Monochromatic gamma-ray signals constitute a potential smoking gun signature for annihilating or decaying dark matter particles that could relatively easily be distinguished from astrophysical or instrumental backgrounds. We provide an updated assessment of the sensitivity of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) to such signals, based on observations of the Galactic centre region as well as of selected dwarf spheroidal galaxies. We find that current limits and detection prospects for dark matter masses above 300 GeV will be significantly improved, by up to an order of magnitude in the multi-TeV range. This demonstrates that CTA will set a new standard for gamma-ray astronomy also in this respect, as the world's largest and most sensitive high-energy gamma-ray observatory, in particular due to its exquisite energy resolution at TeV energies and the adopted observational strategy focussing on regions with large dark matter densities. Throughout our analysis, we use up-to-date instrument response functions, and we thoroughly model the effect of instrumental systematic uncertainties in our statistical treatment. The Extreme Universe Space Observatory on a Super Pressure Balloon 1 (EUSO-SPB1) was launched in 2017 April from Wanaka, New Zealand. The plan of this mission of opportunity on a NASA super pressure balloon test flight was to circle the southern hemisphere. The primary scientific goal was to make the first observations of ultra-high-energy cosmic-ray extensive air showers (EASs) by looking down on the atmosphere with an ultraviolet (UV) fluorescence telescope from suborbital altitude (33~km). After 12~days and 4~hours aloft, the flight was terminated prematurely in the Pacific Ocean. Before the flight, the instrument was tested extensively in the West Desert of Utah, USA, with UV point sources and lasers. The test results indicated that the instrument had sensitivity to EASs of approximately 3 EeV. Simulations of the telescope system, telescope on time, and realized flight trajectory predicted an observation of about 1 event assuming clear sky conditions. The effects of high clouds were estimated to reduce this value by approximately a factor of 2. A manual search and a machine-learning-based search did not find any EAS signals in these data. JEM--EUSO is an international program for the development of space-based Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Ray observatories. The program consists of a series of missions which are either under development or in the data analysis phase. All instruments are based on a wide-field-of-view telescope, which operates in the near-UV range, designed to detect the fluorescence light emitted by extensive air showers in the atmosphere. We describe the simulation software ESAFin the framework of the JEM--EUSO program and explain the physical assumptions used. We present here the implementation of the JEM--EUSO, POEMMA, K--EUSO, TUS, Mini--EUSO, EUSO--SPB1 and EUSO--TA configurations in ESAF. For the first time ESAF simulation outputs are compared with experimental data.

13. Certification of quantum state functions under partial information

Convex functions of quantum states play a key role in quantum physics, with examples ranging from Bell inequalities to von Neumann entropy. However, in experimental scenarios, direct measurements of these functions are often impractical. We address this issue by introducing two methods for determining rigorous confidence bounds for convex functions based on informationally incomplete measurements. Our approach outperforms existing protocols by providing tighter bounds for a fixed confidence level and number of measurements. We evaluate the performance of our methods using both numerical and experimental data. Our findings demonstrate the efficacy of our approach, paving the way for improved quantum state certification in real-world applications., Comment: Version Accepted in Quantum

Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena - Abstract
The detection of gravitational waves from a binary neutron star merger by Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo (GW170817), along with the discovery of the electromagnetic counterparts of this gravitational wave event, ushered in a new era of multimessenger astronomy, providing the first direct evidence that BNS mergers are progenitors of short gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). Such events may also produce very-high-energy (VHE, > 100GeV) photons which have yet to be detected in coincidence with a gravitational wave signal. The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is a next-generation VHE observatory which aims to be indispensable in this search, with an unparalleled sensitivity and ability to slew anywhere on the sky within a few tens of seconds. New observing modes and follow-up strategies are being developed for CTA to rapidly cover localization areas of gravitational wave events that are typically larger than the CTA field of view. This work will evaluate and provide estimations on the expected number of of gravitational wave events that will be observable with CTA, considering both on- and off-axis emission. Cavitation in water only, no matter whether hydrodynamic or acoustic, is a zero-waste circular economy process to convert industrial citrus processing waste into high-performance polysaccharides in high demand in a single-step at room temperature and ambient pressure using a modest amount of electricity as the only energy input. Following previous reports in which we used hydrodynamic cavitation, we now use an industrial acoustic sonicator to demonstrate the general viability of cavitation to convert biowaste residue of the industrial squeezing of pigmented sweet orange (Citrus sinensis) into highly bioactive “IntegroPectin” pectin and micronized cellulose “CytroCell”. From biomedicine through advanced composite membranes, said biomaterials hold great applicative potential. We conclude discussing the economic and technical feasibility of industrial implementation of the “CytroCav” process.

