1. Magnetic configuration sweep control in Heliac type stellarators

Abstract

A novel magnetic configuration sweep control system for the TJ-II Heliac device is described. The system is prepared to establish a reference for plasma, torus or vessel current while the coil configuration currents are swept during a single plasma discharge. It can also be run in a special simulation mode, which does not require powering the TJ-II device, intended for commissioning and experiment preparation purposes. Preliminary tests with the system have shown its ability to perform rotational transform scans while establishing a waveform for torus current independently, despite variable plasma conditions. This opens up new experimental possibilities to study the influence of rotational transform and shear independently.

Abstract

Research is done on the structures of silane derivatives with one alkali atom M, SiX3M, where X stands for hydrogen or halogen atoms and M is Li or Na, which are studied ab initio with uncorrelated and correlated methods and a 6-311++G-(3df,pd) basis set. The nature of the bonding in the molecules in the experiment is analyzed.

Abstract

The main results obtained in the TJ-II stellarator in the last two years are reported. The most important topics investigated have been modelling and validation of impurity transport, validation of gyrokinetic simulations, turbulence characterisation, effect of magnetic configuration on transport, fuelling with pellet injection, fast particles and liquid metal plasma facing components. As regards impurity transport research, a number of working lines exploring several recently discovered effects have been developed: the effect of tangential drifts on stellarator neoclassical transport, the impurity flux driven by electric fields tangent to magnetic surfaces and attempts of experimental validation with Doppler reflectometry of the variation of the radial electric field on the flux surface. Concerning gyrokinetic simulations, two validation activities have been performed, the comparison with measurements of zonal flow relaxation in pellet-induced fast transients and the comparison with experimental poloidal variation of fluctuations amplitude. The impact of radial electric fields on turbulence spreading in the edge and scrape-off layer has been also experimentally characterized using a 2D Langmuir probe array. Another remarkable piece of work has been the investigation of the radial propagation of small temperature perturbations using transfer entropy. Research on the physics and modelling of plasma core fuelling with pellet and tracer-encapsulated solid-pellet injection has produced also relevant results. Neutral beam injection driven Alfvénic activity and its possible control by electron cyclotron current drive has been examined as well in TJ-II. Finally, recent results on alternative plasma facing components based on liquid metals are also presented This work has been carried out within the framework of the EUROfusion Consortium and has received funding from the Euratom research and training programme 2014–2018 under Grant Agreement No. 633053. Abstract

Fusion energy research has in the past 40 years focused primarily on the tokamak concept, but recent advances in plasma theory and computational power have led to renewed interest in stellarators. The largest and most sophisticated stellarator in the world, Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X), has just started operation, with the aim to show that the earlier weaknesses of this concept have been addressed successfully, and that the intrinsic advantages of the concept persist, also at plasma parameters approaching those of a future fusion power plant. Here we show the first physics results, obtained before plasma operation: that the carefully tailored topology of nested magnetic surfaces needed for good confinement is realized, and that the measured deviations are smaller than one part in 100,000. This is a significant step forward in stellarator research, since it shows that the complicated and delicate magnetic topology can be created and verified with the required accuracy.

Here the authors measure the magnetic field lines in the Wendelstein 7-X stellarator, confirming that the complicated design of the superconducting coils has been realized successfully.

Abstract

Proton transfer in hydrogen-bond systems formed by 4-methylimidazole in both neutral and protonated cationic forms and by acetate anion are studied by means of MP2/6-311++G(d,p) ab initio calculations. These two complexes model the histidine (neutral and protonated)-aspartate diad present in the active sites of enzymes the catalytic mechanism of which involves the formation of strong hydrogen bonds. We investigate the evolution of geometries, natural bond orbital populations of bonds and electron lone pairs, topological descriptors of the electron density, and spatial distributions of the electron localization function along the process N-H...O→N...H...O→N...H-O, which represents the stages of the H-transfer. Except for a sudden change in the population of electron lone pairs in N and O at the middle N···H···O stage, all the properties analyzed show a smooth continuous behavior along the covalent → hydrogen bond transit inherent to the transfer, without any discontinuity that could identify a formation or breaking of the hydrogen bond. This way, the distinction between covalent or hydrogen-bonding features is associated to subtle electron rearrangement at the intermolecular space. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The variation with the intermolecular distance of geometries, energies, and other properties dependent on the electron density p(r) are studied in three cyclic dimers linked by two hydrogen bonds: formic acid and formamide homodimers and the heterodimer formamide/formic acid complex. Topological features, energy densities and integrated atomic properties provided by AIM theory are calculated with ρ(r) obtained at B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) optimized geometries for a number of intermonomer distances covering large separations, equilibrium, and short distances. The variation with these distances of properties studied allows to characterize the nature of the interaction in A-H···B (A=N, O and B=O) hydrogen bonds. Whereas at large distances the attraction is purely electrostatic, quantum effects associated with redistributions of ρ(r) mainly around H and B atoms dominate the interaction in the neighborhood of equilibrium. Mutual penetration of the electron densities of these atoms leads to considerable reductions of their atomic volumes and associated polarization effects as well as energetic stabilization of atom A. Although the interaction in this range of intermonomer separations displays noncovalent features, when the dimers move at distances shorter than equilibrium, characteristics typical of covalent interactions begin to appear while the systems leave the planar structures presented until then. Abstract

