Abstract

We study the constraint on $f(R)$ gravity that can be obtained by photometric primary probes of the Euclid mission. Our focus is the dependence of the constraint on the theoretical modelling of the nonlinear matter power spectrum. In the Hu-Sawicki $f(R)$ gravity model, we consider four different predictions for the ratio between the power spectrum in $f(R)$ and that in $\Lambda$CDM: a fitting formula, the halo model reaction approach, ReACT and two emulators based on dark matter only $N$-body simulations, FORGE and e-Mantis. These predictions are added to the MontePython implementation to predict the angular power spectra for weak lensing (WL), photometric galaxy clustering and their cross-correlation. By running Markov Chain Monte Carlo, we compare constraints on parameters and investigate the bias of the recovered $f(R)$ parameter if the data are created by a different model. For the pessimistic setting of WL, one dimensional bias for the $f(R)$ parameter, $\log_{10}|f_{R0}|$, is found to be $0.5 \sigma$ when FORGE is used to create the synthetic data with $\log_{10}|f_{R0}| =-5.301$ and fitted by e-Mantis. The impact of baryonic physics on WL is studied by using a baryonification emulator BCemu. For the optimistic setting, the $f(R)$ parameter and two main baryon parameters are well constrained despite the degeneracies among these parameters. However, the difference in the nonlinear dark matter prediction can be compensated by the adjustment of baryon parameters, and the one-dimensional marginalised constraint on $\log_{10}|f_{R0}|$ is biased. This bias can be avoided in the pessimistic setting at the expense of weaker constraints. For the pessimistic setting, using the $\Lambda$CDM synthetic data for WL, we obtain the prior-independent upper limit of $\log_{10}|f_{R0}|< -5.6$. Abstract

The Euclid mission of the European Space Agency will provide weak gravitational lensing and galaxy clustering surveys that can be used to constrain the standard cosmological model and its extensions, with an opportunity to test the properties of dark matter beyond the minimal cold dark matter paradigm. We present forecasts from the combination of these surveys on the parameters describing four interesting and representative non-minimal dark matter models: a mixture of cold and warm dark matter relics; unstable dark matter decaying either into massless or massive relics; and dark matter experiencing feeble interactions with relativistic relics. We model these scenarios at the level of the non-linear matter power spectrum using emulators trained on dedicated N-body simulations. We use a mock Euclid likelihood to fit mock data and infer error bars on dark matter parameters marginalised over other parameters. We find that the Euclid photometric probe (alone or in combination with CMB data from the Planck satellite) will be sensitive to the effect of each of the four dark matter models considered here. The improvement will be particularly spectacular for decaying and interacting dark matter models. With Euclid, the bounds on some dark matter parameters can improve by up to two orders of magnitude compared to current limits. We discuss the dependence of predicted uncertainties on different assumptions: inclusion of photometric galaxy clustering data, minimum angular scale taken into account, modelling of baryonic feedback effects. We conclude that the Euclid mission will be able to measure quantities related to the dark sector of particle physics with unprecedented sensitivity. This will provide important information for model building in high-energy physics. Abstract

The current standard model of cosmology successfully describes a variety of measurements, but the nature of its main ingredients, dark matter and dark energy, remains unknown. Euclid is a medium-class mission in the Cosmic Vision 2015-2025 programme of the European Space Agency (ESA) that will provide high-resolution optical imaging, as well as near-infrared imaging and spectroscopy, over about 14,000 deg^2 of extragalactic sky. In addition to accurate weak lensing and clustering measurements that probe structure formation over half of the age of the Universe, its primary probes for cosmology, these exquisite data will enable a wide range of science. This paper provides a high-level overview of the mission, summarising the survey characteristics, the various data-processing steps, and data products. Abstract

