About a hundred years ago the Russian biologist A. Gurwitsch, based on his experiments with onion plants by measuring their growth rate, made the hypothesis that plants emitted a weak electromagnetic field which somehow influenced cell growth. This interesting observation remained fundamentally ignored by the scientific community and only in the 1950s the electromagnetic emission from some plants was measured using a photomultiplier used in single counting mode. Later, in the 80s several groups in the world started some extensive work to understand the origin and role of this ultra-weak emission, hereby called biophotons, coming from living organisms. Biophotons are an endogenous very small production of photons in the visible energy range in and from cells and organism, and this emission is characteristic of alive organisms. Today there is no doubt that biophotons really exist, this emission has in fact been measured by many groups and on many different living organisms, from humans to bacteria. On the contrary, the origin of biophotons and whether organisms use them in some way to exchange information is not yet well known; no model proposed since now is really capable of reproducing and interpreting the great variety of experimental data coming from the many different living systems measured so far. In this brief review we present our experimental work on biophotons coming from germinating seeds, the main experimental results and some methods we are using to analyze the data in order to open the door for interpretative models of this phenomenon and clarifying its function in the regulation and communication between cells and living organisms. We also discuss some ideas on how to increase the signal-to-noise ratio of the measured signal to have new experimental possibilities that allow the measurement and the characterization of currently unmeasurable quantities., Comment: 19 pages, 7 figures

Neptune-sized planets exhibit a wide range of compositions and densities, depending onf cators related to their formation and evolution history, such as the distance from their host stars and atmospheric escape processes. They can vary from relatively low-density planets with thick hydrogen-helium atmospheres to higher-density planets with a substantial amount of water or a rocky interior with a thinner atmosphere, such as HD 95338 b, TOI-849 b and TOI-2196 b. The discovery of exoplanets in the hot-Neptune desert, a region close to the host stars with a deficit of Neptune-sized planets, provides insights into the formation and evolution of planetary systems, including the existence of this region itself. Here we show observations of the transiting planet TOI-1853 b, which has a radius of 3.46 +- 0.08 Earth radii and orbits a dwarf star every 1.24 days. This planet has a mass of 73.2 +- 2.7 Earth masses, almost twice that of any other Neptune-sized planet known so far, and a density of 9.7 +- 0.8 grams per cubic centimetre. These values place TOI-1853 b in the middle of the Neptunian desert and imply that heavy elements dominate its mass. The properties of TOI-1853 b present a puzzle for conventional theories of planetary formation and evolution, and could be the result of several proto-planet collisions or the final state of an initially high-eccentricity planet that migrated closer to its parent star., Comment: Preprint submitted to Nature. This document presents the initial scientific case for upgrading the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) at Jefferson Lab (JLab) to 22 GeV. It is the result of a community effort, incorporating insights from a series of workshops conducted between March 2022 and April 2023. With a track record of over 25 years in delivering the world's most intense and precise multi-GeV electron beams, CEBAF's potential for a higher energy upgrade presents a unique opportunity for an innovative nuclear physics program, which seamlessly integrates a rich historical background with a promising future. The proposed physics program encompass a diverse range of investigations centered around the nonperturbative dynamics inherent in hadron structure and the exploration of strongly interacting systems. It builds upon the exceptional capabilities of CEBAF in high-luminosity operations, the availability of existing or planned Hall equipment, and recent advancements in accelerator technology. The proposed program cover various scientific topics, including Hadron Spectroscopy, Partonic Structure and Spin, Hadronization and Transverse Momentum, Spatial Structure, Mechanical Properties, Form Factors and Emergent Hadron Mass, Hadron-Quark Transition, and Nuclear Dynamics at Extreme Conditions, as well as QCD Confinement and Fundamental Symmetries. Each topic highlights the key measurements achievable at a 22 GeV CEBAF accelerator. Furthermore, this document outlines the significant physics outcomes and unique aspects of these programs that distinguish them from other existing or planned facilities. Biophotons are an ultra-weak emission of photons in the visible energy range from living matter. In this work, we study the emission from germinating seeds using an experimental technique designed to detect light of extremely small intensity. The emission from lentil seeds and single bean was analyzed during the whole germination process in terms of both the different spectral components through low pass filters and the different count distributions in the various stages of the germination process. Although the shape of the emission spectrum appears to be very similar in the two samples used in our experiment, our analysis is able to highlight the differences present in the two cases. The homogeneous Bethe-Salpeter equation (BSE) of a (1/2)$^+$ bound system, that has both fermionic and bosonic degrees of freedom, that we call a {\em mock nucleon}, is studied in Minkowski space, in order to analyse the chiral limit in covariant gauges. After adopting an interaction kernel built with a one-particle exchange, the $\chi$-BSE is numerically solved by means of the Nakanishi integral representation and light-front projection. Noteworthy, the chiral limit induces a scale-invariance of the model and consequently generates a wealth of striking features: i) it reduces the number of non trivial Nakanishi weight functions to only one; ii) the form of the surviving weight function has a factorized dependence on the two relevant variables, compact and non-compact one; iii) the coupling constant becomes an explicit function of the real exponent governing the power-law fall-off of the non trivial Nakanishi weight function. The thorough investigation at large transverse-momentum of light-front Bethe-Salpeter amplitudes, obtained with massive constituents, provides a confirmation of the expected universal power-law fall-off, with exponents predicted by our non-perturbative framework. Finally, one can shed light on the exponents that govern the approach to the upper extremum of the longitudinal-momentum fraction distribution function of the {\em mock nucleon}, when the coupling constant varies.

