In rural, geographically dispersed school districts, access to high-quality face-to-face professional development (PD) is challenging. Our study developed and compared the effectiveness of an online PD for middle-school science teachers working in remote, rural areas of Kansas with an evidence-based traditional face-to-face PD with the goal of supporting change in teachers' conceptual understanding and self-efficacy in utilizing Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), change in instructional practices, and overall student content learning. Fifteen rural middle-school science teacher participants were randomly selected to participate in the online or traditional PD, then taught the Toward High School Biology curriculum to their 504 middle-school students. Findings aligned with our hypothesis that online PD is as effective as traditional in improving student content knowledge related to the curriculum. Teachers' instructional practices in using Next Generation Science Standards improved, as did their use of student-centered instruction and making science relevant to the lives of their students. Our study supports the importance of designing PD that effectively and economically brings teachers in isolated and diverse rural communities together.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the experiences of multiple campus teams as they engaged in the assessment of their science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) mentoring ecosystems within a peer assessment dialogue exercise. Design/methodology/approach: This project utilized a qualitative multicase study method involving six campus teams, drawing upon completed inventory and visual mapping artefacts, session observations and debriefing interviews. The campuses included research universities, small colleges and minority-serving institutions (MSIs) across the United States of America. The authors analysed which features of the peer assessment dialogue exercise scaffolded participants' learning about ecosystem synergies and threats. Findings: The results illustrated the benefit of instructor modelling, intra-team process time and multiple rounds of peer assessment. Participants gained new insights into their own campuses and an increased sense of possibility by dialoguing with peer campuses. Research limitations/implications: This project involved teams from a small set of institutions, relying on observational and self-reported debriefing data. Future research could centre perspectives of institutional leaders. Practical implications: The authors recommend dedicating time to the institutional assessment of mentoring ecosystems. Investing in a campus-wide mentoring infrastructure could align with campus equity goals. Originality/value: In contrast to studies that have focussed solely on programmatic outcomes of mentoring, this study explored strategies to strengthen institutional mentoring ecosystems in higher education, with a focus on peer assessment, dialogue and learning exercises.

Purpose: This study examines how resources and organizational decisions within seven geographically diverse elementary schools shape instructional coordination for Tier 2 interventions within the Response to Intervention (RtI) framework. Research Methods: This work is part of a larger, multiple-case study examining how schools support academic achievement for economically disadvantaged students. We draw on qualitative interview and observation data from seven purposively sampled public elementary schools in Wisconsin during the 2017-18 school year. In our analysis, we approach each school as an individual case to ascertain how resources and organizational decisions shaped instructional coordination for Tier 2 interventions within the RtI framework. Findings: We find that organizational contexts shape how schools approach the instructional coordination of staffing and schedules requisite for multitiered instruction. Specifically, local programming, delineation of staff roles, and availability and deployment of school resources influenced if and how schools coordinated staff and schedules to support RtI. These elements consequently informed student groupings for interventions, the extent of student access to Tier 1 and Tier 2 content, and staff engagement in data-driven discussions. Implications: By closely examining the everyday realities of diverse elementary schools, this study demonstrates that RtI is not a singular program but a context-contingent process. In tracing the relationships between school contexts, instructional coordination, and the practical implementation of RtI, we provide insight into the messy realities of schools and obstacles to RtI that past research overlooks. These findings emphasize the importance of systematic, school-wide coordination that extends beyond single grade levels and subjects.

Anthracyclines such as doxorubicin (Dox) are effective chemotherapeutic agents; however, their use is hampered by subsequent cardiotoxicity risk. Our understanding of cardiomyocyte protective pathways activated following anthracycline-induced cardiotoxicity (AIC) remains incomplete. Insulin-like growth factor binding protein (IGFBP) 3 (Igfbp-3), the most abundant IGFBP family member in the circulation, is associated with effects on the metabolism, proliferation, and survival of various cells. Whereas Igfbp-3 is induced by Dox in the heart, its role in AIC is ill-defined. We investigated molecular mechanisms as well as systems-level transcriptomic consequences of manipulating Igfbp-3 in AIC using neonatal rat ventricular myocytes and human-induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes. Our findings reveal that Dox induces the nuclear enrichment of Igfbp-3 in cardiomyocytes. Furthermore, Igfbp-3 reduces DNA damage, impedes topoisomerase IIβ expression (Top2β) which forms Top2β-Dox-DNA cleavage complex leading to DNA double-strand breaks (DSB), alleviates detyrosinated microtubule accumulation-a hallmark of increased cardiomyocyte stiffness and heart failure-and favorably affects contractility following Dox treatment. These results indicate that Igfbp-3 is induced by cardiomyocytes in an effort to mitigate AIC.