The Euclid mission of the European Space Agency will deliver weak gravitational lensing and galaxy clustering surveys that can be used to constrain the standard cosmological model and extensions thereof. We present forecasts from the combination of these surveys on the sensitivity to cosmological parameters including the summed neutrino mass $M_\nu$ and the effective number of relativistic species $N_{\rm eff}$ in the standard $\Lambda$CDM scenario and in a scenario with dynamical dark energy ($w_0 w_a$CDM). We compare the accuracy of different algorithms predicting the nonlinear matter power spectrum for such models. We then validate several pipelines for Fisher matrix and MCMC forecasts, using different theory codes, algorithms for numerical derivatives, and assumptions concerning the non-linear cut-off scale. The Euclid primary probes alone will reach a sensitivity of $\sigma(M_\nu)=$56meV in the $\Lambda$CDM+$M_\nu$ model, whereas the combination with CMB data from Planck is expected to achieve $\sigma(M_\nu)=$23meV and raise the evidence for a non-zero neutrino mass to at least the $2.6\sigma$ level. This can be pushed to a $4\sigma$ detection if future CMB data from LiteBIRD and CMB Stage-IV are included. In combination with Planck, Euclid will also deliver tight constraints on $\Delta N_{\rm eff}< 0.144$ (95%CL) in the $\Lambda$CDM+$M_\nu$+$N_{\rm eff}$ model, or $\Delta N_{\rm eff}< 0.063$ when future CMB data are included. When floating $(w_0, w_a)$, we find that the sensitivity to $N_{\rm eff}$ remains stable, while that to $M_\nu$ degrades at most by a factor 2. This work illustrates the complementarity between the Euclid spectroscopic and imaging/photometric surveys and between Euclid and CMB constraints. Abstract

We investigate the approximations needed to efficiently predict the large-scale clustering of matter and dark matter halos in beyond-$\Lambda$CDM scenarios. We examine the normal branch of the Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati model, the Hu-Sawicki $f(R)$ model, a slowly evolving dark energy, an interacting dark energy model and massive neutrinos. For each, we test approximations for the perturbative kernel calculations, including the omission of screening terms and the use of perturbative kernels based on the Einstein-de Sitter universe; we explore different infrared-resummation schemes, tracer bias models and a linear treatment of massive neutrinos; we employ two models for redshift space distortions, the Taruya-Nishimishi-Saito prescription and the Effective Field Theory of Large-Scale Structure. This work further provides a preliminary validation of the codes being considered by Euclid for the spectroscopic clustering probe in beyond-$\Lambda$CDM scenarios. We calculate and compare the $\chi^2$ statistic to assess the different modelling choices. This is done by fitting the spectroscopic clustering predictions to measurements from numerical simulations and perturbation theory-based mock data. We compare the behaviour of this statistic in the beyond-$\Lambda$CDM cases, as a function of the maximum scale included in the fit, to the baseline $\Lambda$CDM case. We find that the Einstein-de Sitter approximation without screening is surprisingly accurate for all cases when comparing to the halo clustering monopole and quadrupole obtained from simulations. Our results suggest that the inclusion of multiple redshift bins, higher-order multipoles, higher-order clustering statistics (such as the bispectrum) and photometric probes such as weak lensing, will be essential to extract information on massive neutrinos, modified gravity and dark energy., Comment: 29 pages, 10 figures, 4 tables, 3 appendices. Abstract

The future Euclid space satellite mission will offer an invaluable opportunity to constrain modifications to Einstein's general relativity at cosmic scales. We focus on modified gravity models characterised, at linear scales, by a scale-independent growth of perturbations while featuring different testable types of derivative screening mechanisms at smaller non-linear scales. We considered three specific models, namely JBD, a scalar-tensor theory with a flat potential, the nDGP gravity, a braneworld model in which our Universe is a four-dimensional brane embedded in a five-dimensional Minkowski space-time, and $k$-mouflage (KM) gravity, an extension of $k$-essence scenarios with a universal coupling of the scalar field to matter. In preparation for real data, we provide forecasts from spectroscopic and photometric primary probes by Euclid on the cosmological parameters and the additional parameters of the models, respectively, $\omega_{\rm BD}$, $\Omega_{\rm rc}$ and $\epsilon_{2,0}$. The forecast analysis employs the Fisher matrix method applied to weak lensing (WL); photometric galaxy clustering (GCph), spectroscopic galaxy clustering (GCsp) and the cross-correlation (XC) between GCph and WL. In an optimistic setting at 68.3\% confidence interval, we find the following percentage relative errors with Euclid alone: for $\log_{10}{\omega_{\rm BD}}$, with a fiducial value of $\omega_{\rm BD}=800$, 27.1\% using GCsp alone, 3.6\% using GCph+WL+XC and 3.2\% using GCph+WL+XC+GCsp; for $\log_{10}{\Omega_{\rm rc}}$, with a fiducial value of $\Omega_{\rm rc}=0.25$, we find 93.4\%, 20\% and 15\% respectively; and finally, for $\epsilon_{2,0}=-0.04$, we find 3.4\%, 0.15\%, and 0.14\%. Abstract

