1. Information Resource Selection of Undergraduate Students in Academic Search Tasks

Abstract

Introduction: This study aims to investigate the selection of information sources and to identify factors associated with the resource selection of undergraduate students for academic search tasks. Also, user perceptions of some factors, such as credibility, usefulness, accessibility and familiarity, were examined to classify resources by their characteristics. Method: A self-generated diary method was employed with 233 undergraduate students in achieving their academic search tasks. Analysis: The collected diary data were analysed both qualitatively and quantitatively. A qualitative analysis was used to explore factors influencing resource selection, while a quantitative analysis was used for investigating the characteristics of resources. Results: This study reaffirmed recent information usage trends that online sources are preferred by university students in their academic searches. This study identified twenty nine factors in four different dimensions, including information type, resource feature, search strategy, and interaction with others. Moreover, perceptions of users were investigated quantitatively focusing on usefulness, credibility, accessibility, familiarity with source, satisfaction, and intention of continuous use. Conclusions: Multiple factors are influencing the resource selection of undergraduate students and those factors vary in different types of sources in academic search tasks. The findings of the study suggest some insights in how to guide undergraduates to choose better information resources for their academic search tasks. (Contains 9 tables and 2 figures.)

Abstract

Multivariate regression models for real-time coastal air quality forecasting were suggested from 18 to 27 March 2015, with a total of 15 kinds of hourly input data (three-hours-earlier data of PM and gas with meteorological parameters from Kangnung (Korea), associated with two-days-earlier data of PM and gas from Beijing (China)). Multiple correlation coefficients between the predicted and measured PM10, PM2.5, NO2, SO2, CO and O3 concentrations were 0.957, 0.906, 0.886, 0.795, 0.864 and 0.932 before the yellow sand event at Kangnung, 0.936, 0.982, 0.866, 0.917, 0.887 and 0.916 during the event and 0.919, 0.945, 0.902, 0.857, 0.887 and 0.892 after the event. As the significance levels (p) from multi-regression analyses were less than 0.001, all correlation coefficients were very significant. Partial correlation coefficients presenting the contribution of 15 input variables to 6 output variables using the models were presented for the three periods in detail. Scatter plots and their hourly distributions between the predicted and measured values showed the quite good accuracy of the modeling performance for the current time forecasting of six output values and their high applicability. Abstract

Psychiatric nursing care plans include the narratives describing the defense mechanisms exhibited by the patients. These narratives form the basis for generating psychodynamic analysis, which is one of the key diagnosis outcomes about the patients. However, it is fairly difficult for the novice nurses to correctly identify the type of defense mechanism based on the observations that they made while caring for the patients. One of the main reasons for the high error rate is the lack of uniform terminology. That is, inconsistencies in the definitions and conceptualizations of defenses. Furthermore, there is lack of sufficient examples showing the wide variety of cases from which the novice nurses to learn. We developed a prototype text discourse analysis system, which assigns one or more text discourse categories to each clause in the defense mechanism narratives. The initial evaluation of the prototype system resulted in correctly identifying 85% of the defense mechanisms in the test data set. The output from the text discourse analysis system is fed into a database to augment the definition of the defense mechanisms and also to be used as a learning tool for the novice nurses. Abstract

Community Health Post workers are mainly registered nurses. They provide first-level primary health care to the numerous underserved rural communities in Korea. The primary goal of our project is to provide technological foundation for the community health practitioners to form a virtual community that collaboratively solves problems and learns to improve their patient caring and treatment skills. The main enabling technology is a collaboratively maintained knowledge management system, which assists the community health practitioners to make appropriate diagnoses and also to determine the corresponding expected outcomes and interventions to perform given the patient's symptoms. The knowledge management system includes a knowledge base, which is converted from the standardized nursing process guidelines. In addition, the knowledge management system is also used as a case retrieval system so that the community health practitioners can compare the current case in progress with the similar prior cases. Abstract

Large scale information retrieval systems need to refine the flow of documents which will receive further fine-grain analysis to those documents with a high potential for relevance to their respective users. This paper reports on research we have conducted into the usefulness of semantic codes from a machine readable dictionary for filtering large sets of incoming documents for their broad subject appropriateness to a topic of interest. The Subject Field Coder produces a summary-level semantic representation of a text's contents by tagging each word in the document with the appropriate, disambiguated Subject Field Code (SFC). The within-document SFCs are normalized to produce a vector of the SFCs representing that document's contents. Queries are likewise represented as SFC vectors and then compared to SFC vectors of incoming documents, which are then ranked according to similarity to the query SFC vector. Only those documents whose SFC vectors exhibit a predetermined degree of similarity to the query SFC vector are passed to later system components for more refined representation and matching. The assignment of SFCs is fully automatic, efficient and has been empirically tested as a reasonable approach for ranking documents from a very large incoming flow of documents.
