Gynecologic surgery with minimally invasive method using robotic or laparoscopic techniques has gained popularity for reducing perioperative discomfort and length of hospital stay. However, the debate over postoperative pain superiority between traditional laparoscopy and robotic surgery persist. This study compared the postoperative pain of patients within 24 h of robotic (RM) and laparoscopic myomectomy (LM). This retrospective cohort study included 24 and 53 patients who underwent RM and LM, respectively, between January 2019 and July 2023. The primary outcomes were the postoperative pain levels of patients within 24 h and the use and dosage of postoperative analgesia. Additional perioperative analgesia, including long-acting non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (Dynastat) and abdominal nerve block, was also recorded. The secondary outcomes were blood loss and hospitalization duration. The patient characteristics were similar between the groups. Factors that could potentially increase pain, such as the number of ports (p < 0.0001), additional procedures (p = 0.0195), operative time (p < 0.0001), number of myomas (p = 0.0057), and the largest myoma size (p = 0.0086), were significantly higher in the RM group than in the LM group. However, there were no significantly different in the postoperative visual analog scale pain scores, use and dosage of ketorolac and opioid, and use of Dynastat and nerve block between the groups. Hospitalization duration and intraoperative blood loss were similar between the groups. The introduction of robot-assisted minimally invasive esophageal surgery (RAMIE) represents a significant advancement in minimally invasive surgery. The robot system typically includes a high-resolution 3D camera and specially maneuverable instruments that are controlled by the surgeon from a console. By reducing the trauma caused by the intervention, this method allows for faster recovery compared to traditional open surgeries. Furthermore, the increased range of motion provided by the robot instruments enables more precise manipulations in the area of the esophagus and surrounding tissues, thereby improving the effectiveness of tumor resections and reconstructions. The results of clinical trials are promising: there is a decrease in postoperative pain, a lower risk of complications, and a shorter hospital stay, while the oncological outcomes are at least equivalent to open surgeries. As technology advances, robot-assisted esophageal surgery is expected to spread more widely, providing better patient care and surgical outcomes for both benign and malignant esophageal diseases.

Background: Multimodal analgesia is crucial for effective postoperative pain management in minor hand surgeries, enhancing patient satisfaction. The use of local wound infiltration with Ketorolac as an adjuvant pain management strategy is proposed for open trigger finger release surgery. This study aims to compare pain scores and functional outcomes between local wound infiltration with Ketorolac and oral non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs., Methods: This study is a double-blind, parallel design, randomized controlled trials. Sixty-nine patients underwent trigger finger surgery between December 2021 and October 2022 were randomized into one of three groups: oral Ibuprofen alone group, local Ketorolac alone group and local Ketorolac with oral Ibuprofen group. The assessment included postoperative numeric rating scale (NRS) pain score, Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand (DASH) score, grip strength, mobility of proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint. and complications., Results: NRS pain scores during movement of the operated fingers were significantly lower at 6 h in local Ketorolac alone group and local Ketorolac with oral Ibuprofen group compared to oral Ibuprofen alone group. However, there were no significant differences between the groups in postoperative DASH scores, grip strength, mobility of PIP joints, and complications., Conclusions: Local infiltration of Ketorolac as an adjunct in postoperative pain management has been shown to provide superior analgesia during finger movement within the initial 6 h following trigger finger surgery, in comparison to oral NSAIDs., Clinical Trial Registration: Thaiclinicaltrials.org identifier: TCTR20210825002. Background: Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are recommended for the management of acute postoperative pain as part of a multimodal strategy to reduce opioid use, relieve pain, and reduce chronic pain in non-cardiac surgery. However, significant concerns arise in cardiac surgery due to the potential adverse effects of NSAID including increased bleeding and acute kidney injury (AKI). We hypothesized that NSAIDs are effective against pain and safe in the early postoperative period following cardiac surgery, taking contraindications into account., Methods: The KETOPAIN trial is a prospective, double blind, 1:1 ratio, versus placebo multicentric trial, randomizing 238 patients scheduled for cardiac surgery. Written consent will be obtained for all participants. The inclusion criterion is patients more than 18 years old undergoing for elective cardiac surgery under cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). Patients will be allocated to the intervention (ketoprofen) group (n = 119) or the control (placebo) group (n = 119). In the intervention group, in addition to the standard treatment, patients will receive NSAIDs (ketoprofen) at a dose of 100 mg each 12 h 48 h after. The control group, in addition to the standard treatment, will receive a placebo of NSAIDs every 12 h for 48 h after surgery. An intention-to-treat analysis will be performed. The primary endpoint will be the intensity of acute postoperative pain at rest at 24 h from the end of surgery. Pain will be assessed using the numerous rating scale. The secondary endpoints will be postoperative pain on coughing during chest physiotherapy, postoperative pain until day 7, the pain trajectory between day 3 and day 7, cumulative opioid consumption within 48 h after surgery, nausea and vomiting, the occurrence of postoperative pulmonary complications within the first 7 days after surgery, neuropathic pain at 3 months, and quality of life at 3 months., Discussion: NSAIDs function as non-selective, reversible inhibitors of the cyclooxygenase enzyme and play a role in a multimodal pain management approach. While there are recommendations supporting the use of NSAIDs in major non-cardiac surgery, recent guidelines do not favor their use in cardiac surgery. However, this is based on low-quality evidence. Major concerns regarding NSAID use in cardiac surgery patients are potential increase in postoperative bleeding or AKI. However, few studies support the possible use of NSAIDs without the risk of bleeding and/or AKI. Also, in a recent French survey, many anesthesiologists reported using NSAIDs in cardiac surgery. To date, no large randomized study has been conducted to evaluate the efficacy of NSAIDs in the management of postoperative pain in cardiac surgery. Background-Objective(s): This randomized, split-mouth study aimed to compare postoperative complications following the surgical extraction of impacted lower third molars using piezosurgery versus conventional rotary instruments., Materials and Methods: Twenty-one patients, aged 18-35 years, with bilaterally and symmetrically