This study aimed at determining the Women Participation in Maritime Higher Education Institutions (MHEIs) in Southeast Asia and its implication to Maritime Environment. The respondents of this study are the key officials of each MHEIs with female enrollee. This study utilized a self-constructed questionnaire in gathering the desired information. Majority of the respondents are coming from Regions 5, 7, 1 and 3 who are Maritime Deans and Department Heads ranging from 35-45 years old to 56-65 years old with 10- 20 years experience in the position. MHEIs in the Philippines have employed the following strategies in order to increase the participation of women in the maritime profession: (1) advertise of success stories of women graduates; (2) emphasize women’s success stories in maritime jobs; (3) change and design class dynamics to have equal chances for both men and women to enhance quality education; (4) establish partnership/linkages with industry associations/organizations; and (5) Consider the number of female faculty members and staff in the maritime department. Moreover, the following recommendations which will be used for future policy formulations by concerned authorities, such as the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) and the Commission for Higher Education (CHED) in the Philippines are: (1) Conduct study to examine the working conditions, attitudes and cultural behaviors of women on-board ships and provide research funds relative to women’s engagement in the maritime profession; (2) Organize maritime women graduates and let them link with different women in maritime associations (WIMAs) worldwide and in the Philippines; and (3) Organize public speaking workshops targeted at female maritime professionals. The first three (3) implications to Marine Environment are as follows: 1) Learn how to live with men and their idiosyncrasies; 2) Since communication is an important element of education, please tell the girl child, the daughter of a friend and the lady asking questions about the profession. Tell them about how lucrative the job is. Never turn down an invitation for a seminar when given an opportunity to brief the people about the maritime industry. Be a role model/mentor to others by sharing experiences and achievements; and 3) Women should not take into heart discouraging articles written about some women in the maritime industry by some journalists, “to air is human” but rather capitalize on the lab our shortages now and apply.

ZnO nanostructures were successfully grown on electrochemically etched p-type Si (100) substrate via chemical bath deposition method under basic solution. These nanostructures are characterized through scanning electron microscopy – energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis). SEM results revealed that the density of the ZnO nanorods can be controlled by changing the surface morphology of the substrate via electrochemical etching process. At around 200-400 nm, the reflectance intensity of ZnO is significantly decreased as the density of the nanorods increases. Discussion on the possible growth mechanism of ZnO on etched Si during deposition is also presented.

The study was conducted to find some solutions to the perennial problem of the maritime education program of Siquijor State College, the incomplete and failing marks of the Bachelor of Science in Marine Transportation (BSMT) and Bachelor of Science in Marine Engineering (BSMarE) students in general chemistry, despite the efforts undertaken by the department. It seeks to find out the (a) significant difference between students’ grades on the subject with their profile (age, course they enrolled and section); (b) significant difference between the respondents’ attitudes towards general chemistry in the six dimensions (interest in the subject, importance, chemistry teacher, difficulty of the subject, experiments, and laboratory equipment and facilities) and their profile; and (c) relationship between the respondents’ performance in general chemistry and their attitudes towards the subject. Random sampling was used, and data were treated using percentage, weighted mean, one-way ANOVA, and Pearson product moment correlation. There is a significant difference between student’s grades, in general, chemistry and their age and section while course they enrolled was not significant. The attitudes of the students in chemistry vary significantly with their age, course, and section. There is a weak positive correlation between grades and attitudes towards chemistry particularly with laboratory equipment, teacher, importance of the chemistry subject, laboratory experiments, the difficulty of the subject and interest in the subject. To improve students’ performance, in general, chemistry the teacher can consider the following: identify the type of learners and vary teaching strategies suited for in every class; know the IQ level of the students per section, and connect theories in lectures to actual laboratory performance of experiments using different apparatus and equipment. The basis for sectioning (the students’ IQ level) of the department may also be retained to have a homogeneous grouping. This study was determined about their course, age, sex, marital status, average family monthly income, membership in fraternity or sorority, family background, and living arrangements while studying at Siquijor State College. More respondents are males, single, in the age bracket of above 20 years old and living below poverty line. The majority is not members of sorority/fraternity; living with their families where they travel to school every day, and they have complete parents. They are very much aware of the effects of drugs on their jobs and of the shipping companies’ drug policy. Moreover, they are also much aware of the general, safety, and legal implications of alcohol and drug abuse in the maritime sector. Their profiles do not affect the awareness level on PADAMS and with their grades in the subject. Between grades and the awareness level on PADAMS, the positive correlation is weak. Every move that should be undertaken by the administration of Siquijor State College-Maritime Education Program should be geared towards the development of the students particularly in the continuous education, information and campaign against drug abuse. This study focuses on the growth of Zinc Oxide (ZnO) nanostructures on SiO2/Si(100) substrate via chemical bath deposition (CBD) with varying NH4OH concentration and annealing temperature. The grown ZnOnanostructures were characterized via SEM-EDS for the surface morphology and elemental composition and UV-Vis spectroscopy for the reflectance measurement. Increasing the concentration of NH4OH produced denser ZnOnanostructures composed of rods having smaller diameter. It is believed that at higher concentration of NH4OH, more Zn(OH)2 seed will act as nucleation site for ZnOformation which suggests higher probability of ZnOgrowth. Thermal annealing increased the average diameter of ZnOnanorods. Annealing provided enough energy for unstable atoms to rearrange into a more suitable position. This would result to larger rods that have been formed in expense of the smaller rods. Furthermore, it is confirmed in the UV-Vis spectroscopy results that ZnOnanostructures were successfully grown on SiO2/Si(100) substrate. This successful growth of ZnOnanostructures is a promising material for solar cell technology.