$\textit{Euclid}$ will provide a powerful compilation of data including spectroscopic redshifts, the angular clustering of galaxies, weak lensing cosmic shear, and the cross-correlation of these last two photometric observables. In this study we extend recently presented $\textit{Euclid}$ forecasts into the Hu-Sawicki $f(R)$ cosmological model, a popular extension of the Hilbert-Einstein action that introduces an universal modified gravity force in a scale-dependent way. Our aim is to estimate how well future $\textit{Euclid}$ data will be able to constrain the extra parameter of the theory, $f_{R0}$, for the range in which this parameter is still allowed by current observations. For the spectroscopic probe, we use a phenomenological approach for the scale dependence of the growth of perturbations in the terms related to baryon acoustic oscillations and redshift-space distortions. For the photometric observables, we use a fitting formula that captures the modifications in the non-linear matter power spectrum caused by the $f(R)$ model. We show that, in an optimistic setting, and for a fiducial value of $f_{R0} = 5 \times 10^{-6}$, $\textit{Euclid}$ alone will be able to constrain the additional parameter $\log f_{R0}$ at the $3\%$ level, using spectroscopic galaxy clustering alone; at the $1.4\%$ level, using the combination of photometric probes on their own; and at the $1\%$ level, using the combination of spectroscopic and photometric observations. This last constraint corresponds to an error of the order of $6 \times 10^{-7}$ at the $1\sigma$ level on the model parameter $f_{R0} = 5 \times 10^{-6}$. We report also forecasted constraints for $f_{R0} = 5 \times 10^{-5}$ and $f_{R0} = 5 \times 10^{-7}$ and show that in the optimistic scenario, $\textit{Euclid}$ will be able to distinguish these models from $\Lambda\mathrm{CDM}$ at more than 3$\sigma$. Abstract

The Euclid mission of the European Space Agency will perform a survey of weak lensing cosmic shear and galaxy clustering in order to constrain cosmological models and fundamental physics. We expand and adjust the mock Euclid likelihoods of the MontePython software in order to match the exact recipes used in previous Euclid Fisher matrix forecasts for several probes: weak lensing cosmic shear, photometric galaxy clustering, the cross-correlation between the latter observables, and spectroscopic galaxy clustering. We also establish which precision settings are required when running the Einstein-Boltzmann solvers CLASS and CAMB in the context of Euclid. For the minimal cosmological model, extended to include dynamical dark energy, we perform Fisher matrix forecasts based directly on a numerical evaluation of second derivatives of the likelihood with respect to model parameters. We compare our results with those of other forecasting methods and tools. We show that such MontePython forecasts agree very well with previous Fisher forecasts published by the Euclid Collaboration, and also, with new forecasts produced by the CosmicFish code, now interfaced directly with the two Einstein-Boltzmann solvers CAMB and CLASS. Moreover, to establish the validity of the Gaussian approximation, we show that the Fisher matrix marginal error contours coincide with the credible regions obtained when running Monte Carlo Markov Chains with MontePython while using the exact same mock likelihoods. The new Euclid forecast pipelines presented here are ready for use with additional cosmological parameters, in order to explore extended cosmological models., Comment: 45 pages, 24 figures

11. Spherical collapse in Generalized Dark Matter models

Abstract

The influence of considering a generalized dark matter (GDM) model, which allows for a non-pressure-less dark matter and a non-vanishing sound speed in the non-linear spherical collapse model is discussed for the Einstein-de Sitter-like (EdSGDM) and $\Lambda$GDM models. By assuming that the vacuum component responsible for the accelerated expansion of the Universe is not clustering and therefore behaving similarly to the cosmological constant $\Lambda$, we show how the change in the GDM characteristic parameters affects the linear density threshold for collapse of the non-relativistic component ($\delta_{\rm c}$) and its virial overdensity ($\Delta_{\rm V}$). We found that the generalized dark matter equation of state parameter $w_{\rm gdm}$ is responsible for lower values of the linear overdensity parameter as compared to the standard spherical collapse model and that this effect is much stronger than the one induced by a change in the generalized dark matter sound speed $c^2_{\rm s, gdm}$. We also found that the virial overdensity is only slightly affected and mostly sensitive to the generalized dark matter equation of state parameter $w_{\rm gdm}$. These effects could be relatively enhanced for lower values of the matter density. Finally, we found that the effects of the additional physics on $\delta_{\rm c}$ and $\Delta_{\rm V}$, when translated to non-linear observables such as the halo mass function, induce an overall deviation of about 40\% with respect to the standard $\Lambda$CDM model at late times for high mass objects. However, within the current linear constraints for $c^2_{\rm s, gdm}$ and $w_{\rm gdm}$, we found that these changes are the consequence of properly taking into account the correct linear matter power spectrum for the GDM model while the effects coming from modifications in the spherical collapse model remain negligible., Comment: Published in Physical Review D - no major corrections to the first version - new sections added

