Abstract Background Pain experienced by women in the perinatal period constitutes a complex and multifaceted phenomenon. The aim of the study was to assess conditions of pain locus of control and pain reduction in post-cesarean section parturients. Materials and methods A cross-sectional quantitative study with convenience sampling was performed among 175 hospitalized post-cesarean section women in hospitals in Eastern Poland in accordance with the Strengthening the Reporting of Observational studies in Epidemiology (STROBE) statement. A self-design questionnaire regarding general information and obstetrics/gynaecology medical interview, The Pain Coping Strategies Questionnaire (CSQ) and The Beliefs about Pain Control Questionnaire (BPCQ) were used. The inclusion criteria were as follows (1) age of ⩾18 years old; (2) cesarean section (CS); (3) period from the 13th hour to the end of the 72nd hour after the procedure; and (4) informed consent. The data was analyzed with IBM SPSS Statistics. Results Internal locus of control (M = 14.02) was provided the highest value by the parturients and followed by chance events (M = 12.61) and doctors’ power (M = 12.18). Dominant coping with pain strategies in the post-cesarean parturients were coping self-statements (M = 19.06), praying or hoping (M = 18.86). The parturients assessed their pain coping (M = 3.31) strategies along with pain reduction (M = 3.35) at the moderate level. Catastrophizing and hoping were related to lower competences of coping with pain (B = − 0.033, SE = 0.012, β = − 0.206, T = -2.861). Conclusions: The study allowed for identification and better comprehension of factors conditioning pain control and pain reduction in parturients after the cesarean section. Furthermore, a stronger belief that pain can be dealt with is found in the parturients characterized by cognitive pain coping strategies and internal pain locus of control. There is a pressing need to identify non-opioid, evidence-based treatments to address the high prevalence of chronic pain in licensed opioid treatment programs (OTP). Yoga is an effective pain coping strategy but is not widely used by OTP patients. Few studies have examined underlying factors related to poor yoga utilization in this population. Seventy-one participants with and without chronic pain enrolled in a hospital-based OTP completed an acceptability survey assessing pain, current pain coping strategies, prior yoga experience, willingness to try yoga, and beliefs about yoga. Participants with and without chronic pain were compared, as were participants with and without prior yoga experience. The relationships between primary study variables in the chronic pain group were also explored. Participants reported using over-the-counter medications, meditation, stretching, and exercise to manage chronic pain, but yoga was not commonly used. Participants with prior yoga experience reported higher willingness to try yoga and more favorable beliefs about yoga than participants without prior yoga experience. There were no significant differences in willingness to try yoga between participants with and without chronic pain. Among participants with chronic pain, there was a positive association between total number of pain coping strategies used and willingness to try yoga. This study adds to the existing literature on the implementation of yoga programs into OTPs by demonstrating the acceptability of yoga in patients with opioid use disorder, including those experiencing chronic pain, and encourages additional research exploring implementation.

