Abstract

The consecutive magnetic ordering of the Ho and Ru ions in the pyrochlore Ho2Ru2O7 and their interplay are investigated by neutron scattering, magnetic and specific heat measurements. The Ru magnetic moments order at 95 K into an easy-plane antiferromagnetic state, while the Ho moments order at 1.55 K into an unsaturated ferromagnetic state that retains an extensive ground state entropy and present complex spin dynamics throughout the low temperature phase. These unexpected features are analyzed in terms of a fragmented ferromagnetic state equivalent to the pyrochlore kagome ice. Selection of this unusual state relies on a subtle compromise between long-range ferromagnetic interactions between holmium moments and a repulsive cubic field, both mediated by the ruthenium lattice., Comment: 15 pages, 13 figures

Abstract

Magnetic quantum oscillations (MQO) of Hall coefficient are measured in rare-earth tritelluride TmTe$_{3}$ and shown to be much stronger and persist to higher temperature than the Shubnikov oscillations. It is general for MQO in strongly anisotropic metals, and the combined measurements of Hall and diagonal magnetoresistance provide useful informations about the electronic structure. The ratio of their MQO amplitudes depends linearly on magnetic field, and its slope gives a simple and accurate measurement tool of the electron mean free time and its temperature dependence., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures

Abstract

Geometrical frustration, as in pyrochlore lattices made of corner-sharing tetrahedra, precludes the onset of conventional magnetic ordering, enabling the stabilization of fluctuating spin states at low temperature. Disorder is a subtle ingredient that can modify the nature of these exotic non-ordered phases. Here, we study the interplay between disorder and magnetic frustration in the new pyrochlore Tb$_{2}$ScNbO$_{7}$ where the non magnetic site presents a charge disorder Nb$^{5+}$/Sc$^{3+}$. Its quantification with sophisticated diffraction techniques (electrons, X-rays, neutrons) allows us to estimate the distribution of the splitting of the magnetic Tb$^{3+}$ non-Kramers ground state doublets and to compare it with excitations measured in inelastic neutron scattering. Combining macroscopic and neutron scattering measurements, we show that a clear spin glass transition at 1 K stems out while retaining strong spin liquid correlations. Our results suggest that Tb$_{2}$ScNbO$_{7}$ stabilizes one of the novel disorder induced quantum spin liquid or topological glassy phases recently proposed theoretically., Comment: Main text: 9 pages, 5 figures ; Supplemental Material: 6 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

VI$_{3}$ is a ferromagnet with planar honeycomb sheets of bonded V$^{3+}$ ions held together by van der Waals forces. We apply neutron spectroscopy to measure the two dimensional ($J/J_{c} \approx 17$) magnetic excitations in the ferromagnetic phase, finding two energetically gapped ($\Delta \approx k_{B} T_{c} \approx$ 55 K) and dispersive excitations. We apply a multi-level spin wave formalism to describe the spectra in terms of two coexisting domains hosting differing V$^{3+}$ orbital ground states built from contrasting distorted octahedral environments. This analysis fits a common nearest neighbor in-plane exchange coupling ($J$=-8.6 $\pm$ 0.3 meV) between V$^{3+}$ sites. The distorted local crystalline electric field combined with spin-orbit coupling provides the needed magnetic anisotropy for spatially long-ranged two-dimensional ferromagnetism in VI$_{3}$., Comment: (main text - 7 pages, 4 figures; supplementary information - 13 pages, 9 figures, to be published in Phys. Abstract

Co$^{2+}$ ions in an octahedral crystal field, stabilise a j$_{eff}$ = 1/2 ground state with an orbital degree of freedom and have been recently put forward for realising Kitaev interactions, a prediction we have tested by investigating spin dynamics in two cobalt honeycomb lattice compounds, Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$ and Na$_3$Co$_2$SbO$_6$, using inelastic neutron scattering. We used linear spin wave theory to show that the magnetic spectra can be reproduced with a spin Hamiltonian including a dominant Kitaev nearest-neighbour interaction, weaker Heisenberg interactions up to the third neighbour and bond-dependent off-diagonal exchange interactions. Beyond the Kitaev interaction that alone would induce a quantum spin liquid state, the presence of these additional couplings is responsible for the zigzag-type long-range magnetic ordering observed at low temperature in both compounds. These results provide evidence for the realization of Kitaev-type coupling in cobalt-based materials, despite hosting a weaker spin-orbit coupling than their 4d and 5d counterparts.