This analysis will improve our knowledge of the cosmology of these modified gravity models. Methods. Abstract

The accelerated expansion of the universe is a rather established fact in cosmology and many different models have been proposed as a viable explanation. Many of these models are based on the standard general relativistic framework of non-interacting fluids or more recently of coupled (interacting) dark energy models, where dark energy (the scalar field) is coupled to the dark matter component giving rise to a fifth-force. An interesting alternative is to couple the scalar field directly to the gravity sector via the Ricci scalar. These models are dubbed non-minimally coupled models and give rise to a time-dependent gravitational constant. In this work we study few models falling into this category and describe how observables depend on the strength of the coupling. We extend recent work on the subject by taking into account also the effects of the perturbations of the scalar field and showing their relative importance on the evolution of the mass function. By working in the framework of the spherical collapse model, we show that perturbations of the scalar field have a limited impact on the growth factor (for small coupling constant) and on the mass function with respect to the case where perturbations are neglected., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures, accepted in MNRAS

Abstract

The Euclid mission of the European Space Agency will perform a survey of weak lensing cosmic shear and galaxy clustering in order to constrain cosmological models and fundamental physics. We expand and adjust the mock Euclid likelihoods of the MontePython software in order to match the exact recipes used in previous Euclid Fisher matrix forecasts for several probes: weak lensing cosmic shear, photometric galaxy clustering, the cross-correlation between the latter observables, and spectroscopic galaxy clustering. We also establish which precision settings are required when running the Einstein-Boltzmann solvers CLASS and CAMB in the context of Euclid. For the minimal cosmological model, extended to include dynamical dark energy, we perform Fisher matrix forecasts based directly on a numerical evaluation of second derivatives of the likelihood with respect to model parameters. We compare our results with those of other forecasting methods and tools. We show that such MontePython forecasts agree very well with previous Fisher forecasts published by the Euclid Collaboration, and also, with new forecasts produced by the CosmicFish code, now interfaced directly with the two Einstein-Boltzmann solvers CAMB and CLASS. Moreover, to establish the validity of the Gaussian approximation, we show that the Fisher matrix marginal error contours coincide with the credible regions obtained when running Monte Carlo Markov Chains with MontePython while using the exact same mock likelihoods. The new Euclid forecast pipelines presented here are ready for use with additional cosmological parameters, in order to explore extended cosmological models.

Abstract

Introduction: Based on the job demands-resources (JD-R) model, the present study aimed to validate “The Technical and Administrative Staff Quality of Life At Work” (TASQ@work), a new tool to assess the quality of life at work in academia focused on technical and administrative staff. Methods: This tool was developed by the QoL@Work research team, a group of expert academics in the field of work and organizational psychology affiliated with the Italian Association of Psychologists. The TASQ@work was elaborated in different steps. The first phase was aimed at the identification of the dimensions of the tool. The second phase was aimed to assess the psychometric properties of the tool. The validation process involved confirmatory analysis and measurement invariance of the various constructs selected. The analyses were performed in a convenience sample of two Italian universities in different regions (one in the Northwest and the second in Central Italy). Results: The sample was composed of 1820 Administrative Staff, comprising 69.4% from University 1 (N = 1,263) and 30.6% from University 2 (N = 557). The TASQ@work presented satisfactory psychometric properties (normality of the items, reliability and content, construct and nomological validity) and measurement invariance across gender, seniority, and Athenaeum. Discussion: The results indicate that the tool can be considered a reliable and valid instrument to assess job demands, job resources, and outcomes in the working life of technical and administrative academic staff. In this perspective, the present study represents the first contribution to the debate on the psychosocial risks in academic contexts by presenting a new tool, the TASQ@work, aimed at contextualizing the JD-R model to understand the role played by psychosocial aspects in affecting the well-being of the academic employees.

24. How clustering dark energy affects matter perturbations

Abstract

The rate of structure formation in the Universe is different in homogeneous and clustered dark energy models. The degree of dark energy clustering depends on the magnitude of its effective sound speed $c^{2}_{\rm eff}$ and for $c_{\rm eff}=0$ dark energy clusters in a similar fashion to dark matter while for $c_{\rm eff}=1$ it stays (approximately) homogeneous. In this paper we consider two distinct equations of state for the dark energy component, $w_{\rm d}=const$ and $w_{\rm d}=w_0+w_1\left(\frac{z}{1+z}\right)$ with $c_{\rm eff}$ as a free parameter and we try to constrain the dark energy effective sound speed using current available data including SnIa, Baryon Acoustic Oscillation, CMB shift parameter ({\em Planck} and {\em WMAP}), Hubble parameter, Big Bang Nucleosynthesis and the growth rate of structures $f\sigma_{8}(z)$. At first we derive the most general form of the equations governing dark matter and dark energy clustering under the assumption that $c_{\rm eff}=const$. Finally, performing an overall likelihood analysis we find that the likelihood function peaks at $c_{\rm eff}=0$, however the dark energy sound speed is degenerate with respect to the cosmological parameters, namely $\Omega_{\rm m}$ and $w_{\rm d}$., Comment: This paper has been accepted for publication in MNRAS 452, 2015, 2930-2939