The aim of the present study has been to analyze the relationship between the use of not previously trained, diverse acute pain coping strategies and levels of pain intensity and pain tolerance in a group of healthy participants. Previous research has analyzed the usefulness of the training of these strategies after several training sessions, but adequate patient training requires a great deal of time. Two hundred and forty healthy people participated in the study. Pain coping strategies was evaluated with a version of CSQ‐S. Subsequently, the participants completed a cold pressor test and tolerance test. After that, subjects filled in the adaptation of the CSQ‐S about the strategies which they had employed throughout the test. Correlation analyses showed a positive relationship between pain intensity and catastrophizing, distractor behaviors, hoping and ignoring the pain. Pain tolerance correlated with self‐instructions, ignoring the pain, reinterpreting the pain, catastrophizing and faith and praying. Regression analyses showed that catastrophizing was found to be the strategy that most predicts the variance of pain intensity, and catastrophizing (negative) and ignoring the pain (positive) and praying (negative) were the most predictive ones for pain tolerance. This is the first laboratory study that identifies the more useful pain coping strategies which can be used by patients without previous training in an acute pain context. The results of this study could be useful in the development of protocols for nurses and other health professionals, especially for situations where potentially painful techniques are to be applied to patients. Objective: This study aimed to examine the mediating role of early maladaptive schemas on the relationship between illness-related perceptions and pain coping strategies among adolescents diagnosed with migraine. Material and methods: A total of 134 adolescents (aged 12-18 years) diagnosed with migraine with and without aura participated in the study. The Illness Perception Questionnaire, the Pain Coping Questionnaire, and the Early Maladaptive Schema Questionnaires Set for Children and Adolescents were used. Results: The intensity of using desperate ways of coping with pain was higher among adolescents who perceive migraine as a chronic disease (β = 0.199, p < 0.05) even if they have episodic attacks and who have higher levels of coherency in understanding the illness (β = 0.256, p < 0.01). First, full mediations of over-vigilance/inhibition and impaired autonomy/performance schema domains on these relations were observed. Second, the increases in negative cognitive (β = 0.199, p < 0.05) and emotional (β = 0.280, p < 0.01) representations related to the consequences of the illness lead to an increase in the uncontrolled and frequent use of analgesic drugs where the partialmediating role of over-vigilance/inhibition schema domain on this correlation is observed. The perceptions about the negative as well as serious consequences of migraine are related to both the self-active behaviors (β = 0.181, p < 0.05) and the conscious cognitive attempts (β = 0.207, p < 0.05) as effective coping strategies, which is an unexpected finding. The disconnection/rejection schema domain had a full mediation role on both relations. Background and Aim:Neuropathic diseases are neurodegenerative conditions and a wide and difficult group of peripheral nerve diseases in humans. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effectiveness of acceptance and commitment therapy on pain coping strategies and pain self- efficacy in chronic neuropathic pain patients Materials and Methods: This study was a semi-experimental study with a control group and included pre-test, post-test and follow-up. The statistical population, included all chronic neuropathic pain patients referring to Rohani Hospital and personal office of our neurologist in Babol City in 2022. 30 patients were selected by using purposive sampling method and randomly divided into two experimental (15 persons) and control (15 persons) groups. Both groups filled out the pain coping strategies and pain self- efficacy questionnaire in the pre-test stage. Acceptance and commitment therapy was performed for the experimental group for 8 sessions (one 120 minute session/week), while control group did not receive any treatment. After completion of the treatment period for both groups, post-test and 2 months after the post-test, follow-up test were performed. Using SPSS-18 software, data were analyzed by repeated measures analysis of variance. Objective Chronic low back pain (CLBP) has a significant negative impact on daily functioning, particularly for those with challenges coping adaptively with ongoing pain. However, the dynamics of pain coping in daily life remain understudied. Therefore, we examined the extent to which pain intensity interferes with daily activities, and assessed whether pain coping strategies (as assessed using daily diaries) moderated this link. Method We analyzed diary data from a sample of 84 participants with CLBP who completed daily diaries for up to 30 days rating pain intensity, pain interference with daily activities, and their use of pain coping strategies, including pain rumination (i.e. repetitive thinking about the pain and its causes), reappraisal (i.e. evaluating one's pain less negatively or more positively), and distraction (i.e. diverting attention from the pain). We hypothesized that these coping strategies would moderate the associations between pain and pain interference with daily activities, although in different directions. Results Results suggest that pain rumination strengthens the association between pain intensity and pain interference both on the person and day level, while pain reappraisal and distraction weaken this association, at the day and person levels, respectively. Conclusion Our findings suggest that those who are more preoccupied with their pain and those who are less likely to reappraise their pain have more pain interference with daily activities. These findings build on prior work on pain coping by using daily diaries and highlight two pain coping strategies that have