The ExoClock project has been created with the aim of increasing the efficiency of the Ariel mission. It will achieve this by continuously monitoring and updating the ephemerides of Ariel candidates over an extended period, in order to produce a consistent catalogue of reliable and precise ephemerides. This work presents a homogenous catalogue of updated ephemerides for 450 planets, generated by the integration of $\sim$18000 data points from multiple sources. These sources include observations from ground-based telescopes (ExoClock network and ETD), mid-time values from the literature and light-curves from space telescopes (Kepler/K2 and TESS). With all the above, we manage to collect observations for half of the post-discovery years (median), with data that have a median uncertainty less than one minute. In comparison with literature, the ephemerides generated by the project are more precise and less biased. More than 40\% of the initial literature ephemerides had to be updated to reach the goals of the project, as they were either of low precision or drifting. Moreover, the integrated approach of the project enables both the monitoring of the majority of the Ariel candidates (95\%), and also the identification of missing data. The dedicated ExoClock network effectively supports this task by contributing additional observations when a gap in the data is identified. These results highlight the need for continuous monitoring to increase the observing coverage of the candidate planets. Finally, the extended observing coverage of planets allows us to detect trends (TTVs - Transit Timing Variations) for a sample of 19 planets. We investigate the exoplanet candidate TOI-1422b, which was discovered by the TESS space telescope around the high proper-motion G2V star TOI-1422 ($V=10.6$ mag), 155pc away, with the primary goal of confirming its planetary nature and characterising its properties. We monitored TOI-1422 with the HARPS-N spectrograph for 1.5 years to precisely quantify its radial velocity variation. The radial velocity measurements are analyzed jointly with TESS photometry and we also check for blended companions through high-spatial resolution images using the AstraLux instrument. We estimate that the parent star has a radius and a mass of $R^*=1.019_{-0.013}^{+0.014} R_{\odot}$, $M^*=0.981_{-0.065}^{+0.062} M_{\odot}$, respectively. Our analysis confirms the planetary nature of TOI-1422b and also suggests the presence of a Neptune-mass planet on a more distant orbit, the candidate TOI-1422c, which is not detected in TESS light curves. The inner planet, TOI-1422b, orbits on a period $P_{\rm b}=12.9972\pm0.0006$ days and has an equilibrium temperature $T_{\rm eq, b}=867\pm17$ K. With a radius of $R_{\rm b}=3.96^{+0.13}_{-0.11} R_{\oplus}$, a mass of $M_{\rm b}=9.0^{+2.3}_{-2.0} M_{\oplus}$ and, consequently, a density of $\rho_{\rm b}=0.795^{+0.290}_{-0.235}$ g cm$^{-3}$, it can be considered a warm Neptune-size planet. Compared to other exoplanets of similar mass range, TOI-1422b is among the most inflated ones and we expect this planet to have an extensive gaseous envelope that surrounds a core with a mass fraction around $10\%-25\%$ of the total mass of the planet. The outer non-transiting planet candidate, TOI-1422c, has an orbital period of $P_{\rm c}=29.29^{+0.21}_{-0.20}$ days, a minimum mass, $M_{\rm c}\sin{i}$, of $11.1^{+2.6}_{-2.3} M_{\oplus}$, an equilibrium temperature of $T_{\rm eq, c}=661\pm13$ K and, therefore, if confirmed, it could be considered as another warm Neptune., Comment: 22 pages, 20 figures, 6 tables. The ExoClock project is an inclusive, integrated, and interactive platform that was developed to monitor the ephemerides of the Ariel targets to increase the mission efficiency. The project makes the best use of all available resources, i.e., observations from ground telescopes, mid-time values from the literature and finally, observations from space instruments. Currently, the ExoClock network includes 280 participants with telescopes capable of observing 85\% of the currently known Ariel candidate targets. This work includes the results of $\sim$1600 observations obtained up to the 31st of December 2020 from the ExoClock network. These data in combination with $\sim$2350 mid-time values collected from the literature are used to update the ephemerides of 180 planets. The analysis shows that 40\% of the updated ephemerides will have an impact on future scheduling as either they have a significantly improved precision, or they have revealed biases in the old ephemerides. With the new observations, the observing coverage and rate for half of the planets in the sample has been doubled or more. Finally, from a population perspective, we identify that the differences in the 2028 predictions between the old and the new ephemerides have an STD that is double what is expected from gaussian uncertainties. These findings have implications for planning future observations, where we will need to account for drifts potentially greater than the prediction uncertainties. An innovative Cylindrical Gas Electron Multiplier (CGEM) detector is under construction for the upgrade of the inner tracker of the BESIII experiment. A novel system has been worked out for the readout of the CGEM detector, including a new ASIC, dubbed TIGER -Torino Integrated GEM Electronics for Readout, designed for the amplification and digitization of the CGEM output signals. The data output by TIGER are collected and processed by a first FPGA-based module, GEM Read Out Card, in charge of configuration and control of the front-end ASICs. A second FPGA-based module, named GEM Data Concentrator, builds the trigger selected event packets containing the data and stores them via the main BESIII data acquisition system. The design of the electronics chain, including the power and signal distribution, will be presented together with its performance.

