Abstract

People with visual impairments face numerous challenges in their daily lives, including mobility, access to information, independent living, and employment. Artificial Intelligence (AI) with Computer Vision (CV) has the potential to improve their daily lives, provide them with necessary independence, and it will also spawn new opportunities in education and employment. However, while many such AI/CV-based mobile applications are now available, these apps are still not the preferred choice amongst visually impaired persons and are generally limited to advanced users only, due to certain limitations. This study evaluates the challenges faced by visually impaired persons when using AI/CV-based mobile apps. Four popular AI/CV- based apps, namely Seeing AI, Supersense, Envision and Lookout, are assessed by blind and low-vision users. Hence these mobile applications are evaluated on a set of parameters, including generic parameters based on the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) and specific parameters related to mobile app testing. The evaluation not only focused on the guidelines but also on the feedback that was gathered from these users on parameters covering the apps' accuracy, response time, reliability, accessibility, privacy, energy efficiency and usability. The paper also identifies the areas of improvement in the development and innovation of these assistive apps. Abstract

Large language models (LLMs) have demonstrated strong potential in performing automatic scoring for constructed response assessments. While constructed responses graded by humans are usually based on given grading rubrics, the methods by which LLMs assign scores remain largely unclear. It is also uncertain how closely AI's scoring process mirrors that of humans, or if it adheres to the same grading criteria. To address this gap, this paper uncovers the grading rubrics that LLMs used to score students' written responses to science tasks and their alignment with human scores. We also examine whether enhancing the alignments can improve scoring accuracy. Specifically, we prompt LLMs to generate analytic rubrics that they use to assign scores and study the alignment gap with human grading rubrics. Based on a series of experiments with various configurations of LLM settings, we reveal a notable alignment gap between human and LLM graders. While LLMs can adapt quickly to scoring tasks, they often resort to shortcuts, bypassing deeper logical reasoning expected in human grading. We found that incorporating high-quality analytical rubrics designed to reflect human grading logic can mitigate this gap and enhance LLMs' scoring accuracy. Methods: Records of preterm babies born to mothers with triplet pregnancies were retrieved from our Indian twin city ROP study database between 1 Jan 2000 and 31 Dec 2020 and analyzed. Results: 253 surviving triplet babies born to 108 mothers were evaluated. 48 out of 108 (44%) mothers received treatment for infertility. Data was available and analyzed for 242 babies (484 eyes). Mean gestational age was 31.76 ± 3.74 weeks (26- 38 weeks). The mean birth weight was 1.44 ± 0.37 kg (0.57-2.76 kg). At the first screening, incomplete vascularization was noted in 67% (131 babies;322 eyes) of which ROP was diagnosed in 14% (28 babies; 56 eyes). Among them, only 18 babies (53%) were the smallest birth weight babies in each of the triplet sets. Treatment with laser or bevacizumab was performed in 14 babies (5.8%), one eye of one baby additionally needed vitreoretinal surgical intervention. Good anatomical outcomes in terms of regression of ROP without sequelae were achieved in all babies. Conclusion: The present study reveals low incidence and favorable outcomes of ROP in triplet pregnancies in a large cohort of babies from a middle-income country. Our cohort did not show any difference in the treatment-requiring ROP among the larger or smaller birth weight babies of the same gestational age. In multiple pregnancies, gestational age remains a critical factor for ROP development; however, this does not necessitate modifying screening or treatment criteria in such triplet pregnancies. Abstract

The present study was done to get a standard dose of xylazine/ketamine with minimum recovery time. Ten healthy red pandas were anesthetized for the blood collection for their blood biochemistry and hematological studies at the Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park, Darjeeling. The animals were administered with xylazine/ketamine according to their body weight and recovery time was calculated. We found that immobilization was successful with a low dose of ketamine which was found very low as compared to other authors. The lower anesthetic dose was effective in young animals but there was no relation between age and recovery time. Based on the findings of the present study we can conclude that red pandas between 4-7 kg body weight could be easily immobile with the dose of xylazine/ketamine between 2-5 mg/kg and can be recovered in 25 minutes. The conclusion is completely based on the study of the captive-bred red pandas in the Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park. The results of this study may vary from other zoos due to geographical and regional differences.