20. Early Mathematical Performance of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Toddlers in Family-Centred Early Intervention Programmes

Research indicates that establishing a strong foundation in early mathematics is essential for later academic learning. Previous research with students who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) has shown varying differences in the performance and achievement when compared to typically hearing (TH) students. While the majority of research in this area has been conducted in the United States, studies in other countries suggest that these differences may be global. The present study investigated the early mathematics abilities of 3-year-old DHH children enrolled in family-centred early intervention in the Netherlands. Fifty-three DHH and TH children were given an adapted version of the Early Mathematics Performance Diagnostic. Results showed that on average, the DHH and the TH children performed similarly on all domains, except for Measurement. Likewise, both groups showed similar mathematical knowledge in most early mathematics tasks measuring sub-concepts such as counting objects, shape matching, or measuring weight. Differences were identified in some basic tasks measuring the sub-concepts (e.g. rote counting, measuring time, solving puzzles), however, not on the more advanced tasks measuring these same sub-concepts. These findings are important for parents, teachers, and early interventionists.

Abstract Background Thyroid diseases are one of the most common health problems worldwide. Although they represent a necessary step in order to perform thyroidectomy, hyperextension of the neck can potentially increase postoperative pain. The aim of this study is to determine a correlation between the degree of neck hyperextension on the operative table and the postoperative pain in patients undergoing open thyroidectomy. Methods Patients were prospectively enrolled from the cohort of patients operated at the Endocrine Surgery Unit of the University Hospital of Pisa, between May and July 2021. Both of patients who underwent total thyroidectomy or hemi-thyroidectomy were recruited. The following data were analysed in order to find a correlation with postoperative pain at 24 h: age, gender, type of surgery, BMI, operative time, and degree of neck extension. Results Overall, 195 patients were enrolled. Inspired by the recent advancements in understanding the binding mode of sulfonylurea-based NLRP3 inhibitors to the NLRP3 sensor protein, we developed new NLRP3 inhibitors by replacing the central sulfonylurea moiety with different heterocycles. Computational studies evidenced that some of the designed compounds were able to maintain important interaction within the NACHT domain of the target protein similarly to the most active sulfonylurea-based NLRP3 inhibitors. Among the studied compounds, the 1,3,4-oxadiazol-2-one derivative 5 (INF200) showed the most promising results being able to prevent NLRP3-dependent pyroptosis triggered by LPS/ATP and LPS/MSU by 66.3 +/- 6.6% and 61.6 +/- 11.5% and to reduce IL-1\b{eta} release (35.5 +/- 8.8 % {\mu}M) at 10 {\mu}M in human macrophages. The selected compound INF200 (20 mg/kg/day) was then tested in an in vivo rat model of high-fat diet (HFD)-induced metaflammation to evaluate its beneficial cardiometabolic effects. INF200 significantly counteracted HFD-dependent "anthropometric" changes, improved glucose and lipid profiles, and attenuated systemic inflammation and biomarkers of cardiac dysfunction (particularly BNP). Hemodynamic evaluation on Langendorff model indicate that INF200 limited myocardial damage-dependent ischemia/reperfusion injury (IRI) by improving post-ischemic systolic recovery and attenuating cardiac contracture, infarct size, and LDH release, thus reversing the exacerbation of obesity-associated damage. Mechanistically, in post-ischemic hearts, IFN200 reduced IRI-dependent NLRP3 activation, inflammation, and oxidative stress. These results highlight the potential of the novel NLRP3 inhibitor, INF200, and its ability to reverse the unfavorable cardio-metabolic dysfunction associated with obesity.