In the present paper, we compare the predictions of two well known mechanisms considered able to solve the cusp/core problem (a. supernova feedback; b. baryonic clumps-DM interaction) by comparing their theoretical predictions to recent observations of the inner slopes of galaxies with masses ranging from dSphs to normal spirals. We compare the $\alpha$-$V_{\rm rot}$ and the $\alpha$-$M_{\ast}$ relationships, predicted by the two models with high resolution data coming from \citep{Adams2014,Simon2005}, LITTLE THINGS \citep{Oh2015}, THINGS dwarves \citep{Oh2011a,Oh2011b}, THINGS spirals \citep{Oh2015}, Sculptor, Fornax and the Milky Way. The comparison of the theoretical predictions with the complete set of data shows that the two models perform similarly, while when we restrict the analysis to a smaller subsample of higher quality, we show that the method presented in this paper (baryonic clumps-DM interaction) performs better than the one based on supernova feedback. We also show that, contrarily to the first model prediction, dSphs of small mass could have cored profiles. Abstract

In the framework of the spherical collapse model we study the influence of shear and rotation terms for dark matter fluid in clustering dark energy models. We evaluate, for different equations of state, the effects of these terms on the linear overdensity threshold parameter, $\delta_{\rm c}$, and on the virial overdensity, $\Delta_{\rm V}$. The evaluation of their effects on $\delta_{\rm c}$ allows us to infer the modifications occurring on the mass function. Due to ambiguities in the definition of the halo mass in the case of clustering dark energy, we consider two different situations: the first is the classical one where the mass is of the dark matter halo only, while the second one is given by the sum of the mass of dark matter and dark energy. As previously found, the spherical collapse model becomes mass dependant and the two additional terms oppose to the collapse of the perturbations, especially on galactic scales, with respect to the spherical non-rotating model, while on clusters scales the effects of shear and rotation become negligible. The values for $\delta_{\rm c}$ and $\Delta_{\rm V}$ are higher than the standard spherical model. Regarding the effects of the additional non-linear terms on the mass function, we evaluate the number density of halos. As expected, major differences appear at high masses and redshifts. In particular, quintessence (phantom) models predict more (less) objects with respect to the $\Lambda$CDM model and the mass correction due to the contribution of the dark energy component has negligible effects on the overall number of structures., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Abstract

We study the effect of shear and rotation on results previously obtained dealing with the application of the spherical collapse model (SCM) to generalized Chaplygin gas (gCg) dominated universes. The system is composed of baryons and gCg and the collapse is studied for different values of the parameter $\alpha$ of the gCg. We show that the joint effect of shear and rotation is that of slowing down the collapse with respect to the simple SCM. This result is of utmost importance for the so-called unified dark matter models, since the described slow down in the growth of density perturbation can solve one of the main problems of the quoted models, namely the instability described in previous papers [e.g., H. Abstract

We study the impact of Early Dark Energy fluctuations in the linear and non-linear regimes of structure formation. In these models the energy density of dark energy is non-negligible at high redshifts and the fluctuations in the dark energy component can have the same order of magnitude of dark matter fluctuations. Since two basic approximations usually taken in the standard scenario of quintessence models, that both dark energy density during the matter dominated period and dark energy fluctuations on small scales are negligible, are not valid in such models, we first study approximate analytical solutions for dark matter and dark energy perturbations in the linear regime. This study is helpful to find consistent initial conditions for the system of equations and to analytically understand the effects of Early Dark Energy and its fluctuations, which are also verified numerically. In the linear regime we compute the matter growth and variation of the gravitational potential associated with the Integrated Sachs-Wolf effect, showing that these observables present important modifications due to Early Dark Energy fluctuations, though making them more similar to $\Lambda$CDM model. We also make use of the Spherical Collapse model to study the influence of Early Dark Energy fluctuations in the nonlinear regime of structure formation, especially on $\delta_c$ parameter, and their contribution to the halo mass, which we show can be of the order of 10%. We finally compute how the number density of halos is modified in comparison to $\Lambda$CDM model and address the problem of how to correct the mass function in order to take into account the contribution of clustered dark energy. Abstract