particular relevance for reducing the impact of CLBP in daily life. Aim and background: The lifestyle of patients is affected by mood/anxiety symptoms and emotional schemas and coping strategies with pain, so the present study aims to provide a conceptual model of the lifestyle of patients with chronic back pain with regard to the role of mood/anxiety symptoms and Emotional schemas and pain coping strategies. Material and Methods: The descriptive research method was correlation type. The statistical population consisted of all women and men (25 to 55) years old with chronic back pain who referred to Razi Hospital and hospitals in Tarbat Heydarieh city in 1400-1401, which were 400 people, considering the entry criteria. The tools has been used were: questionnaire of emotional symptoms (mood/anxiety), short form of emotional schemas, strategies for coping with pain Rosenstein and Kaif (1983) and life style during quarantine by Ali Akbari Dehkordi. The data was analyzed by structural equation modeling method. Results: The fitted model showed that the indirect effect of mood/anxiety symptoms on lifestyle through dealing with pain (β=-0.165 and P<0.05) are significant at the 0.05 level. The results of the study supported the mediation of pain coping strategies in the relationship between mood/anxiety symptoms and emotional schemas with patients' lifestyle. Conclusion: Developing therapeutic interventions to reduce emotional schemas and improve pain coping strategies is useful in improving and improving the lifestyle of chronic pain sufferers. Background: In order to tailor more effective interventions and minimize the burden of chronic pain, it is critical to identify the interaction and contribution of social and psychological factors in pain. One of the important psychological factors in pain management is related to the choice of pain coping strategies in chronic pain patients. Social resources, including family caregivers' pain attitudes-beliefs, can influence pain coping strategies in chronic pain patients. Moreover, one key factor that may intervene in the relationship between caregivers' pain attitudes-beliefs and the patients' coping strategies is the emotion regulation strategies. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the mediating role of emotion regulation strategies of chronic pain patients and their family caregivers on the association between caregivers' pain attitudes-beliefs and pain coping strategies of chronic pain patients. Methods: We recruited 200 chronic musculoskeletal pain patients and their family caregivers. Chronic pain patients responded to measures of pain coping and emotion regulation strategies while family caregivers completed questionnaires related to their attitude toward pain and emotion regulation of themselves. Cancer has multiple consequences that affect the quality of life of patients. Objective: to identify pain coping strategies associated with quality of life in women diagnosed with cancer. Method: It was a non-experimental, cross-sectional study. Sixty-five women from 30 to 65 years old with a cancer diagnosis participated and answered the Coping with Chronic Pain Questionnaire (CPQ) and the Health Survey SF-36. Results: The most frequent coping strategies were distractions, self-assertion and religion, while the dimensions of quality of life with the better improvement were emotional role and mental health. When analyzing the relationship according to the life cycle of the participants, it was found that women aged 30 - 45 and 54 - 65 years old used more maladaptive coping strategies, which do not necessarily have a negative impact on quality of life. Conclusions: the existence of different forms of coping is proposed depending on the age of the patients, which may have an adaptive or maladaptive role depending on the quality of life. Abstract Background Pain coping strategies are important in the chronicity of low back pain and the associated disability. However, their exact influence is unknown in many African contexts such as rural Nigeria due to lack of outcome instruments with which to measure them. This study aimed to cross-culturally adapt and psychometrically test the Coping Strategies Questionnaire (CSQ) in Igbo populations in Nigeria. Methods The CSQ was forward and back translated by clinical and non-clinical translators; evaluated by an expert review committee. The translated measure was piloted amongst twelve rural Nigerian dwellers with chronic low back pain (CLBP) using the think-aloud cognitive interviewing style. Internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha), test–retest reliability (intra-class correlation coefficient—ICC and Bland–Altman plot), and minimal detectable change were examined amongst 50 people with CLBP in rural and urban Nigerian populations. Construct validity was determined by assessing the correlations between the adapted CSQ and measures of disability, pain intensity, fear avoidance beliefs, and illness perceptions using Spearman’s correlation analyses with 200 adults with CLBP in rural Nigeria. Exploratory factor analyses using Kaiser criterion (eigenvalue) and parallel analysis as methods for determining dimensionality were conducted with the same sample. Results Fourteen out of 42 items were routinely adopted in this population including all items of catastrophising subscale, and all but one item of praying and hoping subscale. Catastrophising and praying and hoping subscales had the highest Cronbach’s alpha. All subscales had high ICCs with Bland–Altman plots that showed good agreement. All coping strategies were positively correlated with self-reported disability and pain intensity with catastrophising subscale having the highest values. Seven-factor and three-factor structures were produced with the Kaiser criterion and parallel analysis, with different items from the original CSQ, except for catastrophising. Conclusions Catastrophising and praying and hoping may be the relevant coping strategies in this population. More culturally relevant measures of pain coping strategies that include adaptive coping strategies may need to be developed for African contexts such as rural Nigeria.