Galaxy clusters are expected to be dark matter (DM) reservoirs and storage rooms for the cosmic-ray protons (CRp) that accumulate along the cluster's formation history. Accordingly, they are excellent targets to search for signals of DM annihilation and decay at gamma-ray energies and are predicted to be sources of large-scale gamma-ray emission due to hadronic interactions in the intracluster medium. We estimate the sensitivity of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) to detect diffuse gamma-ray emission from the Perseus galaxy cluster. We perform a detailed spatial and spectral modelling of the expected signal for the DM and the CRp components. For each, we compute the expected CTA sensitivity. The observing strategy of Perseus is also discussed. In the absence of a diffuse signal (non-detection), CTA should constrain the CRp to thermal energy ratio within the radius $R_{500}$ down to about $X_{500}<3\times 10^{-3}$, for a spatial CRp distribution that follows the thermal gas and a CRp spectral index $\alpha_{\rm CRp}=2.3$. Under the optimistic assumption of a pure hadronic origin of the Perseus radio mini-halo and depending on the assumed magnetic field profile, CTA should measure $\alpha_{\rm CRp}$ down to about $\Delta\alpha_{\rm CRp}\simeq 0.1$ and the CRp spatial distribution with 10% precision. Regarding DM, CTA should improve the current ground-based gamma-ray DM limits from clusters observations on the velocity-averaged annihilation cross-section by a factor of up to $\sim 5$, depending on the modelling of DM halo substructure. In the case of decay of DM particles, CTA will explore a new region of the parameter space, reaching models with $\tau_{\chi}>10^{27}$s for DM masses above 1 TeV. These constraints will provide unprecedented sensitivity to the physics of both CRp acceleration and transport at cluster scale and to TeV DM particle models, especially in the decay scenario., Comment: 93 pages (including author list, appendix and references), 143 figures. Abstract Defining the molecular mechanisms underlying cardiac resilience is crucial to find effective approaches to protect the heart. A physiologic level of ROS is produced in the heart by fatty acid oxidation, but stressful events can boost ROS and cause mitochondrial dysfunction and cardiac functional impairment. Melusin is a muscle specific chaperone required for myocardial compensatory remodeling during stress. Here we report that Melusin localizes in mitochondria where it binds the mitochondrial trifunctional protein, a key enzyme in fatty acid oxidation, and decreases it activity. Studying both mice and human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes, we found that Melusin reduces lipid oxidation in the myocardium and limits ROS generation in steady state and during pressure overload and doxorubicin treatment, preventing mitochondrial dysfunction. Accordingly, the treatment with the lipid oxidation inhibitor Trimetazidine concomitantly with stressful stimuli limits ROS accumulation and prevents long-term heart dysfunction. These findings disclose a physiologic mechanism of metabolic regulation in the heart and demonstrate that a timely restriction of lipid metabolism represents a potential therapeutic strategy to improve cardiac resilience to stress.

Abstract Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a demyelinating and neurodegenerative disease due to an autoimmune chronic inflammatory response, yet the etiology is currently not completely understood. It is already known that physical activity plays an essential role in improving quality of life, especially in neuropathological conditions. The study was aimed to investigate the possible benefits of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) in bone and lipid metabolism markers, and neuromotor abilities in MS patients. 130 participants were recruited; 16 subjects with MS met the inclusion criteria and were included in the data analysis. The patients were randomly assigned to two groups: a Control group (CG) (34.88 ± 4.45 yrs) that didn’t perform any physical activity and the Exercise group (EG) (36.20 ± 7.80 yrs) that performed HIIT protocol. The training program was conducted remotely by a kinesiologist. It was performed three times a week for 8 weeks. At the beginning (T0) and the end of the study (T1) physical function tests, bone remodelling markers, and lipid markers analyses were performed. After 8 weeks of training the wall squat (s) (T0 = 27.18 ± 4.21; T1 = 41.68 ± 5.38, p ≤ 0.01) and Time Up and Go test (s) (T0 = 7.65 ± 0.43; T1 = 6.34 ± 0.38 p ≤ 0.01) performances improved; lipid markers analysis showed a decrease in Total (mg/dl) (T0 = 187.22 ± 15.73; T1 = 173.44 ± 13.03, p ≤ 0.05) and LDL (mg/dl) (T0 = 108 ± 21.08; T1 = 95.02 ± 17.99, p