We study, for the first time, how shear and angular momentum modify typical parameters of the spherical collapse model, in dark energy dominated universes. In particular, we study the linear density threshold for collapse $\delta_\mathrm{c}$ and the virial overdensity $\Delta_\mathrm{V}$, for several dark-energy models and its influence on the cumulative mass function. The equations of the spherical collapse are those obtained in Pace et al. (2010), who used the fully nonlinear differential equation for the evolution of the density contrast derived from Newtonian hydrodynamics, and assumed that dark energy is present only at the background level. With the introduction of the shear and rotation terms, the parameters of the spherical collapse model are now mass-dependant. The results of the paper show, as expected, that the new terms considered in the spherical collapse model oppose the collapse of perturbations on galactic scale giving rise to higher values of the linear overdensity parameter with respect to the non-rotating case. We find a similar effect also for the virial overdensity parameter. Abstract

{abridged} We study the imprints on the formation and evolution of cosmic structures of dynamical dark energy models, characterized by an oscillating equation of state. The redshift evolution of the equation of state parameter w(z) for dark energy is characterized by two parameters, describing the amplitude and the frequency of the oscillations. We consider six different oscillating dark energy models, each characterized by a different set of parameter values. Under the common assumption that dark energy is not clustering on the scales of interest, we study different aspects of cosmic structure formation. In particular, we self-consistently solve the spherical collapse problem. We then estimate the behavior of several cosmological observables, such as the linear growth factor, the Integrated Sachs-Wolfe (ISW) effect, the number counts of massive structures, and the matter and cosmic shear power spectra. We show that, independently of the amplitude and the frequency of the dark energy oscillations, none of the aforementioned observables show an oscillating behavior as a function of redshift. This is a consequence of the said observables' being integrals over some functions of the expansion rate over cosmic history. We also notice that deviations with respect to the expectations for a fiducial LambdaCDM cosmology are generically small, and in the majority of the cases distinguishing an oscillating dark energy model would be difficult. Exceptions to this conclusion are provided by the cosmic shear power spectrum, which for some of the models shows a difference at the level of \sim 10% over a wide range of angular scales, and the abundance of galaxy clusters, which is modified at the $\sim 10-20%$ level at $z \gtrsim 0.6$ for future wide weak lensing surveys., Comment: 18 pages, 15 figures, published on MNRAS

34. The effect of primordial non-Gaussianity on the skeleton of cosmic shear maps

Abstract

(abridged) We explore the imprints of deviations from Gaussian primordial density fluctuations on the skeleton of the large-scale matter distribution as mapped through cosmological weak lensing. We computed the skeleton length of simulated effective convergence maps covering $\sim 35$ sq. deg each, extracted from a suite of cosmological $n-$body runs with different levels of local primordial non-Gaussianity. The latter is expected to alter the structure formation process with respect to the fiducial Gaussian scenario, and thus to leave a signature on the cosmic web. We found that alterations of the initial conditions consistently modify both the cumulative and the differential skeleton length, although the effect is generically smaller than the cosmic variance and depends on the smoothing of the map prior to the skeleton computation. Nevertheless, the qualitative shape of these deviations is rather similar to their primordial counterparts, implying that skeleton statistics retain good memory of the initial conditions. We performed a statistical analysis in order to find out at what Confidence Level primordial non-Gaussianity could be constrained by the skeleton test on cosmic shear maps of the size we adopted. At 68.3% Confidence Level we found an error on the measured level of primordial non-Gaussianity of $\Delta f_\mathrm{NL}\sim 300$, while at 90% Confidence Level it is of $\Delta f_\mathrm{NL}\sim 500$. While these values by themselves are not competitive with the current constraints, weak lensing maps larger than those used here would have a smaller field-to-field variance, and thus would likely lead to tighter constraints. A rough estimate indicates $\Delta f_\mathrm{NL} \sim$ a few tens at 68.3% Confidence Level for an all-sky weak lensing survey., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures. Accepted for publication on MNRAS