Abstract

$\alpha$-CoV$_{2}$O$_{6}$ consists of $j_{\mathrm{eff}}={1 \over 2}$ Ising spins located on an anisotropic triangular motif with magnetization plateaus in an applied field. We combine neutron diffraction with low temperature magnetization to investigate the magnetic periodicity in the vicinity of these plateaus. We find these steps to be characterized by metastable and spatially short-range ($\xi\sim$ 10 $\r{A}$) magnetic correlations with antiphase boundaries defining a local periodicity of $\langle \hat{T}^{2} \rangle =\ \uparrow \downarrow$ to $\langle \hat{T}^{3} \rangle =\ \uparrow \uparrow \downarrow$, and $\langle \hat{T}^{4} \rangle=\ \uparrow \uparrow \downarrow \downarrow$ or $\uparrow \uparrow \uparrow \downarrow$ spin arrangements. Abstract

Electronic properties of V$_2$OPO$_4$ have been investigated by means of hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (HAXPES) and subsequent theoretical calculations. The V 1$s$ and 2$p$ HAXPES spectra are consistent with the charge ordering of V$^{2+}$ and V$^{3+}$. The binding energy difference between the V$^{2+}$ and V$^{3+}$ components is unexpectedly large indicating large bonding-antibonding splitting between them in the final states of core level photoemission. The V 1$s$ HAXPES spectrum exhibits a charge transfer satellite which can be analyzed by configuration interaction calculations on a V$_2$O$_9$ cluster. The V 3$d$ spectral weight near the Fermi level is assigned to the 3$d$ $t_{2g}$ orbitals of the V$^{2+}$ site. The broad V 3$d$ spectral distribution is consistent with the strong hybridization between V$^{2+}$ and V$^{3+}$ in the ground state. The core level and valence band HAXPES results indicate substantial charge transfer from the V$^{2+}$ site to the V$^{3+}$ site.7 figure, Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

CoO has an odd number of electrons in its unit cell, and therefore is expected to be metallic. Yet, CoO is strongly insulating owing to significant electronic correlations, thus classifying it as a Mott insulator. We investigate the magnetic fluctuations in CoO using neutron spectroscopy. The strong and spatially far-reaching exchange constants reported in [Sarte et al. Phys. Rev. B 98 024415 (2018)], combined with the single-ion spin-orbit coupling of similar magnitude [Cowley et al. Phys. Rev. B 88, 205117 (2013)] results in significant mixing between $j_{eff}$ spin-orbit levels in the low temperature magnetically ordered phase. The high degree of entanglement, combined with the structural domains originating from the Jahn-Teller structural distortion at $\sim$ 300 K, make the magnetic excitation spectrum highly structured in both energy and momentum. We extend previous theoretical work on PrTl$_{3}$ [Buyers et al. Phys. Rev. B 11, 266 (1975)] to construct a mean-field and multi-level spin exciton model employing the aforementioned spin exchange and spin-orbit coupling parameters for coupled Co$^{2+}$ ions on a rocksalt lattice. This parameterization, based on a tetragonally distorted type-II antiferromagnetic unit cell, captures both the sharp low energy excitations at the magnetic zone center, and the energy broadened peaks at the zone boundary. However, the model fails to describe the momentum dependence of the excitations at high energy transfers, where the neutron response decays faster with momentum than the Co$^{2+}$ form factor. Abstract

The antiferromagnetic mixed valence ternary oxide $\alpha$-CoV$_{3}$O$_{8}$ displays disorder on the Co$^{2+}$ site that is inherent to the $Ibam$ space group. The zero field structural and dynamic properties of $\alpha$-CoV$_{3}$O$_{8}$~have been investigated using a combination of neutron and x-ray diffraction, DC susceptibility, and neutron spectroscopy. The low temperature magnetic and structural properties are consistent with a random macroscopic distribution of Co$^{2+}$ over the 16$k$ metal sites. However, by applying the sum rules of neutron scattering we observe the collective magnetic excitations are parameterized with an ordered Co$^{2+}$ arrangement and critical scattering consistent with a three dimensional Ising universality class. The low energy spectrum is well-described by Co$^{2+}$ cations coupled $via$ a three dimensional network composed of competing ferromagnetic and stronger antiferromagnetic superexchange within the $ab$ plane and along $c$, respectively. While the extrapolated Weiss temperature is near zero, the 3D dimensionality results in long range antiferromagnetic order at $T\rm{_{N}}\sim$ 19 K. A crystal field analysis finds two bands of excitations separated in energy at $\hbar \omega$ $\sim$ 5 meV and 25 meV, consistent with a $j\rm{_{eff}}=\frac{1}{2}$ ground state with little mixing between spin-orbit split Kramers doublets. A comparison of our results to the random 3D Ising magnets and other compounds where spin-orbit coupling is present indicate that the presence of an orbital degree of freedom, in combination with strong crystal field effects and well-separated $j\rm{_{eff}}$ manifolds may play a key role in making the dynamics largely insensitive to disorder., Comment: 25 pages, 8 figures, 1 figure in Appendix