impacted lower third molars, were randomly assigned to undergo extraction using piezosurgery on one side and conventional rotary instruments on the other., Results: The piezosurgery method required a longer operation time. However, it resulted in quicker resolution of postoperative swelling by the 7th day compared to the conventional method, where swelling persisted longer. Mandibular angle-tragus measurements were significantly higher with the conventional method on the 1st, 3rd, and 7th postoperative days. Although mouth opening decreased significantly after piezosurgery, it returned to preoperative levels by the 7th day, outperforming the conventional method. Postoperative pain was notably higher with the conventional method during the first four days but showed no significant difference from the 5th day onward. Alveolar bone healing was significantly better with piezosurgery at the 3rd and 6th months. Temporary paresthesia occurred in one patient from the conventional group, resolving within four weeks. Neither method resulted in alveolar osteitis., Conclusion(s): Within the study's limitations, piezosurgery demonstrated a reduction in postoperative discomfort, suggesting its advantage in enhancing patient recovery following lower third molar extractions., Clinical Significance: Piezosurgery, when used appropriately, can reduce postoperative complications compared to conventional methods. Clinicians should be aware of its indications, benefits, and potential challenges. This study explored the effects of L-PRF on pain, soft tissue healing, periodontal condition, and post-extraction bone repair of mandibular third molars (3Ms). A randomized, prospective, triple-blind, split-mouth clinical trial was conducted with 34 volunteers. Eligible patients were randomly allocated into two treatments: G1 (without L-PRF), G2 (alveoli filled with L-PRF), in which the removal of bilateral 3Ms was performed at the same surgical time. Outcomes were assessed according to a visual analogue scale (pain), soft tissue scoring system (wound healing), periodontal probing of mandibular second molar. Bone repair was determined by volumetric analysis (ITK-SNAP software) and fractal analysis (ImageJ software). An intention-to-treat approach to Statistical analysis was used. L-PRF reduced pain in the 7-day postoperative follow-up (p = 0.019) and not only improved soft tissue healing after 1 month of follow-up (p = 0.021), but also probing depth (distal face) in 3 months postoperatively (p = 0.011). Significant alveolar reduction occurred in 3 months after surgery in both treatments (p < 0.05), however, this was more significant in G1 (p = 0.016). The fractal dimension showed no statistical differences. L-PRF improved postoperative clinical parameters of pain, soft tissue healing, and periodontal condition, suggesting that it has a beneficial effect on preserving the alveolar ridge and accelerating the initial repair process.

Background: The aim of this study was to compare postoperative pain following total pulpotomy (TP) and root canal treatment (RCT) in mature molar teeth with irreversible pulpitis. To compare the traditional pulpitis classification system with the Wolters system in evaluating postoperative pain., Methods: Eighty mandibular molars with irreversible pulpitis were included and classified according to the Wolters (moderate/severe pulpitis). The teeth were randomly assigned to two groups (RCT or TP). RCT was performed following standardized protocols. TP was performed to the level of the canal orifices, and hemostasis was achieved with 2.5% sodium hypochlorite. A 3 mm layer of MTA was placed as the pulpotomy material. The teeth were restored with glass ionomer cement followed by composite. Pain scores were recorded preoperatively and, at 6, 12, 24, 48, and 72 h and 7 days after the interventions. The data were statistically analyzed using the Mann-Whitney U test, the Friedman test, the Wilcoxon signed-rank test, and the Spearman's correlation test. The significance level was set at 0.05., Results: Sixty-four patients were analyzed at the one-week follow-up and all were diagnosed as irreversible pulpitis according to the AAE; 22 teeth were classified as moderate and 42 teeth were classified as severe pulpitis according to Wolters. There was no significant difference between TP and RCT in pain scores in moderate pulpitis patients (p > 0.05). There was a significant difference between TP and RCT at 24 and 72 h of severe pulpitis; higher pain scores were observed in the RCT (p < 0.05)., Conclusions: In patients with moderate pulpitis, the TP procedure allowed symptom relief more quickly than RCT. Background: Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) successfully alleviates pain from knee osteoarthritis, but muscle strength and function are reduced for a long period postoperatively. Postoperative active resistance exercise may play a relevant role., Purpose: To systematically evaluate effects of lower-limb active resistance exercise (ARE) on mobility, physical function, muscle strength and pain intensity in patients with TKA., Methods: A search was conducted in PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library databases from inception to September 2023. Only randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that compared the effects of ARE and no intervention or other rehabilitation program without PRE were included. The outcome variables were mobility (Maximal walking speed [MWS]/6-Minute Walk Test[6MWT]), physical function (Stair Climb Test [SCT]/Timed Up and Go [TUG]), knee extension/ flexion power(KEP/KFP), joint range of motion (ROM) and pain. Standardized Mean Differences (SMD) or Mean Differences (MD) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated and combined in meta-analyses. The Cochrane Collaboration's Handbook were used for the methodological quality assessments. GRADE was used to assess the quality of evidence. The meta-analysis was performed using the RevMan 5.4 software., Results: A total of 14 randomized controlled trials, involving 880 patients, were finally included. The lower-limb ARE exhibited significantly greater improvement in MWS (MD 0.13, 95%CI 0.08-0.18, P < 0.00001), TUG(MD -0.92, 95%CI -1.55- -0.28, P = 0.005), KEP (SMD 0.58, 95%CI 0.20-0.96, P = 0.003), KFP (SMD 0.38, 95%CI 0.13-0.63, P = 0.003), ROM-flexion (MD 2.74, 95%CI 1.82-3.67, P < 0.00001) and VAS (MD - 4.65, 95% CI - 7.86- -1.44, p = 0.005) compared to conventional exercise(CE) immediately post-intervention. However, there were no statistically significant differences between both groups in regard to 6MWT (MD 7.98, 95%CI -4.60-20.56, P = 0.21), SCT (MD -0.79, 95%CI -1.69-0.10, P = 0.08) and ROM-extension (MD -0.60, 95%CI -1.23-0.03, P = 0.06)., Conclusions: According to the results of meta-analysis, patients undergoing TKA who receive the lower extremity ARE show better clinical effects in terms of pain relief, strength recovery and knee ROM. Background: There has been no consensus on what power of radiofrequency energy can be used to produce the best surgical results in patients with atrial fibrillation. In addition, patients undergoing local anesthesia and fentanyl analgesia may experience pain when radiofrequency ablation is performed. This study investigated the effect of different power radiofrequency ablations in treatment and postoperative pain in patients with atrial fibrillation., Methods: A retrospective study was performed with 