Abstract

Background: In heavy ion collision at the Fermi energies Isospin equilibration processes occur- ring when nuclei with different charge/mass asymmetries interacts have been investigated to get information on the nucleon-nucleon Iso-vectorial effective interaction. Purpose: In this paper, for the system 48Ca +27 Al at 40 MeV/nucleon, we investigate on this process by means of an observable tightly linked to isospin equilibration processes and sensitive in exclusive way to the dynamical stage of the collision. From the comparison with dynamical model calculations we want also to obtain information on the Iso-vectorial effective microscopic interaction. Method: The average time derivative of the total dipole associated to the relative motion of all emitted charged particles and fragments has been determined from the measured charges and velocities by using the 4? multi-detector CHIMERA. The average has been determined for semi- peripheral collisions and for different charges Zb of the biggest produced fragment. Experimental evidences collected for the systems 27Al+48Ca and 27Al+40Ca at 40 MeV/nucleon used to support this novel method of investigation are also discussed., Comment: Submitted for publication on Phys. Abstract

Diagnoses of primary malignant mesenchymal brain tumors are a challenge for pathologists. Here, we report the case of a 52-year-old man with a primary brain tumor, histologically diagnosed as a high-grade glioma, not otherwise specified (NOS). The patient underwent two neurosurgeries in several months, followed by radiotherapy and chemotherapy. We re-examined the tumor samples by methylome profiling. Methylome analysis revealed an epi-signature typical of a primary intracranial sarcoma, DICER1-mutant, an extremely rare tumor. The diagnosis was confirmed by DNA sequencing that revealed a mutation in DICER1 exon 25. DICER1 mutations were not found in the patient's blood cells, thus excluding an inherited DICER1 syndrome. The methylome profile of the DICER1 mutant sarcoma was then compared with that of a high-grade glioma, a morphologically similar tumor type. We found that several relevant regions were differentially methylated. Taken together, we report the morphological, epigenetic, and genetic characterization of the sixth described case of an adult primary intracranial sarcoma, DICER1-mutant to-date. Furthermore, this case report underscores the importance of methylome analysis to refine primary brain tumor diagnosis and to avoid misdiagnosis among morphologically similar subtypes.

Abstract

The quality of public services provided to citizens through information and communication technologies has emerged as one of the key points of public administration reform. In Italy, many legislative measures have triggered a virtuous circle of eGovernment that has achieved limited results in adopting new technologies by citizens and businesses [1]. This paper sets out to explore whether the design of an IT platform operating in a smart city context may increase the quality of services provided to citizens. Based on a case study methodology, the research examines the process of revitalization and smartification of a city, seen from the stakeholders’ perspective such as Government, Citizens and Tourists [2]. The paper is original in its examination of the Tely platform enabled by data obtained from the technology developer. It turned out that the platform has the potential to increase the quality of services provided to citizens and promote social integration in an area with a significant migratory population. However, the limitations of a single case study in a specific research context, such as a small town, are acknowledged and further research is needed to fully understand the implications of smart city initiatives and their effective implementation in different contexts.

Abstract

Micro-injection moulding is one of the key manufacturing technologies for thermoplastic polymeric materials for the mass production of high value miniaturized components. However, this process is not just a straightforward down scaling of the conventional injection moulding technique. Indeed, during the micro-injection the polymer melt is forced to flow at high strain rates through very small channels in nonisothermal conditions; this can lead to complex microstructures and to parts with unexpected performances. In this work, the relationships among the processing conditions, the mechanical properties and the microstructural characteristics of polyoxymethylene mini-aturized specimens obtained by injection moulding were investigated. The attention was focused on the influence of the process temperatures on the mechanical behavior, examined by uniaxial tensile tests, and on the microstructural characteristics of the specimens, examined by differential scanning calorimetry, wide-angle X-ray diffraction, polarized light microscopy, and dynamic-mechanical thermal analysis. The results highlighted that material ductility in the miniaturized specimens is significantly affected by the mould temperature, because of the sample microstructure. Different degrees of orientation of polymer crystallites and different morphologies of the skin/core transition region were observed in dependence on the process temperatures. POLYM. ENG. Abstract

This thesis consists of three chapters. Each chapter is on a different subject. However, all three chapters address issues that arise in counting arithmetically interesting objects. Chapter 1 is on the unit equation in positive characteristic. Chapter 2 is about the statistical behavior of ray class groups, of fixed integral conductor, in families of imaginary quadratic fields. Chapter 3 concerns the study of the unit group of local fields in the category of filtered groups.