Background: There is currently no cogent set of standards to guide the design, implementation and evaluation of nutrition social and behavior change (SBC), including for nutrition-sensitive agriculture (NSA). Objectives: We aimed to capture, consolidate, and describe SBC core principles and practices (CPPs), reflecting professional consensus, and to offer programmatic examples that illustrate their application for NSA projects in low- and middle-income countries. Methods: We conducted a narrative review following a 4-step iterative process to identify and describe SBC CPPs. We first reviewed general SBC frameworks and technical documents and developed a preliminary list of CPPs and their definitions. Following review and feedback from 8 content experts, we revised the CPPs, incorporating the panel’s feedback, and conducted a more specific search of the peer-reviewed and gray literature. We presented a revised draft of the CPPs to 26 NSA researchers, practitioners, and implementers at the 2022 Agriculture, Nutrition and Health Academy annual conference. We then conducted a focused review of each CPP, and 3 content experts rereviewed the final draft. Results: We reviewed ∼475 documents and resources resulting in a set of 4 core principles: 1) following a systematic, strategic method in designing, implementing, and evaluating SBC activities; 2) ensuring design and implementation are evidence-based; 3) grounding design and implementation in theory; and 4) authentically engaging communities. Additionally, we identified 11 core practices and mapped these to the different stages in the SBC design, implementation, and evaluation cycle. Detailed descriptions, illustrative examples and resources for implementation are provided for each CPP. Conclusions: An explicit set of CPPs for SBC can serve as a guide for design, research, implementation, and evaluation of nutrition and NSA programs; help standardize knowledge sharing and production; and contribute to improved quality of implementation. Broader consultation with SBC practitioners and researchers will further consensus on this work.

Summary: Early caregiving adversity (ECA) is associated with social behavior deficits and later development of psychopathology. However, the infant neural substrates of ECA are poorly understood. The lateral habenula (LHb), a highly conserved brain region with consistent links to adult psychopathology, is understudied in development, when the brain is most vulnerable to environmental impacts. Here, we describe the structural and functional ontogeny of the LHb and its behavioral role in infant and juvenile rat pups. We show that the LHb promotes a developmental transition in social approach behavior under threat as typically reared infants mature. By contrast, we show that ECA disrupts habenular ontogeny, including volume, protein expression, firing properties, and corticohabenular connectivity. Furthermore, inhibiting a specific corticohabenular projection rescues infant social approach deficits following ECA. Together, these results identify immediate biomarkers of ECA in the LHb and highlight this region as a site of early social processing and behavior control.

BackgroundMany patients use artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots as a rapid source of health information. This raises important questions about the reliability and effectiveness of AI chatbots in delivering accurate and understandable information.PurposeTo evaluate and compare the accuracy, conciseness, and readability of responses from OpenAI ChatGPT-4 and Google Bard to patient inquiries concerning the novel 177Lu-PSMA-617 therapy for prostate cancer.Materials and methodsTwo experts listed the 12 most commonly asked questions by patients on 177Lu-PSMA-617 therapy. These twelve questions were prompted to OpenAI ChatGPT-4 and Google Bard. AI-generated responses were distributed using an online survey platform (Qualtrics) and blindly rated by eight experts. The performances of the AI chatbots were evaluated and compared across three domains: accuracy, conciseness, and readability. Additionally, potential safety concerns associated with AI-generated answers were also examined. The Mann-Whitney U and chi-square tests were utilized to compare the performances of AI chatbots.ResultsEight experts participated in the survey, evaluating 12 AI-generated responses across the three domains of accuracy, conciseness, and readability, resulting in 96 assessments (12 responses x 8 experts) for each domain per chatbot. ChatGPT-4 provided more accurate answers than Bard (2.95 ± 0.671 vs 2.73 ± 0.732, p=0.027). Bard’s responses had better readability than ChatGPT-4 (2.79 ± 0.408 vs 2.94 ± 0.243, p=0.003). Both ChatGPT-4 and Bard achieved comparable conciseness scores (3.14 ± 0.659 vs 3.11 ± 0.679, p=0.798). Experts categorized the AI-generated responses as incorrect or partially correct at a rate of 16.6% for ChatGPT-4 and 29.1% for Bard. Bard’s answers contained significantly more misleading information than those of ChatGPT-4 (p = 0.039).ConclusionAI chatbots have gained significant attention, and their performance is continuously improving. Nonetheless, these technologies still need further improvements to be considered reliable and credible sources for patients seeking medical information on 177Lu-PSMA-617 therapy.

Extended reality (XR) refers to an umbrella of methods that allows users to be immersed in a three-dimensional (3D) or a 4D (spatial + temporal) virtual environment to different extents, including virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and mixed reality (MR). While VR allows a user to be fully immersed in a virtual environment, AR and MR overlay virtual objects over the real physical world. The immersion and interaction of XR provide unparalleled opportunities to extend our world beyond conventional lifestyles. While XR has extensive applications in fields such as entertainment and education, its numerous applications in biomedicine create transformative opportunities in both fundamental research and healthcare. This Primer outlines XR technology from instrumentation to software computation methods, delineating the biomedical applications that have been advanced by state-of-the-art techniques. We further describe the technical advances overcoming current limitations in XR and its applications, providing an entry point for professionals and trainees to thrive in this emerging field.