Background: As a universal problem, cancer is the third cause of death in Iran. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) on anxiety, perceived stress and pain coping management strategies for patients with leukemia. Materials and Methods: The present study is an applied and quasi-experimental project of pre-test-post-experimental type with control group. The statistical population of this study included all patients with leukemia who were hospitalized in Seyed Al-Shohada Hospital in Isfahan between April and June 2019 and their disease was confirmed. A sample of 30 people from the community who were selected using the available sampling method and using simple randomization method in two groups of acceptance and commitment treatment (n=15) and control group (n=15) were appointed. Data were obtained using the perceived stress scale, Beckchr('39')s anxiety scale and pain response strategies questionnaire. In order to deduce the inferential analysis, the one-dimensional and multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA) was used, which was performed with SPSS.22 software. Background: Coping strategies affect patients’ perceptions of pain severity, their ability to tolerate pain, duration of daily activities, and emotions. This study aims to determine the relationship between pain coping and unpleasant emotions, and religious coping in cancer patients. Methods: This was a cross-sectional survey study. Sampling was conducted from June to December 2016. During that period, 363 cancer patients referred to Omid Hospital in Mashhad city, Iran and 22 Bahman Hospital in Neyshabur city, Iran. Data collection tools included a demographic questionnaire, religious coping scale, pain severity scale, Coping Strategies Questionnaire, and Depression Anxiety Stress Scale. The dataset was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics that included chi-square and one-way ANOVA with SPSS v.16 software. Results: The majority of cancer patients (231; 63.6%) used the strategy of praying and hoping as their coping mechanisms. There was a significant difference between religious coping and pain coping strategies (P=0.02). Patients with mild depression most frequently used the praying and hoping strategy, whereas those with moderate depression more frequently used the catastrophic strategy (P>0.05). Conclusion: Designing and performing educational programs for coping with pain can be an effective solution for patients to improve their pain management, as well as control and cope with their illness. These programs would help increase patient quality of life and disease self-management, as well as decreasing psychological and communication problems.

Abstract Background This naturalistic study assesses the effectiveness of inpatient multidisciplinary treatment of children and adolescents with somatic symptom disorders (SSD) and investigates the role of pain coping strategies and psychiatric comorbidity (anxiety, depression). Methods Sixty children and adolescents (mean age 14.4 years) with SSD who underwent inpatient multidisciplinary treatment were assessed regarding their school attendance, levels of discomfort, coping strategies and psychiatric comorbidity (depression, anxiety) at pretreatment, discharge and 6 months following treatment. Results At discharge, the children and adolescents reported improvements in their level of discomfort, psychiatric comorbidities (anxiety, depression) and pain coping strategies, with medium to large effect sizes. Results: The mean incidence, severity, and duration of migraine headaches improved after the intervention in the experimental group (P<0.05) Moreover, with the exception of the re-evaluation strategy and social support, the mean frequency of all coping strategies increased in experimental group after intervention (P<0.05). Also, mean score of knowledge and pain self - efficacy was increased in experimental group after intervention (P<0.001). The rank of the stage of readiness among patients in the experimental group increased after intervention and patients in the experimental group reported active stages of readiness (P<0.01). Conclusion: Research findings emphasize the effectiveness of stage of change-based education to improve the use of pain coping management strategies and also, reduction of the frequency, severity, and duration of migraine headaches. Aims: To describe patients' daily coping with the pain of chronic temporomandibular disorders (TMD), the conservative treatment received, and the self-care strategies used, and to examine the relationships between these strategies and daily pain intensity, activity interference, and jaw use limitations. Methods: TMD clinic patients (n = 137, 88% women) completed electronic diary measures of pain, interference, jaw use limitations, and use of 20 strategies 3 times daily for 2 weeks. Results: Reliability and validity were demonstrated for 4 scales of related coping items: cognitive coping, relaxation, activity reduction, and emotional support. Average scores were higher on the