60 patients who underwent radiofrequency ablation for atrial fibrillation between January and June 2023. Patients were divided into 2 groups according to the power of the radiofrequency ablation catheter used, with 30 patients in the conventional power group (35 W) and 30 patients in the high-power group (50 W). The cardiac electrophysiological indexes and postoperative pain of the 2 groups were compared., Results: Most of the procedural key parameters between the 2 groups had no significant differences. However, the total application time during radiofrequency ablation and pulmonary vein isolation time in the high-power group were significantly shorter than those in the conventional power group (p < 0.001). Patients in the high-power group reported significantly less pain than those in the conventional power group in the immediate postoperative period and the late postoperative period (p < 0.001)., Conclusions: High-power radiofrequency ablation showed a shorter treatment time, and could reduce postoperative pain compared to conventional power ablation., (© 2024. While robotic and laparoscopic surgeries are both minimally invasive in nature, they are intrinsically different approaches and it is critical to understand outcome differences between the two. Studies evaluating pain outcomes and opioid requirement differences between the robotic and laparoscopic colorectal resections are conflicting and often underpowered. In this retrospective, cohort study, we compare postoperative opioid requirements, reported as morphine milligram equivalents (MME), postoperative average and highest pain scores across postoperative days (POD) 0-5, and return to work in patients who underwent robotic versus laparoscopic colorectal resections. The sample size was selected based on power calculations. Daily pain scores and MME were used as outcomes in linear mixed effect models with unstructured covariance between time points. Propensity score weighting was used to adjust for imbalances. Patients in the robotic group required significantly less opioids as measured by MME on all postoperative days (p = 0.004), as well as lower average and highest daily pain scores for POD 0-5 (p = 0.02, and p = 0.006, respectively). In a linear mixed-effects model, robotic resections were associated with a decrease in average pain scores by 0.36 over time (p = 0.03) and 35 fewer MME requirements than the laparoscopic group (p = 0.0004). Patients in the robotic arm had earlier return to work (2.1 vs 3.8 days, p = 0.036). The robotic approach to colorectal resections is associated with significantly less postoperative pain, decreased opioid requirements, and earlier return to work when compared to laparoscopy, suggesting that the robotic platform provides important clinical advantages over the laparoscopic approach., (© 2024. Background: Thoracoscopic-guided thoracic paravertebral nerve block (TG-TPVB) and thoracoscopic-guided intercostal nerve block (TG-INB) are two postoperative analgesia technology for thoracic surgery. This study aims to compared the analgesic effect of TG-TPVB and TG-INB after uniportal video-asssited thoracic surgery (UniVATS)., Methods: Fifty-eight patients were randomly allocated to the TG-TPVB group and the TG-INB group. The surgical time of nerve block, the visual analog scale (VAS) scores, the consumption of sufentanil and the number of patient-controlled intravenous analgesic (PCIA) presses within 24 h after surgery, the incidence of adverse reactions were compared between the two groups., Results: The VAS scores were significantly lower during rest and coughing at 2, 6, 12, and 24 h in the TG-TPVB group than in the TG-INB group (P < 0.05). The consumption of sufentanil and the number of PCIA presses within 24 h after surgery were significantly lower in the TG-TPVB group than in the TG-INB group (P < 0.001).The surgical time of nerve block was significantly shorter in the TG-TPVB group than in the TG-INB group (P < 0.001). The incidence of bleeding at the puncture point was lower in the TG-TPVB group than that in the TG-INB group (P < 0.05)., Conclusion: TG-TPVB demonstrated superior acute pain relieve after uniVATS, shorter surgical time and non-inferior adverse effects than TG-INB., (© 2024. Objective: This randomized controlled and double-blind study aimed to investigate whether the analgesic effect of the adductor canal block (ACB) combined with the genicular nerve block (GNB) after total knee arthroplasty is noninferior to that of the adductor canal block combined with local infiltration analgesia (LIA)., Methods: A total of 102 patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty under general anesthesia were included and randomly divided into: ACB + GNB and ACB + LIA groups; the ACB + LIA group received 80 mL of 0.2% ropivacaine with adrenaline 10 µg/mL for LIA, whereas the ACB + GNB group received 4 mL of 0.2% ropivacaine for the blockade of five peri-knee nerves. The primary outcome was the median difference in the visual analog scale scores at rest at 24 h between the two groups. Secondary outcomes involved the median differences in the pain scores at other time points. Other outcomes included the cumulative dosage of opioids calculated in morphine equivalents in the first 24 h and indicators related to knee joint functional recovery., Results: In total, 36 and 38 patients were included in the ACB + GNB and ACB + LIA groups, respectively. We found that the median difference (95% confidence internal) in postoperative rest pain at 24 h (noninferiority criteria, △ = 1) was - 0.5 (- 1 to 0, p = 0.002). Background: This paper reviews the scope of research on kinesiophobia in patients after cardiac surgery. Further, it reviews the current situation, evaluation tools, risk factors, adverse effects, and intervention methods of kinesiophobia to provide a reference for promoting early rehabilitation of patients after cardiac surgery., Methods: Guided by the scoping methodology, the Web of Science, PubMed, CINAHL, Cochrane Library, China Biomedical Literature Database, VIP Database, Wanfang Database, CNKI, and other databases were searched from database inception until July 31, 2024. The studies obtained were screened, summarised and systematically analysed by two researchers., Results: Eighteen studies (16 cross-sectional studies, one qualitative study, and one randomised controlled trial) were included. The incidence of kinesiophobia in patients after cardiac surgery was 39.20-82.57%, and the Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia Heart (TSK-SV Heart) was used to evaluate this incidence. The influencing factors of kinesiophobia in patients after cardiac surgery included demographic characteristics, pain severity, frailty, exercise self-efficacy, disease-related factors, and psychosocial factors. Kinesiophobia led to adverse health outcomes such as reduced recovery, prolonged hospital stays, and decreased quality of life in patients after cardiac surgery, and there were few studies on intervention methods for postoperative kinesiophobia., Conclusion: The kinesiophobia assessment tools suitable for patients after cardiac surgery should be improved, and intervention methods to promote the early recovery of patients after major clinical surgery and those with difficult and critical diseases should be actively researched., (© 2024. Background: Percutaneous auricular nerve stimulation (neuromodulation) involves implanting electrodes around the ear and