5. Global spread of English: processes of change

Abstract

This chapter looks at both standard and non-standard varieties of English. Within standard English, it considers varieties of English as a first language (ENL) and as an institutionalised second language (ESL). The chapter outlines research on the global spread of English with a focus on the following processes of change: dialect and language contact, isolation, globalization vs. localization. Dialect contact is discussed as a major force in the development of ENL varieties in the US, Canada, New Zealand and Australia. The second half of the twentieth and the beginning of the twenty-first century are characterized by large-scale migration to ENL countries, not only from the former colonies of Britain and the US but also from non-English speaking parts of the world. A discussion of dialect contact thus also needs to take into account the possibility of secondary dialect contact, i.e. the influence of ESL varieties and the use of English as a foreign language on ENL varieties of English. An obvious outcome of language contact are the various pidgins and English-based creoles. However, language contact is also an important aspect of nativization and thus the development of ESL varieties in India, Singapore and Africa. During earlier periods in the global spread of English, the (relative) isolation of speakers is likely to have lead to the divergence of the different regional Englishes while the more recent re-establishment of contact especially via mass media has, to some extent, lead to a re-convergence of the New Englishes. Language and dialect contact via the mass media lead to globalization of features whereas local identity construction would be a force that leads to the development of more localized norms of language use. The discussion of these two competing factors includes the question as to how diffusion of change may work on a global scale and how globalization relates to supra-regionalization.

18. [Medieval andrology and the pseudo-galenic De spermate].

Abstract

The pseudo-Galenic De spermate, a theoretical treatise on reproduction that was probably translated into Latin in the early Salernitan period and remained influential throughout the Middle Ages, provides valuable information about medieval ideas concerning the male reproductive system. The emphasis is on reproductive physiology. The text describes semen as a fluid that is originally drawn from the four bodily humours, primarily blood, is turned into sperm by coction in specific veins and arteries, and passes through the man's body along spermatic vessels, first ascending to the head and from there desending through particular organs to the testicles, where it is finally made complete for emission. The text also contains a description of male reproductive anatomy, including the internal structure of the testicles. Male reproductive pathology is not explored in any detail in this theoretical account, but a few potential problems in reproductive funtioning are mentioned in the discussion of physiological processes.

19. Vernacularisation of medical writing in English: a corpus-based study of scholasticism.

Abstract

This article proposes a model for linguistic analysis of scientific thought-styles, combining quantitative and qualitative analyses in the variationist frame and focusing on writings of the scholastic period. The first part of the article considers factors that led to the vernacularisation of scientific writings in fifteenth-century England and the sources, underlying traditions and audiences of these writings. The empirical part focuses on two features typical of scholasticism: references to authorities and the use of prescriptive phrases. The results show statistical differences between varieties of writing. A close semantic analysis reveals a pattern which is related to the underlying layers of tradition and to the sociohistorical background of the texts. The material comes from a computer-readable Corpus of Early English Medical Writing 1375-1750, which the authors are compiling at the University of Helsinki.