Abstract

We study the spherical collapse model for several dark energy scenarios using the fully nonlinear differential equation for the evolution of the density contrast within homogeneous spherical overdensities derived from Newtonian hydrodynamics. While mathematically equivalent to the more common approach based on the differential equation for the radius of the perturbation, this approach has substantial conceptual as well as numerical advantages. Among the most important are that no singularities at early times appear, which avoids numerical problems in particular in applications to cosmologies with dynamical and early dark energy, and that the assumption of time-reversal symmetry can easily be dropped where it is not strictly satisfied. We use this approach to derive the two parameters characterising the spherical-collapse model, i.e.~the linear density threshold for collapse $\delta_\mathrm{c}$ and the virial overdensity $\Delta_\mathrm{V}$, for a broad variety of dark-energy models and to reconsider these parameters in cosmologies with early dark energy. We find that, independently of the model under investigation, $\delta_\mathrm{c}$ and $\Delta_\mathrm{V}$ are always very close to the values obtained for the standard $\Lambda$CDM model, arguing that the abundance of and the mean density within non-linear structures are quite insensitive to the differences between dark-energy cosmologies. Abstract

While usually cosmological initial conditions are assumed to be Gaussian, inflationary theories can predict a certain amount of primordial non-Gaussianity which can have an impact on the statistical properties of the lensing observables. In order to evaluate this effect, we build a large set of realistic maps of different lensing quantities starting from light-cones extracted from large dark-matter only N-body simulations with initial conditions corresponding to different levels of primordial local non-Gaussianity strength $f_{\rm NL}$. Considering various statistical quantities (PDF, power spectrum, shear in aperture, skewness and bispectrum) we find that the effect produced by the presence of primordial non-Gaussianity is relatively small, being of the order of few per cent for values of $|f_{\rm NL}|$ compatible with the present CMB constraints and reaching at most 10-15 per cent for the most extreme cases with $|f_{\rm NL}|=1000$. We also discuss the degeneracy of this effect with the uncertainties due to the power spectrum normalization $\sigma_8$ and matter density parameter $\Omega_{\rm m}$, finding that an error in the determination of $\sigma_8$ ($\Omega_{\rm m}$) of about 3 (10) per cent gives differences comparable with non-Gaussian models having $f_{\rm NL}=\pm 1000$. These results suggest that the possible presence of an amount of primordial non-Gaussianity corresponding to $|f_{\rm NL}|=100$ is not hampering a robust determination of the main cosmological parameters in present and future weak lensing surveys, while a positive detection of deviations from the Gaussian hypothesis is possible only breaking the degeneracy with other cosmological parameters and using data from deep surveys covering a large fraction of the sky., Comment: accepted by MNRAS

Abstract

We develop and apply an analytic method to predict peak counts in weak-lensing surveys. It is based on the theory of Gaussian random fields and suitable to quantify the level of spurious detections caused by chance projections of large-scale structures as well as the shape and shot noise contributed by the background galaxies. We compare our method to peak counts obtained from numerical ray-tracing simulations and find good agreement at the expected level. The number of peak detections depends substantially on the shape and size of the filter applied to the gravitational shear field. Our main results are that weak-lensing peak counts are dominated by spurious detections up to signal-to-noise ratios of 3--5 and that most filters yield only a few detections per square degree above this level, while a filter optimised for suppressing large-scale structure noise returns up to an order of magnitude more., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, submitted to A&A

Abstract

Aims. We calibrate the number density, completeness, reliability and the lower mass limit of galaxy-cluster detections through their thermal SZ signal, and compare them to X-ray cluster detections. Methods. We simulate maps of the thermal SZ effect and the X-ray emission from light cones constructed in a large, hydrodynamical, cosmological simulation volume, including realistic noise contributions. The maps are convolved with linear, optimised, single- and multi-band filters to identify local peaks and their signal-to-noise ratios. The resulting peak catalogues are then compared to the halo population in the simulation volume to identify true and spurious detections. Results. Multi-band filtering improves the statistics of SZ cluster detections considerably compared to single-band filtering. Observations with the characteristics of ACT detect clusters with masses M>6-9e13 M_o/h, quite independent of redshift, reach 50% completeness at ~1e14 M_o/h and 100% completeness at ~2e14 M_o/h. Samples are contaminated by only a few per cent spurious detections. This is broadly comparable to X-ray cluster detections with XMM-Newton with 100 ks exposure time in the soft band, except that the mass limit for X-ray detections increases much more steeply with redshift than for SZ detections. Abstract