The ratio of the nucleon $F_2$ structure functions, $F_2^n/F_2^p$, is determined by the MARATHON experiment from measurements of deep inelastic scattering of electrons from $^3$H and $^3$He nuclei. The experiment was performed in the Hall A Facility of Jefferson Lab and used two high resolution spectrometers for electron detection, and a cryogenic target system which included a low-activity tritium cell. The data analysis used a novel technique exploiting the mirror symmetry of the two nuclei, which essentially eliminates many theoretical uncertainties in the extraction of the ratio. The results, which cover the Bjorken scaling variable range $0.19 < x < 0.83$, represent a significant improvement compared to previous SLAC and Jefferson Lab measurements for the ratio. They are compared to recent theoretical calculations and empirical determinations of the $F_2^n/F_2^p$ ratio.

Nd-based pyrochlore oxides of the form Nd$_{2}B_{2}$O$_{7}$ have garnered a significant amount of interest owing to the moment fragmentation physics observed in Nd$_{2}$Zr$_{2}$O$_{7}$ and speculated in Nd$_{2}$Hf$_{2}$O$_{7}$. Notably this phenomenon is not ubiquitous in this family, as it is absent in Nd$_{2}$Sn$_{2}$O$_{7}$, which features a smaller ionic radius on the $B$-site. Here, we explore the necessary conditions for moment fragmentation in the Nd pyrochlore family through a detailed study of the mixed $B$-site pyrochlore Nd$_{2}$GaSbO$_{7}$. The $B$-site of this system is characterized by significant disorder and an extremely small average ionic radius. Similarly to Nd$_{2}$Sn$_{2}$O$_{7}$, we find no evidence for moment fragmentation through our bulk characterization and neutron scattering experiments, indicating that chemical pressure (and not necessarily the $B$-site disorder) plays a key role in the presence or absence of this phenomenon in this material family. Surprisingly, the presence of significant $B$-site disorder in Nd$_{2}$GaSbO$_{7}$ does not generate a spin glass ground state and instead the same all-in-all-out magnetic order identified in other Nd pyrochlores is found here., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures

