No records of systematic reviews focused on deep learning in open learning have been found, although there has been some focus on other areas of machine learning. Through a systematic review, this study aimed to determine the trends, applied computational techniques, and areas of educational use of deep learning in open learning. The PRISMA protocol was used, and the Web of Science Core Collection (2019-2023) was searched. VOSviewer was used for networking and clustering, and in-depth analysis was employed to answer the research questions. Among the main results, it is worth noting that the scientific literature has focused on the following areas: (a) predicting student dropout, (b) automatic grading of short answers, and (c) recommending MOOC courses. It was concluded that pedagogical challenges have included the effective personalization of content for different learning styles and the need to address possible inherent biases in the datasets (e.g., socio-demographics, traces, competencies, learning objectives) used for training. Regarding deep learning, we observed an increase in the use of pre-trained models, the development of more efficient architectures, and the growing use of interpretability techniques. Technological challenges related to the use of large datasets, intensive computation, interpretability, knowledge transfer, ethics and bias, security, and cost of implementation were also evident.

While high circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) levels are associated with poor survival for multiple cancers, variant-specific differences in the association of ctDNA levels and survival have not been examined. Here we investigate KRAS ctDNA (ctKRAS) variant-specific associations with overall and progression-free survival (OS/PFS) in first-line metastatic pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (mPDAC) for patients receiving chemoimmunotherapy (PRINCE, NCT03214250), and an independent cohort receiving standard of care (SOC) chemotherapy. For PRINCE, higher baseline plasma levels are associated with worse OS for ctKRAS G12D (log-rank p = 0.0010) but not G12V (p = 0.7101), even with adjustment for clinical covariates. Early, on-therapy clearance of G12D (p = 0.0002), but not G12V (p = 0.4058), strongly associates with OS for PRINCE. Similar results are obtained for the SOC cohort, and for PFS in both cohorts. These results suggest ctKRAS G12D but not G12V as a promising prognostic biomarker for mPDAC and that G12D clearance could also serve as an early biomarker of response.

A growing body of research has shown the positive effects of peer tutoring on students' academic achievement, self-concept, attitude, social, and behavioral outcomes. There is, however, a paucity of research that focuses on peer-tutoring interventions for Hispanic students. The current study examined classroom practices, as well as program teachers' and students' behaviors within a cross-age peer-tutoring program implemented in elementary and middle schools that serve predominantly Hispanic students. Classroom observations were used to investigate the implementation of the peer-tutoring program. The results indicated that the program's strengths included the development of positive emotions and relationships among students and a classroom environment that fostered warm and supportive relationships. The findings also indicated several weaknesses in the implementation of the program. Practitioners can use the findings to improve the effectiveness of future peer-tutoring programs in mathematics

Abstract Background Rasmussen’s encephalitis (RE) is a rare neurologic disorder characterized by progressive seizures and unilateral cerebral atrophy with onset during childhood and unknown etiology. When medical therapy appears refractory, surgical disconnection of the affected hemisphere is indicated. Quality of life after functional hemispherectomy is largely good, affected females may therefore pursue pregnancy. However, data on pregnancy and delivery in RE post hemispherectomy is extremely rare. Case presentation We present the case of a patient with left functional hemispherectomy for RE at the age of seven, who experienced two successful pregnancies. In both pregnancies, her post-surgical symptoms including right-sided spasticity, cephalgia, dizziness, and impairment of vision and speech deteriorated but improved to pre-pregnancy level after delivery. Neurologic sequelae post-hemispherectomy overlapped with clinical signs of preeclampsia and required close diagnostic surveillance during both pregnancies. Conclusion There are no data on the interaction between RE, hemispherectomy and pregnancy, making maternal and fetal risk assessment difficult. Due to the complexity of the condition and symptoms, management of RE in pregnancy remains highly challenging and requires an interdisciplinary approach. This is the first case description of two successful pregnancies in a woman with RE and status post-hemispherectomy. Further evidence is urgently required to improve counseling and management of affected women.

Abstract In this study we tested whether depression is associated with impaired semantic inhibition, resulting in symptoms of rumination and anhedonia. For this purpose and using the Beck Depression Inventory II (BDI-II) college students with depressive states (DEP) and matched controls (CTL) performed a Hayling’s task, while EEG and pupillometry measures were recorded. Participants were asked to complete sentential contexts with either a highly associated word (initiation) or a non-related word (inhibition), in response to randomly presented trial-by-trial cues. The DEP group, compared to the CTL group, showed lower performance, and reduced frontal negativity (N450) in inhibition trials. Source analyses revealed greater activation for inhibition trials than for initiation trials in bilateral orbitofrontal cortex for the CTL group, but the difference was reduced and more left lateralized for the DEP group. In addition, the DEP group showed more pupil size reactivity to inhibition trials than the CTL group, indicating higher cognitive effort during semantic inhibition. Finally, self-reported rumination and anhedonia correlated with N450 in inhibition trials, and rumination correlated with pupil dilation. Overall, this research contributes to understanding the neural underpinnings of impaired semantic inhibition in individuals with depression, with potential clinical applications.

Teachers' job satisfaction and teacher self-efficacy in teaching are two of the main factors driving STEM teacher shortages in teaching students who are English Learners (ELs). This study investigated the impact of teachers' perceptions of school climate and professional development (PD) participation on teacher self-efficacy in teaching and job satisfaction for STEM teachers of ELs. The public dataset TALIS 2018, including 985 public middle school STEM teachers of ELs in the USA, was used for the path analysis. The results showed that PD participation in multicultural education and STEM teachers' perceptions of school climate had significantly positive direct effects on job satisfaction and self-efficacy in teaching ELs. Additionally, findings showed that STEM teacher self-efficacy in teaching mediates the relationship between school climate and teachers' job satisfaction. This study contributes to the body of knowledge based on developing the capacity of STEM teachers of ELs and provides recommendations for future STEM teacher PD programs.