We study the prospects for detection of continuous gravitational signals from "normal" Galactic neutron stars, i.e. non-recycled ones. We use a synthetic population generated by evolving stellar remnants in time, according to several models. We consider the most recent constraints set by all-sky searches for continuous gravitational waves and use them for our detectability criteria. We discuss detection prospects for the current and the next generation of gravitational wave detectors. We find that neutron stars whose ellipticity is solely caused by magnetic deformations cannot produce any detectable signal, not even by 3rd-generation detectors. Currently detectable sources all have $B\lesssim10^{12}$ G and deformations not solely due to the magnetic field. For these in fact we find that the larger the magnetic field is, the larger is the ellipticity required for the signal to be detectable and this ellipticity is well above the value induced by the magnetic field. Third-generation detectors as the Einstein Telescope and Cosmic Explorer will be able to detect up to $\approx 250$ more sources than current detectors. We briefly treat the case of recycled neutron stars, with a simplified model. We find that continuous gravitational waves from these objects will likely remain elusive to detection by current detectors but should be detectable with the next generation of detectors.

This study investigates the performance of flax fiber and epoxy resin composites, focusing on fatigue testing, which is scarcely reported in the literature. Fatigue behavior is evaluated under full reverse bending loading conditions: R = −1. Apart of the definition of the classic S-N curve, the analysis deeply investigated the evolution of the hysteresis leaf generated during each cycle over the entire fatigue life. This approach allows evaluating interesting parameters such as the evolution of the loss factor and the apparent modulus over life, being these informations fundamental for practical application of natural-fiber composites in engineering applications.

Despite promise of its supplementation as both monotherapy and add-on treatment in autism spectrum disorder (ASD), the biobehavioral effects of Palmitoylethanolamide (PEA) in autistic adults have never been explored so far. We discussed the cases of two autistic adults with different degrees of severity (level 1 and level 2) presenting with symptoms of psychic distress, who were treated with ultramicronized-PEA (um-PEA) 600 mg/day monotherapy for a sustained period of 4 months. The level 1 autistic patient showed improved depressive symptoms and social engagement at a 12-week follow-up, in parallel to a tendency toward reduced inflammatory response and enhanced endocannabinoid (eCB) signaling, partially relapsing after um-PEA discontinuation at four months. Opposedly, the level 2 autistic patient exhibited a generally stable psychosocial functioning for the initial 12 weeks, consistent with basically unchanged immune and eCBs levels, abruptly deteriorating and leading to antipsychotic initiation afterwards. No significant side effects were reported in both cases during the observation period. The two cases suggest that um-PEA could be an effective option for the treatment of psychic distress in level 1 autistic adults, warranting further investigation of its age- and level-specificity and of the biological underpinnings of its therapeutic effect in ASD.

Objective: The objective of this study was to determine regional variation in need for mental health care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adults (18+ years). Methods: Three Australian Indigenous health surveys were analysed, and prevalence rates of high/very high psychological distress (as per the Kessler-5 tool) by the Index of Relative Socio-economic Disadvantage were computed and combined via meta-analysis. These estimates were applied to census population data to estimate regional needs and summed to geographic planning regions. Final estimates were assessed for face validity by comparing with other existing estimates of mental health need. Results: The Index of Relative Socioeconomic Disadvantage had a dose–response relationship with high/very high psychological distress, whereby the more disadvantaged an area, the greater the levels of reported distress. This methodology resulted in varying levels of need within South East Queensland. Conclusions: The approach was found to have good face validity and provides a data-driven method to determine relative levels of need. Implications for Public Health: To ensure equity of mental health service provision, planners should account for variation in levels of need within a catchment. This method may be used throughout Australia to determine regional variation in need for care where other data are lacking to ensure evidence-based investment planning decisions at the local level.

