Abstract

This work compares the effect of using a solar reactor against a conventional electrical furnace to obtain carbon materials by pyrolysis of a lignocellulosic precursor. The solar reactor is directly irradiated and includes modifications to improve the control of the process and the reproducibility of solar experiments. A bagasse of agave creole was selected as the lignocellulosic precursor or biomass to obtain carbon materials at temperatures of 700 °C. Comparing carbons produced by conventional and solar pyrolysis, higher crystallinity and lower hydrophilicity are evident in the former. Moreover, conventional pyrolysis tends to promote a more homogeneous porous structure in comparison to solar pyrolysis. However, within the spectrum of solar carbons produced, the morphology of biomass plays a crucial role in influencing the chemical composition and porosity properties. Specifically, the use of fibers instead of powders to produce carbons through solar pyrolysis results in a more homogeneous porosity, attributed to an enhanced volumetric absorption of solar radiation. This modification leads to a significant improvement in capacitance, increasing from 125 F/g to 175 F/g at 5 mV/s in aqueous electrolytes. The carbons from the solar furnace are reproducible, underlying the potential of the proposed process towards a sustainable alternative. To achieve a theoretical reference, the pyrolysis process was mimic trough Reactive Molecular Dynamics calculations modeling the initial structural conditions of agave biomass with its corresponding lignocellulosic components and considering analogous thermal conditions. The resulting carbon structures at the end of the simulations showed structural properties that are consistent with those observed in the pair distribution functions obtained from XRD and the pore size distribution from physisorption analyses. 8. Effect of carbonaceous support between graphite oxide and reduced graphene oxide with anchored Co3O4 microspheres as electrode-active materials in a solid-state electrochemical capacitor

Abstract

Hydrothermally synthesized CoO microspheres were anchored to graphite oxide (GO) and thermally reduced graphene oxide (rGO) composites at different cobalt weight percentages (1, 10, and 100 wt%). The composite materials served as the active materials in bulk electrodes for two-electrode cell electrochemical capacitors (ECCs). GO/CoO–1 exhibited a high energy density of 35 W kg with a specific capacitance (C) of 196 F g at a maximum charge density of 1 A g. rGO/CoO-100 presented high specific power output values of up to 23.41 kW h kg with linear energy density behavior for the charge densities applied between 0.03 and 1 A g. The composite materials showed Coulombic efficiencies of 96 and 93 % for GO/CoO–1 and rGO/CoO–100 respectively. The enhancement of capacitive performance is attributed to the oxygenated groups in the GO ECC and the specific area in the rGO ECC. These results offer an interesting insight into the type of carbonaceous support used for graphene derivative electrode materials in ECCs together with CoO loading to improve capacitance performance in terms of specific energy density and specific power. 14. Mixed phase iron oxides thin layers by atmospheric-pressure chemical vapor deposition method.

Abstract

This paper provides a simple method for producing a metal oxide thin layer methodology by atmospheric pressure chemical vapor deposition (APCVD) synthesis over stainless steel substrates. This methodology enables the formation of thin iron oxide layers at its performance at various temperatures of 330 °C, 430 °C, and 530 °C. The deposition arises from thermal decomposition of the iron organometallic precursor Fe 3 (CO) 12 , forming a thin layer of iron oxide is, by the ozone present in the reaction chamber promoting the deposition of the iron oxide particles over the substrate. The Raman characterization suggest that at 330 °C, a mixture of hematite and magnetite is predominant on the as deposited substrates, also hematite modes show to be more pronounced as the band at 300 cm -1 narrows. Conversely, magnetite is prominent at higher synthesis temperatures, exhibiting a more intense Eg5 mode at 680 cm -1 . The particles exhibit a uniform morphology, with both metal oxide phases coexisting. 15. Consolidated Bioprocess for Bioethanol Production from Raw Flour of Brosimum alicastrum Seeds Using the Native Strain of Trametes hirsuta Bm-2.

Abstract

Consolidated bioprocessing (CBP), which integrates biological pretreatment, enzyme production, saccharification, and fermentation, is a promising operational strategy for cost-effective ethanol production from biomass. In this study, the use of a native strain of Trametes hirsuta (Bm-2) was evaluated for bioethanol production from Brosimum alicastrum in a CBP. The raw seed flour obtained from the ramon tree contained 61% of starch, indicating its potential as a raw material for bioethanol production. Quantitative assays revealed that the Bm-2 strain produced the amylase enzyme with activity of 193.85 U/mL. The Bm-2 strain showed high tolerance to ethanol stress and was capable of directly producing ethanol from raw flour at a concentration of 13 g/L, with a production yield of 123.4 mL/kg flour. This study demonstrates the potential of T. hirsuta Bm-2 for starch-based ethanol production in a consolidated bioprocess to be implemented in the biofuel industry. The residual biomass after fermentation showed an average protein content of 22.5%, suggesting that it could also be considered as a valuable biorefinery co-product for animal feeding., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.
