Abstract

The last few years have seen the emergence of different initiatives designed to promote the biodiversification of agroecosystems as a counterpoint to the global expansion of homogenized industrial agriculture. In Brazil, two food procurement programs demonstrate the potential to promote discussions related to this agroecological transition: the National School Meal Program (Programa Nacional de Alimenta&ccedil, &atilde, o Escolar, PNAE) and the Food Procurement Program (Programa de Aquisi&ccedil, o de Alimentos, PAA). The objectives of this paper are to analyze: (a) how these procurement programs currently integrate agrobiodiversity (crops and cropping systems) according to the local context, (b) the main challenges that key stakeholders perceive for the adoption of biodiverse systems, and (c) the extent to which the key stakeholders involved in these programs associate agrobiodiversity with the provision of ecosystem services. We carried out this research in 2017 in two contrasting municipalities in the eastern part of the Brazilian Amazon, Paragominas and Irituia. Our research shows that these programs have included up to 42 species in Irituia and 32 species in Paragominas. Perennial crop species are the most common type of culture in Irituia (up to 50%), while vegetables are the most common in Paragominas (up to 47%). Although in both municipalities stakeholders identify a large number of ecosystem services (up to 17), services mentioned in Irituia were more closely related to agrobiodiversity. Stakeholders indirectly associated with the programs have a broader view of ecosystem services. We conclude that these procurement programs can be useful tools to promote the biodiversification of local production systems, but their potential may depend on involving institutions not directly associated with their administration. Additionally, despite the observed differences in production context, providing more ecosystem services appears to be a compelling motivation for promoting changes in agroecosystems.

6. Problemshed or watershed? Participatory modeling towards IWRM in North Ghana

Abstract

This paper is a reflexive analysis of a three-year participatory water research project conducted in the Upper East Region (UER) of Ghana, whose explicit objective was to initiate a multi-level dialogue to support the national Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) policy framework. The transdisciplinary team adopted the Companion Modeling approach (ComMod), using role-playing games and a computerized agent-based model to support the identification of a problemshed centered on issues of river bank cultivation, erosion, and flooding, and initiate a multi-level dialogue on ways that this problemshed could be tackled. On the basis of this experience, we identify three key criteria for transdisciplinary research to support innovative water governance: (1) the iterative adaptation of tools and facilitation techniques based on feedback from participants; (2) a common understanding of the objectives pursued and the approach used among researchers, who need to explicit their posture, and crucially; (3) the co-identification of a problemshed that diverse stakeholders are interested in tackling. Finally, we argue that the context in which research is funded and conducted in the development sector constitutes a challenge for researchers to be "participants like any other" in the projects they coordinate, which constitutes a barrier to true transdisciplinarity.

Byline: Patrick d|Aquino, Christophe Le Page, Francois Bousquet, Alassane Bah The increasing diversity of stakeholders, who often hold differing and conflicting land-use perceptions and strategies, underlines the growing need for innovative methods and tools to support a negotiation process aimed at an enhanced and more decentralised land-use management policy. Land-use management is a complex issue and thus presents an irreducible uncertainty that entails a variety of legitimate perspectives. Due to this complexity, the decision-making process should be incremental, iterative and continuous. This means that the acts of decision making will always be imperfect but will move progressively closer towards a shared satisfactory resolution. However, which tools will best fit such a theoretical starting point? Our team is seeking to develop an innovative form of participatory modelling fitting these hypotheses. As regards regional planning, a novel way to put these assumptions into practice has been under way since 1997 in the Senegal River Valley. This experiment, called 'SelfCormas', is being conducted to test a directed self-designing of modelling tools, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Multi-Agent Systems (MAS) by stakeholders and principals. From the initial stages, as little prior design work as possible is executed by the modellers. The process has been organised in the form of participatory workshops, including role-playing games, to support a local decentralisation policy at an operational level (2,500 km2). This sort of accompaniment leads to discussions, appraisals and decisions concerning the planning of land-use management. Just a few months after the first workshops, this process has already culminated in autonomous applications, from local to regional levels.

De par leur richesse en ressources naturelles renouvelables, les zones inondables tropicales revetent un interet social et economique majeur pour les pays en developpement. Cependant, les fleuves tropicaux sont aujourd'hui de plus en plus amenages pour satisfaire les besoins lies a de nouvelles activites. Les zones jusque-la regulierement inondees par la crue annuelle se reduisent ou alors les rythmes de leur inondation sont profondement modifies. Les impacts de tels changements sont nombreux et portent atteinte a la biodiversite et a la durabilite des systemes d'exploitation. Il s'avere alors necessaire de definir de nouvelles approches de la gestion de l'eau, des espaces et des ressources vivantes, qui tout a la fois preservent les ecosystemes et prennent en consideration les besoins des differents usagers. Tel est l'objectif de cet ouvrage qui pose, dans un premier temps, la problematique societale autour de laquelle cette gestion doit etre repensee, en faisant apparaitre la diversite d'acteurs et d'institutions concernes. Il presente ensuite les acquis les plus recents de la recherche sur le fonctionnement de ces ecosystemes ainsi que sur les pratiques et strategies deployees par les populations qui les exploitent. Enfin est abordee la question des instruments a mettre en place pour assurer l'effectivite d'une gestion durable des zones inondables tropicales : apres avoir fait le point sur les apports de la recherche concernant les outils de traitement et de partage de l'information environnementale, l'ouvrage se termine par un debat sur les conditions de creation et de fonctionnement des institutions de suivi, de concertation et de decision. Abstract

This paper demonstrates that multi-agent systems have the capacity to model a region in all its complexity. An example is developed to show that these tools are not only capable of spatializing and distributing the behaviour of individuals, but above all, that they allow individuals to integrate different perceptions of space as well as the constraints imposed on them by a community. A dialectic is established between individuals, spaces and society, which is used to simulate a region using clearly defined social representations and spatial practices, which are suitable for testing our geographical theories and hypotheses.

This position paper contributes to the debate on perspectives for simulating the social processes of science through the specific angle of participatory research. This new way of producing science is still in its infancy and needs some step back and analysis, to understand what is taking place on the boundaries between academic, policy and lay worlds. We argue that social simulation of this practice of cooperation can help in understanding further this new way of doing science, building on existing experience in simulation of knowledge flows as well as pragmatic approaches in social sciences. Abstract

This paper presents the methodology developed to collect, understand and merge viewpoints coming from different stakeholders in order to build a shared and formal representation of the studied system dealing with groundwater management in the low-lying atoll of Tarawa (Republic of Kiribati). The methodology relies on three successive stages. First, a Global Targeted Appraisal focuses on social group leaders in order to collect different standpoints and their articulated mental models. These collective models are partly validated through Individual Activities Surveys focusing on behavioural patterns of individual islanders. Then, these models are merged into a single conceptual one using qualitative analysis software. This conceptual model is further simplified in order to create a computer-assisted role-playing game.
