We explore the impact of dynamical friction on cosmological scales and show its influence on the evolution of perturbations. In particular, considering smooth and clustering dark energy models, we describe the role played by friction by selecting two main hierarchical models, \textit{i.e.}, the first where the friction term is proportional to the Hubble rate, whereas the second where friction is induced by the dark energy pressure. The second approach generalises the first and translates the idea that pressure is a general relativistic effect, motivating why friction might arise once barotropic dark energy fluids are considered. The corresponding effects of friction are investigated at the level of linear and nonlinear perturbations, using the formalism of the spherical collapse model. Whilst dynamical friction has very small effects and thus it cannot be excluded \emph{a priori}, dissipative pressure friction leads to a substantial slow down in the evolution of perturbations. This can be particularly inferred within the halo mass function, for which we also employ corrections due to dark energy clustering. To this end, in order to discern detectable deviations from the standard cosmological model, we thus highlight where dissipation effects might play a significant role at large scales., Comment: 25 pages, 17 figures. We present the nonlinear growth of bound cosmological structures using the spherical collapse approach in the shift-symmetric Galileon theories. In particular, we focus on the class of models belonging to the Kinetic Gravity Braiding by adopting a general parametrization of the action encoding a large set of models by means of four free parameters: two defining the background evolution and two affecting the perturbations. For the latter we identify their specific signatures on the linearised critical density contrast, nonlinear effective gravitational coupling and the virial overdensity and how they drive their predictions away from $\Lambda$CDM. We then use the results of the spherical collapse model to predict the evolution of the halo mass function. We find that the shift-symmetric model predicts a larger number of objects compared to $\Lambda$CDM for masses $M \gtrsim 10^{14} h^{-1} \mathrm{M}_\odot$ and such number increases for larger deviations from the standard model. We analyze time-dependent dark energy equations of state through linear and nonlinear structure formation and their quintessence potentials, characterized by fast, recent transitions, inspired by parameter space studies of Horndeski models. The influence of dark energy on structures comes from modifications to the background expansion rate and from perturbations as well. In order to compute the structures growth, we employ a generalization of the \emph{spherical collapse} formalism that includes perturbations of fluids with pressure. We numerically solve the equations of motion for the perturbations and the field. Our analysis suggests that a true Heaviside step transition is a good approximation for most of the considered models, since most of the quantities weakly depend on the transition speed. We find that transitions occurring at redshifts $z_{\rm t}\gtrsim 2$ cannot be distinguished from the $\Lambda$CDM model if dark energy is freezing, i.e., the corresponding equation of state tends to $-1$. For fast, recent transitions, the redshift at which the properties of dark energy have the most significant effect is $z=0.6\pm 0.2$. We also find that in the freezing regime, the $\sigma_8$ values can be lowered by about $8\%$, suggesting that those models could relieve the $\sigma_8$-tension. Additionally, freezing models generally predict faster late-time merging rates but a lower number of massive galaxies at $z=0$. Cosmic Probes of Fundamental Physics take two primary forms: Very high energy particles (cosmic rays, neutrinos, and gamma rays) and gravitational waves. In this study, we present the phase-space analysis of Quintessence models specified by the choice of two potentials, namely the Recliner potential and what we call the broken exponential-law potential, which is a new proposal. Using a dynamical system analysis we provide a systematic study of the cosmological evolution of the two models and their properties. We find new scaling solutions characterised by a constant ratio between the energy density of the scalar field and that of the matter component. These solutions are of high interest in light of the possibility to alleviate the coincidence problem. Additionally, the models also show attractor solutions. We finally construct concrete models built using a double potential according to which one potential realises the early-time scaling regime and the second one allows to exit this regime and to enter in the epoch of cosmic acceleration driven by a scalar-field dominated attractor point., Comment: 23 pages, 3 figures. 