PARSIFAL (PARametrized SImulation by Farinelli And Lavezzi) is a fast and reliable software tool that reproduces the complete response of a triple-GEM detector to the passage of a charged particle, taking into account the main physical effects. Starting from the detector configuration and the particle information, PARSIFAL reproduces ionization, spatial and temporal diffusion, effect of magnetic field, if present, and GEM amplification to provide the dependable triple-GEM detector response. In the design and optimization stages of this kind of detectors, simulations play an important role. Accurate and robust software programs, such as GARFIELD++, can simulate the transport of electrons and ions in a gas medium and their interaction with the electric field, but they are CPU-time consuming. The necessity to reduce the processing time while maintaining the precision of a full simulation is the main driver of this work. For a given set of geometrical and electrical settings, GARFIELD++ is run once-and-for-all to provide the input parameters for PARSIFAL. Once PARSIFAL is initialized and run, it produces the detector output, including the signal induction and the output of the electronics. The results of the analysis of the simulated data obtained with PARSIFAL are compared with the results of the experimental data collected during a testbeam: some tuning factors are applied to the simulation to improve the agreement. Gaseous detectors are used in high energy physics as trackers or, more generally, as devices for the measurement of the particle position. For this reason, they must provide high spatial resolution and they have to be able to operate in regions of intense radiation, i.e. around the interaction point of collider machines. Among these, Micro Pattern Gaseous Detectors (MPGD) are the latest frontier and allow to overcome many limitations of the pre-existing detectors, such as the radiation tolerance and the rate capability. The gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) is a MPGD that exploits an intense electric field in a reduced amplification region in order to prevent discharges. Several amplification stages, like in a triple-GEM, allow to increase the detector gain and to reduce the discharge probability. Reconstruction techniques such as charge centroid (CC) and micro-Time Projection Chamber ($\upmu$TPC) are used to perform the position measurement. From literature triple-GEMs show a stable behaviour up to $10^8\,$Hz/cm$^2$. A testbeam with four planar triple-GEMs has been performed at the Mainz Microtron (MAMI) facility and their performance was evaluated in different beam conditions. In this article a focus on the time performance for the $\upmu$TPC clusterization is given and a new measurement of the triple-GEM limits at high rate will be presented.

Performance of triple GEM prototypes in strong magnetic field has been evaluated bymeans of a muon beam at the H4 line of the SPS test area at CERN. Data have been reconstructedand analyzed offline with two reconstruction methods: the charge centroid and the micro-Time-Projection-Chamber exploiting the charge and the time measurement respectively. A combinationof the two reconstruction methods is capable to guarantee a spatial resolution better than 150{\mu}min magnetic field up to a 1 T.

The ladder Bethe-Salpeter Equation of a bound (1/2)+ system, composed by a fermion and a scalar boson, is solved in Minkowski space, for the first time. The formal tools are the same already successfully adopted for two-scalar and two-fermion systems, namely the Nakanishi integral representation of the Bethe-Salpeter amplitude and the light-front projection of the fulfilled equation. Numerical results are presented and discussed for two interaction kernels: i) a massive scalar exchange and ii) a massive vector exchange, illustrating both the correlation between binding energies and the interaction coupling constants, as well as the valence content of the interacting state, through the valence probabilities and the light-front momentum distributions. In the case of the scalar exchange, an interesting side effect, to be ascribed to the repulsion generated by the small components of the Dirac spinor, is pointed out, while for the vector exchange the manifestation of the helicity conservation opens new interesting questions to be addressed within a fully non-perturbative framework, as well as the onset of a scale-invariant regime., Comment: 38 pages, 6 figures. The fundamental theory of the strong interaction -- quantum chromodynamics (QCD) -- provides the foundational framework with which to describe and understand the key properties of atomic nuclei. A deep understanding of the explicit role of quarks and gluons in nuclei remains elusive however, as these effects have thus far been well-disguised by confinement effects in QCD which are encapsulated by a successful description in terms of effective hadronic degrees of freedom. The observation of the EMC effect has provided an enduring indication for explicit QCD effects in nuclei, and points to the medium modification of the bound protons and neutrons in the nuclear medium. Understanding the EMC effect is a major challenge for modern nuclear physics, and several key questions remain, such as understanding its flavor, spin, and momentum dependence. This manuscript provides a contemporary snapshot of our understanding of the role of QCD in nuclei and outlines possible pathways in experiment and theory that will help deepen our understanding of nuclei in the context of QCD.