The pressure-induced phase transformations of rare earth orthophosphates (REPO4s) have become increasingly relevant in ceramic matrix composite (CMC) research; however, understanding of the shear-dependence of these transformations remains limited. This study employs diamond anvil cell experiments with three pressure media (neon, KCl, sample itself/no medium) to systematically assess the effect of shear on the phase transformations of TbPO4. Results show a lowering of the TbPO4 transformation onset pressure (Ponset) as well as an extension of the xenotime–monazite phase coexistence range under non-hydrostatic conditions. The TbPO4 Ponset under no medium (4.4(3) GPa) is the lowest REPO4 Ponset reported to date and represents a ~50% drop from the hydrostatic Ponset. Enthalpic differences likely account for lower Ponset values in TbPO4 compared to DyPO4. Experiments also show scheelite may be the post-monazite phase of TbPO4; this phase is consistent with observed and predicted REPO4 transformation pathways.

AimsWe determined the feasibility and diagnostic performance of segmental 18F-flurpiridaz myocardial blood flow (MBF) measurement by positron emission tomography (PET) compared with the standard territory method, and assessed whether flow metrics provide incremental diagnostic value beyond relative perfusion quantitation (PQ).Methods and resultsAll evaluable pharmacological stress patients from the Phase III trial of 18F-flurpiridaz were included (n = 245) and blinded flow metrics obtained. For each coronary territory, the segmental flow metric was defined as the lowest 17-segment stress MBF (SMBF), myocardial flow reserve (MFR), or relative flow reserve (RFR) value. Diagnostic performances of segmental and territory MBF metrics were compared by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) areas under the curve (AUC). A multiple logistic model was used to evaluate whether flow metrics provided incremental diagnostic value beyond PQ alone. The diagnostic performances of segmental flow metrics were higher than their territory counterparts; SMBF AUC = 0.761 vs. 0.737; MFR AUC = 0.699 vs. 0.676; and RFR AUC = 0.716 vs. 0.635, respectively (P < 0.001 for all). Similar results were obtained for per-vessel coronary artery disease (CAD) ≥70% stenosis categorization and per-patient analyses. Combinatorial analyses revealed that only SMBF significantly improved the diagnostic performance of PQ in CAD ≥50% stenoses, with PQ AUC = 0.730, PQ + segmental SMBF AUC = 0.782 (P < 0.01), and PQ + territory SMBF AUC = 0.771 (P < 0.05). No flow metric improved diagnostic performance when combined with PQ in CAD ≥70% stenoses.ConclusionAssessment of segmental MBF metrics with 18F-flurpiridaz is feasible and improves flow-based epicardial CAD detection. When combined with PQ, only SMBF provides additive diagnostic performance in moderate CAD.

Cardiotoxicity, or the development of unwarranted cardiovascular side-effects of oncologic therapies, can involve all aspects of cardiovascular disease. The development of cardiac fibrosis is a dreaded complication that leads to cardiac mechanical dysfunction, tachyarrhythmias, and an increase in cardiovascular mortality. This review details established and putative mechanisms leading to fibroblast activation, myofibroblast transdifferentiation, and the development of replacement or interstitial cardiac fibrosis as a consequence of cancer treatments. Clinical and imaging strategies for cardiac fibrosis assessment as well as emerging antifibrotic therapeutics will also be addressed.

Text analysis is increasingly used for consumer and marketing insight. But while work has shed light on what firms should say to customers, when to say those things (e.g. within an advertisement or sales interaction) is less clear. Service employees, for example, could adopt a certain speaking style at a conversation's start, end, or throughout. When might specific language features be beneficial? This article introduces a novel approach to address this question. To demonstrate its potential, we apply it to warm and competent language. Prior research suggests that an affective (i.e. warm) speaking approach leads customers to think employees are less competent, so a cognitive (competent) style should be prioritized. In contrast, our theorizing, analysis of hundreds of real service conversations from two firms across thousands of conversational moments (N  = 23,958), and four experiments (total N  = 1,589) offer a more nuanced perspective. Customers are more satisfied when employees use both cognitive and affective language but at separate, specific times. Ancillary analyses show how this method can be applied to other language features. Taken together, this work offers a method to explore when language matters, sheds new light on the warmth/competence trade-off, and highlights ways to improve the customer experience. Over the last 50+ years, there has been a huge rise in interest in consumer language research. This article spotlights the emergence and evolution of this area, identifying key themes and trends and highlighting topics for future research. Work has evolved from exploration of broad language concepts (e.g. rhetorics) to specific linguistic features (e.g. phonemes) and from monologues (e.g. advertiser to consumer) to two-way dialogues (e.g. consumer to service representative and back). We discuss future opportunities that arise from past trends and suggest two important shifts that prompt questions for future research: the new shift toward using voice (vs. hands) when interacting with objects and the ongoing shift toward using hands (vs. voices) to communicate with people. By synthesizing the past, and delineating a research agenda for the future, we hope to encourage more researchers to begin to explore this burgeoning area. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