Abstract

Neutron spectroscopy was applied to study the magnetic interactions of orbitally degenerate Co$^{2+}$ on a host MgO rocksalt lattice where no long range spin or orbital order exists. The paramagnetic nature of the substituted monoxide Co$_{0.03}$Mg$_{0.97}$O allows for the disentanglement of spin-exchange and spin-orbit interactions. By considering the prevalent excitations from Co$^{2+}$ spin pairs, we extract 7 exchange constants out to the fourth coordination shell. An antiferromagnetic next nearest neighbor 180$^{\circ}$ exchange interaction is dominant, however dual ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions are observed for pairings with other pathways. These interactions can be understood in terms of a combination of orbital degeneracy in the $t_{2g}$ channel and the Goodenough-Kanamori-Anderson (GKA) rules. Abstract

The Advanced GAmma Tracking Array (AGATA) is a European project to develop and operate the next generation gamma-ray spectrometer. AGATA is based on the technique of gamma-ray energy tracking in electrically segmented high-purity germanium crystals. This technique requires the accurate determination of the energy, time and position of every interaction as a gamma ray deposits its energy within the detector volume. Reconstruction of the full interaction path results in a detector with very high efficiency and excellent spectral response. The realization of gamma-ray tracking and AGATA is a result of many technical advances. These include the development of encapsulated highly-segmented germanium detectors assembled in a triple cluster detector cryostat, an electronics system with fast digital sampling and a data acquisition system to process the data at a high rate. The full characterization of the crystals was measured and compared with detector-response simulations. This enabled pulse-shape analysis algorithms, to extract energy, time and position, to be employed. In addition, tracking algorithms for event reconstruction were developed. The first phase of AGATA is now complete and operational in its first physics campaign. In the future AGATA will be moved between laboratories in Europe and operated in a series of campaigns to take advantage of the different beams and facilities available to maximize its science output. Abstract

The next generation of 4π arrays for high-precision γ-ray spectroscopy AGATA will consist of γ-ray tracking detectors. They represent high-fold segmented Ge detectors and a front-end electronics, based on digital signal processing techniques, which allows to extract energy, timing and spatial information on the interactions of a γ-ray in the Ge detector by pulse shape analysis of its signals. Utilizing the information on the positions of the interaction points and the energies released at each point the tracks of the γ-rays in a Ge shell can be reconstructed in three dimensions on the basis of the Compton-scattering formula.

Abstract

α\ud−\udCo\udV\ud2\udO\ud6\ud consists of \udj\udeff\ud=\ud1\ud2\ud Ising spins located on an anisotropic triangular motif with magnetization plateaus in an applied field. We combine neutron diffraction with low temperature magnetization to investigate the magnetic periodicity in the vicinity of these plateaus. We find these steps to be characterized by metastable and spatially short-range (\udξ\ud∼\ud10\ud Å) magnetic correlations with antiphase boundaries defining a local periodicity of \ud⟨\udˆ\udT\ud2\ud⟩\ud=\ud↑\ud⏐\ud⏐\ud⏐\ud⏐\ud↓\ud to \ud⟨\udˆ\udT\ud3\ud⟩\ud=\ud↑\ud⏐\ud⏐\ud↑\ud⏐\ud⏐\ud⏐\ud⏐\ud↓\ud and \ud⟨\udˆ\udT\ud4\ud⟩\ud=\ud↑\ud⏐\ud⏐\ud↑\ud⏐\ud⏐\ud⏐\ud⏐\ud↓\ud⏐\ud⏐\ud↓\ud or \ud↑\ud↑\ud↑\ud↓\ud spin arrangements. This shows the presence of spatially short range and metastable/hysteretic, commensurate magnetism in Ising magnetization steps.

Abstract

International audience; The antiferromagnetic mixed valence ternary oxide α-CoV3O8 displays disorder on the Co 2+ site that is inherent to the Ibam space group resulting in a local selection rule requiring one Co 2+ and one V 4+ reside next to each other, thus giving rise to an intrinsically disordered magnet without the need for any external influences such as chemical dopants or porous media. The zero field structural and dynamic properties of α-CoV3O8 have been investigated using a combination of neutron and x-ray diffraction, DC susceptibility, and neutron spectroscopy. The low temperature magnetic and structural properties are consistent with a random macroscopic distribution of Co 2+ over the 16k metal sites. However, by applying the sum rules of neutron scattering we observe the collective magnetic excitations are parameterized with an ordered Co 2+ arrangement and critical scattering consistent with a three dimensional Ising universality class. The low energy spectrum is well-described by Co 2+ cations coupled via a three dimensional network composed of competing ferromagnetic and stronger antiferromagnetic superexchange within the ab plane and along c, respectively. While the extrapolated Weiss temperature is near zero, the 3D dimensionality results in long range antiferromagnetic order at T N ∼ 19 K. A crystal field analysis finds two bands of excitations separated in energy at ω ∼ 5 meV and 25 meV, consistent with a j eff = 1 2 ground state with little mixing between spin-orbit split Kramers doublets. A comparison of our results to the random 3D Ising magnets and other compounds where spin-orbit coupling is present indicate that the presence of an orbital degree of freedom, in combination with strong crystal field effects and well-separated j eff manifolds may play a key role in making the dynamics largely insensitive to disorder.