4 tables. In this paper we will list a few important goals that need to be addressed in the next decade, also taking into account the current discordances between the different cosmological probes, such as the disagreement in the value of the Hubble constant $H_0$, the $\sigma_8$--$S_8$ tension, and other less statistically significant anomalies. While these discordances can still be in part the result of systematic errors, their persistence after several years of accurate analysis strongly hints at cracks in the standard cosmological scenario and the necessity for new physics or generalisations beyond the standard model. In this paper, we focus on the $5.0\,\sigma$ tension between the {\it Planck} CMB estimate of the Hubble constant $H_0$ and the SH0ES collaboration measurements. After showing the $H_0$ evaluations made from different teams using different methods and geometric calibrations, we list a few interesting new physics models that could alleviate this tension and discuss how the next decade's experiments will be crucial. Moreover, we focus on the tension of the {\it Planck} CMB data with weak lensing measurements and redshift surveys, about the value of the matter energy density $\Omega_m$, and the amplitude or rate of the growth of structure ($\sigma_8,f\sigma_8$). We list a few interesting models proposed for alleviating this tension, and we discuss the importance of trying to fit a full array of data with a single model and not just one parameter at a time. Additionally, we present a wide range of other less discussed anomalies at a statistical significance level lower than the $H_0$--$S_8$ tensions which may also constitute hints towards new physics, and we discuss possible generic theoretical approaches that can collectively explain the non-standard nature of these signals.[Abridged], Comment: Contribution to Snowmass 2021. 224 pages, 27 figures. We extend the analysis of Pace et al., JCAP, 2019, 060, by considering the virialization process in the extended spherical collapse model for clustering dark-energy models, i.e., accounting for dark-energy fluctuations. Differently from the standard approach, here virialization is naturally achieved by properly modelling deviations from sphericity due to shear and rotation induced by tidal interactions. We investigate the time evolution of the virial overdensity $\Delta_\mathrm{vir}$ in seven clustering dynamical dark energy models and compare the results to the $\Lambda$CDM model and to the corresponding smooth dark-energy models. Taking into account all the appropriate corrections, we deduce the abundance of convergence peaks for Rubin Observatory-LSST and Euclid-like weak-lensing surveys, of Sunyaev-Zel'dovich peaks for a Simon Observatory-like CMB survey, and of X-ray peaks for an eROSITA-like survey. Despite the tiny differences in $\Delta_\mathrm{vir}$ between clustering and smooth dark-energy models, owing to the large volumes covered by these surveys, five out of seven clustering dark-energy models can be statistically distinguished from $\Lambda$CDM. The contribution of dark-energy fluctuation cannot be neglected, especially for the Chevallier-Polarski-Limber and Albrecht-Skordis models, provided the instrumental configurations provide high signal-to-noise ratio. We check the dynamical and observational features of four typologies of logotropic dark energy models, leading to a \emph{thermodynamic cosmic speed up} fueled by a single fluid that unifies dark energy and dark matter. We first present two principal Anton-Schmidt fluids where the Gr\"uneisen parameter $\gamma_{\rm G}$ is free to vary and then fixed to the special value $\gamma_{\rm G}=\tfrac{5}{6}$. We also investigate the pure logotropic model, corresponding to $\gamma_{\rm G}=-\frac{1}{6}$. Finally, we propose a new logotropic paradigm that works as a generalized logotropic fluid, in which we split the role of dark matter and baryons. We demonstrate that the logotropic paradigms may present drawbacks in perturbations, showing a negative adiabatic sound speed which make perturbations unstable. The Anton-Schmidt model with $\gamma_{\rm G}=\frac{5}{6}$ is ruled out while the generalized logotropic fluid seems to be the most suitable one, albeit weakly disfavored than the $\Lambda$CDM model. We combine low- and higher-redshift domains through experimental fits based on Monte Carlo Markov Chain procedures, taking into account supernovae Ia catalogue, Hubble measurements and $\sigma_8$ data points. We consider two model selection criteria to infer the statistical significance of the four models. We conclude there is statistical advantage to handle the Anton-Schmidt fluid with the Gr\"uneisen parameter free to vary and/or fixed to $\gamma_{\rm G}=-\frac{1}{6}$. The generalized logotropic fluid indicates suitable results, statistically favored than the other models, until the sound speed is positive, becoming unstable in perturbations elsewhere. We emphasize that the $\Lambda$CDM paradigm works statistically better than any kinds of logotropic and generalized logotropic models, while the Chevallier-Polarski-Linder parametrization is statistically comparable with logotropic scenarios., Comment: 15 pages, 3 tables, 4 figures. Model-independent constraints on modified gravity models hitherto exist mainly on linear scales. A recently developed formalism presented a consistent parameterisation that is valid on all scales. Using this approach, we perform model-independent modified gravity $N$-body simulations on all cosmological scales with a time-dependent $\mu$. We present convergence tests of our simulations, and we examine how well existing fitting functions reproduce the non-linear matter power spectrum of the simulations. We find that although there is a significant variation in the accuracy of all of the fitting functions over the parameter space of our simulations, the ReACT framework delivers the most consistent performance for the matter power spectrum. We comment on how this might be improved to the level required for future surveys such as Euclid and the Vera Rubin Telescope (LSST). We also show how to compute weak-lensing observables consistently from the simulated matter power spectra in our approach, and show that ReACT also performs best when fitting the weak-lensing observables. A quasi-static approximation (QSA) for modified gravity can be applied in a number of ways. We consider three different analytical formulations based on applying this approximation to: (1) the field equations; (2) the equations for the two metric potentials; (3) the use of the attractor solution derived within the Equation of State (EoS) approach. We assess the veracity of these implementations on the effective gravitational constant ($\mu$) and the slip parameter ($\eta$), within the framework of Horndeski models. In particular, for a set of models we compare cosmological observables, i.e., the matter power spectrum and the CMB temperature and lensing angular power spectra, computed using the QSA, with exact numerical solutions. To do that, we use a newly developed branch of the CLASS code: QSA_class. All three approaches agree exactly on very small scales. Typically, we find that, except for $f(R)$ models where all the three approaches lead to the same result, the quasi-static approximations differ from the numerical calculations on large scales ($k \lesssim 3 - 4 \times 10^{-3}\,h\,{\rm Mpc}^{-1}$). Cosmological observables are reproduced to within 1% up to scales ${\rm K} = k/H_0$ of the order of a few and $\ell>5$ for the approaches based on the field equations and on the EoS, and we also do not find any appreciable difference if we use the scale-dependent expressions for $\mu$ and $\eta$ with respect to the value on small scales, showing that the formalism and the conclusions are reliable and robust, fixing the range of applicability of the formalism. We discuss why the expressions derived from the equations for the potentials have limited applicability. A precise measurement of the curvature of the Universe is of primeval importance for cosmology since it could not only confirm the paradigm of primordial inflation but also help in discriminating between different early Universe scenarios. The recent observations, while broadly consistent with a spatially flat standard $\Lambda$ Cold Dark Matter ($\Lambda$CDM) model, are showing tensions that still allow (and, in some cases, even suggest) a few percent deviations from a flat universe. In particular, the Planck Cosmic Microwave Background power spectra, assuming the nominal likelihood, prefer a closed universe at more than 99\% confidence level. While new physics could be in action, this anomaly may be the result of an unresolved systematic error or just a statistical fluctuation. The standard $\Lambda$ Cold Dark Matter cosmological model provides an amazing description of a wide range of astrophysical and astronomical data. However, there are a few big open questions, that make the standard model look like a first-order approximation to a more realistic scenario that still needs to be fully understood. In this Letter of Interest we will list a few important goals that need to be addressed in the next decade, also taking into account the current discordances present between the different cosmological probes, as the Hubble constant $H_0$ value, the $\sigma_8 - S_8$ tension, and the anomalies present in the Planck results. We present a detailed study of the collapse of a spherical matter overdensity and the non-linear growth of large scale structures in the Galileon ghost condensate (GGC) model. This model is an extension of the cubic covariant Galileon (G3) which includes a field derivative of type $(\nabla_\mu\phi\nabla^\mu\phi)^2$ in the Lagrangian. We find that the cubic term activates the modifications in the main physical quantities whose time evolution is then strongly affected