The search for telluric extrasolar planets with the Radial Velocity (RV) technique is intrinsically limited by the stellar jitter due to the activity of the star, because stellar surface inhomogeneities, including spots, plages and convective granules, induce perturbations hiding or even mimicking the planetary signal. This kind of noise is poorly understood in all the stars, but the Sun, due to their unresolved surfaces. For these reasons, the effects of the surface inhomogeneities on the measurement of the RV are very difficult to characterize. On the other hand, a better knowledge of these phenomena can allow us a step forward in our understanding of solar and stellar RV noise sources. This will allow to develop more tools for an optimal activity correction leading to more precise stellar RVs. Due to the high spatial resolution with which the Sun is observed, this noise is well known for it. Despite this, a link is lacking between the single observed photospheric phenomena and the behavior of the Sun observed as a star. LOCNES (Low Cost NIR Extended Solar Telescope) will allow to gather time series of RVs in order to disentangle the different contributions to the stellar (i.e., solar) RV jitter. Since July 2015, a Low Cost Solar Telescope (LCST) has been installed outside the TNG dome to feed solar light to the HARPS-N spectrograph (0.38-0.69 $\mu$m; R=115000). The refurbishment of the Near Infrared (NIR) High Resolution Spectrograph GIANO (now GIANO-B) and the new observing mode GIARPS at TNG (simultaneous observations in visible with HARPS-N and in NIR with GIANO-B) is a unique opportunity to extend the wavelength range up to 2.4 $\mu$m for measuring the RV time series of the Sun as a star. The Atmospheric Remote-sensing Infrared Exoplanet Large-survey mission (ARIEL) is one of the three present candidates for the ESA M4 (the fourth medium mission) launch opportunity. The proposed Payload will perform a large unbiased spectroscopic survey from space concerning the nature of exoplanets atmospheres and their interiors to determine the key factors affecting the formation and evolution of planetary systems. ARIEL will observe a large number (>500) of warm and hot transiting gas giants, Neptunes and super-Earths around a wide range of host star types, targeting planets hotter than 600 K to take advantage of their well-mixed atmospheres. It will exploit primary and secondary transits spectroscopy in the 1.2-8 um spectral range and broad-band photometry in the optical and Near IR (NIR). The main instrument of the ARIEL Payload is the IR Spectrometer (AIRS) providing low-resolution spectroscopy in two IR channels: Channel 0 (CH0) for the 1.95-3.90 um band and Channel 1 (CH1) for the 3.90-7.80 um range. It is located at the intermediate focal plane of the telescope and common optical system and it hosts two IR sensors and two cold front-end electronics (CFEE) for detectors readout, a well defined process calibrated for the selected target brightness and driven by the Payload's Instrument Control Unit (ICU)., Comment: Experimental Astronomy, Special Issue on ARIEL, (2017)

The semi-inclusive deep inelastic electron scattering off transversely polarized $^3$He, i.e. the process, $e + \vec{^3 {\rm He}} \to e' + h+X$, with $h$ a detected fast hadron, is studied beyond the plane wave impulse approximation. To this end, a distorted spin-dependent spectral function of a nucleon inside an A=3 nucleus is actually evaluated through a generalized eikonal approximation, in order to take into account the final state interactions between the hadronizing system and the (A-1) nucleon spectator one. Our realistic description of both nuclear target and final state is a substantial step forward for achieving a reliable extraction of the Sivers and Collins single spin asymmetries of the free neutron. To illustrate how and to what extent the model dependence due to the treatment of the nuclear effects is under control, we apply our approach to the extraction procedure of the neutron single spin asymmetries from those measured for $^3$He for values of the kinematical variables relevant both for forthcoming experiments at Jefferson Lab and, with an exploratory purpose, for the future Electron Ion Collider., Comment: 30 pages, 13 figures