Abstract

Neutron spectroscopy was applied to study the magnetic interactions of orbitally degenerate Co$^{2+}$ on a host MgO rocksalt lattice where no long range spin or orbital order exists. The paramagnetic nature of the substituted monoxide Co$_{0.03}$Mg$_{0.97}$O allows for the disentanglement of spin-exchange and spin-orbit interactions. By considering the prevalent excitations from Co$^{2+}$ spin pairs, we extract 7 exchange constants out to the fourth coordination shell. An antiferromagnetic next nearest neighbor 180$^{\circ}$ exchange interaction is dominant, however dual ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions are observed for pairings with other pathways. These interactions can be understood in terms of a combination of orbital degeneracy in the $t_{2g}$ channel and the Goodenough-Kanamori-Anderson (GKA) rules. Abstract

WOS: 000259692300032, The Euroball array has been used to search for linking transitions between the superdeformed (SD) and the normal deformed (ND) wells in (151)Tb. Many. rays in the energy range 2-4 MeV have been observed in coincidence with the yrast SD band. It is proposed that the highest energy transition of 3748 keV and the strongest line (2818 keV) of the previously observed transitions both decay from the same SD level as their links with the ND states have been identified. The current spectra have insufficient statistics to completely identify the decay point in the SD band. Theoretical calculations covering SD bands in the A approximate to 150 region enable the two possible spin assignments to be compared with experimental data on proposed links in (149)Gd and (152)Dy. It is concluded that the energy of the lowest SD band member in (151)Tb has an excitation energy of 12861 keV and a spin of 65/2(+)., EU [EUROVIV: HPRI-CT-1999-00078]; Science and Technology Facilities Council [ST/J000108/1, PP/F000677/1], The Euroball project was a collaboration between Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Sweden, and the United Kingdom. Abstract

A detailed study of known and new SD bands in Tb isotopes has been performed with the use of the EUROBALL IV gamma-ray array. The high-statistics data set has allowed for the extension of known SD bands at low and high spins by new gamma-ray transitions. These transitions, as it turns out, correspond to the rotational frequencies where the principal superdeformed gaps (Z=66,N=86) close giving rise to up- or down-bending mechanisms. This enables to attribute the underlying theoretical configurations with much higher confidence as compared to the previous identifications. Five new SD bands have been discovered, three of them assigned to the 152Tb and the two others to the 151Tb nuclei. Nuclear mean-field calculations have been used to interpret the structure of known SD bands as well as of the new ones in terms of nucleonic configurations.

Abstract

Matière Nucléaire; Linking transitions between the superdeformed (SD) and the normal deformed (ND) wells have been searched in $^{151}$Tb nucleus. Two experiments of 5 and 17 days have been performed with EUROBALL IV. Transitions of 2818 keV and 3748 keV with intensities of about 1 % relative to the yrast SD band have been observed. Their decay-out properties are discussed in the text. In addition the eight known SD bands have been extended towards higher rotational frequencies where orbital crossings are observed. For the first time, weakly populated collective ND structures, likely triaxial, similar to the ones recently identified in $^{152}$Dy, $^{153}$Ho and ${155}$Er nuclei have been observed in ${151}$Tb. The SD and ND structures are interpreted in the frame of Woods-Saxon theoretical calculations.

Abstract

The next generation of 4π arrays for high-precision γ-ray spectroscopy AGATA will consist of γ-ray tracking detectors. They represent high-fold segmented Ge detectors and a front-end electronics, based on digital signal processing techniques, which allows to extract energy, timing and spatial information on the interactions of a γ-ray in the Ge detector by pulse shape analysis of its signals. Utilizing the information on the positions of the interaction points and the energies released at each point the tracks of the γ-rays in a Ge shell can be reconstructed in three dimensions on the basis of the Compton-scattering formula.

A long run performed with EUROGAM II allowed remeasuring the Gd-149 superdeformed (SD) band 1. The Delta I = 4 bifurcation in band 1 is confirmed and two resolved gamma-ray transitions linking the SD band 1 and the normal deformed states have been observed.