by the additional term. Indeed, the GGC model shows largely mitigated effects in the linearised critical density contrast, non-linear effective gravitational coupling and the virial overdensity with respect to G3 but still preserves peculiar features with respect to the standard $\Lambda$CDM cosmological model, e.g. both the linear critical density contrast and the virial overdensity are larger than those in $\Lambda$CDM. The results of the spherical collapse model are then used to predict the evolution of the halo mass function, non-linear matter and lensing power spectra. While at low masses the GGC model presents about 10% fewer objects with respect to $\Lambda$CDM, at higher masses for $z>0$ it predicts 10% ($z=0.5$)-20% ($z=1$) more objects per comoving volume. Using a phenomenological approach to include the screening effect in the matter power spectrum, we show that the difference induced by the modifications of gravity are strongly dependent on the screening scale and that differences can be up to 20% with respect to $\Lambda$CDM. These differences translate to the lensing power spectrum where qualitatively the largest differences with respect to the standard cosmological model are for $\ell<10^3$. Depending on the screening scale, they can be up to 25% on larger angular scales and then decrease for growing $\ell$. We discuss axion dark matter detection via two mechanisms: spontaneous decays and resonant conversion in neutron star magnetospheres. For decays, we show that the brightness temperature signal, rather than flux, is a less ambiguous measure for selecting candidate objects. This is owing principally to the finite beam width of telescopes which prevents one from being sensitive to the total flux from the object. With this in mind, we argue that the large surface-mass-density of the galactic centre or the Virgo cluster centre offers the best chance of improving current constraints on the axion-photon coupling via spontaneous decays. For the neutron star case, we first carry out a detailed study of mixing in magnetised plasmas. We derive transport equations for the axion-photon system via a controlled gradient expansion, allowing us to address inhomogeneous mass-shell constraints for arbitrary momenta. We then derive a non-perturbative Landau-Zener formula for the conversion probability valid across the range of relativistic and non-relativistic axions and show that the standard perturbative resonant conversion amplitude is a truncation of this result in the non-adiabatic limit. Our treatment reveals that that infalling dark matter axions typically convert non-adiabatically in magnetospheres. We describe the limitations of one-dimensional mixing equations and explain how three-dimensional effects activate new photon polarisations, including longitudinal modes and illustrate these arguments with numerical simulations in higher dimensions. We find that the bandwidth of the radio signal is dominated by Doppler broadening from the relative motion of the neutron star with respect to the observer. Therefore, we conclude that the radio signal from the resonant decay is weaker than previously thought, which means one relies on local density peaks to probe weaker axion-photon couplings., Comment: 31 pages, 14 figures and 2 tables. We derive the mass-temperature relation using an improved top-hat model and a continuous formation model which takes into account the effects of the ordered angular momentum acquired through tidal-torque interaction between clusters, random angular momentum, dynamical friction, and modifications of the virial theorem to include an external pressure term usually neglected. We show that the mass-temperature relation differs from the classical self-similar behavior, $M \propto T^{3/2}$, and shows a break at $3--4$ keV, and a steepening with a decreasing cluster temperature. We then compare our mass-temperature relation with those obtained in the literature with $N$-body simulations for $f(R)$ and symmetron models. We find that the mass-temperature relation is not a good probe to test gravity theories beyond Einstein's general relativity, because the mass-temperature relation of the $\Lambda$CDM model is similar to that of the modified gravity theories., Comment: 11 pages; 2 figures; matches the published Phys. We use the Equation of State (EoS) approach to study the evolution of the dark sector in Horndeski models, the most general scalar-tensor theories with second order equations of motion. By including the effects of the dark sector into our code EoS\_class, we demonstrate the numerical stability of the formalism and excellent agreement with results from other publicly available codes for a range of parameters describing the evolution of the function characterising the perturbations for Horndeski models, $\alpha_{\rm x}$, with ${\rm x}=\{{\rm K}, {\rm B}, {\rm M}, {\rm T}\}$. After demonstrating that on sub-horizon scales ($k\gtrsim 10^{-3}~{\rm Mpc}^{-1}$ at $z=0$) velocity perturbations in both the matter and the dark sector are typically subdominant with respect to density perturbations in the equation of state for perturbations, we find an attractor solution for the dark sector gauge-invariant density perturbation $\Delta_{\rm ds}$ by neglecting its time derivatives in the equation describing its time evolution, as commonly done in the well-known quasi-static approximation. Using this result, we provide simplified expressions for the equation-of-state functions: the dark sector entropy perturbations $w_{\rm ds}\Gamma_{\rm ds}$ and anisotropic stress $w_{\rm ds}\Pi_{\rm ds}$. From this we derive a growth factor-like equation for both matter and dark sector and are able to capture the relevant physics for several observables with great accuracy. We finally present new analytical expressions for the well-known modified gravity phenomenological functions $\mu$, $\eta$ and $\Sigma$ for a generic Horndeski model as functions of $\alpha_{\rm x}$. We show that on small scales they reproduce expressions presented in previous works, but on large scales, we find differences with respect to other works., Comment: 43 pages, 13 figures. The evolution of the virial overdensity $\Delta_{\rm vir}$ for $\Lambda$CDM and seven dynamical dark-energy models is investigated in the extended spherical collapse model (SCM). Here the virialization process is naturally achieved by introducing shear and rotation instead of using the virial theorem. We generalise two approaches proposed in the literature and show that, regardless of the dark-energy model, the new virialization term can be calibrated on the peculiar velocity of the shell as measured from Einstein-de Sitter simulations. The two virialization recipes qualitatively reproduce the features of the ordinary SCM, i.e., a constant $\Delta_{\rm vir}$ for the EdS model and time-variation for dark-energy models, but without any mass dependence. Depending on the actual description of virialization and on the dark-energy model, the value of $\Delta_{\rm vir}$ varies between 10 and 40 percent. We use the new recipes to predict the surface-mass-density profile of dark matter haloes and the number of convergence density peaks for LSST- and Euclid-like weak lensing surveys., Comment: 27 pages, 9 figures, 3 tables. We investigate generalized Einstein-Aether theories that are compatible with the Planck Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) temperature anisotropy, polarisation, and lensing data. For a given dark energy equation of state, $w_{\rm de}$, we formulate a designer approach and we investigate their impact on the CMB temperature anisotropy and matter power spectra. We use the Equation of State approach to parametrize the perturbations and find that this approach is particularly useful in identifying the most suitable and numerically efficient parameters to explore in a Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) analysis. We find the data constrains models with $w_{\rm de} = -1$ to be compatible with $\Lambda$CDM. For $w_{\rm de} \not= -1$ models, which avoid the gravitational waves constraint through the entropy perturbation, we constrain $w_{\rm de}$ to be $w_{\rm de } = -1.06^{+0.08}_{-0.03}$ (CMB) and $w_{\rm de } =-1.04^{+0.05}_{-0.02}$ (CMB+Lensing) at $68\%$C.L., and find that these models can be different from $\Lambda$CDM and still be compatible with the data. We also find that these models can ameliorate some anomalies in $\Lambda$CDM when confronted with data, such as the low-$\ell$ and high-$k$ power in the CMB temperature anisotropy and matter power spectra respectively, but not simultaneously. We also investigate the anomalous lensing amplitude, quantified by $A_{\rm lens}$, and find that that for $w_{\rm de} = -1$ models, $A_{\rm lens} = 1.15^{+0.07}_{-0.08}$ (CMB) and $A_{\rm lens} = 1.12\pm0.05$ (CMB+Lensing) at $68\%$C.L. $\sim$ 2$\sigma$ larger than expected, similar to previous analyses of $\Lambda$CDM., Comment: 20 pages, 9 figures, 4 tables. Using a semianalytic code, we show how baryon physics in a $\Lambda$CDM cosmology could solve the discrepancy between numerical predictions of dark matter haloes and observations, ranging from dwarf galaxies to clusters, without the need of nonstandard dark matter models as advocated, for example, by [Kaplinghat et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 116, 041302, (2016)]. Combining well established results, we show, for the first time, how accounting for baryon physics, in particular dynamical friction mechanisms, leads to flat galaxy-cluster profiles and correlations in several of their properties, solves the so-called `diversity problem' and reproduces very well the challenging, extremely low-rising rotation curve of IC2574. We therefore suggest treating baryonic physics properly before introducing new exotic features, albeit legitimate, in