administering an electric current. A device is currently available within the USA cleared to treat symptoms from opioid withdrawal, and multiple reports suggest a possible postoperative analgesic effect. The current randomized controlled pilot study was undertaken to (1) determine the feasibility and optimize the protocol for a subsequent definitive clinical trial; and (2) estimate the treatment effect of auricular neuromodulation on postoperative pain and opioid consumption following two ambulatory surgical procedures., Methods: Within the recovery room following cholecystectomy or hernia repair, an auricular neuromodulation device (NSS-2 Bridge, Masimo, Irvine, California, USA) was applied. Participants were randomized to 5 days of either electrical stimulation or sham in a double-blinded fashion., Results: In the first 5 days, the median (IQR) pain level for active stimulation (n=15) was 0.6 (0.3-2.4) vs 2.6 (1.1-3.7) for the sham group (n=15) (p=0.041). Concurrently, the median oxycodone use for the active stimulation group was 0 mg (0-1), compared with 0 mg (0-3) for the sham group (p=0.524). Regarding the highest pain level experienced over the entire 8-day study period, only one participant (7%) who received active stimulation experienced severe pain, versus seven (47%) in those given sham (p=0.031)., Conclusions: Percutaneous auricular neuromodulation reduced pain scores but not opioid requirements during the initial week after cholecystectomy and hernia repair. Background/importance: Cleft palate surgery is associated with significant postoperative pain. Effective pain control can decrease stress and agitation in children undergoing cleft palate surgery and improve surgical outcomes. However, limited evidence often results in inadequate pain control after cleft palate surgery., Objectives: The aim of this review was to evaluate the available evidence and to develop recommendations for optimal pain management after cleft palate surgery using procedure-specific postoperative pain management (PROSPECT) methodology., Evidence Review: MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane Databases were searched for randomized controlled trials and systematic reviews assessing pain in children undergoing cleft palate repair published in English language from July 2002, through August 2023., Findings: Of 1048 identified studies, 19 randomized controlled trials and 4 systematic reviews met the inclusion criteria. Interventions that improved postoperative pain, and are recommended, include suprazygomatic maxillary nerve block or palatal nerve block (if maxillary nerve block cannot be performed). Addition of dexmedetomidine to local anesthetic for suprazygomatic maxillary nerve block or, alternatively, as intravenous administration perioperatively is recommended. These interventions should be combined with a basic analgesic regimen including acetaminophen and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Introduction: Genicular nerve blocks (GNBs) are an emerging technique that have been used as a part of multimodal analgesia for total knee arthroplasty. The efficacy of intraoperative landmark-based GNBs, a recently introduced technique, has been established. We hypothesized that it would provide non-inferior postoperative analgesia compared with periarticular infiltration (PAI) when combined with continuous adductor canal block., Methods: This study randomized 140 patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty to receive either intraoperative landmark-based GNB (GNB group) or PAI (PAI group), with 139 completing the study. The primary outcomes were the pain scores at rest and during movement at 12 hours postoperatively on an 11-point Numerical Rating Scale; the non-inferiority margin was 1. Pain scores at additional time points, intravenous morphine consumption, time to first rescue analgesia, functional performance and muscle strength tests, and sleep disturbance were also assessed., Results: At 12 hours postoperatively, the PAI and GNB groups had median resting pain scores of 0 (0-2) and 0 (0-2), respectively. The median difference was 0 (95% CI -0.4 to 0.4, p=1), with the 95% CI upper limit below the prespecified non-inferiority margin. The median pain score during movement was 1.5 (0-2.3) and 2 (1-3.1) in the PAI and GNB groups, respectively. The median difference was 0.9 (95% CI 0.3 to 1.6, p=0.004), failing to demonstrate non-inferiority. The GNB group had higher intravenous morphine consumption at 12 hours postoperatively and a shorter time to first rescue analgesia., Conclusions: GNB compared with PAI provides non-inferior resting pain relief. Objective: To investigate the potential association between anxiety and depression and surgical outcomes in patients undergoing LSS. By analyzing data from the Nationwide Inpatient Sample (NIS) database, we aim to identify whether anxiety and depression serve as predictors for postoperative complications and pain-related symptoms. Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted via the NIS database. Those undergoing LSS from 2010 to 2019 were divided into four groups: those with a diagnosis of anxiety, depression, both depression and anxiety, and neither depression nor anxiety. The chi-squared test, rank sum test, the Student-Newman-Keuls, least significant difference, and Bonferroni tests were used to identify differences between these groups. Logistic regression analysis was utilized to determine if anxiety and depression were predictors for postoperative complications and pain-related symptoms. Results: From 2010 to 2019, 832,099 patients undergoing LSS were identified. Patients with either anxiety or depression were associated with heavier economic burdens ($85,375, $76,840, $88,542 in the anxiety, depression, and comorbid group, respectively, p < 0.001) and prolonged hospital stay ( p < 0.001). They were identified to experience higher risks of various complications especially thrombophilia (OR = 1.82, and 1.55 in the anxiety and the depression group, respectively, p < 0.01). Multiple pain-related symptoms, but face reduced risks of inpatient mortality (OR = 0.71, 0.75, and 0.63 in the anxiety, depression, and comorbid group, respectively, p < 0.01). Conclusions: The overall morbidities of depression and anxiety were relatively high. Psychiatric comorbidities were closely correlated with the negative outcomes after LSS. Background: Local anesthetics are used in various sites and mechanisms to maximize perioperative analgesia and reduce opioid use and side effects. Pain management in the bariatric setting is challenging and the efficacy of local anesthetics intraoperatively is under current evaluation., Objectives: To determine the safety and efficacy of a new intra-abdominal anesthetic technique performed during laparoscopic bariatric operations: visceral block., Methods: During this prospective randomized double-blinded pilot study, 16 patients undergoing bariatric surgery were treated with the injection of ropivacaine to the anterior esophagogastric junction fat, and 15 were injected with saline as control., Results: The procedure was shown to be safe, and no adverse events nor side effects were encountered. A non-statistically significant trend toward the use of a non-opioid analgesia was documented during the first postoperative hours., Conclusions: Visceral block is a safe and feasible intraoperative procedure. A trend toward its efficacy warrants future larger scale studies.