We extend the investigation of the Generalized Parton Distribution for a charged pion within a fully covariant constituent quark model, in two respects: (i) calculating the tensor distribution and (ii) adding the treatment of the evolution, needed for achieving a meaningful comparison with both the experimental parton distribution and the lattice evaluation of the so-called generalized form factors. Distinct features of our phenomenological covariant quark model are: (i) a 4D Ansatz for the pion Bethe-Salpeter amplitude, to be used in the Mandelstam formula for matrix elements of the relevant current operators, and (ii) only two parameters, namely a quark mass assumed to hold $m_q=~220$ MeV and a free parameter fixed through the value of the pion decay constant. The possibility of increasing the dynamical content of our covariant constituent quark model is briefly discussed in the context of the Nakanishi integral representation of the Bethe-Salpeter amplitude., Comment: Pages 20, figure 11 and table 8. Baryon-to-meson Transition Distribution Amplitudes (TDAs) encoding valuable new information on hadron structure appear as building blocks in the collinear factorized description for several types of hard exclusive reactions. In this paper, we address the possibility of accessing nucleon-to-pion ($\pi N$) TDAs from $\bar{p}p \to e^+e^- \pi^0$ reaction with the future \={P}ANDA detector at the FAIR facility. At high center of mass energy and high invariant mass squared of the lepton pair $q^2$, the amplitude of the signal channel $\bar{p}p \to e^+e^- \pi^0$ admits a QCD factorized description in terms of $\pi N$ TDAs and nucleon Distribution Amplitudes (DAs) in the forward and backward kinematic regimes. Assuming the validity of this factorized description, we perform feasibility studies for measuring $\bar{p}p \to e^+e^- \pi^0$ with the \={P}ANDA detector. Detailed simulations on signal reconstruction efficiency as well as on rejection of the most severe background channel, i.e. $\bar{p}p \to \pi^+\pi^- \pi^0$ were performed for the center of mass energy squared $s = 5$ GeV$^2$ and $s = 10$ GeV$^2$, in the kinematic regions $3.0 < q^2 < 4.3$ GeV$^2$ and $5 < q^2 < 9$ GeV$^2$, respectively, with a neutral pion scattered in the forward or backward cone $| \cos\theta_{\pi^0}| > 0.5 $ in the proton-antiproton center of mass frame. Results of the simulation show that the particle identification capabilities of the \={P}ANDA detector will allow to achieve a background rejection factor of $5\cdot 10^7$ ($1\cdot 10^7$) at low (high) $q^2$ for $s=5$ GeV$^2$, and of $1\cdot 10^8$ ($6\cdot 10^6$) at low (high) $q^2$ for $s=10$ GeV$^2$, while keeping the signal reconstruction efficiency at around $40\%$. At both energies, a clean lepton signal can be reconstructed with the expected statistics corresponding to $2$ fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. The machine described in this document is an advanced Source of up to 20 MeV Gamma Rays based on Compton back-scattering, i.e. collision of an intense high power laser beam and a high brightness electron beam with maximum kinetic energy of about 720 MeV. Fully equipped with collimation and characterization systems, in order to generate, form and fully measure the physical characteristics of the produced Gamma Ray beam. The quality, i.e. phase space density, of the two colliding beams will be such that the emitted Gamma ray beam is characterized by energy tunability, spectral density, bandwidth, polarization, divergence and brilliance compatible with the requested performances of the ELI-NP user facility, to be built in Romania as the Nuclear Physics oriented Pillar of the European Extreme Light Infrastructure. This document illustrates the Technical Design finally produced by the EuroGammaS Collaboration, after a thorough investigation of the machine expected performances within the constraints imposed by the ELI-NP tender for the Gamma Beam System (ELI-NP-GBS), in terms of available budget, deadlines for machine completion and performance achievement, compatibility with lay-out and characteristics of the planned civil engineering.

We use a gray molasses operating on the D$_1$ atomic transition to produce degenerate quantum gases of $^{6}$Li with a large number of atoms. This sub-Doppler cooling phase allows us to lower the initial temperature of 10$^9$ atoms from 500 to 40 $\mu$K in 2 ms. We observe that D$_1$ cooling remains effective into a high-intensity infrared dipole trap where two-state mixtures are evaporated to reach the degenerate regime. We produce molecular Bose-Einstein condensates of up to 5$\times$10$^{5}$ molecules and weakly-interacting degenerate Fermi gases of $7\times$10$^{5}$ atoms at $T/T_{F}<0.1$ with a typical experimental duty cycle of 11 seconds., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