the standard cosmological model., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, matching the accepted version on Phys. Nowadays, data-centers are largely under-utilized because resource allocation is based on reservation mechanisms which ignore actual resource utilization. Indeed, it is common to reserve resources for peak demand, which may occur only for a small portion of the application life time. As a consequence, cluster resources often go under-utilized. In this work, we propose a mechanism that improves cluster utilization, thus decreasing the average turnaround time, while preventing application failures due to contention in accessing finite resources such as RAM. Our approach monitors resource utilization and employs a data-driven approach to resource demand forecasting, featuring quantification of uncertainty in the predictions. Using demand forecast and its confidence, our mechanism modulates cluster resources assigned to running applications, and reduces the turnaround time by more than one order of magnitude while keeping application failures under control. We explore the constraints on dark sector models imposed by the recent observation of coincident gravitational waves and gamma rays from a binary neutron star merger, GW170817. Rather than focusing on specific models as has been considered by other authors, we explore this in the context of the equation of state approach of which the specific models are special cases. After confirming the strong constraints found by others for Horndeski, Einstein-Aether and massive gravity models, we discuss how it is possible to construct models which might evade the constraints from GW170817 but still leading to cosmologically interesting modifications to gravity. Possible examples are ``miracle cancellations" such as in $f(R)$ models, nonlocal models and higher-order derivatives. The latter two rely on the dimensionless ratio of the wave number of the observed gravitational waves to the Hubble expansion rate being very large ($\sim10^{19}$) which is used to suppress modifications to the speed of gravitational waves., Comment: 10 pages

We review the Equation of State (EoS) approach to dark sector perturbations and apply it to $f(\mathcal{R})$ gravity models of dark energy. We show that the EoS approach is numerically stable and use it to set observational constraints on designer models. Within the EoS approach we build an analytical understanding of the dynamics of cosmological perturbations for the designer class of $f(\mathcal{R})$ gravity models, characterised by the parameter $B_0$ and the background equation of state of dark energy $w$. When we use the Planck Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) temperature anisotropy, polarisation and lensing data as well as the Baryonic Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) data from SDSS and WiggleZ, we find $B_0<0.006$ (95\%CL) for the designer models with $w=-1$. Furthermore, we find $B_0<0.0045$ and $|w+1|<0.002$ (95\%CL) for the designer models with $w\neq -1$. Previous analyses found similar results for designer and Hu-Sawicki $f(\mathcal{R})$ gravity models using the Effective Field Theory (EFT) approach (Raveri et al. 2014, Hu et al. 2016), therefore this hints for the fact that generic $f(\mathcal{R})$ models with $w\neq-1$ can be tightly constrained by current cosmological data, complementary to solar system tests (Brax et al. 2008, Faulkner et al. 2007). When compared to a $w$CDM fluid with the same sound speed, we find that the equation of state for $f(\mathcal{R})$ models is better constrained to be close to -1 by about an order of magnitude, due to the strong dependence of the perturbations on $w$., Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures, 4 tables

We present Stocator, a high performance object store connector for Apache Spark, that takes advantage of object store semantics. Previous connectors have assumed file system semantics, in particular, achieving fault tolerance and allowing speculative execution by creating temporary files to avoid interference between worker threads executing the same task and then renaming these files. Rename is not a native object store operation; not only is it not atomic, but it is implemented using a costly copy operation and a delete. Instead our connector leverages the inherent atomicity of object creation, and by avoiding the rename paradigm it greatly decreases the number of operations on the object store as well as enabling a much simpler approach to dealing with the eventually consistent semantics typical of object stores. We have implemented Stocator and shared it in open source. Performance testing shows that it is as much as 18 times faster for write intensive workloads and performs as much as 30 times fewer operations on the object store than the legacy Hadoop connectors, reducing costs both for the client and the object storage service provider.