The variation with the intermolecular distance of features in hydrogen bond (HB) dimers dependent on the electron density ρ(r) are studied in four complexes representative of weak/medium HB interactions. Topological properties, energy densities and integrated atomic properties are obtained with ρ(r) of dimers at B3LYP/6-311 + +G(d,p) optimized structures obtained upon fully relaxing the geometry of monomers. The dependence of A-H···B bond properties on intermolecular R(H···B) distances allows to characterize the nature of the interaction as monomers move nearer from infinite separation. At long distances the interaction is only electrostatic while for separations about 1 Å larger than the equilibrium distance R[sub eq], quantum effects arising from ρ(r) begin to dominate. In the immediate neighborhood of R[sub eq] the interaction is mainly led by the stabilization of the H-donor due in turn to energy lowerings in A and B atoms associated to polarization effects. The mutual penetration of electron densities of donor and acceptor monomers provokes a considerable reduction of atomic volumes for H and B atoms which reveals in the form of redistribution rather than transfer of charge. This range of distances exhibits noncovalent bond features but shortly after, when monomers approximate a few tenths of Å below R[sub eq], characteristics typical of covalent interactions begin to appear while the rate of change of all the ρ(r)-dependent properties increases rapidly. © 2001 American Institute of Physics. Abstract

Ab initio relativistic effective potentials (REP) for first row transition metals show large errors in excitation energies between s2dn, s1dn+1, and dn+2 states if only 4s and 3d electrons are included in the valence space (Ar core). These errors are diminished when the potentials are generated including also 3s and 3p electrons in the valence space (Ne core), but thus one of the main advantages of the REP procedure is lost. The origin of such errors in Ar core potentials is first analyzed in this work and a modification to their construction is proposed which, while retaining the Ar core choice, clearly improves the general performance of the potentials. Abstract

Transport properties of TJ-II are explored performing perturbative experiments and taking advantage of TJ-II flexibility. Rotational transform can be varied in a wide range, which allows one to introduce low order rationals and to study their effect on transport. On the other hand, confinement properties can be studied at very different rotational transform values and for different values of magnetic shear: Experiments on influence of the magnetic shear on confinement are reported. In these cases a Ohmic current has been induced in TJ-II plasma to modify magnetic shear and to evaluate itsd effect on confinement, showing that negative shear improves the confinement. Heat transport is also reduced by locating a low order rational near the power deposition profile. Plasma potential profiles have been recently measured in some configurations up to the plasma core with the Heavy Ion Beam Probe (HIBP) diagnostic and the electric field values measured in low-density plasmas are consistent with neoclassical calculations near the plasma core. Plasma edge turbulent transport has been studied in configurations that are marginally stable due to decreased magnetic well. Results show a dynamical coupling between gradients and turbulent transport. Finally, cold pulse propagation has been studied showing ballistic non diffusive propagation.

Abstract

This paper is devoted to the presentation of the most relevant recent Physics results obtained in the TJ-II flexible heliac. Firstly ECRH modulation and plasma breakdown studies are summarised; then the particle control techniques used to obtain reproducible discharges with density under control are presented. Transport studies show internal heat transport barriers that reduce heat conductivity to neoclassical values, and ELM-like transport events, similar to those observed in tokamaks and in other stellarators before and during H mode transition. Evidence of ExB sheared has been observed both in the proximity of rational surfaces. Finally, a high resolution Thomsom Scattering system has shown Te and ne profile structures.
