depression symptoms in youth with CP. Forty youth with CP aged 8 to 18 years, and their caregiver, participated in this cross-sectional observational study. Pain, fatigue, anxiety, and depressive symptoms were measured using caregiver- and self-reported questionnaires and participants wore accelerometers for seven consecutive days, providing non-invasive physical activity and sleep pattern data. Youth with CP experienced substantial physiological symptoms and elevated anxiety and depression symptoms. Linear regression models determined that all physiological factors were predictive of caregiver-reported youth anxiety (R 2 = 0.23) and youth depressive symptoms (R 2 = 0.48). Fatigue, pain severity, sleep efficiency, and physical activity outcomes individually and cumulatively contributed to caregiver-reported youth anxiety and depression symptoms. Abstract: Despite being widely assumed, the worsening impact of unpredictability on pain perception remains unclear because of conflicting empirical evidence, and a lack of systematic integration of past research findings. To fill this gap, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis focusing on the effect of unpredictability on pain perception. We also conducted meta-regression analyses to examine the moderating effect of several moderators associated with pain and unpredictability: stimulus duration, calibrated stimulus pain intensity, pain intensity expectation, controllability, anticipation delay, state and trait negative affectivity, sex/gender and age of the participants, type of unpredictability (intensity, onset, duration, location), and method of pain induction (thermal, electrical, mechanical pressure, mechanical distention). We included 73 experimental studies with adult volunteers manipulating the (un)predictability of painful stimuli and measuring perceived pain intensity and pain unpleasantness in predictable and unpredictable contexts. Because there are insufficient studies with patients, we focused on healthy volunteers. Our results did not reveal any effect of unpredictability on pain perception. However, several significant moderators were found, ie, targeted stimulus pain intensity, expected pain intensity, and state negative affectivity. Trait negative affectivity and uncontrollability showed no significant effect, presumably because of the low number of included studies. Purpose: This study was carried out to determine the effect of a breathing exercise during peripheral venous cathetererization on pain, anxiety, and patient satisfaction., Design: Randomized Controlled Study., Methods: The study was completed with a total of 130 individuals. Individuals in the intervention group performed diaphragmatic breathing exercises during catheterization., Findings: The mean pain, anxiety, and satisfaction scores of the individuals in the intervention group were 0.29 ± 0.70, 3.18 ± 2.29, and 7.66 ± 2.20, respectively. In the control group, the mean pain score was 1.30 ± 1.47, the anxiety score was 4.35 ± 2.42, and the satisfaction score was 4.87 ± 1.63. The pain and anxiety levels of the individuals in the intervention group were lower and the satisfaction scores were higher than the control group., Conclusions: Breathing exercises reduced individuals' pain and anxiety levels and increased individuals' satisfaction. Abstract: The pressing need for safer, more efficacious analgesics is felt worldwide. Preclinical tests in animal models of painful conditions represent one of the earliest checkpoints novel therapeutics must negotiate before consideration for human use. Traditionally, the pain status of laboratory animals has been inferred from evoked nociceptive assays that measure their responses to noxious stimuli. The disconnect between how pain is tested in laboratory animals and how it is experienced by humans may in part explain the shortcomings of current pain medications and highlights a need for refinement. Here, we survey human patients with chronic pain who assert that everyday aspects of life, such as cleaning and leaving the house, are affected by their ongoing level of pain. Accordingly, we test the impact of painful conditions on an ethological behavior of mice, digging. Stable digging behavior was observed over time in naive mice of both sexes. By contrast, deficits in digging were seen after acute knee inflammation. The analgesia conferred by meloxicam and gabapentin was compared in the monosodium iodoacetate knee osteoarthritis model, with meloxicam more effectively ameliorating digging deficits, in line with human patients finding meloxicam more effective. Finally, in a visceral pain model, the decrease in digging behavior correlated with the extent of disease. Ultimately, we make a case for adopting ethological assays, such as digging, in studies of pain in laboratory animals, which we believe to be more representative of the human experience of pain and thus valuable in assessing clinical potential of novel analgesics in animals., (Copyright © 2024 The Author(s). Purpose: The present study aims to investigate the association between emotion regulation difficulties and pain perception during the immediate postpartum period., Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed in women during the immediate postpartum period. Women completed the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS) questionnaire to measure difficulties in emotion regulation. A second analysis was conducted for the six subdomains of the DERS questionnaire. The visual analog scale (VAS) was used to measure pain intensity. The association between DERS scores and VAS score was assessed. Multivariable logistic regression models were constructed to control for potential confounders., Results: A total of 150 women were included in the final analysis, of whom 112 (74.6%) delivered vaginally and 38 (25.4%) had a cesarean delivery. Higher DERS scores, indicating more difficulties in emotion regulation, were significantly associated with higher VAS scores regardless of mode of delivery. Likewise, higher emotion regulation scores in 5 of 6 subdomains were associated with higher VAS scores (p < 0.001). Using multivariate logistic regression models higher DERS scores were independently associated with higher VAS scores., Conclusion: Difficulties in emotion regulation are associated with higher pain perception during the immediate postpartum period. Interventions designed to improve emotion regulation may improve maternal well-being in the immediate postpartum period and possibly reduce use of pain medication., (© 2023. Purpose: Corticosteroids, platelet-rich plasma, and hyaluronic acid injections to either the subacromial space (SAS) or the glenohumeral joint (GHJ) of the shoulder are commonly used for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes in outpatient settings. The first aim of this study was to determine whether the anticipated pain level differed significantly from the actual pain level experienced by patients who underwent shoulder injections. The second aim was to determine whether there was a significant difference in these pain levels between SAS and GHJ injections. The secondary goal was to investigate the correlation between patients' demographic data, anxiety characteristics, and pain scores., Design: Prospective clinical study., Methods: This study involved patients who completed a three-part questionnaire prior as well as following an injections to the GHJ\SAS., Findings: Sixty-three patients (28 males; 35 females), mean age of 54.28 years (standard deviation 13.95, range 25 to 84) met the inclusion criteria. There was a significant difference between the anticipated and the experienced pain (visual analog score 6.03 vs 3.17, P < .001). Experienced pain of the GHJ injections (n = 34) was rated as being greater than that of the SAS injections (n = 29) with borderline significance (visual analog scale 3.79 vs 2.36; P = .05). Forty-five patients (71.42%) reported a decrease in at least one pain category between anticipated and experienced pain compared to an increase reported by two patients (3.17%)., Conclusions: Injections to the GHJ and SAS were shown to be significantly less painful than anticipated by the patients. GHJ injections were perceived as more painful than SAS injections.