relaxation and activity reduction scales than on the cognitive coping and emotional support scales. Among the coping items not included in the scales, "did something to try to reduce pain" (direct action) was endorsed most frequently (reported in a median of 74% of interviews). Heat, cold, and seeking spiritual support were used least (⩽5%). At times of increased pain, patients were more likely to use almost all types of strategies. Pain intensity was associated strongly with concurrent activity interference and jaw use limitations. When the design controlled for pain intensity, activity reduction and seeking emotional support were associated positively within-subjects with interference and jaw use limitations. Conclusion: TMD clinic patients use a variety of treatment, self-care, and coping strategies to contend with daily pain. Inquiring about a broad range of strategies might help clinicians better understand how individual patients approach pain management. Senior citizens are at an increased risk of developing chronic conditions, which in turn increase discomfort associated with physiological processes of aging. Sensations of pain have a particular influence on the mentioned discomfort, and pain is prevalent among older people. Therefore, from the perspective of an elderly person and senior care, it is crucial to identify determinants of effective coping with chronic pain. Objectives: The aim of the research was to assess the relationship between a sense of coherence (SOC) and pain-coping strategies in chronically ill seniors. A total number of 188 individuals were included in the study, of whom 117 were female subjects and 71 were male subjects, with a mean age of 68.38 (standard deviation [SD] =6.35) years in the studied group. Subjects were sampled based on a diagnosis of a chronic medical illness with chronic pain as one of the major symptoms. Methods: The Polish adaptation of the Orientation to Life Questionnaire (SOC-29) to assess an SOC, the Coping Strategies Questionnaire (CSQ) to assess pain-coping strategies, and the visual analog scale (VAS) to assess pain intensity were used in the study. Results and conclusion: The mean score of respondents’ SOC was 133.44 (SD =24.35). Among most common pain-coping strategies used by the respondents were prayer and hope, and the declaration of coping with pain while redefining pain was the least often used coping strategy in the studied group. Individuals with stronger SOC were less prone to catastrophizing and more often declared that they were coping with and could control and reduce pain. Introduction: Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is a treatment method based on evidence that emphasis on inefficient thoughts correction and maladaptive behavioral change. The objective was to investigate the effectiveness of CBT on perception and pain intensity in patients with chronic neuropathic pain. Materials and Methods: This research of quasi-experimental was performed among 30 chronic neuropathic patients who referred to Rohani hospital of Babol (Iran) in two groups of 15 based on pretest- posttest design. The CBT was performed for the experimental group in 10 sessions, each week 1 session of 120 minutes. Participants were re-evaluated 45 days after the sessions, and pain coping strategies was evaluated according to diverting attention, reinterpretation of pain, catastrophizing, ignore of pain, prayer-hope, self-statement, increasing pain behaviour subscales and pain self-efficacy was also evaluated. Relatively, coping strategies questionnaire (Rosenstiel and Keefe) and pain self-efficacy questionnaire (Nicholas) were used in pretest, posttest and follow up in both experimental and control groups. Results: This study showed that there was a significant difference between the subscales of pain coping strategies in the experimental and control groups in diverting attention (P<0.001), reinterpretation of pain (P<0.001), ignore of pain (P=0.02), self-statement (P=0.04), increasing of pain behaviour (P<0.001) and self-efficacy (P=0.004), but there was not a significant difference between the subscales of pain coping strategies in catastrophizing (P>0.05) and prayer-hope (P>0.05). Conclusion: The present study showed the CBT could be considered as an effective intervention on pain coping strategies and pain self-efficacy in patients with chronic neuropathic pain. This study explores the association between the values of dominant religions in Vietnam and the communication about pain coping strategies employed by Vietnamese women who have cancer. Data was collected by means of in-depth interviews with twenty-six Vietnamese female cancer patients. Content analysis was then utilised to describe and interpret the women's pain talks. Participants proposed six religion-related pain coping strategies, including accepting pain, bearing pain on one's own, trying to change karma, being positive about pain, managing to forget pain and sharing pain when it becomes unbearable. The findings reflected that the religious values of Confucianism