Introduction: There is uncertainty regarding the method of mesh fixation and peritoneal closure during transabdominal preperitoneal (TAPP) repair for inguinal hernias, with no definitive guidelines to guide surgeon choice., Methods: MEDLINE, Cochrane, Central Register of Clinical Trials, and Web of Science were searched for RCTs published until November 2023. Risk ratios (RRs) and mean differences (MD) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were pooled with a random-effects model. Statistical significance was defined as p < 0.05. Heterogeneity was assessed using the Cochran Q test and I 2 statistics, with p values inferior to 0.10 and I 2  > 25% considered significant. Statistical analyses were conducted using Review Manager version 5.4 and RStudio version 4.1.2 (R Foundation for Statistical Computing)., Results: Eight randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were included, comprising 624 patients, of whom 309 (49.5%) patients were submitted to TAPP with the use of tacks, and 315 (50.5%) received suture fixation. The use of tacker fixation was associated with a significant increase in postoperative pain at 24 h (MD 0.79 [VAS score]; 95% CI 0.38 to 1.19; p < 0.0002; I 2  = 87%) and one week (MD 0.42 [VAS score]; 95% CI 0.05 to 0.79; p < 0.03, I 2  = 84%). The use of tacks was associated with shorter operative time (MD-25.80 [min]; 95% - 34.31- - 17.28; P < 0.00001; I 2  = 94%). No significant differences were found in overall complications, chronic pain, seromas, hematomas, and urinary retention rates., Conclusion: In patients who underwent TAPP hernia repair, tacks are associated with decreased operative time but increased postoperative pain at 24 h and one week., (© 2024. Objective: Upper airway stimulation effectively treats patients with obstructive sleep apnea, especially among those with low long-term compliance with continuous positive airway pressure. Traditional methods to implant the hypoglossal nerve stimulator involve retraction of the digastric tendon to identify the nerve and improve exposure for stimulator implantation. Transient submental pain and discomfort are known side effects of the procedure. Placement without retraction provides an alternative approach to minimize postoperative pain. This study compares post-operative pain outcomes of patients in whom the digastric tendon was and was not retracted., Methods: Retrospective chart review of patients who received the hypoglossal nerve stimulation implant at a single institution between 2017 and 2021. A combination of descriptive and qualitative data, including age, gender, comorbidities, and postoperative symptoms are analyzed to characterize patient outcomes resulting from this intraoperative technique. The categorical and continuous variables were analyzed using chi-squared tests and independent t-tests, respectively., Results: Patients report overall satisfaction after implantation and titration. A total of 108 patients underwent HGNS implantation between September 2017 and January 2021 using the aforementioned techniques. 1.69 % of patients experienced postoperative submental pain as compared to 18.37 % prior to the change in technique (p < 0.01)., Conclusion: Avoidance of digastric tendon retraction in the implantation of the stimulating lead is a safe and effective technique that reduces postoperative pain and discomfort. Background: There is a paucity of literature regarding patients who have post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) following primary total hip arthroplasty (THA). The purpose of this study was to compare the rates of postoperative complications, prescriptions, health care utilization, and revision arthroplasty of patients who had PTSD undergoing primary THA against a propensity matched control group of patients who did not have PTSD (NPTSD)., Methods: The TriNetX database was queried to identify PTSD patients undergoing primary THA. Patients were then propensity matched in a 1:1 ratio based on twelve preoperative characteristics to a cohort of NPTSD patients. Postoperative prescriptions and rates of health care utilization were analyzed within 5 days, 14 days, and 1 month postoperatively. Complications were analyzed within one month. Revision arthroplasty rates were analyzed within 1 year and 2 years., Results: A total of 198,560 patients undergoing primary THA were identified. Ultimately, 1,310 PTSD patients were successfully propensity matched to a cohort of 1,310 NPTSD patients. Patients who have PTSD presented to the emergency department at significantly higher rates than NPTSD patients within 14 days and 1 month postoperatively. Within 1 month postoperatively, cohorts were prescribed opioid analgesics at similar rates (P = .709). Patients who had PTSD received more prescriptions per patient compared to NPTSD patients. Patients who had PTSD were also found to have a higher number of total complications per person within 1 month (P = .022). Within 2 years postoperatively, rates of revision hip arthroplasty were comparable between cohorts (P = .912)., Conclusions: Patients who have PTSD experience similar rates of revision hip arthroplasty and opioid prescribing compared to NPTSD patients following primary THA; however, within 1 month postoperatively, emergency department visits were greater in PTSD patients. In response to the national opioid crisis, there have been increasing efforts to decrease opioid usage in favor of nonopioid alternatives. We compared post-discharge opioid and nonopioid pain medication prescriptions in lumbar microdiscectomy (MLD) patients before and after implementation of an opioid-sparing pathway for outpatient spine surgery. Patients were grouped into pre-implementation (pre) and post-implementation (post) cohorts based on date of surgery relative to pathway implementation on September 1, 2018. Primary outcomes were the average daily morphine milligram equivalent (MME) of opioids and percentages of nonopioids prescribed at 2-week, 6-week, and 3-month follow-up. Two hundred consecutive MLD patients (100 pre, 100 post) were evaluated. Pre-implementation, average daily MME significantly decreased from 19.59 at 2 weeks, to 1.73 at 6 weeks, to 0.11 at 3 months postoperatively (p < 0.001); post-implementation, average daily MME was 14.12, 1.31, and 0.27, respectively (p < 0.001). Average daily MME at 2-week follow-up decreased by 5.48 (p < 0.001) following implementation, while the rate of nonopioid prescriptions increased from 59% to 79% (p = 0.002) overall, specifically for acetaminophen (8% vs. 47%, p < 0.001) and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (36% vs. 61%, p < 0.001). There were no significant differences at 6-week and 3-month follow-up. Opioid usage decreased while nonopioid pain medication usage increased from discharge to 2 weeks postoperatively. Beyond 2 weeks, opioid usage decreased significantly but were comparable between pre-implementation and post-implementation.