Abstract The overexpression of the ecotropic viral integration site-1 gene (EVI1/MECOM) marks the most lethal acute myeloid leukemia (AML) subgroup carrying chromosome 3q26 abnormalities. By taking advantage of the intersectionality of high-throughput cell-based and gene expression screens selective and pan-histone deacetylase inhibitors (HDACis) emerge as potent repressors of EVI1. To understand the mechanism driving on-target anti-leukemia activity of this compound class, here we dissect the expression dynamics of the bone marrow leukemia cells of patients treated with HDACi and reconstitute the EVI1 chromatin-associated co-transcriptional complex merging on the role of proliferation-associated 2G4 (PA2G4) protein. PA2G4 overexpression rescues AML cells from the inhibitory effects of HDACis, while genetic and small molecule inhibition of PA2G4 abrogates EVI1 in 3q26 AML cells, including in patient-derived leukemia xenografts. This study positions PA2G4 at the crosstalk of the EVI1 leukemogenic signal for developing new therapeutics and urges the use of HDACis-based combination therapies in patients with 3q26 AML.

The ASTRI Mini-Array (MA) is an INAF project to build and operate a facility to study astronomical sources emitting at very high-energy in the TeV spectral band. The ASTRI MA consists of a group of nine innovative Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. The telescopes will be installed at the Teide Astronomical Observatory of the Instituto de Astrofisica de Canarias (IAC) in Tenerife (Canary Islands, Spain) on the basis of a host agreement with INAF. The ASTRI (Astrofisica con Specchi a Tecnologia Replicante Italiana) Mini-Array will be composed of nine imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes at the Observatorio del Teide site. The array will be best suited for astrophysical observations in the 0.3-200 TeV range with an angular resolution of few arc-minutes and an energy resolution of 10-15\%. A core-science programme in the first four years will be devoted to a limited number of key targets, addressing the most important open scientific questions in the very-high energy domain. At the same time, thanks to a wide field of view of about 10 degrees, ASTRI Mini-Array will observe many additional field sources, which will constitute the basis for the long-term observatory programme that will eventually cover all the accessible sky. In this paper, we review different astrophysical Galactic environments, e.g. pulsar wind nebulae, supernova remnants, and gamma-ray binaries, and show the results from a set of ASTRI Mini-Array simulations of some of these field sources made to highlight the expected performance of the array (even at large offset angles) and the important additional observatory science that will complement the core-science program., Comment: Accepted for publication in Journal of High-Energy Astrophysics

The ASTRI (Astrofisica con Specchi a Tecnologia Replicante Italiana) Project led by the Italian National Institute for Astrophysics (INAF) is developing and will deploy at the Observatorio del Teide a mini-array (ASTRI Mini-Array) composed of nine telescopes similar to the small-size dual-mirror Schwarzschild-Couder telescope (ASTRI-Horn) currently operating on the slopes of Mt. Etna in Sicily. The ASTRI Mini-Array will surpass the current Cherenkov telescope array differential sensitivity above a few tera-electronvolt (TeV), extending the energy band well above hundreds of TeV. This will allow us to explore a new window of the electromagnetic spectrum, by convolving the sensitivity performance with excellent angular and energy resolution figures. The ASTRI Mini-Array is a next-generation system of nine imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes that is going to be built at the Observatorio del Teide site. After a first phase, in which the instrument will be operated as an experiment prioritizing a schedule of primary science cases, an observatory phase is foreseen in which other significant targets will be pointed. We focus on the observational feasibility of extragalactic sources and on astrophysical processes that best complement and expand the ASTRI Mini-Array core science, presenting the most relevant examples that are at reach of detection over long-term time scales and whose observation can provide breakthrough achievements in the very-high energy extragalactic science. Such examples cover a wide range of $\gamma$-ray emitters, including the study of AGN low states in the multi-TeV energy range, the possible detection of Seyfert galaxies with long exposures and the searches of dark matter lines above 10 TeV. 40. Efficacy of therapeutic intervention with NanoBEO to manage agitation and pain in patients suffering from severe dementia: a pilot clinical trial