Abstract

Light represents the principal signal driving circadian clock entrainment. However, how light influences the evolution of the clock remains poorly understood. The cavefish Phreatichthys andruzzii represents a fascinating model to explore how evolution under extreme aphotic conditions shapes the circadian clock, since in this species the clock is unresponsive to light. We have previously demonstrated that loss-of-function mutations targeting non-visual opsins contribute in part to this blind clock phenotype. Here, we have compared orthologs of two core clock genes that play a key role in photic entrainment, cry1a and per2, in both zebrafish and P. andruzzii. We encountered aberrantly spliced variants for the P. andruzzii per2 transcript. The most abundant transcript encodes a truncated protein lacking the C-terminal Cry binding domain and incorporating an intronic, transposon-derived coding sequence. We demonstrate that the transposon insertion leads to a predominantly cytoplasmic localization of the cavefish Per2 protein in contrast to the zebrafish ortholog which is distributed in both the nucleus and cytoplasm. Thus, it seems that during evolution in complete darkness, the photic entrainment pathway of the circadian clock has been subject to mutation at multiple levels, extending from opsin photoreceptors to nuclear effectors. Abstract

Introducción: Una gráfica alimentaria es una guía que ayuda a los individuos a controlar y a mejorar la calidad de su alimentación; ofrece pautas sobre lo que debe comer una determinada población en términos de alimentos dando un marco para la correcta selección de los nutrientes a consumir. Objetivo: El objetivo de la presente publicación fue crear una herramienta de educación alimentaria destinada a pacientes de cirugía bariátrica para el postoperatorio en el largo plazo. Métodos: Se convocó a participar en mesas de trabajo a licenciados en nutrición y médicos especialistas en nutrición en un congreso realizado en el 2011. Se tomó como base científica el Primer Consenso Argentino de Nutrición en Cirugía Bariátrica y las "Guías alimentarias para la Población Argentina normal". De esta forma se adapta la misma a la población argentina con cirugía bariátrica sumada a la experiencia de los profesionales. Resultado: Como resultado se obtuvo un gráfica alimentaria en forma de óvalo, adaptación de la gráfica de las "Guías alimentarias para la población argentina", 12 mensajes o recomendaciones dirigidas a individuos con CB, una sugerencia de menú que responde a un valor calórico promedio de 1.273 calorías diarias, 145 g de carbohidratos, 76 g de proteínas y 43,2 g de grasas; 45,5% de calorías proveniente de los carbohidratos, 24% de calorías proveniente de las proteínas y 30,5 % de calorías proveniente de las grasas, 1.160 mg de calcio.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder characterized by the development of vascular complications associated with high morbidity and mortality and the consequent relevant costs for the public health systems. Diabetic kidney disease is one of these complications that represent the main cause of end-stage renal disease in Western countries. Hyperglycemia, inflammation, and oxidative stress contribute to its physiopathology, and several investigations have been performed to evaluate the role of antioxidant supplementation as a complementary approach for the prevention and control of diabetes and associated disturbances. Vitamin E compounds, including different types of tocopherols and tocotrienols, have been considered as a treatment to tackle major cardiovascular outcomes in diabetic subjects, but often with conflicting or even negative results. However, their effects on diabetic nephropathy are even less clear, despite several intervention studies that showed the improvement of renal parameters after supplementation in patients with diabetic kidney disease. Then we performed a review of the literature about the role of vitamin E supplementation on diabetic nephropathy, also describing the underlying antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and metabolic mechanisms to evaluate the possible use of tocopherols and tocotrienols in clinical practice.