Background: Effective postoperative pain management is essential for patient satisfaction and an uneventful postoperative course, particularly in body contouring procedures. Systemic analgesic regimens can be supported by regional procedures, such as the transverse abdominis plane (TAP) block, but these have a limited duration of action. In contrast, thoracic epidural analgesia offers the possibility of a longer-lasting, individualized regional anesthesia administered by a patient-controlled analgesia pump., Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of a patient-controlled epidural analgesia to better classify the clinical value of this procedure in abdominoplasties., Materials and Methods: This work reviewed the digital medical charts of patients who underwent selective abdominoplasty without combined surgical procedures between September 2018 and August 2022. Evaluated data comprise the postoperative analgesia regimen, including on-demand medication, mobilization time, inpatient length of stay, and clinical outcome. The patients were grouped by the presence of a thoracic epidural catheter. This catheter was placed before anesthetic induction and a saturation dose was preoperatively applied. Postoperative PCEA patients received a basal rate and could independently administer boluses. Basal rate was individually adjusted during daily additional pain visits., Results: The study cohort included 112 patients. Significant differences in the demand for supportive nonepidural opiate medication were shown between the patient-controlled epidural analgesia (PCEA) group (n = 57) and the non-PCEA group (n = 55), depending on the time after surgery. PCEA patients demanded less medication during the early postoperative days (POD 0: PCEA 0.13 (±0.99) mg vs non-PCEA 2.59 (±4.55) mg, P = 0.001; POD 1: PCEA 0.79 mg (±3.06) vs non-PCEA 2.73 (±3.98) mg, P = 0.005), but they required more during the later postoperative phase (POD 3: PCEA 2.76 (±5.60) mg vs non-PCEA 0.61 (±2.01) mg, P = 0.008; POD 4: PCEA 1.64 (±3.82) mg vs non-PCEA 0.07 (±2.01) mg, P = 0.003). Background: Persistent postsurgical pain (PPSP) after lung cancer surgery is common and current definitions are based on evaluations at a single time point after surgery. Pain intensity and symptoms may however fluctuate and change over time, and be impacted by multiple and shifting factors. Studies of postoperative recovery patterns and transition from acute to chronic pain are needed for further investigation of preventive measures and treatments to modify unfavourable recovery paths., Methods: In this explorative study, 85 patients undergoing surgery due to either presumptive or confirmed lung cancer reported pain intensities bi-monthly for 12 months. Pain trajectories during recovery were investigated, using group-based trajectory modelling. Associations with possible risk factors for PPSP, including clinical variables and anxiety and depression score (HADS), were also explored., Results: A trajectory model containing three 12-month pain recovery groups was computed. One group without PPSP fully recovered (50%) within two to three months. Another group with mild-intensity PPSP followed a protracted recovery trajectory (37%), while incomplete recovery was observed in the last group (13%). Acute postoperative pain and younger age were associated with a less favourable recovery trajectory. More neuropathic pain symptoms were observed in patients with incomplete recovery., Conclusions: Three clinically relevant recovery trajectories were identified, based on comprehensive pain tracking. Higher acute postoperative pain intensity was associated with an unfavourable pain recovery trajectory., Significance Statement: Understanding the transition from acute to chronic postoperative pain and identifying preoperative risk factors is essential for the development of targeted treatments and the implementation of preventive measures. Background: Uniportal thoracoscopic right middle lobectomy (RML) poses greater technical challenges than other lobectomies. Although two-port thoracoscopy offers convenience, it results in heightened surgical trauma and scarring. The periareolar incision is rarely used in lobectomy while known for its cosmetic advantages. This study presents the periareolar access (combining a periareolar port and a 1-cm port) for video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) in RML, comparing it with the traditional uniportal technique in both male and female patients., Methods: Eighty patients who underwent RML were randomly divided into two groups: the periareolar VATS (PV) approach (n = 40) and the uniportal VATS (UV) approach (n = 40) from August 2020 to February 2023. All patients were followed up for 1 year and clinical data were collected and analyzed., Results: No significant differences in complications, blood loss, duration of chest tube placement, and length of postoperative hospital stay were observed between two methods. However, the PV group exhibited significantly shorter operative time, reduced postoperative visible scarring and lower visual analogue scores (VAS) for postoperative pain (P < 0.05). Additionally, the PV group demonstrated significantly higher cosmetic and satisfaction scores at the 6-month postoperative assessment (P < 0.05). Notably, breast ultrasound follow-up revealed two cases injuries of the mammary glands in female patients, and sensory function of most nipple and areola remained intact except two cases in all PV group patients., Conclusions: Periareolar VATS emerges as a promising alternative approach for RML, providing clear benefits in pain management and cosmetic outcomes, while maintaining safety and convenience., (© 2024. Ovariohysterectomy is a common surgical procedure in pet rabbits and one of its potential complications is postoperative gastrointestinal stasis, possibly exacerbated by prolonged surgery time. The objective of this prospective clinical study was to compare two techniques for surgical haemostasis with respect to procedural duration, postoperative pain, and return of gastrointestinal function, in 22 female rabbits undergoing ovariohysterectomy. Rabbits were assigned to one of two groups: conventional vessel ligation (CVL) and haemostasis with a vessel sealing device (VSD). The outcome variables for comparison between the two groups, recorded at 60-, 120-, 180-, and 360-minutes post anaesthesia, were duration of anaesthesia and surgery, postoperative Rabbit Grimace Scale scores, and measured food intake and faecal output. The vessel sealing device caused no appreciable blood loss. The duration of both surgery and anaesthesia was shorter in group VSD (20 ± 4 and 31 ± 6 minutes, respectively) than in group CVL (43 ± 9 and 54 ± 9 minutes, respectively) (p < 0.001). There were no differences between groups in time elapsed from the end of anaesthesia to both first food intake and first defecation. In both groups, the score of the Rabbit Grimace Scale decreased over time with statistically significant differences between 60 minutes and all the subsequent time points (p < 0.001). Introduction: For several years, ropivacaine has been the standard-of-care for establishing postoperative femoral nerve block in total knee arthroplasty (TKA) setting and is still widely in use but new approaches such as the patient-controlled administration of sublingual sufentanil tablets system (SSTS) seem to offer good clinical results. Our aim is to compare the SSTS to single shot peri-nervous injection of ropivacaine (single