Introduzione Il Progetto Mentore per la didattica dell'Università di Palermo è un’esperienza di formazione e miglioramento della didattica universitaria a cui partecipiamo su base volontaria da alcuni anni. Le attività del Progetto includono anche la formazione su alcune specifiche metodologie didattiche, ma contemporaneamente, attraverso il confronto e il dialogo tra pari, incentivano la ricerca e l’elaborazione di nuovi percorsi didattici all’interno dei rispettivi insegnamenti. In questo contesto, su iniziativa autonoma e attraverso una formazione da autodidatti, abbiamo sperimentato in due insegnamenti di Corsi di Laurea di ambito disciplinare diverso (Giurisprudenza e Chimica) la metodologia del Debate, ancora poco diffusa in ambito accademico. Metodologia e risultati. Nella comunicazione illustriamo brevemente e confrontiamo le due esperienze, che sono state diverse per l’età degli studenti coinvolti, per la loro formazione e il livello del percorso universitario, per gli obiettivi didattici, per l’organizzazione dell’attività e per i criteri e le regole scelte per adattare il modello al contesto specifico e per la diversa modalità di erogazione degli insegnamenti, in un caso a distanza e nell’altro mista. Utilizziamo a tal fine anche alcune immagini o microvideo della esperienza. Presentiamo e sottoponiamo alla discussione alcuni aspetti che ci sembrano particolarmente interessanti e/o problematici sulla base dei riscontri ottenuti, ed in particolare: l’individuazione e la formulazione del tema da dibattere, la flessibilità della struttura del Debate in relazione alle finalità del docente, la possibilità di adottare un modello più competitivo o collaborativo, le soft skills e le competenze che possono essere attivate o potenziate dal Debate. Introduction The Project Mentore per la didattica (Mentors for improving academic teaching) is a training and improvement experience in academic teaching in which we have been participating on a voluntary basis for a number of years. The Project's activities also include training on some specific teaching methodologies, but at the same time, through discussion and dialogue among peers, they stimulate research and the development of new methodologies of teaching in our courses. In this context, on an autonomous initiative and through self-study training, we experimented in two teachings of Degree Courses (Law and Chemistry) with the Debate methodology, which is still not widely used in academia. Methodology and results. In the communication, we briefly illustrate and compare the two experiences, which were different in terms of the age of the students involved, their education and level of the university course, the teaching objectives, the organization of the activity and the criteria and rules chosen to adapt the model to the specific context, and the different mode of delivery of the teachings, in one case distance and in the other mixed. We also use some images or microvideos of the experience for this purpose. We present and submit for discussion some aspects that seem to us particularly interesting and/or problematic on the basis of the feedback obtained, and in particular: the identification and formulation of the topic to be debated, the flexibility of the Debate structure in relation to the teacher's aims, the possibility of adopting a more competitive or collaborative model, the soft skills and competencies that can be activated or enhanced by the Debate.

Abstract

Objectives Comparative trials among biological drugs for the treatment of ulcerative colitis (UC) provided conflicting results. After patent expire of infliximab originator, adalimumab, infliximab biosimilar, golimumab and vedolizumab have been approved in Italy. We compared the efficacy of these four biologics in UC according to the concept of continuous clinical remission (CCR). Methods In a retrospective, multicentre study, all UC patients treated with adalimumab, infliximab biosimilar, golimumab or vedolizumab between 2014 and 2019 were included. All drugs were compared to each other according to the 1-year CCR rate, defined as Mayo partial score ≤2, with bleeding subscore = 0, without any relapse or optimization with dose escalation, topical treatments or steroid use after first clinical remission. Results Four-hundred sixteen patients (adalimumab = 90, infliximab biosimilar = 105, golimumab = 79, vedolizumab = 142) were included. CCR was achieved in similar percentages among the groups (33%, 37%, 28%, 37%, respectively). All drugs were equivalent in biologic-naive patients, while vedolizumab was better than a second anti-TNF in prior anti-TNF agent failures. No differences were found according to type of adverse events or severe adverse events. Conclusions Based on a strict definition of clinical remission, all biologics appear equally effective at 1 year. Changing to vedolizumab is more effective than switching to another anti-TNF in TNF failures.

Abstract

The present study provides evidence for a valid and reliable tool, the Academic Quality at Work Tool (AQ@workT), to investigate the quality of life at work in academics within the Italian university sector. The AQ@workT was developed by the QoL@Work research team, namely a group of expert academics in the field of work and organizational psychology affiliated with the Italian Association of Psychologists. The tool is grounded in the job demands-resources model and its psychometric properties were assessed in three studies comprising a wide sample of lecturers, researchers, and professors: a pilot study (N = 120), a calibration study (N = 1084), and a validation study (N = 1481). Reliability and content, construct, and nomological validity were supported, as well as measurement invariance across work role (researchers, associate professors, and full professors) and gender. Evidence from the present study shows that the AQ@workT represents a useful and reliable tool to assist university management to enhance quality of life, to manage work-related stress, and to mitigate the potential for harm to academics, particularly during a pandemic. Future studies, such as longitudinal tests of the AQ@workT, should test predictive validity among the variables in the tool.
