Abstract

The ability to sequence genes has vastly altered our understanding of higher-level relationships among organisms such as those found at the kingdom level. It is important for biology teachers to incorporate these new views and not retain outdated concepts still present in some textbooks. This article provides an overview of our new understanding of higher-level taxonomy, and suggestions for the utilization of current taxonomy in classroom instruction. Abstract

The quantities and identities of soil mycobacteria in aerosols to which patients are exposed are evaluated by culture and molecular analyses of mycobacteria from soil samples provided by patients in order to determine if soils are potential sources of nontuberculous mycobacterial infections. The results have shown that potting soils are potential sources of infection by environmental mycobacteria and hence dust-excluding masks should be used while potting or other activities that generate aerosol with soil.

Pace Abstract: Ribonuclease P (RNase P) is an endonuclease involved in processing tRNA. It contains both RNA and protein subunits and occurs in all three domains of life: namely, Archaea, Bacteria and Eukarya. The RNase P RNA subunits from bacteria and some archaea are catalytically active in vitro, whereas those from eukaryotes and most archaea require protein subunits for activity. RNase P has been characterized biochemically and genetically in several systems, and detailed structural information is emerging for both RNA and protein subunits from phylogenetically diverse organisms. In vitro reconstitution of activity is providing insight into the role of proteins in the RNase P holoenzyme. Together, these findings are beginning to impart an understanding of the coevolution of the RNA and protein worlds. Abstract

Nucleic acid-based molecular methods, combined with estimates of biomass (ATP), pigments, and microelectrode measurements of chemical gradients, are applied to map microbial diversity vertically on a millimeter scale in a hypersaline microbial mat from Guerrero Negro, Baja California Sur, Mexico. The analysis has revealed unexpected diversity, complexity and structure within the mat.

Abstract

The molecular phylogenetic makeup of microbial communities that build Hamelin Pool stromatolites is determined to shed light of the surface and interior of a domal stromatolite. The results suggest that new and diverse microorganisms form much of the structure and fabric of the communities and contribute substantially to stromatolite formation.