and Buddhism are associated with the patients' communication about the strategies they employed to cope with their pain. Moreover, the language of communicating pain coping could be mapped onto the categories of passive language and active language, within the religion framework. Background: Coping strategies affect patients' perceptions of pain severity, their ability to tolerate pain, duration of daily activities, and emotions. This study aims to determine the relationship between pain coping and unpleasant emotions, and religious coping in cancer patients. Methods: This was a cross-sectional survey study. Sampling was conducted from June to December 2016. During that period, 363 cancer patients referred to Omid Hospital in Mashhad city, Iran and 22 Bahman Hospital in Neyshabur city, Iran. Data collection tools included a demographic questionnaire, religious coping scale, pain severity scale, Coping Strategies Questionnaire, and Depression Anxiety Stress Scale. The dataset was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics that included chi-square and one-way ANOVA with SPSS v.16 software. Results: The majority of cancer patients (231; 63.6%) used the strategy of praying and hoping as their coping mechanisms. There was a significant difference between religious coping and pain coping strategies (P=0.02). Patients with mild depression most frequently used the praying and hoping strategy, whereas those with moderate depression more frequently used the catastrophic strategy (P>0.05). Conclusion: Designing and performing educational programs for coping with pain can be an effective solution for patients to improve their pain management, as well as control and cope with their illness. To evaluate the pain coping strategies of patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) who experience healthcare injustice from either physicians or nurses during medical visits for pain management. It is unknown how patients' coping with pain relates to their experiences of healthcare injustice from physicians or nurses. This descriptive comparative study included adult outpatients with SCD who completed the PAIN ReportIt, Healthcare Justice Questionnaire, and Coping Strategies Questionnaire-SCD. Data were analyzed using independent t tests. Frequent coping strategies of patients who experienced healthcare justice from physicians were praying-hoping and from nurses were praying-hoping, calming self-statements, diverting attention, and increasing behavioral activity. In contrast, frequent coping strategies of patients who experienced healthcare injustice from physicians were catastrophizing and isolation and from nurses were isolation. Patients who experienced healthcare justice used different sets of pain coping strategies than those who experienced healthcare injustice during medical visits for pain management. Objectives: According to the biopsychosocial model of pain, it is a multidimensional phenomenon, which comprises physiological (sensation-related factors), psychological (affective) and social (socio-economic status, social support) factors. Researchers have mainly focused on phenomena increasing the pain sensation; very few studies have examined psychological factors preventing pain. The aim of the research is to assess chronic pain intensity as determined by level of optimism, and to identify pain coping strategies in women with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Material and methods : A survey was carried out among 54 women during a 7-day period of hospitalisation. The following questionnaires were used: LOT-R (optimism; Scheier, Carver and Bridges), the Coping Strategies Questionnaire (CSQ; Rosenstiel and Keefe) and the 10-point visual-analogue pain scale (VAS). Results: The research findings indicate the significance of optimism in the experience of chronic pain, and in the pain coping strategies. Optimists felt a significantly lower level of pain than pessimists. Patients with positive outcome expectancies (optimists) experienced less pain thanks to replacing catastrophizing (negative concentration on pain) with an increased activity level. Regardless of personality traits, active coping strategies (e.g. ignoring pain sensations, coping self-statements – appraising pain as a challenge, a belief in one’s ability to manage pain) resulted in a decrease in pain, whilst catastrophizing contributed to its intensification. The most common coping strategies included praying and hoping. Employment was an important demographic variable: the unemployed experienced less pain than those who worked. Conclusions : The research results indicate that optimism and pain coping strategies should be taken into account in clinical practice. Particular attention should be given to those who have negative outcome expectations, which in turn determine strong chronic pain regardless of coping strategies. Intensification of positive outcome expectations and seeking benefits in the RA experience could therefore constitute effective techniques in the clinical therapy process.