shot) after TKA in terms of effectiveness in pain management and of time to recovery., Materials and Methods: A total of 165 patients undergoing TKA were enrolled. Eighty-four patients were randomly allocated in the SSTS group and 81 patients in the single shot group. The primary objective of the study was to evaluate performance of Timed Up and Go test. Secondary objectives were to measure the length of stay, NRS pain scale, the adherence to the prescribed plan, the joint mobility, the frequency of rescue analgesic use, side effects and patients' satisfaction., Results: Of all patients of the single shot group, 64 were withdrawn from the study as they unable to achieve pain control; only one patient was withdrawn from the SSTS group. Times for the "Timed Up and Go" test on the 3rd postoperative day were 8.4 ± 1.6 and 11.8 ± 3.6 in the SSTS group (n = 83) and single shot group (n = 17), respectively (p < .001)., Conclusions: SSTS provides better pain management when compared to peri-nervous ropivacaine single shot injection after TKA., (© 2024. Study Objective: A Bayesian network meta-analysis was performed to compare the analgesic efficacy of the following nerve block techniques: femoral nerve block (FNB), adductor canal block (ACB), infiltration between the popliteal artery and the capsule of the posterior knee (iPACK), and genicular nerve block (GNB) following total knee arthroplasty (TKA)., Design: Systematic review and network meta-analysis (NMA)., Patients and Measurements: We searched the Web of Science, PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library databases until September 20, 2022. Patients who were treated by any of the above four nerve block techniques (alone or in combination) after TKA were included. Patients who underwent minimally invasive knee surgery were excluded. The indicators included pain scores during rest and mobilization, opioid consumption after surgery, postsurgical mobilization function (ROM [range of motion], TUG [Timed-Up-and-Go] test) at 24 h and 48 h, and length of hospital stay. The risk of bias was assessed by the Cochrane risk of bias tool., Results: Forty-two studies involving 2857 patients were eligible for this study. This NMA suggested that ACB + iPACK was the most efficacious option for improving ambulation ability and shortening the length of hospital stay. Furthermore, ACB + iPACK was the best regimen for resting-pain and movement-pain relief (78% and 87%, respectively) and for reducing opioid consumption (90%) at 48 h. However, FNB + iPACK was the most efficacious option for relief of resting pain (42%) and reducing opioid consumption (68%) at 24 h; GNB was the most efficacious option for movement pain relief at 24 h (94%)., Conclusion: Considering both pain control and knee functional recovery, ACB + iPACK may be the optimal analgesic regimen for patients after TKA. At the same time, it significantly reduces pain and opioid consumption at 48 h. Research Question: Do women with endometriosis undergoing oocyte retrieval for fertility preservation experience the same level of pain as women undergoing oocyte retrieval for IVF?, Design: This retrospective cohort study included 796 cycles in women with endometriosis undergoing oocyte retrieval for fertility preservation (n = 401) or IVF (n = 395) between January 2020 and October 2022. Post-operative pain assessments were compared between the two groups using a numeric rating scale (NRS)., Results: Women in the fertility preservation group were younger (32.1 ± 4.2 years versus 35.1 ± 4.1 years; P < 0.001), had a lower body mass index (22.8 ± 3.9 kg/m 2 versus 24.6 ± 4.4 kg/m 2 ; P < 0.001) and had a lower concentration of anti-Müllerian hormone (1.8 ± 1.5 ng/ml versus 2.15 ± 2.11 ng/ml; P = 0.026) in comparison with women in the IVF group. The oestrogen concentration on the day of ovulation trigger was higher in women in the fertility preservation group (2188 ± 1152 pg/ml versus 2081 ± 995 pg/ml; P = 0.004), and the prevalence rates of adenomyosis and digestive endometrial lesions were lower in women in the fertility preservation group (14% versus 29%, P < 0.001; 16% versus 25%, P = 0.003, respectively) compared with women in the IVF group. After oocyte puncture, more women in the fertility preservation group had an NRS pain score >3 (moderate to severe pain) compared with women in the IVF group (20% versus 14%; P = 0.018). The progestin-primed ovarian stimulation (PPOS) protocol was identified as an independent predictive factor of greater post-operative pain (adjusted OR 2.30, 95% CI 1.06-5.15; P = 0.039)., Conclusion: Women with endometriosis undergoing fertility preservation reported more intense post-operative pain in the recovery room than women undergoing IVF. Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of a single-dose topical rifamycin application on postoperative complications after impacted lower third molar surgery., Materials and Methods: This prospective, controlled clinical study consisted of individuals with bilaterally impacted lower third molars that would be extracted for orthodontic reasons. The extraction sockets were irrigated with 3 ml/250 mg of rifamycin solution in Group 1, while in Group 2 (control group) the extraction sockets were irrigated with 20 ml of physiological saline. Pain intensity was measured daily for 7 days by using visual analog scale. Trismus and edema were evaluated preoperatively and on the postoperative days 2 and 7 by calculating the proportional changes in maximum mouth opening and mean distance between reference points of the face, respectively. Paired samples t-test, Wilcoxon signed rank test and Chi-square test were used to analyze the study variables., Results: 35 patients (19 female, 16 male) were included in the study. The mean age of all participants was 22.19±4.98. Alveolitis was observed in 8 patients, (6 in the control group, 2 in the rifamycin group). There was no statistically significant difference between groups in terms of trismus and swelling measurements on the 2nd and 7th postoperative days (p>0.05). Background/aim: Hysterectomy is the most frequent gynecological surgery. Vaginal hysterectomy (VH) seems to be related to favorable perioperative outcomes compared to abdominal or laparoscopic approaches. As the population ages, anesthesia that is safer for the elderly, such as local anesthesia (LA) with conscious sedation, is gaining popularity and is related to favorable outcomes in patients' recovery compared to general or regional anesthesia. We aimed to evaluate the efficacy of dexmedetomidine versus propofol for women undergoing VH for uterine prolapse under LA and conscious sedation., Patients and Methods: A prospective study on 40 women with uterine prolapse stage ≥3 who had VH under LA with conscious sedation under either dexmedetomidine (n=20) or propofol (n=20) was performed. A standardized surgical approach with continuous hemodynamic monitoring and sedation assessment using the Ramsay Sedation Scale (RSS) was conducted. The primary endpoint of the study was to determine the percentage of patients receiving intraoperative fentanyl., Results: Analysis of outcomes demonstrated a significant reduction in the proportion of patients requiring intraoperative rescue fentanyl (35% vs. 5%, respectively, p=0.04) and in postoperative pain scores, with more patients achieving an optimal RSS score of 3 in the dexmedetomidine group., Conclusion: Based on the findings of the present study, dexmedetomidine offered superior analgesia and patient comfort compared