BackgroundAn estimated 57.4 million people live with dementia worldwide, with the social burden of the disease steadily growing. Despite the approval of lecanemab and ongoing trials, there is still a lack of effective and safe treatments for behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD), which affect 99% of patients. Agitation is one of the most disabling BPSD, with a cross-sectional prevalence of ≥50% in nursing homes, and refers to help-seeking behavior in response to various sources of discomfort, among which pain is a crucial component.MethodsThis pilot phase of the BRAINAID (NCT04321889) trial aimed to assess the effectiveness of the patented nanotechnological device NanoBEO in older (≥65 years) people with severe dementia. This randomized placebo-controlled trial, with quadruple masking that involved all operators and participants, followed the SPIRIT and CONSORT statements. A total of 29 patients completed the trial. The patients were randomly allocated in a 1:1 ratio to the NanoBEO or placebo group, and the corresponding product was applied on both arms once daily for 4 weeks, with a 4-week follow-up period. The primary endpoint was efficacy against agitation. The secondary endpoints were efficacy against agitation at follow-up and efficacy against pain. Any adverse events were reported, and biochemical analyses were performed.ResultsThe NanoBEO intervention reduced the frequency (28%) and level of disruptiveness of agitated behaviors. The effect on frequency was statistically significant after 2 weeks of treatment. The efficacy of NanoBEO on agitated behaviors lasted for the entire 4-week treatment period. No additional psychotropic drugs were prescribed throughout the study duration. The results after 1 week of treatment demonstrated that NanoBEO had statistically significant analgesic efficacy (45.46% improvement in pain intensity). The treatment was well tolerated.DiscussionThis trial investigated the efficacy of NanoBEO therapy in managing agitation and pain in dementia. No need for rescue medications was recorded, strengthening the efficacy of NanoBEO in prolonged therapy for advanced-stage dementia and the usefulness of the intervention in the deprescription of potentially harmful drugs. This study provided a robust rationale for the application of NanoBEO in a subsequent large-scale pivotal trial to allow clinical translation of the product.Clinical Trial Registration:ClinicalTrials.gov, identifier NCT04321889.

Chemistry is a reproducible science whose pillars - synthesis and analysis - actually comprise a huge collection of highly reproducible experimental methods to synthesize and analyze substances. The historical development of chemistry, furthermore, shows that reproducibility of methods has been the companion of novelty and creative innovation. The “publish or perish” principle dominating global academia since over two decades, however, intrinsically contributes to the publication of non-reproducible research outcomes also in chemistry. A study on reproducibility of chemistry research seems therefore timely, especially now that chemists are slowly but inevitably adopting open science and its tools such as the preprint, open access, and data sharing. We conclude presenting three simple guidelines for enhanced publication of research findings in chemistry.

- Abstract
Limited studies exist that connect using signed language with mathematics performance of deaf and hard of hearing children. In the present study, the authors examined 257 participants and compared their results on the Northwest Evaluation Association: Measures of Academic Progress (NWEA MAP) to their results on an assessment of American Sign Language (ASL) skills. It was found that better ASL skills tended to result in better MAP performance. These results are moderated by factors such as age, gender, parental hearing status, and learning disability identification.

Purpose Sailing is a water sport comprising several disciplines distinguished by the type of boat and number of crew. The sailor must constantly accommodate the movement of the hull according to the weather conditions. The study aims to provide targeted guidance regarding training and nutrition for sailor athletes. Methods Complete and effective training requires a synergistic combination of sport-specific elements and strategies designed to improve overall strength. Extensive discussion has been made of the types of workouts aimed at improving performance and preventing injury. Results Our research findings revealed that even though sailors’ training considers the development of strength, endurance, speed, balance, and coordination, which are necessary to counteract the continuous adaptations of posture to weather conditions, these athletes are exposed to the risk of injuries that predominantly affect the knee and lower back. Sailing is an aerobic/ anaerobic sport in which there are no explicit suggestions regarding the nutritional aspect and supplementation and what their contribution could be in improving performance. Conclusions We hypothesise that targeted training paths for sailing athletes and personalisation of nutritional suggestions by timing the intake of macro- and micronutrients as well as taking specific supplements, can reduce the risk of injury and better impact recovery and performance in this discipline.