Introduction: The purpose of our research is to evaluate the impact of basic hope of cancer patients with relapse of disease on their self-efficacy of their control of pain and coping with it. Material and methods: Two groups of patients in palliative chemotherapy (50 women and 50 men) participated in the study. They filled 4 quantitative short questionnaires: BHI-12 (basic hope), GASES (self-efficacy), BOCA (control of pain), CSU (pain coping strategies). Results: Basic hope of patients with relapse of cancer strong and positively correlates with their self-efficacy, particularly in men's group. The analysis of regression of basic hope and self-efficacy demonstrate significant impact on the dependant variables - control of pain and pain coping strategies of examined cancer patients. Conclusions: The patients with relapse of cancer do not lose their high level of basic hope and self-efficacy. These psychological resources make it possible for them to control own pain, to cooperate with medical staffs and to use flexibly different strategies of coping with own pain, but without positive reappraisal of pain. Introduction: Labour pain, though physiological, is an impulse producing stress reactions and adverse physical, mental and emotional sequelae in the body. Knowing the factors influencing the intensity of pain feeling, activities aimed at easing the pain can be applied. There is a great variety of strategies for coping with pain during labour. Parents can choose between pharmacological and natural methods, which are presently growing in popularity. Parents can ease the pain by means of different strategies of pain coping. Purpose: To analyse different strategies for pain coping used in labour. Materials and methods: The study was carried out in the Department of Gynaecology and Obstetrics of the J. Sniadecki District Hospital in Bialystok with a group of 164 patients during labour, using the questionnaire of pain coping strategies-CSQ, and visual analogue scale-VAS, which evaluates the intensity of pain. Results: In the group of patients examined, the most frequently used strategies of pain coping were declaration of coping and prayer/hope. These methods caused statistically significant influence on the decrease of the intensity of pain felt during labour stages I and II. The efficiency of the level of pain control and the possibilities for its reduction in labour were reported as average. Conclusions: Our results give grounds to assume that psychological treatment can be helpful during labour. The conscious application of pain coping strategies can significantly improve patients' states of mind during labour, change patients' attitudes towards labour and induce co-responsibility for labour progression. Objective: Evaluations of another's pain can have important implications in medical, employment, and social settings. Influenced by the Social Communication Model of Pain, this vignette-based study investigated the potential influence of characteristics of the person being evaluated (viz., the coping strategy used by an individual with chronic pain depicted in a vignette) and characteristics of those making evaluations (viz., self-reported attachment anxiety and avoidance of the study participants). The main hypothesis was that participants higher in attachment avoidance would be more critical in their evaluations than those lower in attachment avoidance. Method: Undergraduate students (/V = 267) read 1 of 2 vignettes about an individual experiencing chronic pain, provided ratings of this individual, and completed a measure of adult attachment. The vignettes varied in terms of the pain-related coping strategy (catastrophizing vs. distraction) described. Results: Similar to past research, the catastrophizing vignette received more negative ratings than the distraction vignette (e.g., greater disability level), and female participants provided more positive ratings than male participants (e.g.. greater deservingness of support). While the attachment variables were unrelated to some dependent variables, consistent with the main hypothesis, attachment avoidance was associated with lower ratings of perceived deservingness of support and desirability as a friend. Conclusions: The current findings suggest that chronic pain patients' coping styles influence evaluations made about them, and that evaluators' gender and attachment characteristics also have important effects on such evaluations. Abstract: Researchers have shown that coping style is related to pain and adjustment in people with chronic illness. This study was the first to examine how coping style related to pain, pain coping strategies, and depression in lung cancer outpatients. We conducted a comparative, secondary data analysis of 107 lung cancer patients (73% male, mean age 61.4±10.43 years, 88% Caucasian). As in prior studies, we classified patients into four coping style groups based on Marlowe–Crowne Social Desirability Scale and trait anxiety scores. The coping style groups were low-anxious (n =25); high-anxious (n =31); defensive high-anxious (n =21); and repressive (n =30). Compared to other coping style groups, the repressive group reported