to propofol, suggesting a favorable anesthetic profile for VH under LA., (Copyright © 2024, International Institute of Anticancer Research (Dr. George J. Background: Total knee replacement (TKR) is the gold standard treatment for end-stage chronic osteoarthritis pain, yet many patients report chronic postoperative pain after TKR. The search for preoperative predictors for chronic postoperative pain following TKR has been studied with inconsistent findings., Methods: This study investigates the predictive value of quantitative sensory testing (QST) and PainDETECT for postoperative pain 3, 6 and 12 months post-TKR. We assessed preoperative and postoperative (3 and 6 months) QST measures in 77 patients with knee OA (KOA) and 41 healthy controls, along with neuropathic pain scores in patients (PainDETECT). QST parameters included pressure pain pressure threshold (PPT), pain tolerance threshold (PTT), conditioned pain modulation (CPM) and temporal summation (TS) using cuff algometry, alongside mechanical hyperalgesia and temporal summation to repeated pinprick stimulation., Results: Compared to healthy controls, KOA patients at baseline demonstrated hyperalgesia to pinprick stimulation at the medial knee undergoing TKR, and cuff pressure at the calf. Lower cuff algometry PTT and mechanical pinprick hyperalgesia were associated with preoperative KOA pain intensity. Moreover, preoperative pinprick pain hyperalgesia explained 25% of variance in pain intensity 12 months post-TKR and preoperative neuropathic pain scores also captured 30% and 20% of the variance in postoperative pain at 6 and 12 months respectively. A decrease in mechanical pinprick hyperalgesia from before surgery to 3 months after TKR was associated with lower postoperative pain at the 12 months post-TKR follow-up., Conclusion: Our findings suggest that preoperative pinprick hyperalgesia and neuropathic-like pain symptoms show predictive value for the development of chronic post-TKR pain., Significance Statement: This study's findings hold significant implications for chronic pain management in knee osteoarthritis patients, particularly those undergoing total knee replacement surgery (TKR). Mechanical hyperalgesia and neuropathic pain-like characteristics predict postoperative pain 1 year after TKR, emphasizing the importance of understanding pain phenotypes in OA for selecting appropriate pain management strategies. Purpose: The results of past studies comparing percutaneous techniques with traditional open techniques for hallux valgus are controversial. Therefore, this study aimed to compare the radiologic and clinical outcomes of percutaneous and open distal chevron osteotomies., Methods: Seventy-one patients with mild to severe hallux valgus deformity were randomized to undergo percutaneous distal chevron osteotomy (percutaneous group, n = 36) or open distal chevron osteotomy (open group, n = 35) between October 2019 and September 2020. Radiological and clinical outcomes were assessed preoperatively and postoperatively. Outcome measures included the foot and ankle outcome score, foot functional index, visual analogue scale (VAS) scores for pain, range of motion (ROM) of the first metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint, hallux valgus angle, intermetatarsal angle, and first metatarsal shortening. Additionally, the first metatarsal declination angle was measured to evaluate sagittal malunion., Results: The mean first metatarsal declination angle decreased significantly at 12 months postoperatively in both groups (p = 0.021 and p < 0.001 in the percutaneous and open groups, respectively), and the decrement was significantly greater in the open group (p = 0.033). The mean VAS score for pain on postoperative day one was 4.2 ± 1.9 and 5.3 ± 1.7 in the percutaneous and open groups, respectively (p = 0.019). The mean ROM of the first MTP joint did not change significantly after surgery, from 72.5 ± 7.5 preoperatively to 71.0 ± 9.5 at 12 months postoperatively in the percutaneous group (p = 0.215); however, it decreased significantly from 70.6 ± 7.3 preoperatively to 63.4 ± 10.4 at 12 months postoperatively in the open group (p < 0.001). Background: Anterior knee pain (AKP) following total knee arthroplasty (TKA) with patellar preservation is a common complication that significantly affects patients' quality of life. This study aimed to develop a machine-learning model to predict the likelihood of developing AKP after TKA using radiological variables., Methods: A cohort of 131 anterior stabilized TKA cases (105 patients) without patellar resurfacing was included. Patients underwent a follow-up evaluation with a minimum 1-year follow-up. The primary outcome was AKP, and radiological measurements were used as predictor variables. There were 2 observers who made the radiological measurement, which included lower limb dysmetria, joint space, and coronal, sagittal, and axial alignment. Machine-learning models were applied to predict AKP. The best-performing model was selected based on accuracy, precision, sensitivity, specificity, and Kappa statistics. Python 3.11 with Pandas and PyCaret libraries were used for analysis., Results: A total of 35 TKA had AKP (26.7%). Patient-reported outcomes were significantly better in the patients who did not have AKP. The Gradient Boosting Classifier performed best for both observers, achieving an area under the curve of 0.9261 and 0.9164, respectively. The mechanical tibial slope was the most important variable for predicting AKP. The Shapley test indicated that high/low mechanical tibial slope, a shorter operated leg, a valgus coronal alignment, and excessive patellar tilt increased AKP risk., Conclusions: The results suggest that global alignment, including sagittal, coronal, and axial alignment, is relevant in predicting AKP after TKA. Purpose: The aim of this study is to evaluate the possible benefits of using video consent in the preoperative ureteroscopy (URS) consent process. Material and Methods: Prospective randomized trials took place at two Italian tertiary-care centers from March 2022 to September 2022. Patients were randomly assigned to two groups: Group A (standard verbal/written informed consent) and Group B (informed consent supported by video). We investigated the impact of both types of informed consent on patient anxiety levels using the Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) questionnaire both pre- and post-consent. In addition, using the Visual Analogue Scale, analysis of the effect of informed consent on postoperative pain and the number of calls for assistance during hospitalization as secondary outcomes was done. To assess the satisfaction level related to the whole process, patients were asked to rate their experience on a scale of 1-10, with 1 indicating "not satisfied" and 10 indicating "completely satisfied." Results: Overall, 166 patients were randomized 1:1 in each group. The multivariable regression model demonstrated that video-assisted informed consent significantly increased the difference between post- and pre-consent STAI with a reduced level of anxiety. The video-assisted informed consent significantly predicted the number of assistance calls during hospitalization. Conclusions: Video consent for ureteroscopies is a valid tool to improve procedure awareness and satisfaction. Video consent is able to reduce procedure-related patient anxiety and postoperative assistance calls, thus proving to be useful in obtaining better-informed consent for endourological procedures.