In this work we review the theory of the spherical collapse model and critically analyse the aspects of the numerical implementation of its fundamental equations. By extending a recent work by Herrera et al. 2017, we show how different aspects, such as the initial integration time, the definition of constant infinity and the criterion for the extrapolation method (how close the inverse of the overdensity has to be to zero at the collapse time) can lead to an erroneous estimation (a few per mill error which translates to a few percent in the mass function) of the key quantity in the spherical collapse model: the linear critical overdensity $\delta_{\rm c}$, which plays a crucial role for the mass function of halos. We provide a better recipe to adopt in designing a code suitable to a generic smooth dark energy model and we compare our numerical results with analytic predictions for the EdS and the $\Lambda$CDM models. We further discuss the evolution of $\delta_{\rm c}$ for selected classes of dark energy models as a general test of the robustness of our implementation. We investigate the evolution of cosmological perturbations in models of dark energy described by a time-like unit normalized vector field specified by a general function $\mathcal{F}(\mathcal{K})$, so-called Generalized Einstein-Aether models. First we study the background dynamics of such models via a designer approach in an attempt to model this theory as dark energy. We find that only one specific form of this designer approach matches $\Lambda$CDM at background order and we also obtain a differential equation which $\mathcal{F}(\mathcal{K})$ must satisfy for general $w$CDM cosmologies. We also present the equations of state for perturbations in Generalized Einstein-Aether models, which completely parametrize these models at the level of linear perturbations. A generic feature of modified gravity models is that they introduce new degrees of freedom. By fully eliminating these we are able to express the gauge invariant entropy perturbation and the scalar, vector, and tensor anisotropic stresses in terms of the perturbed fluid variables and metric perturbations only. In this paper, extending past works of Del Popolo, we show how a high precision mass function (MF) can be obtained using the excursion set approach and an improved barrier taking implicitly into account a non-zero cosmological constant, the angular momentum acquired by tidal interaction of proto-structures and dynamical friction. In the case of the $\Lambda$CDM paradigm, we find that our MF is in agreement at the 3\% level to Klypin's Bolshoi simulation, in the mass range $M_{\rm vir} = 5 \times 10^9 h^{-1} M_{\odot} -- 5 \times 10^{14} h^{-1} M_{\odot}$ and redshift range $0 \lesssim z \lesssim 10$. For $z=0$ we also compared our MF to several fitting formulae, and found in particular agreement with Bhattacharya's within 3\% in the mass range $10^{12}-10^{16} h^{-1} M_{\odot}$. Traditionally the spherical collapse of objects is studied with respect to a uniform background density, yielding the critical over-density $\delta_\mathrm{c}$ as key ingredient to the mass function of virialized objects. Here we investigate the shear and rotation acting on a peak in a Gaussian random field. By assuming that collapsing objects mainly form at those peaks, we use this shear and rotation as external effects changing the dynamics of the spherical collapse, which is described by the Raychaudhuri equation. We extend a previous work by Reischke et al., 2016 by studying the effects of tidal shear on clustering dark energy models within the framework of the extended spherical collapse model and using the Zel'dovich approximation. As in previous works on clustering dark energy, we assumed a vanishing effective sound speed describing the perturbations in dark energy models. To be self-consistent, our treatment is valid only on linear scales since we do not intend to introduce any heuristic models. This approach makes the linear overdensity $\delta_{\rm c}$ mass dependent and similarly to the case of smooth dark energy, its effects are predominant at small masses and redshifts. Tidal shear has effects of the order of percent or less, regardless of the model and preserves a well known feature of clustering dark energy: When dark energy perturbations are included, the models resemble better the $\Lambda$CDM evolution of perturbations. We also showed that effects on the comoving number density of halos are small and qualitatively and quantitatively in agreement with what previously found for smooth dark energy models., Comment: 9 pages, 2 figures.