The low reputation of vocational education in Spain requires schools to reconsider this type of education by taking advantage of its key resources and developing dynamic capabilities. Using structural equation modelling, this study analyses the impact of technological resources on two categories of dynamic capabilities: sensing capability and innovativeness, as well as the effect of these two capabilities on reputation, in a representative sample of vocational schools in tourism in Spain, with the key informants being the staff responsible for the degree (i.e., director, vice-director, head of studies, etc.). The results show that the use of technological resources provides vocational schools with the necessary capabilities to explore trends in social demands and the job market and reduce the gap between academy and industry. The findings also reveal that innovativeness has a direct influence on the schools' reputation. However, the opportunities for improvement detected through the sensing capability do not directly influence reputation; instead, they require a subsequent action, innovativeness, that favours their effective implementation.

Es necesario medir los impactos generados por el turismo para poder tomar decisiones que afecten a esta actividad. Una de las principales herramientas de medición de la misma es la Cuenta Satélite del Turismo (CST) por su carácter internacional. En este trabajo se ha procedido a comparar un total de 27 países, pertenecientes o relacionados con la Unión Europea (UE), a través de sus CST. La finalidad del trabajo es lograr extraer conclusiones generales acerca de cómo se estructura la actividad turística en estos países para identificar las diferencias existentes entre los mismos. Además, se ha decidido emplear una serie de datos complementarios para poder elaborar varios tipos de indicadores que faciliten el análisis. Por último, en este trabajo se analizan los inconvenientes vinculados al uso de la CST como herramienta de comparación y se recomiendan mejoras para una mejor recogida de estadística turística.

This study describes the immature stages, host plant, and interactions with parasitoid wasps of the butterfly Phoebis argante, a very widely distributed species, commonly found in the dry forest ecotone of the western Andes in Azuay province, Ecuador. The development time from oviposition to adult averaged 48 days. The host plant is identified as Inga edulis Mart. (Fabaceae), a leguminous tree widely distributed in the Neotropics which has various cultural uses. Given its cultural significance, adaptive capacity, role in soil erosion prevention, and ecological importance as a habitat for pollinating insects, I. edulis could be a promising candidate for revegetation projects in gardens and green areas in Ecuador. Sexual dimorphism in pupal color patterns was observed: female pupae displayed a heterogeneous color pattern with black spots, while male pupae were uniformly yellowish-green. This sexual dimorphism in pupal coloration may be an adaptive mechanism for camouflage during this vulnerable developmental stage or could be related to adult wing phenotype. Additionally, koinobiont endoparasitoid wasps, from the subfamily Microgastrinae (Braconidae), were obtained from first and second instar larvae.

Forestation can contribute to climate change mitigation. However, increasing frequency and intensity of climate extremes are posed to have profound impact on forests and consequently on the mitigation potential of forestation efforts. In this perspective, we critically assess forestation-reliant climate mitigation scenarios from five different integrated assessment models (IAMs) by showcasing the spatially explicit exposure of forests to fire weather and the simulated increase in global annual burned area. We provide a detailed description of the feedback from climate change to forest carbon uptake in IAMs. Few IAMs are currently accounting for feedback mechanisms like loss from fire disturbance. Consequently, many forestation areas proposed by IAM scenarios will be exposed to fire-promoting weather conditions and without costly prevention measures might be object to frequent burning. We conclude that the actual climate mitigation portfolio in IAM scenarios is subject to substantial uncertainty and that the risk of overly optimistic estimates of negative emission potential of forestation should be avoided. As a way forward we propose how to integrate more detailed climate information when modeling climate mitigation pathways heavily relying on forestation.

We report in-plume carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations and carbon isotope ratios during the 2021 eruption of Tajogaite volcano, island of La Palma, Spain. CO2 measurements inform our understanding of volcanic contributions to the global climate carbon cycle and the role of CO2 in eruptions. Traditional ground-based methods of CO2 collection are difficult and dangerous, and as a result only about 5 % of volcanoes have been directly surveyed. We demonstrate that unpiloted aerial system (UAS) surveys allow for fast and relatively safe measurements. Using CO2 concentration profiles we estimate the total flux during several measurements in November 2021 to be 1.76±0.20×103 to 2.23±0.26×104 t d−1. Carbon isotope ratios of plume CO2 indicate a deep magmatic source, consistent with the intensity of the eruption. Our work demonstrates the feasibility of UASs for CO2 surveys during active volcanic eruptions, particularly for deriving rapid emission estimates.

Abstract Background To report the risk of exudation recurrence and long-term outcomes in patients with choroidal neovascularization secondary to angioid streaks, according to its morphology and characteristics by optical coherence tomography angiography. Methods Retrospective analysis of electronic medical records from three hospitals. We enrolled patients with a clinical diagnosis of angioid streaks choroidal neovascularization that had a minimum follow-up of 12 months. From each record, we extracted general demographic data, best corrected visual acuity (baseline, before and after each disease recurrence and last on file), type of treatment, time between last intravitreal injection and disease recurrence, and classification of the neovascular lesion morphology by optical coherence tomography, and optical coherence tomography angiography. Patients with myopic choroidal neovascularization were used as controls. Interobserver agreement was assessed with a Cohen-Kappa test. The Odds ratio was calculated with a chi2 test for significance. Visual acuity change through time was evaluated with an ANOVA for repeated measurements with an alpha value of 0.05 for statistical significance. Results We enrolled 30 patients in the study group and 14 in the control group. In the study group, the baseline and final BCVA were 0.861 ± 0.59 and 1.095 ± 0.61 logMAR (p = 0.1) respectively.