statistically significant lower mean scores for pain quality, pain catastrophizing, and depression. Assessing coping style by measuring personal characteristics such as social desirability and trait anxiety may help clinicians to identify vulnerable individuals with lung cancer who may be candidates for early and timely intervention efforts to enhance adjustment to pain. Abstract: During childbirth, in addition to or in place of analgesia, women manage pain using a range of coping strategies. Antenatal education provides an opportunity prior to birth to help women to prepare for an often painful event. However, this is usually carried out with little reference to the literature regarding psychological factors which influence the experience of pain. This review seeks to consider how recent developments in psychological knowledge could enhance care. Areas identified include range of coping strategies and factors influencing their efficacy and implementation. This draws on both the literature on management of acute pain in other scenarios and the limited literature related to childbirth related pain. The following recommendations for systematic evaluation in the context of antenatal education are made: (i) Increase the range of coping strategies currently utilized to include cognitive based strategies. (ii) Help women to identify and understand the nature of their own coping styles and preferences, including any unhelpful patterns of pain catastrophizing. (iii) Help women to develop their own unique set of coping strategies for labor. (iv) Strengthen feelings of coping self-efficacy by practice in class and reinforcement by the class teacher. (v) Develop implementation intentions which account for the changing context of childbirth and (vi) Actively develop prompting and reinforcement of use of identified coping strategies by birth partners. The article presents a study, which examines the influence of coping with pain on depression, anxiety, and fatigue among women with breast cancer. Referring to previous studies, it is not uncommon that breast cancer treatment can have a deep influence on a women's physical, psychological, social, and spiritual well-being. Women develop their own coping strategies for the pain and other effects of treatment. According to the results of the study, breast cancer patients have better pain coping strategies also have lower levels of anxiety, fatigue, and depression.

Summary. Pain is an important consequence of bleeding episodes in haemophilia. Previous research has included pain frequency and severity among measures of illness-related disability and quality of life in haemophilia, but little systematic evidence exists about analgesic use and pain coping in haemophilia. This paper reports cross-sectional findings from a national survey of patients with severe haemophilia type A and type B. Respondents provided information about pain frequency, pain coping strategies (using the haemophilia-adapted CSQ), use of analgesics and other drugs, and described any concerns they had about their drug use. Participants registered with comprehensive care haemophilia centres did not differ from the rest of the sample on any of the factors recorded. Over one-third of participants expressed concerns about their drug use, the most frequent of which were about dependence on prescribed analgesics. Pain frequency was the most important predictor of analgesic use, but pain coping, and specifically negative thoughts about pain, was associated with concerns about drug use independently of other factors, including analgesic use and pain frequency. Further research will be needed to evaluate possible interventions to promote more effective pain coping in haemophilia, and to examine the possible effects of pain coping on illness outcomes beyond analgesic use, such as well-being and quality of life. Background: Spinal infections represent a therapeutic challenge. The often protracted course of the disease is accompanied by pain, which can lead to a chronic pain experience even after the infectious disease has been treated successfully. The aim of this study was to investigate possible risk factors of pain chronification. Methods: In a prospective study, 14 patients with spinal infections were examined at admission (T1), at discharge from inpatient therapy (T2), and three to eight months postoperatively (T3) byquestionnaires on risk factors for pain chronification and by quantitative sensory testing (QST). Results: In-patient treatment lasted on average 45.3 days (±33.13). The patients complained of pain for 3.43 months (±2.77) prior to inpatient treatment. The visual analogue scale (VAS) for pain (0–10) and the Oswestry Disability Index detected significant improvement in the course of the study. However, patients also reported catastrophic thinking, as well as fear of movement and (re)-injury. Conclusion: In summary, our results demonstrate that patients with spinal infections did not suffer from pain chronification, but might benefit from an interdisciplinary therapeutic approach, which emphasizes promoting active pain-coping strategies, as well as addressing fear of movement and catastrophic thinking.
