Abstract

Liquid bridges and pendant drops, whether in a force field or in a neutral environment are all menisci. Those of greatest interest are axisymmetric in shape, which when perturbed or stretched, tend to break into three parts one of which is a free floating satellite drop. In this study an attempt has been made to understand the transient surface properties that control the processes of bifurcation and breakage of the liquid system. The paper demonstrates that a trifurcation process occurs similarly with both high and low viscosity liquids, and both lead to the formation of a connecting rod of liquid between the two halves of the bridge. At low viscosity the rod appears to break simultaneously (in 0 g) at both ends by Rayleigh instability of the type attributed to the break up of jets. At high viscosity, the rod continues to thin and stretch until it disappears evanescently. In terrestrial gravity breakage occurs similarly and a satellite drop is formed. A new type of instability was found using two liquids of widely different viscosity. A bridge formed from two miscible half zones, one of high and one of low viscosity, formed a satellite drop impaled on a thread of the high viscosity liquid. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