EChO is a three-modules (VNIR, SWIR, MWIR), highly integrated spectrometer, covering the wavelength range from 0.55 $\mu$m, to 11.0 $\mu$m. The baseline design includes the goal wavelength extension to 0.4 $\mu$m while an optional LWIR module extends the range to the goal wavelength of 16.0 $\mu$m. An Instrument Control Unit (ICU) is foreseen as the main electronic subsystem interfacing the spacecraft and collecting data from all the payload spectrometers modules. ICU is in charge of two main tasks: the overall payload control (Instrument Control Function) and the housekeepings and scientific data digital processing (Data Processing Function), including the lossless compression prior to store the science data to the Solid State Mass Memory of the Spacecraft. The Visible and Near Infrared (VNIR) is one of the modules of EChO, the Exoplanets Characterization Observatory proposed to ESA for an M-class mission. EChO is aimed to observe planets while transiting by their suns. Then the instrument had to be designed to assure a high efficiency over the whole spectral range. In fact, it has to be able to observe stars with an apparent magnitude Mv= 9-12 and to see contrasts of the order of 10-4 - 10-5 necessary to reveal the characteristics of the atmospheres of the exoplanets under investigation. VNIR is a spectrometer in a cross-dispersed configuration, covering the 0.4-2.5 micron spectral range with a resolving power of about 330 and a field of view of 2 arcsec. It is functionally split into two channels respectively working in the 0.4-1 and 1.0-2.5 micron spectral ranges. Such a solution is imposed by the fact the light at short wavelengths has to be shared with the EChO Fine Guiding System (FGS) devoted to the pointing of the stars under observation. The spectrometer makes use of a HgCdTe detector of 512 by 512 pixels, 18 micron pitch and working at a temperature of 45K as the entire VNIR optical bench. The instrument has been interfaced to the telescope optics by two optical fibers, one per channel, to assure an easier coupling and an easier colocation of the instrument inside the EChO optical bench., Comment: 26 pages

This report describes the scientific aims and potentials as well as the preliminary technical design of IRIDE, an innovative tool for multi-disciplinary investigations in a wide field of scientific, technological and industrial applications. IRIDE will be a high intensity 'particle factory', based on a combination of a high duty cycle radio-frequency superconducting electron linac and of high energy lasers. Conceived to provide unique research possibilities for particle physics, for condensed matter physics, chemistry and material science, for structural biology and industrial applications, IRIDE will open completely new research possibilities and advance our knowledge in many branches of science and technology. IRIDE will contribute to open new avenues of discoveries and to address most important riddles: What does matter consist of? What is the structure of proteins that have a fundamental role in life processes? What can we learn from protein structure to improve the treatment of diseases and to design more efficient drugs? But also how does an electronic chip behave under the effect of radiations? How can the heat flow in a large heat exchanger be optimized? The scientific potential of IRIDE is far reaching and justifies the construction of such a large facility in Italy in synergy with the national research institutes and companies and in the framework of the European and international research. It will impact also on R&D work for ILC, FEL, and will be complementarity to other large scale accelerator projects. The PANDA experiment will be built at the FAIR facility at Darmstadt (Germany) to perform accurate tests of the strong interaction through bar pp and bar pA annihilation's studies. To track charged particles, two systems consisting of a set of planar, closed-packed, self-supporting straw tube layers are under construction. The PANDA straw tubes will have also unique characteristics in term of material budget and performance. They consist of very thin mylar-aluminized cathodes which are made self-supporting by means of the operation gas-mixture over-pressure. This solution allows to reduce at maximum the weight of the mechanical support frame and hence the detector material budget. The PANDA straw tube central tracker will not only reconstruct charged particle trajectories, but also will help in low momentum (< 1 GeV) particle identification via dE/dx measurements. This is a quite new approach that PANDA tracking group has first tested with detailed Monte Carlo simulations, and then with experimental tests of detector prototypes. The distorted spin-dependent spectral function of a nucleon inside an A=3 nucleus is introduced as a novel tool for investigating the polarized electron scattering off polarized $^3$He in semi-inclusive DIS regime (SiDIS), going beyond the standard plane wave impulse approximation. This distribution function is applied to the study of the spectator SiDIS, $\vec{^3{\rm He}}(\vec e, e' ~{^2}{\rm H})X$, in order to properly take into account the final state interaction between the hadronizing quark and the detected deuteron, with the final goal of a more reliable extraction of the polarized parton-distribution $g_1(x)$ inside a bound proton. Our analysis allows to single out two well-defined kinematical regions where the experimental asymmetries could yield very interesting information: the region where the final state effects can be minimized, and therefore the direct access to the parton distributions in the proton is feasible, and the one where the final state interaction dominates, and the spectator SiDIS reactions can elucidate the mechanism of the quark hadronization itself. The perspectives of extending our approach i) to the mirror nucleus, $^3$H, for achieving a less model-dependent flavor decomposition, and ii) to the asymmetries measured in the standard SiDIS reactions, $\vec e + \vec{^3 {\rm He}} \to e' + h+X$ with $h$ a detected fast hadron, with the aim of extracting the neutron transversity, are discussed., Comment: 28 pages + 14 figures.