RSV infection occurs in almost all the infants before the second year of life with variable clinical severity, often requiring medical assistance. Background: Despite the well-known efficacy of anti-COVID-19 vaccines in preventing morbidity and mortality, several vaccinated individuals are diagnosed with SARS-CoV-2 breakthrough infection, which might require hospitalisation. This multicentre, observational, and retrospective study aimed to investigate the clinical characteristics and outcomes of vaccinated vs. non-vaccinated patients, both hospitalised with SARS-CoV-2 infection in 3 major hospitals in Northern Italy. Methods: Data collection was retrospective, and paper and electronic medical records of adult patients with a diagnosed SARS-CoV-2 infection were pseudo-anonymised and analysed. Vaccinated and non-vaccinated individuals were manually paired, using a predetermined matching criterion (similar age, gender, and date of hospitalisation). Demographic, clinical, treatment, and outcome data were compared between groups differing by vaccination status using Pearson’s Chi-square and Mann-Whitney tests. Moreover, multiple logistic regression analyses were performed to assess the impact of vaccination status on ICU admission or intra-hospital mortality. Results: Data from 360 patients were collected. Vaccinated patients presented with a higher prevalence of relevant comorbidities, like kidney replacement therapy or haematological malignancy, despite a milder clinical presentation at the first evaluation. Non-vaccinated patients required intensive care more often than their vaccinated counterparts (8.8% vs. 1.7%, p = 0.002). Contrariwise, no difference in intra-hospital mortality was observed between the two groups (19% vs. 20%, p = 0.853). These results were confirmed by multivariable logistic regressions, which showed that vaccination was significantly associated with decreased risk of ICU admission (aOR=0.172, 95%CI: 0.039–0.542, p = 0.007), but not of intra-hospital mortality (aOR=0.996, 95%CI: 0.582–1.703, p = 0.987). Conclusions: This study provides real-world data on vaccinated patients hospitalised with COVID-19 in Northern Italy. Our results suggest that COVID-19 vaccination has a protective role in individuals with higher risk profiles, especially regarding the need for ICU admission. These findings contribute to our understanding of SARS-CoV-2 infection outcomes among vaccinated individuals and emphasise the importance of vaccination in preventing severe disease, particularly in those countries with lower first-booster uptake rates.

Atopic dermatitis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease. The treatment plays an important role in influencing the patients’ quality of life. The basic management consists of appropriate skin cleansing, including bathing and eventually using bathing additives. Recommendations regarding frequency and duration of bathing, water temperature and usefulness of bathing additives are widely different, often leading to confusion among patients. This review aims to give insights into the best bathing practices and the use of bathing additives in atopic dermatitis in children. Several bathing additives, including bleach baths, commercial baby cleansers, bath baby oils and bath salt, appear to be promising adjunctive therapies for atopic dermatitis due to their anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, anti-pruritus and skin barrier repair properties through different mechanisms of action. However, their efficacy and safety are not fully understood in some cases. The usefulness of other bath additives, such as acidic and more natural substances (green tea extracts, pine tar, sodium bicarbonate), is still under investigation. Further studies are needed to determine their optimal use to achieve clinical benefit safely.

Interstitial lung diseases (ILDs) encompass a heterogeneous group of over 200 disorders that require individualized treatment. Antifibrotic agents, such as nintedanib and pirfenidone, have remarkably revolutionized the treatment landscape of patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). Moreover, the approval of nintedanib has also expanded the therapeutic options for patients with progressive pulmonary fibrosis other than IPF. However, despite recent advances, current therapeutic strategies based on antifibrotic agents and/or immunomodulation are associated with non-negligible side effects. Therefore, several studies have explored the inhalation route aiming to spread higher local concentrations while limiting systemic toxicity. In this review, we examined the currently available literature about preclinical and clinical studies testing the efficacy and safety of inhalation-based antifibrotics, immunomodulatory agents, antioxidants, mucolytics, bronchodilators, and vasodilator agents in ILDs.
