The undeniable benefits of enhanced sleep quality resulting from physical exercise have been well-established. However, analyzing the intricate relationship between recovery levels and sleep quality necessitates a thorough investigation. This exploration is essential to develop a comprehensive of how sleep influences recovery, particularly concerning training loads, in the context of young athletes. Physical recovery is a pivotal and rejuvenating aspect for athletes, highlighting the importance of examining its interplay with sleep. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of sleep quality on recovery during the tapering period among young swimmers. Based on a cross-sectional, descriptive, and quantitative approach, this research involved 15 swimming athletes affiliated with both the Pernambuco Aquatic Federation and the Brazilian Confederation of Aquatic Sports. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire and the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) sleepiness questionnaire were used to assess sleep behavior, and the Total Quality Recovery Scale was applied to verify levels of recovery (TQR). Data were collected 21 days before the target competition, body composition measurements were obtained and questionnaires were applied. Spearman's correlation showed a difference between total sleep time and sleep efficiency (r= -0.64) and a positive correlation between recovery from the second week to the third week (r= 0.0223). Females showed good sleep quality and recovery at week 1, while males did not show significant changes. The conclusion of the study was that the quality of sleep and its variables showed good quality in relation to recovery, described as reasonably recovered in week 2 closes to the competition. This study approached the effect of six-week plyometric training (PT) on sprint and change-of-direction ability. Thirty-six young basketball athletes were randomly assigned to a male experimental group (MEG, n= 6, 15.83 ± 0.75 years, height = 1.83 ± 0.07 m, body mass = 70.78 ± 11.83 kg) or a male control group (MCG, n= 7, 15.43 ± 1.13 years, height = 1.74 ± 0.13 m, body mass = 72.94 ± 24.13 kg) and female experimental group (FEG, n= 11, 14.45 ± 0.69 years, height = 1.60 ± 0.07 m, body mass = 53.72 ± 9.01 kg) or female control group (FCG, n= 10, 15.30 ± 1.16 years, height = 1.63 ± 0.08 m, body mass = 59.98 ± 16.74 kg). The Illinois agility test (IAT) and the 20 m sprint (Sp20m) were used to evaluate the change-of-direction ability and the sprint, respectively. Repeated measurements ANOVA and effect size (ES) showed that in Sp20m, both MEG and MCG showed significant improvements, with greater effects on MEG (ES= 1.07) compared to MCG (ES= 0.29). Among females, both groups showed significant improvements in Sp20m, with greater effects in EG (ES= 0.96) compared to CG (ES = 0.29). In the IAT, the MEG (ES= 0.82) and the MCG (ES= 0.28) showed significant improvements. For females, the EG showed greater effects (ES= 0.55) compared to the CG (ES= 0.18), although there were no significant improvements. Therefore, the EG showed positive and greater effects compared to the CG. This way, it is recommended to apply PT to improve these physical capacities in young basketball athletes. Changes in the level of physical conditioning, especially in the ability to perform repeated efforts, affect the perception of athletes' internal training load (ITL). However, little is known about the effectof improved vertical jumping and the ability to perform repeated jumps on the ITL ofvolleyball athletes. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between ITL and the improvement in vertical jumping performance and repeated jumping abilityofmale volleyball athletes. The ITL of 15 volleyball athletes was analyzed for 6weeks during the season using the session rating perception effort method (session-RPE). Before and after this period, the athletes underwent the countermovement vertical jump test (CMJ) and intermittent vertical jump test performed in 60 s (IJT60). The average power (AP) of IJT60was used for the analysis. The paired t-test was used to compare the vertical jump and the repeat jumpingability before and after 6weeks. In addition, the Pearson correlation test was used to relate the average total weekly training load (A-TWTL) of each athlete with the change in vertical jump (%) and with AP before and after the experiment. The athletes improved CMJ (p = 0.001) and AP (p = 0.05). A-TWTL showed a positive relationship with% of CMJ (r = 0.63, p = 0.001) and a negative relationship with APpost-experiment (r = - 0.71, p <0.05). Based on the results, it is determinedthat the improvement in vertical jump can positively affectthe ITL of male volleyball athletes during the season, and the improvement in the repeated jumping ability may have contributed to the ability of athletes to supporthigher external loads during training and games. Background: The passing decision-making performance in volleyball is important because it determines the quality of a team's attack. However, no study has analysed the effect of imagery training on passing decision-making performance in young volleyball athletes. Purpose: The objective was to analyse the effect of eight weeks of imagery training on passing decision-making performance. Method: Participants were 33 young male athletes (under 17 years [U-17]). Participants were randomly assigned to two groups: experimental (EG, n = 17) and control group (CG, n = 16). The CG watched videos of advertisements, while EG participated in the imagery training. A cognitive-general imagery programme was adopted, that asks the athletes to imagine themselves executing passes during a competitive event (e.g. reception of the service with variations of speed and displacement, pass to middle attacker, pass to other attackers, and pass with projection of the body on the ground). The passing decision-making was evaluated in a simulation of a volleyball official game. The analysis of actions was based on the Game Performance Assessment instrument. A heart rate monitor was adopted as an indicator of the autonomic nervous system response during the sessions for the EG and CG. Results: The results revealed a group versus intervention interaction (p <.01) for the passing decision-making, with improvement only in the EG (p =.01). A statistically significant difference in heart rate was identified between the groups (p =.01), with a higher value in the EG. Purpose: The aim of the study was to compare the magnitude of the symptoms of stress and the perception of psychophysiological recovery among judokas who adopted methods for body weight reduction and those who did not adopt such methods. Method: Participants included 39 judokas who were selected in a non-probabilistic way. The participants were randomly divided into two groups, namely, an experimental group (EG, n = 21) and a control group (CG, n = 21). The EG was induced to adopt an increase in the frequency of strategies directed towards body weight reduction, whereas the members of the CG followed their normal behaviour patterns. The Daily Analysis of Life Demands for Athletes was used to evaluate the symptoms of stress. The Recovery-Stress Questionnaire for Athletes was used to evaluate the perception of psychophysiological recovery. Results: The findings revealed that the magnitude of the symptoms of stress increased in the EG (F(2, 18) = 43.63, p = .01), whereas they did not increase in the CG (F(2, 17) = 3.14, p = .18). Furthermore, the post-test revealed significant differences between the two groups (F(2, 37) = 38.55, p = .01). The results demonstrated a reduction in the perception of psychophysiological recovery in the EG (F(2, 18) = 69.97, p = .001) and an increase in the CG (F(2, 18) = 47.61, p = .01), with a statistically significant difference between the two groups (F(2, 37) = 116.75, p = .001). This article compare Vertical Jump (VJ) and Handgrip Strength (HS) in basketball athletes by playing position and performance. The sample was composed of 183 male athletes. To evaluate the strength of the upper limbs, the HS isometric force test was used, while for the lower limbs the VJ countermovement test. In addition, it was analyzed maximum reach (MR), as well as was analyzed relative strength. It was observed that the centers displayed the lowest VJ score (p = .029). Regarding MR, centers displayed the highest score (p < .001). Regarding dominant HS, the guards displayed the lowest scores (p = .005) as well as non dominant HS (p = .023). It was found that G4 presented higher VJ (p < .001), as well as MR (p < .001). No difference was found regarding dominant and non dominant absolute HS, as well as relative scores (p > .05). It was found higher VJ performance in G4 athletes in every playing position (Guards: p = .042, Forwards: p = .005 and Centers: p = .032) as well as in MR (Guards: p = .002, Forwards: p = .002 and Centers: p = .002). No difference was found regarding dominant and non dominant HS and relative HS of dominant and non dominant hand between G4 and Z4 in any playing position (p > .05). In this sense, it is possible to conclude that different playing positions demand specific physical profile and motor skills, probably due to the difference in technical and tactical requirements that are assigned to each playing position. The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between competitive anxiety and heart rate variability (HRV) in swimming athletes. A total of 66 volunteers (41 male and 27 female) who swam the 400-m freestyle in the Brazilian Swimming Championships participated. Thirty minutes before the 400-m freestyle event, the athletes answered the Competitive Anxiety Inventory (CSAI-2R) questionnaire, then underwent anthropometric (body weight, height, and skinfold thickness) and HRV measurements. Then, at a second meeting, held 3 h after the 400-m freestyle event, the athletes returned to the evaluation room for HRV measurement (Polar ® RS800cx, Kempele, Finland). Multiple linear regression was used to evaluate the relationship between competitive anxiety and HRV. The multiple linear regression was performed in three blocks (block 1: cognitive anxiety, block 2: somatic anxiety, and block 3: self-confidence), adopting the forward model. The results indicated a significant association between cognitive anxiety (p = 0.001) and HRV. An increased magnitude of the association was observed when somatic anxiety was inserted in the model (p = 0.001). In contrast, self-confidence showed, which was inserted in block 3, no relationship with HRV (p = 0.27). It was concluded that cognitive and somatic anxieties were associated with the HRV of swimmers. Athletes with a high magnitude of cognitive and/or somatic anxiety demonstrated more significant autonomic nervous system disturbance. Practically, psychological interventions are needed to improve anxiety states that are specific to perform well, and to improve HRV.
